2x Xraid + 2 XServe how to use XSAN?

Hello List Users!
I have 2 XRaids and 2 XServes Systems. Each XRaid have 2 Arrays 7x500GB Raid5 and 7x 750GB Raid5.
The 2 Systems backup each other. I would like to publish all Diskspace on each XRAID as one big Networkvolume (2,5 + 4,0 TB) to the public (Just to make it clear for each Xserve/XRaid combination one Volume)
Is this possible to be done with XSAN?
Is it worth doing it with XSAN?
Can I use the 2 XServes as Metadata Controller: One as main controller and one as Backup controller?
Is it still possible to install other software on this XServes. I mean
Here you find a PDF and Omnigraffle file for illustration: http://www.ademmler.de/files/ademmler-xsan.zip
Any hints are more than welcome.
Regards Alex

Dear Donald!
Here is what I wanna do: http://www.ademmler.de/files/xraid-B.pdf
I also want to swap all HD Drives and put all 500GB drives into the main System and all 750 GB drives into the Backup System. The BackupSystem then will have some more space, wich is good for "keeping older data" in the backup (overhead). On the Backup System I will have 1 SpareDrive in each Array. On the main System I wont - I will need all space.
What do you think? Is it possible to switch down XRAID and move all HDs from XRAID2 into XRAID1 and get the same Array/Data working . . .? If yes I will have my backup running while I format XRAID2 with all the new 750GB HDs.
Thank you for your advice

  • How to use Xserve to host my ecommerce website

    Hi everyone,
I'm really confused on how to use an xserve to host an ecommerce website I want to start for my business. I'm familiar with webpage code and stuff, but not really with the hosting/dns type stuff. If I were to purchase an Xserve, what exactly would that allow me to do? I'm very wary of hosting my website with some of these hosts out here, and I also believe I'm going to need a reliable website capable of handling a good amount of people all at once. If anyone could please fill in the blanks for me about how I would hook the Xserve up and have it attached to my domain name (for an example we can use mydomain.com as the domain name) and how it would work with the internet coming into my house now, that would be great. I just don't understand how any of that works. THANKS!

    Askacel,
We do this trick for our customers. We are an ISP that manage the Xserve's, Dns and everything, only for Mac's. Find an ISP that gives you co-location and supports Xserves, this way you can concentrate on building your commerce site and let the ISP handle server stuff.

  • Need advice for XRaid and Xserve configuration

    Hi,
sorry for my perhaps dumb question but I am new to XServe RAID and did not find an answer to my problem by searching the forum.
In my (university) department we will change our complete server infrastructure this year and I could persuade my colleagues to consider to switch to apple hardware.
Now the point is that the server installation should be redundant. Thus I would purchase two XServes and set them up as described in the "High Availability Admin" guide on the support pages of OS X Server. As data storage there would be a XServe RAID but the problem is that as I read in this forum you can attach it to only one server without additional equipment. That would mean that in a failure case it would be necessary that someone disconnects the fibre channel cables and plugs them into the second server acting as fail back -> no good.
Then I read about XSan but noticed that you need one (or better two!) additional servers for metadata. As the solution must not cost too much and there is no real need to access data from more than one server at the same time the XSan solution would be real overkill.
So next is a comment I found that it would be possible to use the fibre net switch to make this switching from the failed server to the backup one. Do all fibre switches support this option? How much do those cost? The only machines that would be connected are one XRaid with two cables and two XServes resulting in 4 needed ports.
Of course all different suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks for the answers!
The first tip is interesting (and somewhat pricely more affordable). Unfortunately in a failure case by using the synced RAID there would be some data inconsistencies as the sync process would be made only in certain time intervals, e.g. every hour. When the primary server and its copy of the RAID comes back online there would be the problem to determine which copy of a file is to be kept.
To avoid this problem the time interval of the rsync could be shortened but how much process load does a nearly constant (lets say every minute rsync produce? The network load is not the problem as data could be transferred through the dedicated firewire connection between the two Xserves that is used for IP failover.
The second tip is what I had in mind. As right now I have to fiddle around with several linux servers I am not new to CLI so I will find out how to realize that. If not I will give the consulting team a try.
Are there certain FC switches that can be recommended or a certain brand? Primarily it should be low cost.

  • G5 xserve: How do I boot from a FireWire device ?

