3.1 Software Update for 1st gen

I'm currently running 2.2 on a 1st gen iPod Touch. Never upgraded to 3.0, which was $9.95. Now 3.1 is available for $4.95. Can I go from 2.2 to 3.1 directly? Also, Apple store says 3.1 is for 2nd gen. Will it run on 1st gen also?

"Now 3.1 is available for $4.95. Can I go from 2.2 to 3.1 directly? "
Yes. You can only go to the latest software. There is no option to upgrade to past software.
"Also, Apple store says 3.1 is for 2nd gen. Will it run on 1st gen also?"
Where does it say that? I see this nowhere. 3.1 is for ALL ipod touches.

  • Getting error 5002 when trying to purchase software update for 1st gen iPod Touch

The iPod Touch currently has iOS 2.2.1. I am trying to purchase the iOS 3.1 update by following the link on this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2052
Upon signing in and agreeing to the terms of service I recieve error 5002. I have restored the iPod and the error still occurs. I have tried purchasing the update on multiple Apple accounts and on multiple computers, both Mac and PC with no success.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Try this artilce.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297
    It says:
This alert is often the result of an issue with verifying your billing.
    Quit iTunes.
    Open iTunes.
    Test the issue.
If it persists, sign in to store.apple.com using your iTunes account
    Click on Change account information
Modify or remove your credit card information.
    Click Continue.
    Test the issue.
It could be related to the errors than some users are seeing today and yesterday about checking billing address.

  • Will there be a software update for 7th gen

Is Apple planning to kill the iPod? Release an iPod 8th gen? Or any new software with features? (Not sure if you can give any of this info)

We are all users here like yourself. There won't be any new firmware with features and you will just have to wait and see if Apple is going to update the Nano or Shuffle (the Classic is already gone).

  • Is Wifi issue fixed with the 3.1 update for 1st Gen Touch?

I have a 1G Touch and I have been reluctant to upgrade to 3.0 because of the issues people seem to be having with wifi once they upgrade.
My wifi on 2.2.1 is fine, and I don't want to mess it up...but more and more apps require 3.0.
I'd like to know whether people are finding that the wifi issues are finally resolved with the 3.1 update...or not.
    Opinions?

I upgraded to 3.0 as soon as I got my iPod Touch, so have always had the wifi problems. My home wifi works fine, though slowish. My broadband is a pretty consistent 5.9Mb/s. With 3.0 I was getting under 2.0Mb/s. With 3.1.1 I get between 2.0Mb/s and 3Mb/s (once I got 3.9Mb/s, but only once). I notice from the tests that the meter surges quickly up to about 5Mb/s before dropping like a stone to 2.4Mb/s or 2.8Mb/s. I would be happy for this to be improved but it doesn't really bother me.
But with Public wifi, it's a different story. I get everything from logging on immediately and working perfectly to not working at all. When I can log on to Public wifi, I notice two things. First, it's pretty well certain to fail with secure pages. Second, if it fails to connect the first time, stopping and restarting it will often produce a result. These are classic signs of DNS problems, as I recall from previous Mac upgrades.
I love the iPod, but I would love it even more if the wifi worked the way it's supposed to.

because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled.

  • I purchased the newest software update for my ipod touch 1st generation and it is saying it is it will now begin download but the status bar doesn't even appear? How can I start the download?

I purchased the newest software update for my ipod touch 1st generation and it is saying it is it will now begin download but the status bar doesn't even appear? How can I start the download?

Well first off you shouldn't have had to pay for a download (just an assumption from the word "purchased".
If you are trying to install iOS 5 on your iPod touch, it won't work they arent compatible. I suggest checking what version of software you are trying to install and posting it in this forum so people can have a better understanding.

  • Software update for the iPod Nano 6th Gen

Is there gonna be any software update for the iPod Nano 6th Gen for video playback??

Re: Software update for the iPod Nano 6th Gen
There is already new hardware for the nano (7th Generation) and it would take a hardware modification to put video on the 6th Generation Nano so no speculation was needed, Carl had the correct answer.
My Original iPod Nano received updates beyond it's generation, there is no reason to conclude this would not be possible for other models and generations. Why would the iPod Nano 6G need a hardware modification for video playback? It already can do analog composite video output for viewing slideshows with music and transitions on a TV and can handle full photo resolutions. The iPod Nano 6G seems more than capable from a hardware perspective of video playback, it's just that the screen is tiny small for viewing video realistically for any length of time with comfort. That can be rectified by using the onboard TV out feature, though battery life might be miserable. It has nothing to do with the release of the iPod Nano 7G.

  • HT4623 how do I update my 1st gen ipod software? I'm unable to download new apps.

How do I update my 1st gen ipod touch software? I'm unable to downlod new apps?

I do not understand how to update the ipod touch. On my iphone 4 you can go under settings and then software and check your software and then update if needed. This ipod 1st gen does not have this under settings. I'm trying to update the software so that it can down load more current apps.

  • I want to update my 1st gen iphone (with 1.1.1) software

I want to update my 1st gen iphone (with 1.1.1) software to the latest version but newer versions of itunes wont recognise it and older versions of itunes wont connect to the update server. How can I do it?

To add to templeton advice, you need at least 3.5 GB free space to update directly from iPhone.
And don't forget to make a backup at home before you proceed.

Hello, I hope by now you have resolved the upgrade issue, but if not, here is what I ended up having to do:
“SUCCESS!!! I took my iPod to a friend who is a computer programmer/genius. He turned off his wireless, hooked the ethernet cable directly into his computer, and the download went through without a hitch. YAY!”
Here is my original post explaining what I had already tried:
    “Hi all,
I got an iPod Touch 1st gen for my youngest son for Christmas as a starter. It has the 2.1.2 ios on it, but after I paid for the upgrade to 3.1.1, I keep getting an error message (8288) saying there was a problem with the network connection. I have called customer service, and they suggested I try on a different computer, and if that didn't work, try connecting to a different network, and then trying the update. None of this has worked. It seems that tech support is clueless with this issue.
I have installed and unistalled iTunes 10.5, 10.3, 10.4, and now I am back with 10.5. I have tried looking up the issue from several search engines but no one seems to have a universal solution and I have tried several.
I really want to have this thing updated for himw hwne he opens it, but I am starting to worry that my purchase was a bust. I know this is the oldest version, but I don't want to buy a newer, more expensive iPod and him still not be mature enough to really take care of it. As I said, this one is a starter.
    Can anyone help? Please?!
    Thank you!!!
P.S. We have a PC, with Windows XP Home.”
Now, there seem to be a lot of different ways to solve the 8288 error, none of which are universal. Best of luck getting yours upgraded!

P.S. The post by Sparkhi is a link to his blog going into a long story about how he wanted Apple to pay him for “solving” the issue….the one that apparently has been solved by multiple solutions. I’m not trying to bash, it just bothers me that he put up this whole story and finally, at the very end of his blog post, posts his solution.
