3.1.3 Software Update and Smart Playlists with Podcasts

I did the 3.1.3 update last night and now my smart playlist containing podcasts is gone.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
Any idea on a fix?
Thanks

For whatever it's worth, 3.1.3 appears to have fixed my problems with Smart Playlists...
In 3.1 and 3.1.2 I'd get the same contents of a Smart Playlist between iTunes and the iPhone, but a very different order.
e.g. I have my Podcasts smart playlist set to order by ascending publish date. A bit annoying because I wouldn't get them played back in chronological order on the iPhone, but only an annoyance.
Now since applying 3.1.3 - with no mods to filters or Live Updating I might add - they've back to showing the right order on the iPhone as well as on iTunes. Which is a relief. Long may it continue!
PS: I did also update iTunes to 9.0.3... I don't suppose this would help those on the list having troubles would it?

  • HT1801 Just wondering, does iTunes update my Smart playlist with new songs?

Does iTunes update my Smart playlist with new songs each time I download it or do I have to manually update it myself? If I do, can someone walk me through it. Thanks a bunch

    Yes that should work.
Are you using an "Artist is ..." rule? If so, and if new stuff by onerepublic isn't showing up in the list, check the Artist name on the new songs to make sure it's exactly matching the one in your rule.
For example, I've got music in my library (by the same people) under the artist names Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Godspeed You! Black Emperor ... (different position of the "!") If I set up a smart playlist based on:
Artist is Godspeed You Black Emperor!
It doesn't catch the songs with an Artist name of "Godspeed You! Black Emperor".
To get all the songs showing in a smart playlist, I'd need to adjust the Artist name on one or the other sets of songs so it matches a rule. (Haven't done that myself yet for GYBE, because I haven't worked out where the exclamation mark is actually supposed to go.)

  • 3.1.3 update and smart playlist problem

All the songs in the smart playlist are updated to the iphone, the playlist is shown where the iphone is listed under devices, but it is not listed under playlists on the phone. I've done a restore and sync (not from backup), edited the playlist and resync, deleted/recreated the smart playlist and resync. I've unchecked all playlists except just the one smart playlist and it just won't get the playlist name.

I have just run into same issue after installing the 3.1.3 update. Multiple smart playlists no longer sync to the iphone 3G, with the exception of one. Beyond that, my issue is exactly as bredmond's original post.

  • IOS update still did NOT fix the live updating to smart playlist on iPhone

I updated to the brand new iOS 4.1 today, and I am still having an issue that has made me upset for the past few months. For years and years I have been able to use smart playlists that have live updated on my iPods and iPhones without problems. Recently, within the past few months of software updates, my smart playlists have stopped live updating.
Here are two examples I'm talking about:
    1. I have a smart playlist of music that I call Unrated for iPhone. The smart playlists requirements are that it has no star rating and that it is limited to 500 MB. I used to be able to rate songs on my iPhone, and they would get removed from the playlist automatically within my iPhone without having to sync it with my desktop. Now, as I rate those songs on my iPhone, they stay on the unrated list.
    2. I have another playlist called 5*'s least recent. The requirements for this smart playlist are that the songs have 5 stars, and they are limited to the 75 least recently played songs. Songs used to be removed from that list once they were played. Now, they stay on that list until I sync my iPhone to my desktop.
What happened to live updating? Is anybody else experiencing this problem? I have loved this feature for years and now there is a bug! Has anybody brought up this topic before? Because I couldn't find any solutions.

FYI, I've found that Live Updating can SORT OF work. It seems if you only have two rules, live upating works (IE, I have one that is a Rating must be 3-5*'s and last played cannot be within the last 8 weeks). Once the song is played it disapears off the playlist. BUT, as soon as I try to add a third rule, it doesn't work anymore! This is unfortunate because two rules really limits the ability of the playlist...

  • Did Apple get rid of the Smart playlist for Podcasts in iOS 6

I can not figure out how to do a smart playlist consisting of Podcast with apples latest ios.  I had no problem making smart playlist with podcast when the podcast were included with the music app.

But I have at last found a fix that has worked for me, at least. I deleted the Podcasts app from my iPhone 4 (and from iTunes on my Mac), re-started my iPhone, and - Happy Days! - the unplayed podcast episodes I was looking for have returned to my smart playlist in the Music app, as they are in the iTunes smart playlist on my Mac.

  • Manually and quickly updating smart playlists with 'Live Updating' off?

