2x16 GB RAM instead of 4x8 RAM?

I am planning to buy the new MacPro. I mainly do after effects and cinema 4d. I am confsued wheather to buy a 6 core or an 8 core CPU. Is it worth spending additional $1500 for 8 core?
On the other note, in regrards to the future upgrades currently i am planning to put 2x16 GB rams instead of 4x8 GB rams. So that i can put another 2 more 16 GBs in future. Will this affect the performance of the mac rpo? Can anyone help me on this please.

  • Mac Pro 1.1 to 5.1 comprehensive upgrade advice?

I need some comprehensive advice on upgrade process, over the next 2-3 months, from my current Mac Pro 1.1 which is:
    Dual-Core 2.66 GHz
    8 GB of 1033 ram
120 GB OWC Mercury Electra 3G SSD (boot and data)
SSD backed up to internal 500 GB Hitachi Drive (CCC)
SSD backed up to external 250GB FW800 Drive (CCC)
    Running Lion 10.7.5
    2- 23” Cinema displays @ 1900x1200 res,
    Nvidia GeForce
I’ve had this rig, give or take, for four+ years.
    Main complaints:
Slow Excel and Word updating and editing, Some charts take 5-10 seconds to appear or redraw, in spite of font fixes, 0 ‘recents’ setting, keeping a very clean ‘permissions’ set-up, and other good ‘housekeeping’.
7300GT PCI card starting to get a little "quirky" with occasional mangled screens
    Occasional ‘spinning ball’.
    McDraft slow to redraw.
Generally, the 1.1 seems to be a bit too slow for me. I'm waiting on the computer, too much.
Would like somethingh that has a bit more ‘pop’. I like for the computer to wait on me, rather than the other way around.
Also, have not ruled out that I might be using some more ram and CPU-intensive apps in the future.
In looking at what’s out there used, and from what I read by the experienced folks here on the forum, I see the:
    2010 or 2012 Mac Pro 5.1,
    3.33GHz six-core,
    w/ 3-8GB Ram,
    1 TB Drive
    5870 PCI
Moving up to ML or Mavericks.
    as a very good ‘bang-for my-buck’ candidate. $2000+/-.
I intend upgrade the ram in the 5.1 to 24GB (3x8GB) @ $300., unless somebody talks me into higher, or another ram config.
Since my total usage for the last 3-4 years has remained fairly constant at 70-75GB, I intend to use:
My existing 120GB SSD as a boot for the new 5.1
Buy another 120GB SSD for a data drive
use the 1 TB drive with 2 partitions, to back up the Boot and Docs SSDs,
then do “belt and suspenders similar B/U with the existing Hitachi 500GB drive
all with Carbon Copy Cloner, and bootable.
Will be running one, possibly two, more 23” Cinema displays (or maybe a 23" and 27”)
    User usage profile:
Lots (50-60+) of heavily cross-linked Excel workbooks (many with ten to twenty 2000-3000 line, work sheets) with tons of complex charts, in 15-20 folders.
A lot of long Word docs (100-150) pages, many of which subscribe to the Excel workbooks.
Medium to large, complex, symbol library-rich drawings, in MacDraft
Illustrator – light usage –simple stuff (amateur)
Photoshop – light usage – simple stuff (amateur)
Just getting into some GoPro Movie editing, nothing too big or complex. Vacation and recreation vids. (amateur)
Some Garage Band stuff for my harps (amateur)
Some 40-50 slide PowerPoint stuff, with more to come.
Dragon Dictate, which is a bit sluggish on my 1.1.
    Questions:
Am I about on the right general track?
And I’m ready to get something I can live with for another 4-5 years. Realistic?
Ram upgrade to a minimum of 24GB -32GB? If so, Should I add 2x16 GB ram modules or 3x8 gig ram modules?
Will be leaving some, but not too much, processing speed unused?
What have I forgotten or gone astray with?
    Better/cheaper upgrade?
    Advice?
I know this is a long request, but I'm tying to make it in one concise and unfragmented attempt.

    A couple(?) of clarifying questions:
Are you recommending upgrade to ML10.8? Isn't there some sort of hack involved with that? Or is it just the 32vs64 bit video issue. Anything else?
I believe he meant that buying the 5,1 would give you few benefits beyond being able to run any OS X beyond Lion.  And this might not be critically important for what you do.
You could hack it to run 10.8 or 9, I guess.
However, a new 5770 will take care of the 7300GT/0SX10.8 incompatibility issue, correct?
A 5770 will not allow you to run 10.8 if that's what you meant.  It will work in your Mac Pro so long as you are running, at the earliest, OS X 10.6.4.  That 7300GT is overdue for an upgrade.
50% head room on boot SSD? How do I find how much of current usage is boot? Subtract docs and apps folder sizes from total used?
If I understand...use a new Samsung 250GB SSD for boot and use my existing OWC120 SSD for docs and apps, and that gives me all the head room that I would need, for both SSDs?
SSD for the OS X system and apps only.  System is only 10GB or so.  How much space do need for apps?  50% of 120GB ssd is 60GB.  So as long as your apps don't occupy more than 45GB or so, then you can use the 120GB ssd as your boot drive.
If you don't feel the need to run the latest OS X, then more Ram, a 5770 upgrade kit, and an SSD boot drive should give you a nice boost in performance for just a few hundred dollars.

