2Wire and the Latest Airport Extreme Cards

After searching the MacBook and Airport forums, I know a lot of folks out there are experiencing this. I purchased 3 MacBooks, two new White 2.0 GHz C2D and one refurbished 1.83 GHz. I can't get the new ones to log onto the 2Wire network. The refurb has no problems. A 17" PowerBook has no problems.
The software for the refurb and one of the 2 GHz MacBooks are all up to date. Those two were set up in another location and were logged into another home network. I'm getting suspicious about the firmware loaded into the MacBook's AP cards.
The 2.0 GHz MacBook Airport Extreme firmware version is 1.0.27p3. I don't know what the 1.83 GHz firmware version is because that one is far away with its recepient (I'll have to call him and find out). My PowerBook and G5 Airport Extreme cards both use the same version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18).
Does anyone out there know if there are any differences between the Airport firmware loaded in an older MacBook (MA254LL/A or FA254LL/A) and the current ones (MA700LL/A)? If there is, it looks like the the current models are incompatible with 2WIRE wireless networks. Apple, what did you folks tweak between the original MacBooks and the current (late 2006) ones and can we please get an Airport firmware update that either regresses back to that or fixes this issue?

Opus_Maru, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no way for the user to directly affect the version of firmware being used by the AirPort Extreme card or the built in 802.11g wireless capability. The firmware is updated silently and without any notice when an AirPort Software update is applied to the Mac.

  • Where are the settings for the internal Airport Extreme Card?

    Here is my problem.
I have a Xbox Slim. It was connected wirelessly to my old Mac computer which had a external Airport Extreme b/g. Connection worked perfectly and had no issues.
I bought a new computer a iMac with OS X 10.6.7. It comes with a built in Airport Extreme Card that has wireless connection for b/g/n.
I set up my wireless connection on my new computer. We have two iphones and they both connect to the new wireless network with no problems.
When I go to connect my xbox slim it asks me for WEP, which I enter, but when I go to test connection I get a error message. The connection fails between the xbox and my network. Says unable to connect and then gives me a bunch of troubleshooting messages which none seem to work.
Under the IP Settings is says Automatic and has a IP address listed and a Subnet Listed. The Gateway is all zeros.
When I go into the Airport settings the DHCP is turned on.
Now I know my next option is enter the numbers manually which I have tried several times. I don't really know if I'm getting the right numbers or not because its a new iMac and everywhere I search people are getting the IP addresses, router numbers, etc. from PC's or from external routers. I need to get mine from the internal Airport Extreme Card.
I have also read posts for setting your options for Mac Filtering. But I don't know where to adjust these. I don't see any options for configuration for a internal Airport Card.
Where do I adjust the settings for Mac Filtering, Signal Strength, b/g/n, etc?
I know my Xbox's connection is fine because I plug in my old Airport Extreme and it connects just fine. But I don't want to use my old wireless router. I would like to just use the connection that is built into my iMac because it has the 'n' network. Is that even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    there aren't any.
check out [this|http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3797169] discussion. it is rather old but the facts remain unchanged.
you might want to have another look @ your airport extreme or get a newer, [refurbished_|http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macaccessories?mco=MjEwNzM3NjE] extreme (there currently aren't any) or time capsule. these base station are *simultaneous dual-band* capable, meaning they broadcast on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands @ the same time.

  • Difference AirPort express version 2005 and the latest AirPort station

I have AirPort express version 2005, what are the difference with the the latest AirPort station? What will be the advantage for me to upgrade to new one.
    I have a G5(no AirPort card)+PowerBookG4 (with AirPort)+iPhone 3Gs
Away from my home, can I use FileSharing option to access my G4 or G5 via iPhone?
    Thank you

The 802.11n version of the AirPort Express will provide the following that the older Express cannot:
Ability to "create" a faster 802.11n wireless network
Ability to "join" an existing wireless network and provide an ethernet signal
Ability to "extend a wireless network" if the network has been created by another "n" Apple router.
Ability to support multiple printers when used with a powered hub
These "features" may or may not benefit you. How were you planning to use the "new" AirPort Express in your network?

  • Is 6.3 the latest Airport extreme update?

