2TB Airport Time Capsule Connectivity and Range Issues

Got the brand new Airport + Time Capsule (2TB) to replace a weak (ane expensive) Linksys EA6500 AC router which had a hard time staying connected.
Originally replaced the Linksys with an old Belkin unit and everything worked fine.  Then I bought the new Airport + Time Capsule.  Since using my Airport, the connectivity & range are really unreliable.  Either the signal disappears or router cannot even be found.  Streaming is constantly interrupted regardless of device (AppleTV, iPhone, etc...).  Because the Airport is my backup, I don't want to disconnect so I have resorted to plugging an older Linksys into one of the ethernet ports on the Airport.  That network works just fine.
The latest firmware is installed... I am stumped.  Big Apple supporter but this disappoints that I have any issues - especially with a new item of this price range.
In fact, as I am typing this, I opened the Airport Utility - which showed it working just fine 10 min ago - and got the following...
Suggestions are welcome... Bring it back?  Change setting?  Help !!
Thank you.

Poor wireless reliablity is being reported both here and in the airport section for the new extreme.
Just take a quick gander.. even the first page of threads here will have a few about the issue. So be warm and comforted.. you are merely a beta tester.. along with all the rest. eg

I would do the normal stuff to help wireless act in a stable manner.
1. Reset to factory.
2. Set all names to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Give a different name to 5ghz so you can choose it.
3. Set fixed wireless channels and test in order for 2.4ghz, 11, 6, 1
And use 40 and 150 for 5ghz.. (a few channels either side is fine.. )
4. Clear out all the old wireless names on the devices.. and setup just the new TC.
No luck then return the TC and either get refund.. or take another.. but until Apple fixes the firmware it is not likely to be fixed.
I would buy the Asus RT-N66U or AC66U.. for a more mature product.. and us external drive for TM.

Every time I try to connect to my 2TB Airport Time Capsule I get the following message "The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."  However, if I unplug it and then plug it in again, I can connect to it.  How can this be corrected without having to unplug it all the time?

  • Have the following iMac at home and am contemplating adding a MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule for backup/storage and increased WiFi speeds.  My question is this (1) a compatible setup, and (2) will my older iMac slow down the WiFi speeds?   Man

Have an older iMac and am contemplating adding a new MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule to increase WiFi speeds. My question is (a) is this a compatable setup and (b) will the older iMac slow the WiFi speeds?

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • 2Tb airport time capsule

Recieved 2Tb airport time capsule as a gift.  Have tried to join it to an existing wireless network not successful.  When I choose join existing network it goes straight to create new network. What am I doing wrong?

The icon will only show up once you complete the setup.. setup any old way and when it completes make sure you update the TC.. close the airport utility.. wait a minute or two then reopen it.. if the TC icon is not there then the values have not been saved.
Go to the full manual setup.
Plug the TC LAN port, into the computer by ethernet.
No other connection to the TC..
Factory reset the TC.. and this time use manual method..
    1. Ensure that your ethernet is correct.. your computer must be 10.0.1.2 and the TC is 10.0.1.1
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local. This is from network preference in your computer.
    2. In airport utility go to file / Configure Other.
    3. Type in the IP address.. No password is needed.
    4. Click OK and you will get this screen..
Apple made v6 utility fully dependent on wireless. The v5 utility would work by either ethernet or wireless.. I only recently figured out how to force the v6 to actually use ethernet.
Set the network to bridge.. set the internet to dhcp.. set the wireless to create a wireless network.
Fix up the names to all short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. then update the TC. Plug it back WAN port to the modem LAN port. and it should work.

  • Airport time capsule connection to disk fails, requires reboot

I have a 3TB airport time capsule. It has been upgraded to 7.7.3. The AirPort side works great with all the apple and win devices in our home network. The problem is between my MacBook Pro and the time capsule side. It seems like every few days I lose the ability to either perform a Time Capsule back up or even connect to the disk (which we use for storing files). The only way I can get the connection back is by reloading the Airport unit.
Any suggestions / ideas would be appreciated as this is become a pain.

It does sound a better option to use Time Capsule as the main network device and then extend it with Airport Express. The time capsule is way more powerful than the Airport Express. Also if your Airport Express wasn't brought recently it's probably Wireless G. So if you extend a Wireless G network you only get G and not N. Best advise I can give put your TC in place first and worry about AE later.