    Hi,
I have a quite large music library (13,000 songs) and use a multitude of nested smart playlists that change often because I don't want to listen to the same song every day and I want to listen to good songs more often than bad songs. I'm also splitting up by genre, because not all my friends appreciate all of my musical tastes, and I myself am not always in the mood for every genre.
The consequence of this is that from time to time, iTunes stutters when playing a new song, presumably because it's updating all the smart playlists when the previous song ended.
Now, I had hoped that turning 'Live Updating' off would cause iTunes to update the smart playlists at startup instead of updating continuously. However, it turns out that though the performance improved dramatically, turning off 'Live Updating' caused the smart playlists to never update. Obviously I don't want that, since that means all my smart playlists are static.
Is there a way to have both good performance and easy updating of the playlists? There are a bit too many playlists to manually update very day by forcing iTunes to update the playlist.
An 'Update all smart playlists now' button or a 'Update all smart playlists at startup' feature would be nice...
    Any hints, tips, help, suggestions?
    Thank you so much.

Using the SDK, you (well, I) would do something like this:
    1. Get a list of all the playlists in the iTunes Library.
    2. For each playlist, test if playlist is a Smart playlist (Playlist->Smart() returns a boolean)
2a. If it is a smart playlist, select it by setting a property value for the BrowserWindow object (basically BrowserWindow->SelectedPlaylist(playlist object)) (for example perl code, see http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.perl.misc/browse_thread/thread/1248563d 743795d8/be1a88fc6eeab0e4?lnk=gst&q=itunesperlselectedplaylist&rnum=1#be1a88fc6eeab0e4)
2b. Using keystrokes (Alt-F,G), select "File..Get Info". Then keystroke Alt-U to toggle live updating, then Enter to click OK.
2c. Repeat above, which should toggle live updating off again. (unfortunately there is no way to be sure whether the starting state was off or on -- I'm assuming it will always be off)

  • Podcasts Playlist and Smart Playlists Problems

Whenever I connect my iPod to my PC and start iTunes, I see that both my Podcasts and Smart Playlists have all reverted to regular playlists. Even when I fix the problem by deleting it all and recreating the playlists, the next time I plug my iPod in and start iTunes the same thing happens. I've reinstalled iTunes and I have the most system update for my iPod. I also manually manage my Podcasts. Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

I've solved this problem by working through an unrelated problem. Try the solutions in these two articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
In particular, do all of the solutions involving uninstalling and reinstalling iPod software and iTunes. Also, clean up your temp files and iTunes installer files. Finally, try reinstalling the COM interface for the iPod service.
I suspect that following all of the various uninstall/reinstall directions fixed it, but the rest is worth trying. I'm not sure what did it, since I couldn't get iTunes to recognize my iPod but none of those solutions fixed that particular problem(I just had to remap the drive letter.) Any one of those things could have did it, really, since it worked great once I got it working again.
    Good luck!

  • How do you update smart playlists with live update turned off?

If I create a smart playlist in itunes and deselect live updating then how exactly does the smart playlist load up?
The reason I ask is that started setting up Smart Playlists for all of the artists on my computer and they're all set to live update which is consequently slowing down my itunes.  I realize that I may not necessarily need that. My question is though...how exactly would I go about manually updating a smart playlist that has live updating turned off?

Well, the problem is that I have smart playlists for every artist in my library (which is literally hundreds).  With every live update turned on, every time I edit tags for a new single or something it'll scan all the smart playlists for matches.  The reason I'd like to have smart playlists instead of regular playlists is that I tend to add a lot of singles, and, especially in the hip hop genre, they tend to have a lot of guest appearances so I'd like the smart playlists to do tehir job.....I'd just prefer to not have it set to live update so I can avoid delays during tagging.
Apparently this is a known side efffect of having many smart playlists in your itunes.  I realize my way of working with them might be slightly unconventional in comparison to how they are typically used but it's great for me.  If I could leave live update on without any performance degregation then I would but it seems I have to pick.
I read somewhere that if you shut down itunes and restart that it'll refresh all your smart playlists (if live update is turned off).

  • What the h*** happened to Live Updating of smart playlists in iT 11? I have several smart lists that pull from larger lists based on how recently a song has played. Not happening now. The whole library only updates "last played"

What the h*** happened to Live Updating of smart playlists in iT 11? I have several smart lists that pull from larger lists based on how recently a song has played. Not happening now. The whole library only updates "last played" for about 1 in 20 songs. This is really screwing up my lists that I use as backgrounds for a lot of activities in my classroom at school.

FYI, I've found that Live Updating can SORT OF work. It seems if you only have two rules, live upating works (IE, I have one that is a Rating must be 3-5*'s and last played cannot be within the last 8 weeks). • HT5381 i did a software update and now mail wont open at all

Help......my mail app is coming up with an error "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X".  Can I uninstall the update?

