3.1.2 safari performance vs. 2.2.1
I upgraded to 3.1.2 straight from 2.2.1. Well, it was not really an upgrade, but a complete DFU followed by a recovery with 3.1.2 (i.e. fresh installation).
I found safari to be more sluggish and less stable than 2.2.1. I go to discussion forums (many of them powered by discuz) frequently and leave posts using my iphone. Never had a problem with 2.2.1, but with 3.1.2, safari would crash after a few posts, and each time before it crashes, the keyboard would start responding very slowly.
This behaviour is actually similar to 2.1's safari. So to me it is like the firmware took a step back to the problematic days (at least as far as safari is concerned).
Anyone else has the same problem?
Ok, it is becoming more obvious that the problem is related to the input method...
When I type in English using the regular keyboard on the iphone everything seems fine. But once I change the keyboard to the Chinese (traditional) writing pad, then.. all **** brakes loose after several replies.
This doesn't happen on just one site, so I have reason to believe this problem is iphone related. And specific to 3.1.2. It worked fine on 2.2.1.
Hope someone from Apple will see this post...
Thanks.
(How can I file a problem report?)

Because I often use my iPad or iPhone at home the safari issue hasn't really bothered me until recently and now, rather than just being temperamental, performance is just downright poor. It's taken well over 5 minutes to download ordinary BBC web pages on a 100Mbit broadband network. This has become typical and now my kaspersky for mac security can no longer update its database - really annoyed at the prospect of having to get a new machine as I ordered the 2.7 GHz that took over 6 weeks to ship. Still within 6 months of my initial apple care.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
EHello Poikkeus,
Thanks for taking an interest and offering to help. Unfortunately, my Mac doesn't seem to be able to download any of the versions of istat citing that safari can't find the server - no luck using chrome either. Safari performance does improve with restarting the machine, however, I really don't want to restart my machine every time I use it; I had hoped that I could open my machine from sleep after using it the previous day without any issues. Is this a reasonable assumption? Occasionally I experience poor performance when using my work PC if I hibernate or log off rather than shut down, however, I expected better from my Mac.
Furthermore, Kaspersky have just informed me that the error messages I receive when my security database fails to update indicates that there is a problem with my broadband connection. However, as I mentioned earlier, I have 100MBit broadband and experience no issues when using my work PC, iPad or iPhone.
I'm guessing I'll have to follow your initial piece of advice and visit the Genius Bar to have them resolve the issue...
Many Thanks -
Recently switched bought a macbook. I'm happy with the system except that safari performance completely *****. I spend more time waiting for web pages to load than I do actually reading them. Sometimes have to wait minutes for pages to load. I've poured over configuration documentation (at apple support, at comcast support, on the web) to no avail.
I'm using airport and a wireless router->cable modem to connect to my ISP. My desktop pc / IE which uses a ethernet land line through the same router->cable modem doesn't experience any of these issues. IE by comparison is lightening fast. My work pc laptop / IE which also connects wirelessly through the same network also doesn't express this latency. Any ideas what the problem can be?Try this:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions.
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:

Poor Safari Performance - Mountain Lion OS X
Since downloading and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion OS X, I have had poor performance with internet browsing. With some of my own basic troubleshooting steps, I have determined its Safari is likely to be the culprit. Below are the scenarios;
1. Ethernet; direct connect to 50 Mbps Modem/Router (Cisco DPC3825)
2. WiFi; connected to signal broadcasted by Airport Extreme (3rd Gen) bridged to Cisco Modem/Router
3. WiFi; connected to signal broadcasted by Cisco Modem/Router
*each scenario was tested on both my ISP's DNS, OpenDNS and Google's DNS.
Safari starts and loads home page (www.apple.com) just fine. Searching or navigating to other sites will require several seconds to minutes of delay, sometimes failing to load. Regardless of this slow performance loading pages; speeds from sites like speedtest.net show my ISP is providing adequate bandwidth, often over 50 Mbps.
I have several other devices on my network that work absolutely fine. ThinkPad T410, two Apple iPhone 5's, two Apple TVs 3rd Gen, xBox 360, Dish Hopper and Joey. All provide quick and speedy navigation. For example, movies load up quick via Netflix apps on both Apple TV and xBox. Safari on iPhone will load much quicker than Safari. Often I'll grab my phone getting tired of waiting for Safari to load and am able to pull it up on my phone quickly.
My current system is early 2009 iMac, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB DDR3 memory. Again... a clean install of Mountain Lion.
Also, I loaded the latest FireFox and browsing is perfect. Fast and very responsive. However, using FireFox greatly degrades the Apple iCloud experience and I would greatly prefer to use Safari.
Any ideas on what I can try next to get my iMac back in tip top shape?I was able to make some configuration changes on my Cisco DPC3825 router, my speed is much better. I've tested it for a couple weeks now and have not had any lag in browsing. Here is what I changed;
1. Log into the Cisco Router's control panel.
2. Security > Firewall > Disable SPI Firewall Protection (and any filters that were selected by default or your ISP)
3. Access Restrictions > Basic Rules > removed a site in the blocked domain list
4. I then used Open DNS DNS servers and managed security using Open DNS.
Please take this information lightly, I am not a network expert. But these steps allowed me to get over the problems I listed above. I'm getting very fast speeds and just about 0 lag when browsing internet.
Hope this helps someone. -
Poor Safari Performance - not crashing though
The spinning beachball appears (no clues as to triggers)
Safari is then unresponsive
If I activate another app (eg click on the desktop to activate finder, call up 'force quit' etc), Safari starts working again
Have uninstalled plugins (glims); still the same
The only pattern I can discern is that this seems to happen when multiple users are logged in with browser windows open. It hasn't happened (so far) with just my account logged in.
Any ideas?HI,
Could be a corrupted Safari .plist file.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. IIf Safari doesn't freeze (beachballs), move that .plist file to the Trash. If there isn't any difference, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
I see you uninstalled Glims but it could still be Safari third party add-ons causing the problem. Go here: Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Also, from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons, click Reset. Relaunch Safari.
And go to your Apple Menu / Software Updates. Make sure your system software is up to date.
Remove any login items. Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any documents or apps there. And go to MacintoshHD/Library/Startup Items. Same thing.

