3.1 -- Unresponsive iPhone?

I did the 3.1 update around noon today, and since then I've had my phone become unresponsive 4-5 times.
Basically, it will sleep (or I'll lock it), and then that's it, it won't respond to any input or display anything. Home and sleep buttons don't work, silence, etc.. The only thing that works is to hold down home and sleep for 10 seconds and hard reboot it. Also odd is that it still seems to be doing... something. I can call the phone and it behaves as if it's ringing, not as if it's turned off.
Anyone else seen this or have any ideas on how to fix it? Just now did the restore from backup, so hopefully that takes care of it....

OK, So I have had a similar problem since I installed the 3.1 update yesterday. My iPhone, which has a fully-charged battery, will randomly shut down by itself. The screen goes totally black, and it doesn't respond or even appear in iTunes when I plug it into the computer. The only way to get it back on is to hold both buttons down for 20-30 seconds and then the apple logo appears and it reboots. Anyone know why this is happening?

  • Itunes unresponsive iphone 5

Itunes hangs when connecting my iphone 5 and I followed the troubleshooting guide but the guide stops if this issue still continues.  I highlighted the step below in red and hoping someone can redirect me to further troubleshooting steps.  Still haven't solved my problem:
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    Symptoms
In rare instances, iTunes may become unresponsive when connecting an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to your computer. iTunes may become responsive again after you disconnect the device from the computer.
    Resolution
Expand All Sections | Collapse All Sections
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue:
Install any available software updates for your computer.
For Mac OS X: Click the Apple () menu, choose Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions.
For Windows: Refer to the documentation for your computer for instructions on using Windows Update to update your computer.
Update iTunes to the latest version.
For Mac OS X: Click the Apple () menu, choose Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also download iTunes from the Apple website.
For Windows: Use Apple Software Update, or download iTunes from the Apple website.
    Test with automatic syncing disabled.
For Mac OS X: Click the iTunes menu and choose Preferences. Click the Devices tab and place a check next to option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically." Click OK.
For Windows: Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Click the Devices tab and place a check next to option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically." Click OK.
Reconnect your device and test to see if the issue still occurs. If your device is recognized successfully, you may be able to isolate which type of data is causing the issue. Do this by deselecting all syncing options under each of the syncing tabs and then sync. After that, re-enable your sync options one at a time until the issue returns.
Note: If the issue only occurs when syncing data from the Info tab is enabled (For example: Contact, Calendar, Mail account or Bookmark syncing), reset the Sync History (for Mac OS X instructions see this article, for Windows see this article).
Check your device for podcasts. If there are any podcasts, manually delete all podcast episodes from the device by sliding your finger across the podcast episode's name and tapping Delete. Once all podcasts are removed from your device, reconnect it to the computer, open iTunes, and test.
If possible, test to see if connecting your device to a different computer with the latest version of iTunes installed resolves the issue.
    Test with iTunes plug-ins removed.
    Quit iTunes.
Navigate to the following folder, based on your operating system:
    Windows XP:  C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins
    Windows Vista or Windows 7:  C:\Users\[username]\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins
    Mac OS X:
~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins   (The "~" represents your Home folder)
    /Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
If any files are in this folder, move them to the Desktop temporarily.
Open iTunes and test to see if the issue is resolved. If so, you may leave these iTunes plug-ins removed. If you wish to re-use these iTunes plug-ins, consult the vendor for the iTunes plug-ins to see if any updates are available.
If the issue also occurs on a different computer:
If the issue does not occur on a different computer, or no other computer is available to try:
It can be useful to determine if the issue affects a specific computer user account or all accounts.
Follow the steps below for your operating system to create a new user account to test.Windows XP
    Windows Vista or Windows 7
    Mac OS X
If the issue still occurs in a new user:
If the issue does not occur in a new user:
Test with an alternate iTunes Library.
Log out of the new user and log back in to the original user.
Create a new iTunes library by following steps in this article.
Connect the device to see if the issue still occurs.
If the issue does not occur with a new blank iTunes library, quit iTunes and switch back to the original library as follows:
Windows: Reopen iTunes while holding down the Shift key. When prompted, click Choose Library. Navigate to and select the original iTunes library file. By default, the iTunes Library files are stored in the following locations:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    Windows Vista: C:\users\[username]\Music\iTunes
    Windows 7: C:\users\[username]\My Music\iTunes
Mac OS X: Reopen iTunes while holding down the Option key. When prompted, click Choose Library. Navigate to and select the original iTunes library file. By default, the iTunes Library files are stored in~/Music/iTunes.
Then, rebuild the original iTunes library files by following this article.
Above in red, it states that if the issue does "not" occur.  But after creating a new library, the problem still persists but the article ends there and doesn't provide instruction if the problem still persists.  I don't want to rebuild my library just to learn that this wasn't the problem in the first place.

Exactly the same concern i have, and im scared that 4 months later no one seemed to have noticed? Apple? Anyone?

