2TB Western Digital Drive won't mount in my Mac Pro. Please Help

Hello, everyone. I have a Mac Pro (MacPro1,1) with an internal drive that won't mount. I bought it used last year with 12GB RAM and 1TB hard drive and SuperDrive. I have since upgraded storage with an internal 2TB drive from Seagate (no problem), and a 500GB drive (no problem) from Western Digital, and installed a second optical drive from an old Power Mac G5. I had an additional newer 2TB drive from WD that I bought as an external. I took it out of its case and put it in a carrier and then in Bay 4 of my Mac Pro. It's the only drive I've had problems with, and I don't know why. The drive is immediately rejected by OS X upon startup. The options include "Eject" and "Initialize..." but I've clicked initialize every time. Disk Utility opens and I can see the drive but for whatever reason, it will not mount. There is one partition on it, and I think when I bought it, I formatted it with GUID and Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I haven't used it as a Time Machine drive, but I've backed up some files on it. I've restarted several times, and I'm not sure if I can hear it spinning inside my computer.
Should I pull it out and see if the partition is still on the disk? Wha

When DU launches or launch it yourself, that is the most useless "eject, ignore" and there is no real initialize command anyway anymore.... Click on raw drive WDxxxx and goto Partition tab, change the number of partitions to anything (another silly item) so you can go to the Advanced Options finally
WD MyBook drives are often not standard SATA drives with power and data connectors.
Does it look like one?
It should be GUID but make sure, you can also tell from the status below.
Might even change it to something else, erase, then set it back to GUID.
Apply.  And only then does it matter what user partitions you create.
Jump through hoops for no reason.
If you have Windows or a PC, use WD Lifebuard. Great at testing any SATA drive.
Quick format with zeroes. Then Extended Test. Maybe even Full Format with zeroes to insure no bad sectors.
When and where, at what point in time, did you use it and write files to it?
By "carrier" I assume you mean the drive sled to go inside the Mac Pro.
Did you ever use it in an SATA external other than WD? some of their MyBooks are moled into and drive and case cannot be used separated.

  • External drives won't mount. not even virtual! PLEASE HELP!

I'm fairly tech savvy but I'm completely lost on this one.
I have a G4 867 running OS 10.4.8 Sometime after updating and running smoothly for sometime my computer stopped recognizing external hard drives.
I have two different firewire drives and a USB jump drive and an iPod and none of them are recognized anymore. They do not mount and do not show up in disk utility. However one of my firewire drives is an older system drive and if I have it on before start up I can boot off of it and it works fine. I'm not sure but because of this it really seems like a software issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I really want to update my iPod (it will charge but not mount) as well as use my other drives. As far as I can tell it is not directly related to 10.4.8 because it worked fine in 10.4.8 for weeks and there is nothing else I can think of that I added to the system that might affect it. Please help me..
    Thanks,
    Dustin

It might have something to do with your kextcache. Try moving the following three items to your desktop and perform a shutdown (not a restart)..
    /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
    /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
Be careful when wandering into the System folder and folders therein.

the only thing that was a little different is that it wants to only copy those files to the desktop so I had to delete the originals, but it works 100% now.

  • WD My Passport for Mac won't mount on my Mac Pro

My 1TB external hard drive is less than six months old and was working fine; now won't mount on my Mac. I don't remember disconnecting it without ejecting it but I do think I got a message about needing to eject before disconnecting. I checked in the forum for a possible solution and tried connecting it to a PC laptop; I could see it to eject it but it didn't show up anywhere else. I am not a computer expert! How can I access my files? I have a Mac Pro, Mac OS X ver. 10.6.8.