  • Replaced ram with 1333MHz instead of rec'd 1066MHz, not working

    Hi,
I have upgraded my ram to 8gb of 1333Mhz from 2gb 1066mhz. The bus speed is 1066, but it should work from what i understand. The only reason I went with the 1333mhz is because it was on sale for cheaper than 1066. It is installed, but the mac will not even start up. Instead it beeps and the sleep light flashes. Is they're any explanation? Or should I just return it and buy the 1066?
    Thank you.

  • 400 RAM instead of 333 ina 1,25 iMac

I tried to buy new DDR 2700 333 RAM to upgrade my 1,25 iMac, but I can only find SO-DIMM modules, no stock of the desktop ones.
In every shop i ask for I've been told I can use 400 DDR RAM instead of 333 with no problem, but some sellers tell me I can't use 333 and 400 modules at the same time and others tell me I can use them together.
I would like to replace only the factory accessible module and keep the 512 SO-DIMM I have in the user one.
    I'll apreciate your help.
Thank you in advance, and excuse my poor english.

    Hello,
It would probably be okay but 333MHz shouldn't be too hard to find:
    Crucial PC2700 333MHz 200pin SODIMM
    Crucial PC2700 333MHz 184pin DIMM.

can i use 4gb ram card instead of (2x2) 2gb cards in macbook pro 15" 2.0 ghz

    Hi John,
If your MBP is a 2011, yes, and here is one example: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S4GB/
If your MBP is from 2006, the other year Apple made a 2GHz, the answer is no, as the max RAM is 2GB.
Given that it appears you already have 2x2GB installed, I'm "guessing" you have the 2011 model, so the answer is yes.

  • Tecra M11-17U, WinXP: displays 2.89G RAM instead of 4G

According to http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB82022E0000R01.htm I could expect WinXP (32-bit) to present at least 3.0G up to 3.3G. But I only see 2.89. Is that configurable? How could I enable memory remapping - I do not see anything in BIOS?
    Thanks
    Solved!

Your unit is from Europe, probably the UK. But, this is really the Toshiba USA forum.

The article you posted is talking about the maximum amount of RAM your would see available in Windows.  However, your graphics card uses 'dynamically allocated' RAM. This means that your graphics card has no RAM of its own, but instead uses your system's RAM dynamically as needed. So, this is using up some further RAM.
You could check this thread and the suggestions there:

  • What third party RAM is equal to "1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x8GB" for the NEW, 27" 2014 4K iMAC and is it advisable to buy instead of the Apple upgraded RAM?

What third party RAM is as good as the "1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x8GB" upgrade that Apple offers for the NEW, 27" 2014 5K iMAC Retina?
And is it advisable to buy instead of the Apple upgraded RAM? (my understanding is that third party RAM is not as costly).

go with one of the quality sources for ram OWC and Crucial are very well thought of
your options with the 5K  when you buy it are
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x8GB [Add $200.00]
    32GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x8GB [Add $600.00]
you might  want to go with the 16GB option when you buy if you know you might want to go to 32GB some day as that will get you to 32zb at the lowest cost. or you can start with the 8 and add 8GB sticks as you need them but if you are not happy stopping at 20GB you will end up with a pair of 4GB sticks to try to sell on ebay... or if you are lazy like me you get a couple of extra xmas tree ornaments.. i have 35 years of ram methods on my tree now dating back to the extra ram for my Apple ][ extra 8k and not a few obsolete processor ornaments too... dress em up with glitter so they sparkle

Can I use DDR3 ram 1066Mhz memory instead of 1067 Mhz in a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010)?. In my system it shows 1067 Mhz ddr3? Because I am from india. And I could find 1067Mhz DDR3 in any store.

The RAM is actually 1066 2/3. Some manufacturers round it up to 1067 some round it down to 1066

  • Opera Mobile/Mini is the best mobile Browser-no question. It runs on Galaxy Y Why can't firefox do this instead of complaining of the phone's RAM?