    Hi.
I have a PowerPC G5 server WITHOUT a keyboard/display and have just installed Leopard 10.5.1.
After setting up Leopard, I made a backup copy of the server HD onto a Lacie FireWire hard-drive device connected to the FireWire 400 port on the front-panel using Carbon Copy Cloner v3.
The backup appeared to work fine.
However, when I tried to boot from the FireWire device by holding down the system identified button at the same time as the on/standby button and then selecting Light 4 (to quote page 65 of the G5 User Guide… “bypass the current startup disk and start up from any other available startup disk”) nothing happened. Instead, the fans just got louder and louder and louder and louder, with the occasional flash of FireWire device and HD lights. I switched it off after 10 minutes and re-booted as normal from the HD device.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    john

    Tony,
Having thought about this and read Apple's article "how to use FireWire target disk mode" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583), let me play back what I think have to do...
    Assumptions...
    a) A working Leopard system.
    b) I want to go back to yesterday's backup.
    c) I can't use Time Machine as it's an "Advanced" install.
    d) My backup is done via Carbon Copy Clone onto my external FireWire device.
Is this what I would do... ?
    1) Get my PowerBook G4 laptop, which is also running Leopard !
    2) Switch off the Xserve G5.
    3) Connect the FireWire backup to THE LAPTOP !
    4) Connect the laptop to the Xserve using a FireWire cable.
    5) Switch on the G5 and hold down the system identifier button.
    6) When the lights rotate select Light 5 "Begin target disk mode".
    7) On the laptop an icon would appear which is the Xserve HD.
    8) Using the laptop, I then copy from the FireWire backup to the Xserve HD icon.
(I guess, as the fans may be running flat out at this point !)
    9) After the backup then eject the Xserve HD icon.
    10) Disconnect FireWire cable.
    11) Re-boot Xserve
    12) Should be running yesterday's backup.
    13) Relax !
    Blimey !

  • LOM: How to Use?

I thought that the LOM module on the Xserve has to use a different local IP from the main IP to en0?
If so, in ARD, how would we access this? Do we need to add the IP of the LOM module, or the Xserve?
For instance, the Xserve for me is at 10.0.1.4, LOM is at 10.0.1.5 .... when I add the Xserve, it gives me an option to add the LOM user/pass ... is this the proper place to input the info?
My Xserve did a kernel panic today (warning in all the foreign languages), but when I did a "shutdown" in ARD (Manage --> Shutdown) it didn't shutdown the machine even though it said the command got sent through fine .....
    Any ideas?

Apple Remote Desktop has pretty inconsistent LOM support. It seems to discover its management IP when you add a server, but that seems to be the only thing that's worked for me. There's a command line tool, though, that's super easy to use. Hope I can explain it thoroughly.
In the field, I use the "ipmitool" command within the Terminal. Say I want to shut down a server with the IP address 10.9.8.7:
ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 chassis power off
    Let's look at that command:
    - You've got "ipmitool," the lights-out-management command name,
    - then the -U switch and my username. Simple enough; it's the username you plugged into the LOM unit when you set it up with the setup assistant (or Server Monitor).
    - Next is the -H switch and the hostname (an IP address in this case). This is the IP of the LOM unit, not the server's IP. The LOM really doesn't know what IP you plugged in to Mac OS, so divorce yourself from the idea that one "knows" the other. Yes, the server can find out the LOM's IP, but only after it's powered on and fully conscious, and that's not going to help you in this kind of scenario, buddy!
    - Finally comes the command, "chassis power off," which does a hard shutdown of the box. Replace "off" with "on" when you want to turn the Xserve back on.
    - Not shown here is the server's request for a password once you hit Enter. It's the password for the LOM module. Also, you'll probably need to be on the local subnet, or be logged into a machine on the server's local subnet. If I'm VPN'ing in, I typically just SSH in to another OS X server, then use ipmitool from there.
Now, in the real world, because I'm type-A, I actually do this:
ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 chassis power status
ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 chassis power off
ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 chassis power status
ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 chassis power on
ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 chassis power status
The "status" command simply asks the server if it's on or off. Note that I first check to see if it's on (and presumably crashed or hanging), then I send a power off command. Then, I check to make sure it actually powered off as per my command, then I turn it back on and verify it's back on.
There's also an incredibly useful mode called Serial Over LAN (SOL). Have you ever SSH'd into a computer when you can't get GUI access? Well, with SOL, you basically have a hard-wired SSH session into the Xserve. This is incredibly useful if, like me, you cleverly decide to change your server's IP address, setup a bonded interface, etc. remotely, and lock yourself out. With this command:
    ipmitool -U adurkee -H 10.9.8.7 sol activate
...you will actually establish a direct serial console to the server. From there you can do "ifconfig," "sudo shutdown -h now," and all that good stuff. Beats a hard shutdown (via "chassis power off") if I can avoid it.
There's lots more to this command. If you search online for ipmitool's man page, you'll see a pretty detailed, if somewhat overwhelming, explanation.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can't figure out how to use home sharing

Since the latest couple iTunes updates, my family and I can not figure out how to use home sharing. Everyone in our household has their own iTunes, and for a long time we would just share our music through home sharing. But with the updates, so much has changed that we can no longer figure out how to use it.
I have a lot of purchased albums on another laptop in the house, that im trying to move it all over to my own iTunes, and I have spent a long time searching the internet, and everything. And I just can't figure out how to do it. So.... how does it work now? I would really like to get these albums from my moms iTunes, onto mine. I would hate to have to buy them all over again.
If anyone is able to help me out here, that would be great! Thanks!