Trying to get my replacement Airport Extreme Base up to speed. The latest update (Numerically) is 6.3..but that came out last Jan.? I know that with 10.4.8 came with an airport update, but I don't know how I can get just that particular one. I don't want to re-download 10.4.8 again. Thanks, Bill

The latest firmware for the Airport Extreme Base Station is 5.7
The latest firmware for the Airport Experss Base Station is 6.3
The latest Airport software for Macs is 4.2

  • HT204057 I have the latest airport extreme. can not access the files.

I have previously time machine backups for two macbook pros on same drive.
However, I connect the drive to the airport extreme and although I see the drives and the backups, I can not access the files over Airport Extreme.
    What am I doing wrong?

You can't access a Time Machine backup that way. Connect the drive directly, hold down the option key, and select Browse Other Backup Disks from the Time Machine menu.

  • Airport utility is not working on Windows. I can configure Airport Expresses with the Macbook but multiple computers with Windows and the latest Airport Utility time out after trying to connect to the router for setup.

I have been trying to setup Airpot Expresses (both old and new models) for a while now with the Airpot Utility 5.6.1 for Windows without any luck. I have tried this on multiple windows machines, factory reseted the devices if I needed to, but I have not had any success since this software arrived. I see the routers on the Airport Utility UI, I click on it then try to connect to set it up. At this point, it gets stuck with a long progress bar trying to connect to the device without any success. I also have a Macbook Pro, and this device & software has had no trouble setting up the routers. The problem is, we are shipping these small routers out to customers who use Windows machines and it is vital that the user can modify the settings using Airpot Utility. I am at a loss for what to do and if we can't find any solutions, we are going to move on to a different company for the routers we ship out.

Thanks a lot i followed the instructions for safe mode (i found out that i was pressing the C button after restarting) i did whats written there but the repair couldn't be performed so in addition i needed to re-formate the HD so i erased the volume and then repaired the disk--> quite disk utilities --> start the installation from the installation DVD.
    Thanks really appreciating your help

  • Does the latest airport extreme (A1521)support VPN, WCCP or proxy configurations?

First of all can I enable WCCPv2 on my airport?
And where is the proxy settings so that I can offload DNS caching
Can I add vpn client for a vpn services (https://www.privateinternetaccess.comy)
I saw this but asking anyway

The answer is no to all of your questions.. airports support none of those things.

  • Existing files on drive connected to latest Airport Extreme do not show up, however files copied over the air to the drive do. Any ideas?

I have the latest Airport Extreme with a Seagate drive connected. I copied files to the drive while it was connected to my MacBook Pro. The files do not show up when connected to the AE, but they appear when connected to the Macbook, Files copied over the network to the drive appear. The drive is formatted HFS+.

After playing with this for the last few days, I found a solution. Under the "Disks" tab in Airport Utility, the "Secure Shared Disks" drop down needs to be set to "With device password". Mine was set to "With acounts", which even after correct authentication, none of the files would appear.
Another interesting note:  The files that I could see, the ones I copied over the network, do not appear now. I can copy over new files, and they show up, but the ones copied prior to changing the "Secure Shared Disks" option, do not.

  • Windows 7 with latest AirPort Extreme

I have just bought the latest AirPort Extreme. Set-up using airport utility on all my apple products worked like a charm. I then installed airport utility and updated it in my old windows 7 laptop.
    - airport utility on windows 7 cannot detect the wifi network
    - windows 7 can however see the wifi network when I go to network properties, but it cannot connect to it
    - I tried shifting the AirPort Extreme from WPA 2 to no security, and windows 7 still cannot connect nor is airport utility finding the network
    - I tried changing the channel on the AirPort Extreme to channel 11, still nothing
My old laptop on windows 7 has a b/g wireless card. I am afraid the AirPort Extreme is not compatible with b/g, or if it is, do I have to set it to it, and if so where?
Any other tips as to what I could change in the settings of the AirPort Extreme or windows 7 to either have airport utility see and connect to the network, or connect through windows 7 network properties?
    Thanks
    Philippe

On one of your Macs, run the utility, select your base station and click the edit button. Select the wireless tab,
Then click the Wireless Options button
Pick Radio Mode and see what works best for all your systems.
    Hope this helps.

