3.1 erratic speeds & pauses on podcasts & audiobooks on original iphone

Is anyone else having this problem? I upgraded to 3.1 yesterday and when it was done I went back to listening to an audio book. The playback was so erratic that I gave up, deleted the book, downloaded it again and still had trouble. I was listening to some podcast while the audio book was downloading and they too will suddenly speed up and then pause for no reason.
This does seem to be more of a problem when I am moving around. If the iphone is sitting on a stable surface, it behaves better. Could the "shake" feature be causing any of this? I don't really want to downgrade.

I've the same problem. All playlists jumbled. Songs that don't feature in that playlist are included, as well as videos.
I have noted that, if you check out the playlists on the iPhone through iTunes: Devices>iPhone>Music or Playlist: it displays correctly, but the iPhone playlist shows something else. Also, the iPhone goes into "Updating Library ... this may take a few moments" when the iPod is selected. I've never seen that happen before this update.
I have tried reinstalling iTunes 9, the iPhone, syncing one playlist at a time. But no joy. Hope Apple find a fix soon.

  • Double Speed Audio on podcast and audiobook ios5

I'm getting double speed audio on podcast and audiobooks after upgrading to ios5. I restored my ipad but no luck! I have lectures and educational materials I listen to and it's driving me insane that I am unable to listen to it in a normal way. Any fix?

iPhone 3g you say? It might be having trouble playing an Audiobook at 2x. Mine seems to run at 2x.. How's your half speed? You should try give your phone a restart... it might free a bit of memory on the ram.

  • Podcast & Audiobook Playback Options on iPod Classic?

I recently got a new iPod Classic (7th Gen) as an anniversary gift, but I've been having trouble with how it handles Podcasts & Audiobooks - the iPod I used to have was a couple of generations older (I think 5th Gen?).  Basically the two biggest issues I have are:
    1. Podcasts - the older iPod used to play just a single episode, and then exit back to the main menu once the episode was over (unless I queued several episodes together in a playlist).  The new iPods treat podcasts like an album, and continue playing the next track.  This wouldn't be an issue, except that podcasts are sorted in newest -> oldest order, such that it will play Episode 13, then move on to the next track which is Episode 12, and I have to stop it, go back to the menu, and select Episode 14.  Is there any way to get the order to sort ascending (changing it in iTunes didn't appear to affect the order on the iPod at all)?  Or at least an option to play only one episode at a time and not automatically cycle through them?
    2. Audiobooks - I classified my audiobooks into various genres such as "Classics", "Fantasy", "SciFi", etc. in iTunes, and on the old iPod, these genres would show up under Music->Genres in the iPod menu (alongside Rock, Pop, etc.).  This appears to no longer be the case.  Similarly, audiobook authors no longer appear in the list of Artists and audiobook titles no longer show under Albums.  It appears the only way to access audiobooks now is through the
Music->Audiobooks menu?  And unfortunately it appears as though the Audiobooks menu only lists individual track names, and not Artist or Album?  To make matters worse, the track names are being sorted alphabetically and ignoring the Disc # & Track # metadata stored in iTunes.  Is there any way to fix any of this?
Any help would be appreciated!  I've poked around in the settings both on the iPod itself and in iTunes with the iPod connected, but I haven't found a way to correct any of these issues yet.

I've found a workaround for this problem: the Join Together v5.1 iTunes script from Doug's AppleScripts combine the segments into two large AAC files.
Now it's OK if the iPod stops playing segments after they finish because they're hours long instead of minutes.

  • Everytime I pause a podcast, it restarts

Anytime I am listening to a podcast on my desktop, if I pause the podcast it will restart at the beginning of the podcast. Additionally, if I try and click in the seek bar, it will fast forward about 2 seconds and stop. If I try to click and drag the bar in the seek area, when I release the mouse it will jump right back to the beginning.

I have the same problem.  Using iTunes 12.1.0.50 on an iMac running Yosemite

  • Erratic speeds since 80/20 - What is going on?!