Multiple defects in Safari performance
I am using Safari 4.04 and can't list the various performance failures. I've shifted to Firefox which seems to work fine where Safari fails, e.g., sending webmail on Comcast. I first thought it was Comcast that was at fault but when I went to Firefox the Comcast webmail performed. I conclude it is Safari that is at fault.
HI,
You've had this issue for sometime I see. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2133848#2133848 Hopefully the suggestions I've made will help.
You didn't mention anything about Safari maintenance. If you haven't done so, try it.
For Comcast. From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences and select the Autofill tab.
Click the Edit button next to: *User names and passwords*. Delete comcast.com. Click Done.
Relaunch Safari and see if you can access the Comcast site. I've used Safari with Comcast for 5 years without a single glitch from Safari 3 on 10.4 to Safari 4.0.4 on 10.6.2.
If that didn't help...
From the Safari Mnu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If Safari still gives you problems,go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
Also, try recycling the modem. Turn it off for about 5 mins then turn it back on. Restart your Mac and see if that helps.

Safari Performance affecting performance of my Snow Leopard iMac
Ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have noticed Safari being noticeably slower and displaying all kinds of odd symptoms such as Top Sites takes a long time to display, Top Sites icons and icons on Cover flow not displaying, Top sites icons displayed as hash (junk). When Safari goes into this state I am not able to switch to other apps running. Icons on my Dock will not highlight when I run the mouse over them. Basically my iMac seems to have hung. After a long moment (maybe 30 seconds) I will get control back. Snow Leopard has not crashed thus far.
I have noticed also that the performance of Safari affects other applications e.g. I was trying to compile a small test program under Xcode. It took a very long time for something that usually takes a few seconds. I terminated Safari and everything went back to normal again.
This problem did not occur when I had Safari 4 running on 10.5.8. My problems started once I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I have tried all the suggestions on cleaning cache, resetting Safari, deleting various .plist files etc. I've also repaired permissions. Nothing works!
It seems its strictly a problem with Safari and SL. Any other suggestions apart from the usual list of suspects?
Anyone tried reinstalling all of SL (from scratch) to solve these kind of problems? Something left over from 10.5 which should not be there that's confusing Safari and SL?
Thanks in advance.HI,
Please update your profile by clicking My Settings on the right side of this page to reflect the SL upgrade. Thanks!
Try Open DNS https://www.opendns.com/start
You want the free / Basic
Perhaps there is an underlying issue going on. Boot from the SL disk and run Disk Utility to check for errors on the startup disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
And check out Mac OS X - Maintenance
Safari Add ons can cause performance issues... go here.

Major drop in Safari performance!
I have been using Safari for Windows for quite some time. And I have enjoyed it for the most part. Now however, for reasons unknown to me, Safari is grinding to a hault. I open up pages and it takes a HUGE amount of time to load the entire page, if it will even load at all. This discussion board is one of the sites that simply won't load all the way. Flickr too.
I dont know how to fix Safari. I tried cleaning out the cache but that did not help at all.
When I switch to Firefox, I get lighting fast web pages opening. Safari seems a little nuts now but I dont want to switch to Firefox. But as things stand, I will have to since performance is truly bad with Safari.
Anyone know how to speed things up?
I am using 3.0.4
thanks!Strange. I have 3.0.4 and when I run software update, it says all my software is up to date. I went to Apple's Safari download page and 3.0.4 is the only version available.
I had to do all this on Firefox since it takes Safari minutes to load any page now. I am going to miss Safari. I really grew to like it while it worked. -
Sluggish Safari Performance, especially RSS Feeds
Hi all. Running a 1st gen 17" MacBook Pro (2.16Ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 7200RPM 100GB hard drive) with all the latest software updates (10.5.3, Safari 3.1.1).
Over the past couple of months, Safari has become increasingly sluggish for me. From launching the app to completion of loading my home page (macnn.com) takes 18 seconds or more. The computer seems to hit the hard drive an awful lot while surfing, which results in a lot of beachballing and delays. What's especially bad is RSS feeds, which have become nearly useless. For example, loading engadget's RSS feed takes my computer upwards of 45 seconds, complete with a good portion of beachballing. Pretty worthless considering just loading their whole website takes seven seconds.
I've tried reinstalling Safari, which didn't help. I'd really hate to have to wipe my system entirely, but it looks like that might be what it takes. That won't fix your problem. You'd be far better off turning off RSS in Safari and deleting any feeds you have there, and using a dedicated RSS reader such as the open source Vienna or NetNewsWire.
Try that first and see if things don't improve.

