3.0 .avi problems

I've been working on a project for sometime, and until yesterday, everything worked fine. Now, all of the .avi files in the project can't be found (though they've never been moved), and when I reimport them, they are only found as audio files. I've used GSpot and, apparently, all of the codecs for all of the videos are installed and working correctly. Is there a specific codec I need just for PE3?
Thanks!

As Neale points out, AVI is but a "wrapper." Almost anything can be inside that wrapper. This ARTICLE will give you much more background.
As far as CODEC's are concerned, this ARTICLE will fill you in.
When you ripped the DVD, you started with a compressed MPEG-2 format file, and then you used additional heavy compression with the Xvid CODEC. That is a delivery-only CODEC, designed to produce streaming media for playback, and not for editing. You have lost quality twice in this workflow, and have created a file, that is not likely to be edited in PrE. Some NLE's do a much better job, than PrE. I would recommend that you either use one of them, convert to DV-AVI, or rip the DVD's to DV-AVI, which will edit smoothly in PrE. One NLE that seems to do better with Xvid and DivX is CyberLink's PowerDirector.
Remember, simple playback is much different, than editing that same footage. As Xvid is designed for streaming playback, so long as one has the CODEC installed in the system, playing is OK. It is when one goes to edit that material, that problems arise.
Good luck,

  • Import avi problems

I been running premier cs3 on a single processor system for the past few
months with good results. Yes it was slow, and rendering was like watching
    paint dry.
So this past week I bought a new system, with a core2 Quad 28.3 processor.
It is awesome, benchmark at 1521 ( my old system was 362). But premier is
misbehaving. When I import an avi it only sees the audio tracks, not the
    video.
When this first happened I assumed that there was something wrong with the
avi file. So as a test, I dug out some avi files I'd used on my old PC (they
had worked just fine on the old work horse). But even when I import and
insert those proven quality files, no video on the timeline. If I check the
properties of the avi, the report only describes audio, no video.
I'm sure this is something simple, a setting or preference I've missed.
    I'm open to any suggestions.

  • Premiere CS3 AVI Problems!! (plz help)

I'm using Adobe Premiere CS3 on my Computer and I'm trying to import this AVI footage-- Now the footage imports smoothly BUT when I put it on the timeline it shows grey/pixelated image. I can hear audio, but the video doesnt play properly. I've tried Downloading numerous codecs to fix it, but I'm not sure that's the issue...
I can preview the AVI outside of Premiere using any media player and I can edit the same footage in After Effects..
ALSO I have Adobe Premiere CS3 on my iMac and I can preview the SAME AVI file without having that pixelated problem like I do on my computer..
I'm not sure what's up with my PC's version of Adobe Premiere CS3 or what.. **This particular AVI is a Panasonic DV Codec (i think) which I have.**
This/These video(s) with that type of AVI just doesnt work with the timeline's preview whereas all the other video types work fine... (For example, I can take the footage into After Effects and export it as an AVI and THEN it plays with Premiere with slightly altered quality..)
If anyone has some idea, let me know--
    Thanks,
    Ari

    DV Type 2 AVI
Also-- I'm messing around with it trying to figure out the issue.. I think that it could be after effects. I think the intro to the video was made with AE or motion and Premiere isnt recognizing the colors or something..
I made a little animation in After Effects and exported it and Premiere wouldnt play it-- It imported it, but it wouldnt play on the preview window..
I just put that animation into GSpot and it showed me that it's a DV Type 2 AVI ( AVI v1.0 )
So there must be something going on with the AVI v1.0 and my Premiere doesnt want to play it.. I still cant figure out the solution though.

  • MPEG4 and AVI problems

I just picked up a 80 gb Ipod classic and am having a problem uploading movies to it. Perhaps someone can help me out.
I have the upgraded version of Itunes and about 4 movies that I'd like to slap on my ipod, most of them in AVI format but with one in MPEG4. Itunes will add the avi files to my itunes library so I can try to convert them that way. But that isn't the end of it.
The MPEG4 file can be added to the library easily enough.... but when it goes through the conversion process, all it leaves me with is perfect sound and a plain white screen.
I'm thinking that I need to convert these files BEFORE they go on Itunes, but I can't be sure. Anyone have any suggestions???