Well I really can't make heads or tails of it boys and girls!  I know a lot of us have had our issues since the upgrade but I really don't know what to think of mine!  I probably shouldn't dwell on it but I can't help thinking that something is clearly wrong with my line.
In summary, when I was on 40/10 I was on the max IP Profile of 37.41 and literally every speed test taken via speedtest.net was as smooth as a babies bum, almost matching the profile.
Upon upgrading to 80/20, I was initially on the max IP Profile of 77.43 (although this dropped to 74.67 today following my first reboot of the OR modem since the upgrade) yet my speedtest.net results from day 1 have been all over the place!
I've probably had around half a dozen out of over 100 tests to hit the 74-75mb mark.  The rest have been fluctuating severely and not getting anywhere near that mark, not usually exceeding 55mb.  One minute I can take a test and get 55mb, the next will be 25mb, the next 37mb and so on and so forth.
I appreciate certain factors affect the tests like the amount of people taking it from the same server at the same time but what I can't understand is that no matter what time of the day or night I take a test and no matter what server it is taken from, I simply cannot get a consistent test!   Upon reading these forums, it seems a lot of people ARE getting consistent results, no matter what time of day or server so surely the blame can't be speedtest.net?
To try and look into matters further, I downloaded a game from Steam only 30 mins ago and the download speed was varying between 1.7MB/s - 5.7MB/s.  That suggests I'm clearly not getting anywhere near my IP Profile but it's the variation that's more of a concern!
SO! You'll be pleased to know that my concerns are nothing to do with me not getting 70 or 80mb, even though my IP Profile suggests I really should be getting close to 70mb if not more (which is clearly possible given I have hit 74-75mb as mentioned). What I am concerned about is the variation in the speeds of the tests taken to date (including the Steam download).  As mentioned above, my speeds on 40/10 were so consistent but on 80/20 it's like a rollercoaster ride.  Sometimes the tests take far longer than they should, almost coming to a standstill, because the speed dial can't decide which way to go!
So could this be conclusive evidence that I do have a fault on my line or am I talking nonsense?!
    Any adice would be appreciated!

Although there is alot of consistency on the forum, there are a good few people on these forums having the same issues as yourself.
When did you upgrade?? The 10 day stabilisation period still needs to be taken into account even though you are getting erratic speeds.
If this continues i would recommend contacting the mods and go from there.
I totally agree and am fully aware that there are plenty of people having the same issues Aarong.  And that's my point! The upgrade from 40/10 to 80/20 was a simple case of BT switching everyone on to the new profile so why are so many people experienceing issues now when some people, whilst in the minority, have had no troubles whatsoever?
There has got to be more to this than just speed testers playing up?!
Btw: I received the upgrade on the very first morning it went live so am over 8 days into the stabalisation period and theres not been any stability yet!!!

  • What are some good free podcasts/audiobooks?

Does anyone know where to get some good free podcasts/audiobooks?

99% of podcasts are free and available through iTunes. There are podcast available for just about any topic under the sun. Do a web search for anything that interests you adding podcast to the search terms and I'm sure you'll find something that interests you.
A lot of public radio broadcasters such as CBC, NPR and PRI have their shows available as podcasts. I like This American Life, Not Necessarily The Opra (not music) and Radiolab to name a few. For Tech related shows you can't beat anything by Leo Laporte on his TWIT network or the offerings at CNet.
If you can't find your favorite show in iTunes Store you can still subscribe to it using the option in iTunes Advance menu.
For Audiobooks, not free, but you can't beat a subscription to Audible.com.

  • Transferring protected WMA audiobooks to iTunes/iPhone using OverDrive Media Console

    Hi there,
My local library is now offering audiobooks. I have downloaded one, that went fine - I have the file and can listen to it. The problem is that I can't seem to transfer the WMA Audiobook to my iPhone using this software they provided (OverDrive Media Console), even though their website says that it can be transferred to apple devices (including my iPhone) and the library site says that this particular audiobook is permitted to be transferred to apple devices (including the iPhone).
When I try to Transfer using the OverDrive Media Console, I get this error:
"The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard is not able to connect to iTunes. If you intend to transfer content to the iTunes Library and/or a supported Apple device, please note that iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer) is required. iTunes is available as a free download from Apple; visit http://www.apple.com/itunes/download to download iTunes. If your system meets this requirement, please close any open iTunes dialog boxes then attempt to transfer again."
I have read that others have had the problem, but there are few solutions emerging, from what I can see anyway.
I have went to this website (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite) in my Internet Explorer browser and upgraded the Windows Media Player security version. OverDrive says my security upgrade version is 2.9.0.1.
My iTunes is up to date as far as I know. iTunes 10.4.0.80. Perhaps the recent update is something to do with this problem? I don't know. I am using Windows 7, and the OverDrive Media Console version is 3.2.0.5.
I have changed my iPhone settings to "Manually manage music and videos", as OverDrive requests this.
When I try to put these protected WMA Audiobook files into my Automatically Add to iTunes folder, I get an error message saying:
"One or more of the songs being added are in the protected WMA format, including the song "examplesongname01.wma", and could not be converted.
iTunes can only convert unprotected WMA songs. If you have the original CDs for these songs, you can import them using iTunes."
I have restarted iTunes, OverDrive Media Console, and my computer countless times. My home network sharing is turned off; I mention it as I saw someone had suggested that as a solution.
The two suggested solutions I haven't tried yet are:
    - convert them to MP3
    - uninstall and reinstall iTunes & OverDrive Media Console again.
I don't really want to uninstall iTunes. I have a lot of music and audiobooks; it takes half aday for iTunes to load them all up again. As for converting to MP3s; I don't know if this is legal. Plus, I don't know if these protected DRM files can be converted like that.
Ok, well I hope someone else was in the same boat & solved it. Otherwise it'd be a real shame if we couldn't get these protected WMA audiobooks onto our iPhones.
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks.