Did you use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions both before and after you updated to Safari 4.0.2? If not, do that now.
Then, one thing that +* could*+ be causing your crash is your Glims extension, located here:
/Library/InputManagers/Glims and
/Library/Application Support/Glims/PlugIns
You're running v 1.0b7, while the current version is 1.0b19. Remove those items then try restarting Safari.
After that, you can speed up your Safari performance by doing these things, too:
Quit Safari if it's running and open System Preferences>Network.
In the DNS Server tab, make sure IPv6 is turned off, and enter these two DNS servers to replace the ones you currently have:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Next, do these things in order:
1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
(use the Get Info panel to Lock those two folders immediately above if you don't want to use Top Sites or Cover Flow)
4. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
6. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
Downloads.plist
History.plist
Form Values
LastSession.plist
WebpageIcons.db
Then restart Safari and see if the speed is improved. -
Safari won't open certain web pages and download/stream speed slow
I have recently been experiencing problems with viewing certain websites, content on websites, streaming video, and downloading files. Sometimes the website will load but all the images will be blue question marks. I cannot get anything to load on youtube. Streaming video on Netflix is really slow as well. My bandwidth allowance on my network is 3 mbps (I'm the only user) and I have been getting between 40-300 kbps when downloading things. I have restarted Safari, my computer, and still no change. Any idea on what's going on? Thanks!

Snow Leopard 10.6.8
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAMWelcome to Apple Support Communities.
You're not alone. Others, especially with early MacBooks, have reported slower Safari performance after updating to OS X 10.6.8. and Safari 5.1
Using any popular search engine with the terms "mac os x 10.6.8 slow internet" will reveal dozens of similar complaints.
I did too with my mid-2007 MacBook, similar to yours, except I have 4GB RAM (3 GB usable). After a few days of 'spinning beachball' I restored my system to OS X 10.6.7 and internet performance returned to what I remembered.

Having increasing difficulty with my safari.
Have to hit reload multiple, multiple times in order to get pages to load. Seems to be intermittant, as in it comes and goes, and only iPad is affected. (have checked internet connectivity with multiple other devices connecting to my router when iPad Safari problem occurs and no other device is having problem loading any type of site.). Altho prob is intermittant, i find I am running into it more and more, and wondering about any type of solution for the aggravation.
Have done the normal steps of clearing cache, restarting, etc. and other apps work blazingly fast.
It's just my safari.
Any ideas?Lots of images slow it down very much, and the pages don't load completely because lack of processing power and RAM.
Did you get iOS 4.3? Safari performance was increased dramatically.
You can try another browser like Terra, which is free from the app store. -
Safari is working for YouTube, but on other websites that have video content it gets choppy and very slow.
I tested my down load connection. It averages 2.3 Mbps. I'm using a 1 GHz G4 Powerbook with 768 MB Ram.
Firefox does the same thing as Safari.
Is there a better way to watch these video websites?
Jesse TylerRecent updates or changes I did not deliberately make to my old G4 have made Safari performance sluggish in all aspects. Safari 3.1.1, MacOS 10.4.11.
Scrolling with the mighty mouse hesitates.
All video clips, including native QT, stutters.
Even typing is sluggish, characters appears one or two keystrokes behind the keyboard activity. I cannot accurately select text in a field. Backspacing to delete text entry on a Web field takes several heartbeats for the cursor to move. It's weird.
Searching through the forum has led me to try several suggested cures but, since these issues are present only in Safari, my intuition tells me this is a problem with the application, not with Safari's caches or permissions or .plists. Deleting or purging those items did nothing to improve the performance.

Safari will not download images
Safari keeps comomg up with the box with a question mark in it. I cannot manually down load a lot of the images, pictures etc. I have Flip4Mac but I think that is only for playing Windows video files.
Hello Fraser:
We may not have the problem isolated. Are you connecting the computer that "works" in the same way that the one that "works" is connected?
There is nothing inherent in either Safari or OS X that I am aware of that would cause the problem you describe.
A general "fix" for some Safari performance problems (after clearing the cache) is to trash the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and restart (enter your personal Safari preferences). You might also trash the "favicon" file as that can slow Safari if it gets too large (~library>safari>icons).
I would also turn off all items in the Safari preferences under "autofill" and turn on all the web content boxes under "security."