  • Airport Time Capsule/Air Express Networking Issue

All of a sudden none of my wireless devices will connect to my network (2 iPhone 5's, 1 iPhone4S and an iPad2). I have a Motorola Surfboard cable modem  attached to a Linksys router. Hardwired to the Linksys router is an Apple Airport Time Capsule in bridge mode centrally located in the home to create a wireless network and a Mac mini in the kitchen. Hardwired to the Airport Time Capsule is another Mac mini in the family room and a Windows PC in the walkout. To extend the wireless network I have two Airport Express units at opposite ends of the home. When I use the Airport Utility both of the express units and the Airport Time Capsule will report which wireless clients are currently attached to them, and the clients show wifi as being available with full bars. However, when I try to use any app requiring network all we get is the spinning wheel. If I turn off wifi on the clients LTE & 3G works fine. I have shut down and sequentially started the network up beginning with the modem several times, leaving the system off for longer intervals each time. The DNS servers and domain name are correct and I have even initiated a DHCP lease renewal and restarted the clients with no help. I am guessing my Airport Time Capsule has failed but in no way that is obvious to me. Has anyone had a wireless failure like this? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is a follow up from my own post. I factory reset the Airport Time Capsule and the two Airport Express units and re-setup the wireless network leaving the Airport Time Capsule set to 802.11 N (802.11 b/g compatible) and the two Airport Express units extending the first; the network acted the same. I then changed the Airport Time Capsule to 802.11 N (only 5 GHz) and everything works as it used to. I can change it back to "b/g compatible" and it fails, and back to "only 5 GHz" and it works. It would seem the 2.4 GHz radio has failed in a rather odd way. The good thing is my wireless network is working without me having to layout some cash for new hardware. We will see how long the 5 GHz radio lasts, it is a gen 1 Time Capsule. For now all is well.

  • How do I delete files when message is hard drive is full.  I have a airport  time capsule connected to my mac air

How do I delete files to free up space from my hard drive?
My Apple Airport Time Capsule is connected to my 11" Mac Air .  I was under the impression that connecting the time capsule would free up my hard drive to provide infinite space to the internet.

If you'd like to keep copies of them, put them onto an external drive and back it up as well; if you're using Time Machine, remove that drive from the list of items set to be excluded from the backup. If the drive's not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu and use the Disk Utility to erase it.
If you've done that or don't want to keep them, throw them away and empty the Trash.
The Time Capsule doesn't back up to the iCloud.

  • How can I put my itunes library on my Airport Time Capsule 3TB and still play thru Apple TV?

I am trying to free up space on my 1TB iMac and would like to put iTunes/burned movies/music to Airport Time Capsule 3tb. At the same time I would like tobe able to play said media through my Apple TV.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • How to connect to ethernet and wireless on AirPort Time Capsule?

New 2TB AirPort Time Capsule.  I have a Motorola SurfBoard modem (modem only).  The AirPort is replacing a Wireless N router.  The wireless setup was a breeze, but ethernet ports do not work when AirPort is configured for DHCP (or DHCP and NAT).  If I change it to Bridge all of my eNet devices work perfectly, but then I don't have wireless.  I could not find any documentation on how to configure this correctly.  I called Apple Care, but they were unable to help at all.  Apple Care told me to bring the AirPort back to the Apple store to test it.  Has anyone successfully setup the new AirPort Time Capsule to replace a wireless router?

    Hi,
So about 24 hours after getting mine to work it suddenly stopped.
None of the above resetting procedures worked.
Then a really goofy thing happened. I was in AirPort Utility and I had just received the error message that the set up did not work as I was trying to hard reset everything and start over for the 3rd or 4th time.
Just then my Wi-Fi only iPad chimed with an incoming text message. The time capsule was flashing amber which would indicate that it had not set up a network. AirPort Utility was showing that an unknown error had occurred and that I should try again. Despite this my iPad 2 was showing a good connection to the wireless network that I had tried to create in AirPort Utility but which it told me me had failed.
I then clicked the wifi thing on the tool bar, it connected to my network and all was good.
My 2 cents? This should still be in beta as Airport Utility and the new TC are not working as they should. I'm in 10.7.5 and 6.1.4 and the latest AU.

  • Using Airport Time Capsule with an external usb hard drive - how to connect

I have 2TB Airport Time capsule which is connected to my iMac by an ethernet cable and which I use for T.Machine backups - No problems here.
I have an old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8  and which is also connected to my T/C via wi-fi - again no problems.
But I understand I can use an external hard drive via usb cable connected via a powered hub, to the T/Capsule and which I wish to do certain backups from my MBP (I have no wish to update the MBP as it runs certain apps no longer available on the iMac (10.9.2)
Now the problem I have is trying to set it up,  the MBP has Airport Utility 5.6.1 and I can’t continue as it says I need a newer version. As I see it,  the newer version doesn’t work on the MBP only  the iMac.
A catch 22 situation. If I continue and and go to “manual setup” then try  update, all I get is “correct the problem before updating”  (Allow setup over the internet using Bonjour).
Anyone have any ideas or images that I can view to try and get things going?
I should add that I wish to use my external hard drive not as a time machine backup but only for certain items using say, Super Duper, but am unable to get the disk to mount on the MBP
    Alan

I still can't use it the way I was hoping because it then becomes a T/M back-up disk and not a normal usb/firewire disc.
You are first mounting the drive on the desktop, correct?
Not sure what you mean here.
You can drag/drop files normally or copy/paste files to the drive icon on the desktop, just as you would a normal drive that is displayed on the desktop.
Or, double click the drive icon on the desktop and drag/drop files into the open window there.
Tell us the steps that you are using to mount the drive on the desktop. What happens after each step?