  • Fitting drive from dead TC into latest AirPort Extreme

I See that the latest AirPort Extreme is the same design as the time capsule and on tear down it shows the empty hard drive bay. My 2012 time capsule has died but the drive is fine so I wondered if I could put it in an AirPort Extreme which wouldn't cost me so much? Any experts out there who can answer this?
    MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The Extreme has no hdd fittings.. so if you put the hdd into the extreme you would also need to solder on a surface mount connector.. and obtain the correct cables.. which are non-standard. ie no shop or internet site has the cable you need. So this is fundamentally a hack job beyond the hackers dreams.
Sadly death of the Gen4 hardware is very hard to fix.
If you have a dead Gen4 carcass why not have a go at reflowing the solder.
    I gave some instructions here.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/gen4-a1409-issues
I have no long term info on if the repair is successful.. It will take a few more goes and a few more successes and a year or two of operation to know if the problem has been solved. I would have pursued Apple to replace it, via purchase of an item on which you could extend warranty via applecare like the Apple TV as I suggested.
If you want to use the hard disk in a TC.. the Gen3 is more reliable. It is the same board as the Gen4 with a somewhat poorer wireless card. You can often pick up second hand Gen3 very cheap.. and use the hard disk in that. The speed over network of Gen3 is same as Gen4 and not that different to Gen5.
Or do what most people do and simply buy a USB holder and use the hard disk in that. You can buy cheap holders for a few dollars from stores like OWC.

  • Airport Extreme card problems

I just installed an Airport Extreme card in my daughter's out-of-warranty 1.07 GHz G4 (12 inch) i-Book, running OS 10.3.9, which never had a wi-fi card in it before. System profiler recognizes the new card OK, and I also ran the latest software update which changed the firmware to 400.17 (3.90.34.0.p11).
At first I couldn't get it to find the signal from my Linksys router, on which three or other Macs are currently running, two of them with wireless connections, the others with ethernet. No problems ever with any of them or with the ISP (Comcast broadband through a cable modem).
However, when I brought the i-book to within a foot or less of the router, the AirPort signal would come up OK and the internet would work normally. But with anymore distance than that, no success, and the signal would fade out. I tried re-installing the card several times, being particularly careful that the antenna cable was properly plugged into the card. No change.
Then I removed the new Airport Extreme card from the i-Mac and installed it instead into my main computer, a dual processor G5 also running 10.3.9 (having of course unplugged the Ethernet cable). This time the Airport card worked perfectly at the ordinary distance from the router. (I had actually managed to find the original little T-shaped external antenna from the box of never-before-installed G5 parts, and plugged it into the correct hole.)
Then to doublecheck, I ran the "hardware test" CD-ROM twice on the big G5 machine (once slow, once fast) and both times it showed the Airport Extreme card as "passed".
So I pulled the card out again and reinstalled it into the i-Book. Same same as before... works OK only a few inches from the Linksys router's antenna, but not further away than that.
Obviously it would appear that there is an internal antenna problem on the i-Book. So looking for a shorted cable, using a digital VOM I measured the resistance between the little aluminum outer block on the i-Book antenna wire connector and the interior of the pin extending from it and it showed only 0.8 ohms or so, which I would have thought indicated a short circuit. But then I took the same measurements on the big G5's internal antenna connector and it showed the same!
    Hmmm.
The supplier of the Airport Extreme card gave me an RMA at my request but I told their tech dep't on the phone that I was quite sure the card itself was fine. Any ideas on any this? I'm stymied.
Thanks out there for any feedback.
    AP

    Hi jeyl,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
There's no need to return the card nor is there a problem with the iBook. It's most likely the antenna isn't fully inserted into the card. It takes much more force than you'd think necessary to insert it. This article illustrates a properly attached antenna.

  • Which Airport Extreme Card for 1.25Ghz 17"

I am trying to purchase an Airport Extreme card for my 1.25Ghz iMac G4 17", but I seem to be finding a lot of iBook and other random Extreme cards, so I am lost which one is compatible with mine.
I found this one that also is combined with a Bluetooth card. I would love if this is the right one or if it will even work because i hate having to use the corded mighty mouse with it.