Firefox for desktop is the best-I agree and I love it above any another browser. but to keep this rep in place Mozilla will have to make it's mobile browsers compatible with every gadget with an average performance like Opera has done.
    Firefox for android sucks-''FOR NOW''

The Galaxy Y was the cheapest of the Galaxy line up when it came out as it is basically a budget smartphone and has a older ARMv6 (as ARMv7 is required) and only 290MB of Ram when 512+ is recommended.
Mozilla is looking to try and do experimental ARMv6 builds again like the experimental example linked above however the ARMv6 builds can be slower, larger and unstable due to ARMv6 not supporting what ARMv7 can.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Shows only 3GB instead 4GB RAM

    Hi,
2 years ago I got a Satellite Pro A200 as a business notebook and it runs with XP SP2, later with SP3. With 2 GB it shows 2 GB of memory in Windows - and I know it has a Radeon 7500 with 256MB of individual graphic memory, and it has no shared memory.
I upgraded it to 4 GB, but Windows shows exactly 3 GB. BIOS shows 4 GB and the ATI system monitor shows 4 GB. I know that 4 GB is not possible in XP 32 bit, only on Windows 2003 R2 32 bit or Vista - but on desktop systems I have seen values between 3.3 and 3.7 GB.
So where is the memory? It looks like a bug - the memory chips have both 2 GB I have verified this. Because it is a company notebook I can't just upgrade to XP 64 bit :-(
In the BIOS are no options - first I thought it's the graphic card, but mine has independant graphics with own memory so the computer comes up with 2048 MB or 4096 after the upgrade.
Shared memory would show about 1900 MB of RAM to the OS like my private EEEpc.

First of all 32bit OS (no matter if its XP, Win 2003 R2, Vista or Win 7) will not recognize 4GB RAM but only 3.2GB (and not 3.7GB)
I have no idea where you looked for available RAM but you should run DXDIAG in RUN.
Then you should get some details and also the available RAM.
Secondly the graphic card supports Local cache (256MB) and HyperMemory.
HyperMemory of the graphic card depends on the available main RAM memory.
For example the unit supports 1024MB RAM (1GB) then the hyper memory would be 256MB this part of RAM would be shared with graphic card!
This is the reason why the only 3GB are shown...

  • Is there a way to make all addons not write anything locally, instead use ram memory?

Pretty much what it says right there.
Is there a way to make all addon's write only on RAM?
I'm pretty certain Private Browsing only works for vanilla Firefox, and many addons don't keep that in mind.
Is there a firefox setting I can manipulate to make everything RAM only? Something like limiting the amount of data addons can write on disk or something along those lines?

Session cookies are kept in memory AFAIK and never written to disk.
What makes you think that Firefox is saving them to disk?
You can look at the portable Firefox version if you want to minimize writes to the disk that stores your Firefox profile.

  • Is it possible to persuade software to use RAM instead of hard drive?

I have 16GB in my iMac and also in my MacBook Pro, the only times I see it really being used is when I run virtual machines that forcibly grab 2GB or whatever, that I have told them to grab.  Most programs tend to run with just their own code in memory, the video files or image files seems to be streamed from the hard drive, even when I have easily enough RAM for it all to fit uncompressed.
I appreciate this may be down to the way those programs have been coded, I have checked preferences in one of them and found nothing about how to handle the data or memory.  Perhaps a good old-fashioned RAM Disk could be used?  Is there such a feature in Lion or Mountain Lion, or a 3rd party application to do this?  I just would like to speed up video editing and photo editing tasks, which appear to always make use of the hard drive.  Surely these tasks would run faster in RAM.

Video and photo editing apps tend to swap around and build up files between the applications and the hard drive.
And, yes, this the way it is supposed to work! There is nooo way to circumvent this.
Photo editing aps, like Photoshop for example, created a working file that is three to four times larger than the original image and can get appreciably larger than this as you do complex work on an image.
The same is true with video content. With video, you are working with large files and clips and using complex editing and effects on video. The size of these types of files can grow appreciably, also.
These sort of apps are very CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive intensive applications.
It maybe that you do not have suffucient internal hard drive space left for working on these type of files in these applications.
How much internal hd space do you have remaining on your iMac's internal drive?
You may have to looking into using a much larger external FireWire 809 drive for doing your video and photo editing work.
Also,,if your video work is that intense, if you have a 2010 or newer iMac, you can install up to 32 GBs of RAM.
The 16 GBs of RAM you have now may not be enough to handle the complexity of the video projects you are working on.
It's probably fine for photo editing, though.
Another option, if your iMac is out of warranty, is to bit the bullet and have installed by Apple certified center, the largest Solid State Drive (SSD) you can afford to add an additonal faster boot drive to your iMac.
These SSD's don't come in really large storage sizes, yet, (you would still need to supplement storage with an external larger drive), but since SSDs contain no moving parts, the system and applications would run much snappier.