No it didn't do the job. Not even close - so I'll open this one up again. It's hardly news that VideoLan is agnostic on these issues - all of us Mac people have defaulted to that player for years whenever QT has had compatibility problems - even with final public release codecs installed to enable QT to function.
Moving to another player platform is hardly a long-term solution for whatever Apple is attempting to integrate into the 7.1 - 7.1.1 series of their QT player. 7.1 was faulty; 7.1.1 doesn't sound anymore agreeable.

  • Exporting AVI problems

i have a 1:14 hour long sequence in final cut. Dv pal 25fps 720x576. When i export it to avi it all goes well, but when the export is over, when i go to open the file in quicktime or any other player like vlc nothing shows up.
The file info shows thats is a 14gb file with 1:14 hour, so it's all correct but no video or audio shows up when i open it, and it doesn't appear any error message.
Can anybody help me on this?

yes it can play avi files. actually i exported another video from final cut in 1440x1080i to avi with no problems. but that video lenght was 7 min. This one in dvpal is 1 hour long. i am working on a ntfs disk with macfuse and ntfs3g but i export the files to a mac os extended disk, and i have also tried to put that files that i use for edit, in a mac os disk, but when i export it to avi using quicktime conversion the same happens, i have reinstalled final cut and quicktime, i have clean the plugins folder in final cut but it keeps the same...

  • AVI Problems

In FCE HD, I was able to put in AVIs and play them and edit them with no problem. But now, when I put AVIs (from the same exact place) I get a "General Error" than another error message saying, "Out of Memory". Obvioulsy I am not out of memory. I have 1GB of memory and my iStat Pro tells me that not a lot of memory is being used.
Was there a QuickTime or Final Cut patch that stopped AVIs from working?

As VJK said, your system drive should not be your scratch drive. AFAIK, AVIs still work fine in FCE/FCP. At least they do for me. If you can't afford more memory, you could always convert them to a better format before editing.

  • AVI problems on Captue

    Hi,
When I publish my movie as Flash it works ok. When I publish it as AVI, theSlides and the audio become entirely unsyncronized: the audio is much ahead of the slides.
Can anybody suggest how to solve it ?
    Thanks per advance
    Abraham

Bumping this, as I am having the same problem.  My video is just under 13 minutes, and the audio is out of sync with the video by almost 20 seconds by the last minute.  The issue does not exist when previewing the entire project within Captivate, and it does not occur if the output is to the Adobe Connect format.
I'm working with Captivate 4, using the AVI, Cinepak format.  I'm using Cinepak because it is the only one that will play within a non-encoded video player (Windows Media Player, etc) and isn't a ridiculously massive file size.  The .cp is 11 MG, the Adobe Connect file is 14 MG and the AVI Cinepak is 832 MG.  I tried other AVI options and the smallest file size was 2.13 GB.  That is simply unacceptable, so I'm stuck using the Cinepak option.
Any input or ideas on the sync issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • .avi problem

some of my .avi's only have video no sound. i open them and it says quicktime may need additional softwear to play takes me to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=61646563&c subtype=6d732000 but it doesn't actually say witch one i need i had this problem for my windows computer i fixed it by downloading the AC3 codec i found an AC3 codec for mac i downloaded it an its a .sit file witch none of my applications support. does any one no a solution? maybe another codec or a .sit opener
note: i already have divX and it doesn't seem to help

While you're downloading codecs I'd use the program that's recommended by Microsoft for AVI (Audio Video Interleave) files on OSX. It won't open all of the strange, proprietary flavors that have some imbeded special properties, but it works for many.
    Fip4Mac
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
The installer puts a codec in your quicktime codec folder and also installs a viewer program that I never use. Most AVI files just play inside the Quicktime player window.
Some AVI files will just not work on a Mac due to the developers using the AVI format as an envelope to carry their proprietary, windows only, data.