Historically, the problem has been that many USB-powered drives can't get enough power from a USB port after they begin to age. The Passport is bus-powered, getting all its power from a USB port. Not the best solution for a desktop computer.
To get such a drive going again, you need one of two workabouts:
    1) a powered USB hub (has its own power supply to make up the shortfall) that goes between the external drive and the computer.
    2) use a "Y" USB cable to get power from two USB ports simultaneously (such as http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/)
Also, WD uses an odd proprietary formatting scheme that is of itself a problem area. WD makes very good bare drives but the enclosures into which they put them to make an external drive are not very good and not particually Mac-Friendly. The formatting makes them harder to use.
Once you get  the files you need off the external,  consider erasing and reformating it to Mac Extended Journaled using Disk Utility. That often makes the drive more reliable without having to revert to USB hubs or special cables. It gets rid of the proprietary formatting that seem to contribute to the problems.
I have three external drives. All have WD bare drives inside but none are in WD encosures. By far the best enclosures for Mac external drives are those from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
I have two of the desktop model shown and one of its portable version for my MacBook Pro. All three have given me superb service and zero problems.

  • 4 TB Hitachi drives won't fit in 2008 Mac Pro

I just purchased 2x 4 TB Hitachi drives for my 2008 (3,1) Mac Pro. When I went to install them, they would not fit. I mounted the drives to the sleds, and tried to slide them in. They would only go about 95% of the way, and I could see that the SATA connectors weren't linking up. I pushed fairly hard and couldn't get them to budge.
I turned on the computer to see if they were mounting, and they didn't.
On OWC they say the drives are compatible. Any ideas?

Desktop Hard Drive screws are an SAE (American) #6 size, 32 threads/inch. If you had a die to clean up the threads afterwards, you could file them shorter.
There is also a common electrician's wire stripper/crimper tool that has dies in the handle for those and a few other common screws used in American Elecrtrical work. You can screw a screw into that die, and squeeze the handles to lop off the end, then back it out to clean up the threads. I was surprised to find one in a drawer, and it has been very handy. Looks like this:

CD, DVD, and notebook Drives use a metric 3mm screw, 0.5mm/thread

  • Format External Western Digital Drive to be used with only Mac

I recently ordered Western Digital My Passport Essential. I will get it by tomorrow evening.
It comes pre-formatted using NTFS file-type.
I need to format it, to be used with My MacBook Pro running Lion, and old White MacBook running Snow Leopard. One more thing, I will be using with OS X only. I don't have Windows/Linux system at my place, and I don't have any intention to be using with Windows/Linux in future.
Should I format it using HFS+ or HFS+ Journaled or something else? Why?

    Like Niel said...
but also you might want to partition it rather than just erase the visible partition, i think some of these disks come with annoying hidden partitions and crappy backup software.
If you want to make sure you get the whole drive to yourself, instead of using the erase tab in Disk Utiliity, go to the partition tab, then select 1 partition (or which ever you want from the drop down.) and configure as you see fit. this will make sure that no hidden partitions remain.
You might also want to select GPT as the partition map incase you ever decide to use it to boot OS X from.

  • Lacie Big5 won't mount on new Mac Pro

    Hi!
I recieved my Mac Pro the other day and also a new Lacie 10TB Big5 Thunderbolt2.
Today my plan was to start everything up and make a level 10 raid on the Lacie disc.
I turned everything on and the Lacie disc don't show up!
Tried to restart and reconnect everything but no luck.
Meanwhile I installed the Lacie raid software and after about 20 minutes the disc popped up all of a sudden. Great!
I opened the raid software and the disc unmounted and mounted itself a couple of times and then just dissapeared not to be seen again.
I restarted everything again a couple of times but the disc won't show up. I tried the disc utility to check if it was connected to the system but nothing there.
I tried connecting my rugged 160GB via a FW800-Thunderbolt adapter and that worked just fine.
Any suggestions on what might be wrong here???
Funny thing is that I opted for a Pegasus since my experience with Lacie has not been great through the years but the seller talked me into getting the Lacie, saying that their discs has improved in stability recent years.... Not convinced after this to say the least.... Why Oh why didn't I trust my instinct?!

    Hi,
It's not mounting because you need to install the Lacie Raid Management software. Once this is installed it will show up. See link.......