The problem im having is that after I am in another library through home sharing, I can't figure out how to select an album and import it to my library. They used to have it set up so that you just highlight all of the songs you want, and then all you had to do was click import. Now I don't even see an import button, or anything else like it. So im lost... I don't know if it's something im doing wrong, or if our home sharing system just isn't working properly.
    Thanks for the help.

  • How to use the same POWL query for multiple users

    Hello,

Batch processing usually involves using actions you have recorded.  In Action you can insert Path that can be used during processing documents.  Path have some size so you may want to only process document that have the same size.  Look in the Actions Palette fly-out menu for insert path.  It inserts|records the current document work path into the action being worked on and when the action is played it inserts the path into the document as the current work path..

  • How to use airport time capsule with multiple computers?

I'm sure there are some thread about this but i couldn't find it... so sorry for that but hear me out! =)
I bought the AirPort Time Capsule to back up my MBP
    And so i did.
then i thought "let give this one a fresh start" so i erased all of it with the disk utility and re-installed the MBP from the recovery disk.
I dont want all of the stuff i backed up just a few files and some pictures so i brought that back.. so far so good.
Now i want to do a new back up of my MBP so i open time machine settings, pick the drive on the time capsule and then "Choose" i wait for the beck up to begin, and then it fails.  It says (sorry for my bad english, im swedish haha) "the mount /Volume/Data-1/StiflersMBP.sparsebundle is already in use for back up.
    this is what i want:
i want the "StiflersMBP.sparsebundle" to just be so i can get some stuf when i need them. it's never to be erased.
i want to make a new back up of my MBP as if it's a second computer...
so guys and girls, what is the easiest and best solution?
    Best regards!

TM does not work like that.
If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
Or do not use TM to the same location. Plug a USB drive into the computer and use that as the target for the permanent backup.
Read some details of how TM works so you understand what it will do.

  • ** How to use TO_DATE function in Stored Proc. for JDBC in ABAP-XSL mapping

    Hi friends,
I use ABAP-XSL mapping to insert records in Oracle table. My Sender is File and receiver is JDBC. We use Oracle 10g database. All fields in table are VARCHAR2 except one field; this is having type 'DATE'.
I use Stored procedure to update the records in table. I have converted my string into date using the Oracle TO_DATE function. But, when I use this format, it throws an error in the Receiver CC. (But, the message is processed successfully in SXMB_MONI).
The input format I formed like below:
    <X_EMP_START_DT hasQuot="No" isInput="1" type="DATE">
Value in Payload is like below.
    <X_EMP_START_DT hasQuot="No" isInput="1" type="DATE">TO_DATE('18-11-1991','DD-MM-YYYY')</X_EMP_START_DT>
Error in CC comes as below:
Error processing request in sax parser: Error when executing statement for table/stored proc. 'SP_EMP_DETAILS' (structure 'STATEMENT'): java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "TO_DATE('18"
Friends, I have tried, but unable to find the correct solution to insert.
Kindly help me to solve this issue.
    Kind Regards,
    Jegathees P.
(But, the same is working fine if we use direct method in ABAP-XSL ie. not thru Stored Procedure)

    Hi Sinha,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I used the syntax
    <xsl:call-template name="date:format-date">
       <xsl:with-param name="date-time" select="string" />
       <xsl:with-param name="pattern" select="string" />
    </xsl:call-template>
in my Abap XSL.  But, its not working correctly. The problem is 'href' function to import "date.xsl" in my XSLT is not able to do that. The system throws an error. Moreover, it is not able to write the command 'extension-element-prefixes' in my <xsl:stylesheet namespace>
May be I am not able to understand how to use this.
Anyway, I solved this problem by handling date conversion inside Oracle Stored Procedure. Now, its working fine.
    Thank you.

  • Sender Mail Adapter - S/MIME - How to use it?

    Hi guys,
I am trying to figure out how to use the S/MIME security parameter of the Sender Mail Adapter in PI 7.1.
Could anyone point me to some useful documentation/examples/blogs ?
Or perhaps explain what steps are involved when configuring this parameter?
We are pulling emails from an Microsoft Exchange server.
    Many thanks,
    Aldo

First of all one sender mail adapter has to be tight with a specific sender email address.
The email has to be decrypted as whole, you cannot decrypt parts of it.
Then you store certificates to secure store in J2EE server and point to it in send agreement, this should be equal to HTTPS setup
    Check security guide:
