2nd time in 2 months, ipad 4 lost sound and shuts down too, advice?

Last month had to back up and reset a 5 month old ipad. One month later same issues but on addition, it switches off automatically from time to time too. I am not near a computer to back up.

I wouldn't necessarily call this a defect. When you restored the first time, did you afterwards restore to your backup of the device, or did you install/sync everything brand new? I don't recommend going back to a previous backup if this happened in the past.
If it randomly shuts down, make sure you don't have too many programs running at the same time, they could use lots of system resources without your knowledge and could drain your battery quickly or cause the system to crash.  Close all down, aside from the one you are using, and see if that helps any with it randomly shutting off. This article shows you how, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5137.
The sound could be a hardware issue, could also be software, so I would possibly trying:1. toggling the volume up and down. If it says "headphones" make sure there isn't anything stuck in the headphone jack. If there is, then try plugging in and unplugging headphones multiple times. If that doesn't help, take it to apple, I wouldn't try monkeying around with it, because you could get the dirt/dust further lodged in. 2. Make sure bluetooth isn't turned on, it may be trying to send the audio to some bluetooth device like a radio or headset. 3. Reset all settings (make sure you are ready to do this, it won't delete your data/contacts, etc., but it will set all apps back to their default settings, and wifi passwords will be deleted): go to settings>general>reset>reset all settings, then confirm you really want to reset them. Your ipad will reset and restart. 4. If those steps didn't help: restore the device to factory settings through itunes on your computer, then either re-download all data you want on there, or sync it from your computer (just make sure NOT to restore from a backup) 5. if right after restoring it to factory settings you still are not getting any sound, well, you're S.O.L. - kidding. You probably do have a hardware problem at this point, but apple can repair that.
this should help if don't remember the Restore steps

let us know if any of those steps helped!

  • My iPad keeps freezing and shutting down just after I purchased an itunes movie.

    -iPad Mini
    -64GB
    -w/o Retina display
-Updated to the latest iOS 7
-Using "Videos" app to watch and used "iTunes Store" to download movie
I literally just downloaded this movie, called "Sucker Punch", I wanted to watch it while it downloaded and it was doing fine for the first maybe 2 minutes if that and then I would pause it when it started skipping thinking I was letting it buffer, but then when i tried to resume by using my clicker on my headphones nothing would happen. I proceeded to tap the screen thinking something was up with my headphones and nothing happened. I held the home and lock button to boot and then it came back on eventually but did the same exact thing but this time it just crashed completely and restated itself. My WiFi single is strong and everything else using the WiFi is working perfectly. This is very aggravating . Any clue or help?

    Hello, BRIABUNNI.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are a couple resources that have some helpful troubleshooting steps for this issue.  These are labeled for the iPhone, but the steps will also apply for the iPad.
    Resolution
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

If you aren't using it in a sauna then take it to an Apple store for evaluation or contact Apple Support.

  • Ipad mini keeps unexpectedly shutting down

New (two months) ipad mini is constantly shutting down and reverting to black screen while in use; is also frequently dropping wi-fi connection.  The problem doesn't seem connected to a specific app or function, and other ipads in the house don't have the same shut down/wi-fi connection problem.  Any tips?

Then there is a bigger glitch. Your only other option seems to be restoring your iPad.

  • 2nd time in a month, my MBP has crashed

Over Thanksgiving my then 3 month old 15' MBP was faced with a blue screen soon after installing Leopard. I took it to an Apple Store the next week and after 6 hours in the store, they fixed it. They had never seen the problem before and actually found a coding error from the factory that was hidden while running Tiger but that made itself present when I ran Leopard, they rewrote code and fixed it. Some data was lost, but nothing crucial.
Tonight (12/28), I was watching a movie in Front Row (my computer constantly freezes in Front Row) and I paused it to get a drink. I came back, tried to unpause it and it froze. I shut my computer off and rebooted, and this same blue screen has returned and I am not able to get to the login screen, in regular nor safe mode. This will be the 2nd time in a month this has happened. I'm taking it to the Apple Store tomorrow but am not looking forward to possibly spending another 6 hours in the store. At what point will Apple simply replace such a new, and seemingly defective computer.

Who knows what other junk is left over from your Tiger installation?
I think you'll have to prove a hardware issue before counting on Apple to replace your Mac, and even then, they will just repair the defects with new parts.
You could probably save yourself a few hours if you can reinstall your OS from Time Machine. If Front Row continues to crash you have some other software issues to check. That's where I'd point the Apple Store.