  • IPod won't mount on new Mac Pro

I just got a new Mac Pro that came with Snow Leopard. After getting everything setup I plugged in my iPod shuffle and it won't mount when plugged into either of the 2 front USB ports or any of the 3 back USB ports. When I plug it into the USB port on the keyboard it mounts and I can sync it through iTunes. When plugged into the front two ports the green charging light comes on, but it doesn't mount. The back 3 ports just cause the iPod to blink the green charging light quickly, it isn't a solid green.
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem or the Mac Pro. The iPod was working perfectly with my G5 running Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    david.

I just don't get computers sometimes (even after being a software developer for over 25 years).
I had restarted the computer multiple times while installing other software but the iPod would not mount.
I took your suggestion to try another USB device and the only other device I had was a Canon scanner. I installed the drivers which required another restart. And the scanner worked and now the iPod works on all of the USB ports. It is mounted in iTunes and I can sync it on any port.
I checked the console logs files and didn't find anything unusual before it didn't work and nothing different now that the iPod mounts.
    David.

Verify after format that it cant be written to.
If not return and get a Toshiba or Hitachi HD.  Recommend avoiding WD drives.

  • Western Digital drive won't format to correct capacity

I am using a G4 tower as a vehicle to duplicate one laptop drive to another via the means of two connectors which allow me to attach them to the IDE chains. (This is much faster than using an external dump drive as an intermediary because I only have to copy once.)
    drives...
    * normal G4 3.5" boot drive (OSX 10.4.11, master on primary chain)
    * 80gb "old" laptop drive (OSX 10.5.5, attached as slave on secondary chain)
    * WD Scorpio 250gb EIDE (blank, master on secondary chain)
The problem: The Scorpio only lists as 128gb, no matter what I do or how I partition it. If I format the Scorpio on PC to FAT32 and bring it to the Mac, it properly mounts and displays as 250gb, but if I erase it, it goes back to 128gb.
    What's going on?

Depending on the Power Mac G4 model, drives larger than 128GB may not be supported due to limitations of the (then available) IDE interface. You can look at the profiles on everymac.com for your specific model
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/index-powermac-g4.html
(click on +Standard Hard Drive+ on the a model's profile page to get additional info about this limitation of the older models)
If you format it using another machine with newer IDE interface hardware, it will format to full capacity. It may even show the higher capacity on the Power Mac. However, the old IDE interface still has the same upper size limitation for reading and writing data, so long-term use will likely lead to data corruption.
Luckily, Power Macs have PCI slots, so you can buy a newer IDE interface card and it will then be able to format and use bigger drives to full capacity. For example

  • Used Western Digital 500 GB Harddrive mounted on another MAC

It worked fine and mounted right away. I copied the files I wanted and then ejected.
The problem is that I can't get it to remount back to my computer. I've connected it to the same Firewire port, nothing.
    I tried logging on, nothing.
    I tried restarting, nothing.
Are there any other things I could try, short of Disk Utility/reformating the drive?

If you have not already, you should try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, resetting SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
which is basically disconnecting the iMac from power (and all cables), and then reconnecting it, following a precise procedure. That may reset your hardware.
FireWire ports are known to go out. It should be plug and play with the iMac turned ON and running, but something like a short in the cable or connection can make the port go bad. I use a FireWire hub for anything I connect and disconnect often, and leave cables connected (while the Mac is turned on) in the direct FireWire ports.
If your iMac model as two ports, you should check the other one. If the drive is FireWire 400 and the other port is 800, you can use a cable like this
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
    or an adapter

  • Iomega USB Hard Drive won't appear on my desktop. Please help

Hi, I purchased an Iomega desktop hardrive about 3 months ago and all has been working well.
I had no problems working it with my MacBook Pro and backed up all my files easily. I now need to get some files from my Iomega hard drive, but now when I switch it on nothing appears on the desktop.
I have restarted my Mac and the hard drive several times and still nothing. I even tried using the USB cable that came with my printer in case the cable was faulty, but still nothing.
I have not used the Iomega hard drive for over a month, so am not sure if this may have something to do with it?
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance

OK… does the drive appear in Disk Utility else System Profiler? Also, if you are using bus power to run the drive try plugging it into AC. Another possilbility is to place a powered USB hub inbetween the drive and yur MBP as sometime this helps.

    Hello maccynicwhoalwayshasmacs,
