3.06 GHz iMac vs dual 2 GHz G5

I haven't been able to find a direct comparison between the latest 24" iMac and the dual processor G5. I'm a designer which means I do a lot of work using Creative Suite 3, and the G5 actually keeps up pretty well after adding more RAM. If the performance is at least a little better on an iMac, I'm seriously considering ditching towers and going to the all-in-one. Especially right now I'm debating between upgrading my monitor or holding out a little longer and then buying an iMac.

Hello:
I made the transition a couple of weeks ago from my G5 dual 2.3 PowerPC to the iMac 24" 3.06. Performance is better, including the Adobe CS4 suite.
There are some who are put off by the shiny screen. I'm a painter and don't find this to be an issue. I've also had good results calibrating the monitor with the eye-one display 2 system.
When I'm not painting onscreen, I often use shade to bring down the brightness a bit, which is personal choice. Also, you would want to upgrade your memory to 4GB.
I trust this helps, and good luck.

  • Best method to go from iMac G4 to iMac G5 dual core

I'm struggling on how best to migrate from my old iMac G4 to a new iMac G5 dual core. I'd happily use the transfer data function at initial set up but wonder if I will be transferring "problems" from the old machine to the new. Is a clean install of all applications, preferences, data, etc. the best way to go? I have CDs for most of my applications, but not some of my shareware stuff. Are there any downsides to the transfer data route? Can I move applications for which I don't have a CD any other way?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would use the Migration Assistant and let it go at that for all my personal files. In the case of applications I would install them directly from the CD's rather than try and copy them. If I was using any applications that I had downloaded, I would just re download them.
Now, some things to make sure of.
    1. Make sure that the software you install is compatible. Even if you just upgrading from a G-4 to a G-5 there are some applications which may need updating. If it is an Intel dual core then you need to check to see if a universal version is available or if it is something that will run under rosetta, if that solution works for you.
    2. Make a complete backup of all your personal files and of course any itunes you have, anything in iPhoto that you have or anything else that cannot be replaced. Things can go wrong!! It may not be a big deal to lose a song you ripped from one of your CD's but it can be an issue if it was a song you purchased from iTunes Music Store so make a backup. If you use Quicken by all means back up your data files. If you use Entourage for mail make sure to back up its database.
If you have applications that you don't have the CD for you can try to copy them from one to the other but sometimes that does not work. There may be files installed for that application that you don't know about. All you can do is try.
Good Luck and I hope you enjoy your new Mac!!

  • Nomad Zen Extra for Apple iMac Intel Dual C

I've looked in the FAQ, tried the download section of support, and cannot find any software for my Nomad Zen Extra to run on a new Apple iMac Intel Dual Core. The new machine uses OS X 0.4, and there seems to be nothing at all.
I also tried loading the software from the disk, and it didn't work (no surprise there since it's all Windows software).
Can anyone offer any suggestions, or do I have to go buy an Apple iPod?
    Thanks for your help.

Why wasn't I warned about this when I purchased the device? There's nothing on the packaging or inserts to point out that the device WILL NOT WORK if one switches to an Apple iMac.
The company's website is equally obscure.
I certainly expected to need new software for the iMac, but not that my Nomad was now a door-stop and wouldn't work.
How do I get my money back from Creative, given that the Good Guys store has been absorbed into Circuit City.

  • Intel Imac or Dual 1.42 G4

I have a first generation Intel Imac w/2gigs Ram. I also have a G4 dual 1.42 with 2 gigs ram. Is there much difference in performance doing Photoshop ( CS2 )? Because I would like to retire my G4 if the IMac is compatable in performance.