  • There was a problem connecting to the server "AirPort Time Capsule".

I bought a new Macbook air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule. I currently use the ATC for time machine, and external storage of Itunes & Iphoto libraries.
Everything was beautiful until the other day when I got the following :
There was a problem connecting to the server "Airport Time Capsule".
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
I still have internet connection, and have tried other suggestions across internet but really the only fix has been to power cycle the ATC. This unfortunately is only a temporary remedy for a day or so until it returns.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

How long did it take from when you set it  up till it went bad??

  • Does an Airport Express require a wired connection to boost a Wi-Fi signal if I already have a wired Airport Time Capsule on the Network?

I want to boost the Wi-Fi signal around my house. I have a 3TB Airport Time Capsule connected to my Virgin Media modem via a WLAN connection but wonder if an Airport Express device can be used at a remote location purely wirelessly - apart from a power connection obviously?

Does AirPort Express require a wired connection.......if I already have a wired AirPort Time Capsule on the Network?
No, but you will have much better network performance if you do wire the AirPort Express.
The reason for this is that when you try to extend a network using wireless, you will typically lose about a half of the potential speed capability on the network.
There is no network speed loss when you wire the Express.
Here is what Apple's support document says about this:
In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device. The general rule is to keep the Wi-Fi network as simple as possible. You can accomplish this by using the minimum number of Wi-Fi base stations required to service the physical network area and by using Ethernet wherever possible.
Extending the range of your Wi-Fi network by connecting Wi-Fi base stations together using Ethernet is always the best option, and will provide the best throughput

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

  • How to add Airport Time Capsule to an existing AT&T U-Verse Network?

Hello, and please bear with me as I am not very tech savvy I just purchased a 2TB Airport Time Capsule (5th Gen) because I'd like to backup my Macbook Pro wirelessly. I've tried customer service with my ISP without luck, AT&T U-Verse. I currently connect through a 3801HGV 2wire dsl modem/router and think I'm stuck using it since numerous other devices are hooked up through it and I'd rather not re-setup them up.
I'm having issues connecting the TC to my existing network. When I use the Airport Utility (tried both while TC is hardwired to my computer, and to the router/modem) it doesn't detect my 2wire network, another network I assume is my neighbor's.
From reading through other posts with similar issues it sounds like I can't use the Airport TC to extend my existing network, say if the U-Verse router was upstairs, Airport TC was downstairs is that correct? Do I have to hardwire the TC to the router/modem?  I've found some screen captures of the Airport Utility but I cannot find them. I noticed that they were pre-Maverick screenshots so perhaps the menus have changed?

Do I have to hardwire the TC to the router/modem?
    Yes.
Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Uverse gateway to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Power up the TIme Capsule (TC) and let it run few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the back of the device for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the TC to restart, at which time it will be slowly blinking amber.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Other Wi-Fi Devices tab at the upper left corner of the screen
Click on the Time Capsule now and AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analze the network.
Click on Other Options at the lower left of the window
Click the button next to Create a new network
Enter a name for the network and a name for the TC and a password and click Next
Skip the step about cycling power on the modem
Wait while AirPort Setup sets up the TC, then click Done
Now click on the TC icon in AirPort Utility
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Change the setting for Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the screen, then click Continue and wait for the TC to restart again
You should now have a green light on the TC
You can use either the Uverse wireless network or the TC wireless.  If you want the best wireless performance, use the TC network.

  • How can I access my Airport Time Capsule from a remote location?

I have my 2 TB Airport Time Capsule connected to my home wireless network and I have heard it is possible to access my information stored on it from anywhere, but I have no clue how to do this.

Frankly, this is not easy, and not for the faint of heart.  Having someone to help who has done this will save you a ton of time and headaches.
Set up and use Back to My Mac - Apple Support
Before you do anything though, Back to My Mac assumes that you have a simple modem......not a modem/router that is often provided by Internet Service Providers to their customers.  A modem/router.....also called a gateway.....will not allow Back to My Mac to work correctly, so if you do have a modem/router or gateway device, you will need to speak to your service provider to find out if they can provide you with a simple modem.
A simple modem will look something like this:
A modem/router or gateway will look something like this:
Having said this, personally I use another method called Port Mapping to allow my Mac...or an iPhone or iPad connect back to the Time Capsule at home when I am traveling.  But, this is even more complicated than Back to My Mac, so BTMM would be the place to start for most users.
If things look intimidating on first pass and you can locate a good tech to set things up for you, that would be money well spent.