  • QT7.1 Intel Mac and .AVI problems

i Downloaded a .AVI file and cant watch it. i read in a mac magazine i need DviX to watch it with. i DL that and Divx Doctor 2.
the doctor converted the AVI in to some other format. now i can hear the sound. but all i get is a white screen in QT. i get a pop up saying i am missing some components and go online to get them. but Which components are missing?!
for future DLs shouldi stick to MPEG formats to save hasstle?
    anyone help?

  • Cs3 avi problems

I am working on a project for work, just a short documentary film, and there is a small issue. The time given to me was not enough, and so I decided to take it home and finish the editing in the comfort of my own house. I brought it today to check if everything works, but it doesn't. I can open the file in my adobe premiere cs3, but when I find the .avi files there is an error message saying "Unsupported format or damaged file." I know this is pure crap, as I was using these exact files in the same version of cs3 earlier today. I don't know why this message would come up, any ideas?

For MPEG-2, PrPro installs the Adobe MainConcept MPEG-2 CODEC. The installation uses a non-standard naming convention, to "hide" that CODEC from other programs, that might overwrite it. See this ARTICLE for a bit more detail on how this naming convention will likely lead to false errors from G-Spot, or a utility, like Sherlock the CODEC Detective.
If the Adobe MainConcept CODEC becomes corrupted, or its priority changed in the Registry, a Repair Install of PrPro will usually fix this. There are also ways to hack the Registry, or use other utilities, to reset the priority, but the hacking takes knowledge, patience and skill. I will not go into that, as anyone with the ability, already knows how to do it, and what to be so very careful of.
As Adobe uses MainConcept CODEC's, they would be my first stop, if I need a particular CODEC. If they do not offer what I need, I expand my search.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Urgent Premier / avi problem

I have edited a large project in Premier 6.5 and then the original avi source file became corrupted. I reloaded the avi from DV tape but now all my edits and transitions are 7 seconds out of sync i.e. each clip has 7 seconds added to its beginning and ends 7 seconds early. Is there anything I can do other than edit the whole project again? Is there any way that I can tweak the timecode on the original avi file to bring it into line?

I just started using a Samsung SCD80 Mini DV. Today I recorded
a Gospel concert in church and it looked great on the LCD and the
TV but when connected it to the Firewire card and played it through
Premiere 6.0 It was so much darker than the LCD playback. Then I
captured it anyway and placed it on the timeline and added the
Brightness/Contrast to it and set to a brighter setting then exported
the movie and got the same thing, Dark, Dark, Dark. Do you know what
    I'm doing wrong?

  • Annoying Quicktime, Dock Pop-Up and AVI problem

    Hi,
If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate ...
Everytime I watch an AVI file via Quicktime in Full Screen, the dock would pop up from out of nowhere and remain there whilst the movie is playing until I reduce and increase the screen size in QT. I have checked to see whether it could be triggered by mouse movements but this does not seem to be the case, so I'm a little lost as to what could be causing this and how to fix it.
    Any ideas?

Sorry, I do not know the answer. However, apparently you are not alone......

  • Camileo S20 avi. problems

So I have a Camileo S20 and I can watch the videos without any problems in Windows media player, DivX player etc.
But when I try to put it in a editing software like After Effects or Windows Movie Maker i can only hear the sound, but I can't see the video.
Is there anyone that knows how I can fix this?

Im not video editing expert but maybe you need to install some plug-ins or codecs.
    Which OS do you use?

  • Exporting to .AVI Problems

Why when I export to Quicktime .AVI, it looks low resolution, blury, and bad quality?

AVI is just a container and it can hold hundreds of codec combinations. Those that use it are either to lazy, misinformed or stupid to understand that they would be better served by more modern containers like MPEG-4.
A standard Quicktime to AVI export on a Mac would use the ancient Cinepak Video codec developed over 15 years ago. Slow, clunky and very bad video quality.
Because AVI no longer has any industry support it has no rules. Anything goes and no standards exist. Once you learn to avoid it you'll also be making better quality more compatible files.