That linked product looks like this one, which is described more accurately below, and is not for an iMac G4

This is the correct AirPort Extreme card for your iMac G4 model
    http://www.megamacs.com/item/Airport-Extreme-Card/view,3471750/criteria,airport% 20extreme/
It does not include Bluetooth. The best way to add Bluetooth, if that is important, is with a USB Bluetooth adapter. This is the one that Apple officially approves for use with Macs that do not have built-in Bluetooth.
    http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DBT-120-Wireless-Bluetooth-Adapter/dp/B00006B7DB
Since that G4 iMac has USB 2.0, you may want to consider a USB wireless adapter as well, instead of the AirPort Extreme card. Here is one, sold by OWC (a Mac-oriented vendor).
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXP802NU2C/
It (probably) costs less, and it uses the faster 802.11.n standard (compared to 802.11g used by the AirPort Extreme card). You will have to install driver software, but that is provided with this adapter and it supports Panther (10.3.9) or later. And you don't have to open up the iMac to install it. If you get a different brand, make sure Mac OS X drivers are available for that product.
The advantage of the AirPort Extreme card is that (once installed internally) nothing appears connected on the outside, and no additional driver is needed.

  • Guest Network not working in latest Airport Extreme

Just bought the latest Airport Extreme (802.11ac), and want to enable the Guest Network.
    - Installed latest firmware
    - Set Airport in Bridge Mode
    - Enabled Wireless Network
    - Enabled Guest Network
There is no connecting to Guest Network (iphone) and if possible (macbook) there is no internet.
With a previous version of Time Capsule, the Guest Network in the same setting worked like a charm.
Anybody seen this before or is the Airport Extreme working different than a Time Capsule?

According to the theory what you are saying about the A1355 is not possible.. ie there is no guest in bridge.. I have tested it and can assure you it did NOT work.. it fooled me into thinking it should and I spent many hours working on it.. our forum expert here.. Bob Timmons set me straight.
Now I am always a believer in voodoo and gremlins and maybe the tooth fairy when it comes to wireless.. it is about 80% of the above and 20% science.. so please do the test again and see if it is possible.. but I can assure you.. apple have set guest network to off in bridge.
There are ways around it.. complicated methods. ie if you extend wireless to your TC.. from another apple router where the router is on, then guest can be used. You can also use a managed switch to set vlans for the guest.
See the following which I used to research this topic.

  • Latest airport extreme noise issues

Just received the latest Airport Extreme.  Worked perfectly for 2 days and still does.  But, started emitting the noise that others have described, sort of like the static or popping from an old radio.  However, continued to work normally. Noise lasted for about an hour and nobody was using the network. It has been quiet now for about a day.  The unit continues to perform normally. Are there any other recent updates on this issue?

No, it is not common.. but anything with internal power supply will occasionally have a loose inductor.. with your 50 or 60hz mains buzzing through it.. a loose winding can make strange noises.. some caps can also make noises.. the incoming AC is rectified to 300-400v DC is a lot of volts and stresses a poor component. There is also a mechanical fan.. and fans are also a source of all kinds of noises. I would say this is entirely a hardware fault and has nothing to do with firmware.. so it is not going to be updated. It is simply going to need replacement.
If it starts again.. in fact I would power off the AE overnight.. and power up cold the next morning.. and do that every night for the next week.. if it ever does it again.. return immediately to apple for replacement.. The build quality of the AE and TC is less than spectacular.. my first new AC model Time Capsule lasted less than a week. Replacement is fine.

  • Airport Extreme Card does not fit into my laptop.

I recently purchased an Apple iBook G4 and a separate Airport Extreme Card. Maybe I'm just Mac-illiterate, but I can't figure out how to install the card. I've studied the directions in the manual and online but the diagrams don't seem to correspond with my laptop. For example, my laptop does not have the grey wire or metal bracket that are shown in Figure 6 at http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/ibkg4/ibg4-apc-cip1.pdf. In fact, that whole area in my laptop looks very different from the way it looks in the image. The card doesn't fit/snap in anywhere under the keyboard.
Am I totally missing something? Is the card supposed to be installed elsewhere? Did I perhaps purchase the wrong card?
Any support you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Hopefully my question isn't too stupid!

Current generation iBook G4's have a built in Airport Extreme interface - they don't make use of a user-installable Airport Extreme card.
Does your Mac have an Airport menu item (the fan-shaped icon near the right side of the MacOS menu bar)? If so, it already has an installed Airport interface.