    !! WARNING !!
    about the September 2012
    "Security Update 2012-004"
If you've got "Mail.app" in a folder OTHER THAN the root "Applications" folder,
MOVE "MAIL.APP" TO THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER
    **BEFORE** INSTALLING THE "004" UPDATE!!
Because *IF* you use OSX's integrated Software Update app from the Apple menu to do the "004" updating, and *IF* your Mail.app is NOT in the Applications folder, then buddy, you've got some sitdown fixit time ahead of ya and/or some internet tie-up time downloading the "004" update file itself.
Been through it all, already.  In fact, just got done getting my Mail back up & running. And I tried everything short of attempting to unpacking my "Mail.pkg" receipt file using... whatever... even Pacifist couldn't get it out. So that fixit "Plan D" died quick. And I'm not savvy enough to use Terminal commands to do "Plan E," so that SUDO stuff was my brick wall.
So I compressed my entire "Mail" subdirectory that contain all my emails, for safekeeping during the required surgery, or whatever would work, leaving the original Mail directory where it was. In case something bad happened in all my fixit whatevers, the one thing I *didn't* want to cross paths with was a hosed Library -> Mail folder. Then I'd be pssd. But I can wipe out that ZIP now 'cause all's well now. After 6 hrs of downloading thru a mobile broadband hotspot running at only 14KB/sec speed due to my having gone over my T-Mobile hotspot plan's bandwidth amount (throttled-down after reaching the limit, tho not cut off completely. Kinda nice, but it's a huge speed drop).
I tried moving the two Mail.app versions around, compressing them & then trashing the original so they wouldn't be recognized, blabla, even booted my Mac in Safe Mode & reinstalled the "MacOSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) Update Combo.dmg" update file, which in the past has fixed many problems. But after restarting, not this one.
Like a dummy who ignored knowing better, I had my Mail.app in a folder other than the Applications folder, with only an alias to that being in the Applications folder. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. The updater don't see that as nuthin special or useful.
So if you've got, like I've got, "old" icons for Mail.app (v4.5) in your Finder toolbar & in your Dock that all point to "Mail.app v4.5" in whatever folder you've got that in, other than in the Applications folder (where Apple apparently REQUIRES that it be located, and ONLY there, at least for OSX updating purposes), then after you download & autorun that "004" updater using Software Update, NONE of your pre-existing Mail icons will work. And MOST aggravatingly, **NOR** will your brand-new "Mail.app v4.6" work that came out of the "004" updating installation.  So basically, your Mail.app's... all of 'em.... are hosed. But only if you run the "004" update without your "Mail.app v4.5" being located in your Applications folder and ONLY in your Applications folder. And duplicates of Mail.app, scattered around your HDD??  Always a problem with many Apple apps.... The Apple software engineers apparently like 'em to be in the Applications folder, and in ONLY there, and ONLY the latest version, and ONLY 1 single copy of each on your entire HDD. They just don't seem to stress that enough, it appears. Kind of an oversight for them to not emphasize that, IMO...
My recommendation for this particular September 2012 "004" update:
If you run Software Update, and if you see the "Security Update 2012-004" listed as available for download, UNCHECKMARK IT.  DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT USING SOFTWARE UPDATE !  Instead, download the actual update file itself.
Same thing, only a different way of doing it. Most importantly, you'll be skipping the auto-installation that Software Update performs.
AND you'll have that update file on your HDD for future fixits, should a nasty "unfixable" problem come up.
First, #1. Do a filename search for "Mail" (Option-Command-Spacebar). Scroll down to where the "Apps" are located in the list under the "Kind" column heading. First, find your Mail.app that's v4.5. Get that bugger into your Applications folder if it's not already there. Next, Trash all other "Mail.app" apps you see in that same list that you may have elsewhere on your HDD.
    #2. Go here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
And download the actual "004" DMG update file: "SecUpd2012-004.dmg"
And of course, it's a biggie.... 270MB... so watching grass grow may be involved here if you've got a slow connection (go to a MacDonalds & do it, like I shoulda done).
    3. After downloading, I'd recommend closing down all apps, emptying the Trash, and restarting.
Then, after restarting, run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions."
Then, doublecheck that the Mail.app version 4.5 is in your Applications folder.
THEN fire up & install "SecUpd2012-004.dmg."
    Reboot.
After the reboot, your Mail.app version 4.5 in the Applications folder will have become Mail.app version 4.6 in the Applications folder, and all will be well again.
And you can dump that zipped-up "Username -> Library -> Mail" folder then, too.

  • Software update and iLife help not working in Admin account

For the last few weeks (maybe since iLife 11 was installed) software update and iLife help has quit working on the single administration account on my iMac. All works fine on the secondary accounts.
If I try to use software update it says everything is up to date, even though I know there are updates available that can be seen if checking from a different account on the machine. In iLife, if I try to access the help files it tells me I need to download them. I click to download and after a few seconds it takes me back to the front help page and I then go through the entire process again but the help download never happens. On secondary accounts the help files work no problem.
I've tried many of the tips for deleting helpfile plists, but nothing seems to work for me.
Can any kind person list for me everything I should look to delete or move in the account to get these things working again?
    It would be much appreciated!

Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.