    Hello PearldiamondMD,
I was thinking of a few recommendations for you. I recommend our iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant found here http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1. Start at section 1, if that doesnt fix it, then section 3, and if all else does not work, section 5. At section 3 I recommend closing ALL the apps.
Here is section 1 to get you started.
    Restart iPhone
To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Is iPhone not responding? To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If your device does not turn on or displays a red battery icon, try recharging next.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

All I can do is look at the folders and files and see nothing that tells me how to start the installation. Clicking "open with Auto play" gives me irrelevant options, view photos, share, etc. I'm running Windows 8. This program has worked, although buggy, for the past year.

  • Hello. I have a problem. I cannot delete any apps from my ipad. It won't even wiggle when i tap and hold on the icon. There's also no restrictions and passcodes in my settings. My photos on camera roll even get lost once i shut down my ipad. Please help.

Hello. I have a problem. I cannot delete any apps from my ipad. It won't even wiggle when i tap and hold on the icon. There's also no restrictions and passcodes in my settings. My photos on camera roll even get lost once i shut down my ipad. Please help.

The preinstalled apps, those that came as part of the iOS, cannot be deleted and will not shake or provide the black circle-X for deletion.
Others should do that if you touch and hold for a few seconds.
If they are not, do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if that appears.

  • In my shuffle 4g the songs not playing properly most of the times it gives some kind of sound and stop playing songs.

in my shuffle 4g the songs not playing properly most of the times it gives some kind of sound and stop playing songs.

First, make sure the headphones plug is completely pushed into the headphones jack.  Because the jack serves multiple functions, the fit may be tighter than expected (especially if you have the Apple EarPods).
Also, try using the headphones with another device, to rule out bad headphones.  Or try another set of (known working) headphones with the shuffle.
Are you using older headphones that have remote control buttons?  Not the latest EarPods and not the immediately previous version of white Apple earbuds.  Or non-Apple headphones with remote control buttons.  It's possible they are not compatible and interfering with the shuffle's operation.  Any standard headphones (with no buttons) should work.
If that does not help, you can try doing a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the shuffle, reinstall its software, and set it to defaut settings.  If a software (or settings) problem on the shuffle is the cause, the Restore should fix it.
Otherwise, if the Restore does not help, it may be a hardware problem.  If it has been less than one year since purchase, it is under warranty.

  • Why is my 2010 macbook pro freezing and shutting down every time I start it?

Today, after using my macbook pro to upload pictures from my iphone, my computer started having problems and shutting down. The screen goes gray and a box pops up saying that a problem exists and that I need to restart my computer. I've only had the macbook since last November, so I don't understand why I've been having so many problems with it. This happened a few times to a lesser extent in Senegal when I was there for 5 months. I used a mac power adapter so I don't think it could be an over-charge problem.
    Please help!

Sounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
    Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit.

My ipad showed a blue screen and shut down.  I cannot restart it.  A soft restart did not work.  I tried connecting to iTunes on the PC but it did not detect the device

Did you try resetting the iPad?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears- let go of the buttons.
If that doesn't do anything, try this for the issue with iTunes not seeing the iPad.

  • Why does my iPad email app keep shutting down?

I just purchased my iPad 2 3G last week, so I am a new iPad/Apple user.  I really like the product and now wonder why I have stayed loyal to the Windows PC for so long.  I'm still looking for some of those useful PC keys and keystroke shortcuts that I am so accustomed to, but I am adapting.
My iPad mail app keeps shutting down on me, whether I am typing a message or just reviewing/managing my mail.  I use a bluetooth keyboard, so it is not a matter of me bumping the touch screen that is causing the app to close.
I have lost a lot of important business emails while composing them and eventually stopped using my iPad to compose email.
Is there a setting controlling this or is it a program glitch?
    Thanks.

    Pam-
It could be that the battery charge indicator is showing 100 percent when you actually have almost no charge left.  In case that is the problem, leave your iPad connected to its wall charger overnight, and see if that helps.
One other thing to try, is to reset (reboot) your iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes solves mysterious problems.

Safari crashes and shuts down every time I visit Grays Online. Site usually flicks off in under a minute. Anyone else with this problem?

The website may need more memory than you have available if you are running iOS 5.1.1 on the original iPad. Try some basic troubleshooting steps. Maybe quitting all apps might be the best thing to try.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit ALL apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