Once you have downloaded the audiobook to Overdrive Media (OMC), you need to connect the Apple device to which you wish to transfer the ebook, then use the transfer button on OMC.  That converts it to an mp3 file.  The ebook cannot be transferred to iTunes.  iTunes is simply the medium used in the transfer to an Apple device.  The tutorial below covers all the specifics.
Many libraries worldwide now use Overdrive Media Console, which comes in Mac an Windows versions http://www.overdrive.com/Software/omc .  Some find the mobile device transfer process confusing.  To load or delete a WMA or MP3 (Macs can only download MP3 books) audiobook onto an Apple mobile device see the "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" video in the guides at Step 7, then do the following.
    1. For Windows versions, you must first do a security update of Windows Media Player (even though you won't be using it) using Internet Explorer at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite .
    2.  Open iTunes, plug the mobile device into the computer USB port and open the Overdrive Media Console.
    3. Highlight the mobile device in the left hand menu of iTunes and insure the "Manually manage music and videos" box is checked in the Summary Tab. If the mobile device storage is full, transfering will delete that portion of music necessary for the ebook.
    4. Highlight the book you want to transfer in the Overdrive Media Console and click the Transfer Button.   A window opens permitting you to click the boxes for parts of the book you wish to transfer.
    5. After the book has been transfered, when you click the disclosure triangle (arrow) to the left of the iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes, MP3 books will show up under the Music subsection and WMA books will show up in the Books subsection.  Once the mobile device is disconnected from iTunes, MP3 books will show up in the Songs list of the mobile device and WMA books will show up in the Books list.
    6. To remove a book from a mobile device plug the device into the USB port and open iTunes. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes so that you can see the device’s subcontents. For an MP3 book select the Music subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.  For a WMA book, select the Book subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.
    7. The Overdrive Media Console Guided Tour (videos) is at http://www.overdrive.com/Solutions/Libraries/tour/MenuWelcome.html .  The "Portable Devices" and "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" videos are there.
    8. To find a nearby library for ebooks search http://search.overdrive.com .  You can download the software, search for books and see tutorials without an account at the website of any library that uses Overdrive, however, you need a library card to download books.  At this library site, for example, the software and guided tour are at the bottom of the left hand menu.

  • How do I remove an audiobook from my iphone?

How do I remove or delete an audiobook from my iphone 4s?

I have the same issue, I purchased an audiobook through iTunes on my phone.  When I sync my phone, the book is not checked to be synced.  When I try and swipe to delete, the button does not appear.  I can swipe to delete music, but not audiobooks.  Is this inherent in the iOS?

  • I bought an audiobook on my iPhone and I can't find it.

I purchased an audiobook from my iPhone 5c. I couldn't find it in iBooks, or Music or anyplace else. The only place that I can play it, is when I attach my iPhone to my iMac and view what is on my phone in iTunes. I can then play the audiobook. I bought the audiobook so that I could listen to it on trips, so having to be in front of my computer won't work for me.
I ended up buying the book version also, just in case I can't get this resolved. I'm also tempted to rebuy it via iTunes on the iMac and THEN sync it up with my iPhone and iPad.
I've checked Sync Audiobooks in iTunes but it doesn't show up there.
In iTunes I've gone to File -> Devices -> Transfer Purchases but to no avail.
In iTunes I've clicked on Store -> Check for Available Downloads and it's still not appearing anyplace except on the iPhone IN iTunes.
I've restarted iTunes, the iPhone and the iMac and still no change.
I've gone through the forums and have tried just about every suggestion that was given, which helped those others, but I haven't gotten there yet.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download. If it's not on your computer's iTunes (it will be in the Books part of your library if it is) nor on a backup then you will need to copy it from your 4S to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11) and you can then sync it to your iPhone 5

  • I have a podcast 'stuck' on my iPhone 4

I have a podcast 'stuck' on my iPhone 4. The podcast in question encountered an error when downloading.
I can't remove this by sliding to delete on the iPhone itself (when I swipe nothing happens), or by syncing / removing via iTunes.
When I view Settings > General > Usage > Music on the iPhone the podcast does not appear there either to allow me to delete it. Is there any other way that I can remove this rogue podcast without resetting to factory settings?
    Many thanks.
    Robbie

    hook up to itunes
locate your device in the sidebar, hit the triangle for the dropdown menu
click on podcasts (under your device name)
find the rogue podcast on the screen
    click it and hit delete.
    this should delete it manually

  • HT5295 Does anyone else have an issue with the way iTunes fails to properly sync a podcast downloaded to an iPhone or iPad when connected to iTunes later?

When I download a podcast directly to my iPhone or iPad and listen to it I expect it to reflect that status when I come home. Instead the podcast downloads again in iTunes and then wonderful joy it changes the status to unplayed and I wind up having to figure out what I've listened to and what I haven't (I listen to a lot of 'em).

I'm not having issues.  What have you done to troubleshoot?