Your posting is off-topic, but I'll respond to your question anyways!
Photoshop CS2 isn't a Universal Binary, so it won't run natively on the Intel-based iMac. It will run through Rosetta emulation. I don't know how much performance loss you will encounter by doing this, but according to this post on macintouch.com, an Intel-based Mac performing one effect in Photoshop is much slower than a Powerbook G4 (one processor):

    Steve Laskevitch
I'm an Adobe Certified Instructor, and hoped the Intel iMac would be a lovely addition to my classroom. I'll save the hopes of booting Windows on them (I have clients/students who demand such) for another day.
But I needed to know if Photoshop CS2 could perform adequately for a classroom environment. So I created an automation to put 2 of my machines and an iMac Core Duo to the test.
The Photoshop Action creates a roughly 30MB doc, creates a pastoral scene, sharpens, performs a complicated "Lens Blur", a "Lens Distortion", color corrects, colorizes, masks and quite a few other time consuming things.
Here are some almost scientific results:
    iMac 2.1 GHz G5, 1.5 GB RAM: 1 min. 55 sec
    Powerbook 17" 1 GHz G4, 1 GB RAM: 4 min. 45 sec
iMac 2 GHz Core Duo, 1 GB RAM: 7 min. 45 sec
I'm grateful to the manager of the Apple Store for taking a chance on me by installing Photoshop (it was NOT installed on the Intel box, not surprisingly)
So now I'm hungry for CS2 Universal Binaries. I just wish Apple had shared more with Adobe before releasing these boxes so we wouldn't have to wait quite so long to take advantage of their power.

  • 20" iMac with Dual Monitor?

I have a 20" iMac (early 2009) and i love it! However I've learned lately of dual monitor setups. Can the iMac handle a dual monitor setup? And what are the advantages of a dual monitor setup? I use my iMac for email, web browsing, ichat, ilife, iwork, and mostly word processing on ms office (for school, reports etc.).
What are the pros/cons of dual monitor setup and would I benefit from a dual monitor setup?
Any information and photos of dual monitor setups are welcomed.

The second display extends your Desktop. So you can place your windows on either screen. It's basically like having a bigger screen - more space to work in. That's the main pro.
There are no cons, except maybe the extra space the second display will occupy on your real desktop. On really old Macs, the second display had an impact on performance, but that is a non-issue on current system because the video hardware and CPU are more than powerful enough to run two displays.
Once you connect the second display, you can set it up in System Preference Displays pane Display tab. You can arrange the relative locations of the two screen on the Arrangement tab. You can even move the menu bar and Dock to the second display, if you want to use it as your primary screen.

  • Intel Imac vs Dual G4 800. Upgrade Advice Needed Please.

I have a Powermac G4 dual 800 loaded with RAM and 3 huge HDs and a 15' monitor. I use the Adobe CS2 suite and Macromedia Studio 8 as well as the ilife stuff and Toast. I am in desperate need of more screen real estate. I want to buy a 20'' or 23' display but it would also cause me to spend at least 200-250 to upgrade the graphics card. So I'm lookin at 1000-1300 just for a new display. Seems like a lot $ince I can get a 20" imac for nearly the same. Ive had this g4 quicksilver for a while and its still awesome but besides the screen size a "lil" speedboost would be nice. So...
    1. If I buy a G5 Imac am I kind of throwing money away when I can "buy for the future" with a core duo?
    2. If I buy the Intel Imac 20" will my adobe and macromedia apps run better under Rosetta than a G4 Dual 800. Or Will I be stuck with practically unusable(like virtual PC slow) software. Any experiences?
    3. Should I buy the G5 Imac 20" and let the Intel Core Duo work out the kinks for another year and enjoy better adobe/macromedia performance.
I know these are common questions right now but I was curious about real world performance compared to a G4 dual 800.

Lets say you got the Core duo. I have a 17" and have used CS2 on it, and considering it is being emulated, it is still pretty fast. I have also used CS2 on my friends G4 DP 800 and let me tell you, the iMac is faster. If I were you, I would buy more ram than comes standard. The iMac G5, to me, would be an unwise decision now with the Core Duos.
The problems with the Core Duo are mostly software based from what I can tell. Hanging, Front Row, Remote issues...etc. Once the new OS X update comes out, they should have far less kinks. In the event that you want to wait for the kinks to be worked out and buy a later model, then stick with the G4 until then. It is a workhorse and will get the job done. But thats just my two cents...

  • Where to buy imac compatible dual layer discs?

I am trying to find out where I can buy imac (intel core 2 duo) compatible dual layer DVD discs! Amazing, I can't find anything anywhere, either on the Apple store online or in the actual retail stores, or any other retail stores for that matter! Where can I get something that is reliable good quality and imac compatible??
    Miklos.

There's no "compatible" disks. Any DL +R media will do, though not all brands are as good as others.
Around here (New England) you can find dual-layer DVD+R in supermarkets, music stores, electronics stores (Circuit City, Best Buy, ...), computer stores (CompUSA, MicroCenter, mom and pop, ...), and business supply stores (OfficeDepot, Staples, OfficeMax, etc.). Lots of bookstores round these parts carry it too (though plain DVD+R is more common).
As far as bands, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are always pretty reliable quality. i usually tell people to avoid Sony. That said, 1/2 of my media are cheap CompUSA branded (don't know who makes it), and most of the rest are Memorex -- but only because I got them at a huge discount (CompUSA round here closed and I got the already cheap media in a 50 disc spindle for next to nothing).

  • Can iMac read Dual Layer DVD+R???

If I use Toast to backup my G5 tower data onto a Dual Layer DVD+R disc, will my iMac Flat Panel be able to read it? I've heard that some older drives can't recognize the Dual Layer DVD+Rs.
Anyone tried a home made dual layer disc on this model iMac yet?

These are the formats supported in the iMac G4.

  • Second Life Audio Problems on iMac Intel Dual core

Hello, I just set up my new iMac, and wanted to use Second Life. However, no matter what I do, I get no audio while in the game. I have set the preferences in the game to stream audio and video, but no luck.
Second Life works fine on my G4 Powerbook, and (ahem)Dell PC, but my honking, brand new super duper iMac--no sound!!!
Second Life told me to delete SL and reinstall which I did with no luck.
Preferences for the iMac are set for internal audio input and output, and I can hear iTunes and DVDs, but no sound in Second Life.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can solve this puzzle for me.

"Second Life works fine on my G4 Powerbook, and (ahem)Dell PC"
If that game's not yet optimized for your iMac Intel, play it in Boot Camp instead. Will work better than it does on your Hel.

  • New iMac supports dual display!

I think the single coolest thing about the new iMacs is that it now supports Extending the desktop, rather than just mirroring it, to an external display. I can't believe more noise wasn't made about this feature in the keynote. This is huge and will without a doubt cause me to switch to a Mac for my next purchase!
    Sweeet!

  • Migrate to 2.33 intel imac from dual 2.5 G5

Hi, I'm trying to migrate from my office based G5 to an iMac that I just bought - just so I can have a duplicate system at home. For some reason Migration Assistant tells me that it 'may not be able to transfer from this mac'... and holding the T key down on teh G5 fails every time. I've moved the firewire cable from the front to the back and tried other cables as well....
Anyone any idea why I can't transfer one to the other? I have turned off my passwords, and I dont use Filevault.
Reloading all my software is gonna be, well more than very difficult as I have loads that has been updated over a period of years.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Chris

Actually, I would not be too quick to clone a PowerMac G5 system on to iMac if it happens to be an Intel machine. When a system is installed on any given Macintosh, the Installer always looks at what you are running and it will install only those files that are appropriate for that machine. For a G5 system, you will have files that will not run well (or not at all) on your new machine. In fact you may find that you will not be able to boot up to run anything.
So, I would stick with the idea of putting the G5 machine into Target mode and running Migration Assistant from the new iMac.
Or do what many others do: Install a virgin system on the iMac drive and take the time to install all the files that you want to run on it from scratch. You may get frustrated from time to time, but you will end up with a lean and mean system that runs like, well, a Tiger!

About every 1 1/2 hours, it automatically shuts down to cool off.  Is there any way to manually turn it on?  Or, do they have to be replaced?

I tried that with no improvement.  I think I might have to have the fans replaced.  do you know if this is a particularly difficult procedure?  Something wierd that I've noticed is that if I have a video on for more than several minutes, the fans comes on, and also when I am on a Skype video conference for awhile.  Otherwise, the fan jst doen't come on as the intels heaten up to the point the the auto shut down kicks in...any advise?  This definitely interupts my work!  Thanks for your help and input thus far!