  • Completely unresponsive iPhone 3g, decides to work 8 hours later

So I have seen a lot of posts on people's 3g shutting down, but I have yet to find this exact behavior elsewhere although it happened to both my wife's and my iPhone.
I took my phone off the charging cradle (with full charge) last night, made a phone call, locked it and put it in my pocket. 10 min later, I was going to make another call and the phone was completely unresponsive. It would not even respond to a hard reset. I plugged it into my MacBookPro and the computer did not even recognize it and the phone would not charge, anything. I had a busy night so I set the phone aside and got back to it several hours later. When I did the phone was still unresponsive and it was warm as if it had been in heavy use. I then plugged it into the computer again and went to bed. Shortly after I woke up this morning (8 hours later) the phone turned on, completely dead and began charging. The phone now seems fine.
So if you have the behavior above, put it on the sync cradle and walk away for 12 hours or so and it might come back. This has happened once before to my wife's iPhone and as yet we have gotten no response from Apple as to what might be causing it. Right after my phone died I scheduled a call from Apple for this afternoon so if I get any solutions or information I'll post it here later today.

It was suggested to me that this may help you. I hope that it does!
Personally I'd do a 'reset' - it's something that's worth doing whenever you see anything 'unusual', 'unexpected' or 'unexplained', and although there are other 'deeper' remedies (such as 'restore' and 'restore as new', and DFU), a simple 'reset' (done every month or so too) seems to help to keep our iPhones healthy, even when 'Other' memory usage gets high or when there are poorly-developed Apps causing 'issues'.
I hope that it is not a distraction and helps with your problem.
    Good luck!

  • Unresponsive iphone 4 screen?

I received my iphone 4 in the post 2 days ago. I have had constant problems with the screen becoming unresponsive. It seems to work most of the day, however sometimes it will just freeze up and the touchscreen will be un-responsive. The manual buttons on the phone still function, just not the touch. I have tried re-setting the phone. This doesn't appear to do anything and the phone can sometimes be unresponsive for up to an hour. Any ideas or fixes?
    Cheers!

It doesn't appear that anyone has posted to this thread in quite some time. However, I am having and have had this issue for quite some time now. My iPhone 4 (4.3.5) touch screen freezes periodically and actually pretty frequently. Theres really no rhyme or reason to when or why it does it and I don't recall ever having this issue before upgrading to the latest iOS update.
Most of the time what I am able to reslove the issue (temporary) is pressing the power button. On occasion I have shut the phone all of the way down and restarted it.
Here are the issues that I am expereincing:
Call finished and unable to end call on touchscreen
Incoming call touchscreen will be unresponsive and unable to answer
During call have another call come in and touchscreen will be unresponsive, cannot ignore, answer other caller...nothing
Press the home button to wake the phone and the slide to unlock will not slide
Press app icon (any app) and the icon idicates that I have pressed it however, the phone does not respond and the app does not open.
I took my phone into the apple store and they ran diagnostics on it and could not find any issues other than a few dropped calls. The "Genius" that was assiting me told me that my iOS must be corrupted and that we needed to do a complete restore. So, thats what we did and I left the store. I'm not sure exactly how long it took for it to start happening again but it wasn't long. In fact I'm not sure that restoring it did anything at all.
So...I'm not sure what is causing this and I don't know what to do about the issue now. I pre-purchased my iPhone 4 when they came out and have had it since then (out of 1yr warranty and did not purchase applecare).
I do wonder if I could possibly have a "bad" app installed on my phone that is causing this to happen.
Any ideas or suggestions would be very helpful...I am really frustrated at this point.

  • PLEASE HELP!! UNRESPONSIVE IPHONE

After turning off my iPhone 3G, and turning it back on a hour later, it won't clear past the boot screen, which has the apple logo. It also won't take me to my login screen to enter in the password. It's unresponsive.

Long shot but...  try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    If still a problem, Restore.

  • Unresponsive iPhone 5

After upgrading to iOS7 my iPhone 5 has been going black and is unresponsive unless I force a restart by holding the home and lock buttons together.
Anyone else had this problem? Worth taking into the Apple shop or is it likely to be fixed in an update?

    Hi Geo,
The reason why the update might not be pushing to your phone automatically is because of sheer volume.  If you think about it, when a new operating system comes out, think about how many people in the world have iPhones.  Apple has to essentially "push" those updates to everyone.  This is strenuous process on their servers and the cell phone providers alike.  You may have to just wait a bit but going through iTunes might speed up the process as you can request an update and be further up in the queue than most.  Hope this helps and good luck.  Let me know if you have any additional questions.

  • Unresponsive iphone starts up when chargeing but itunes will not pick up iphone

iphone is unresponsive but when i plug it into the wall charger it comes on saying it needs to be restored but when i plug the iphone into the laptop it isnt comming on or pickin up the iphone so therefor can not restore anyone any ideas

Clean the dock port very carefully with isopropyll alcohol, especially the pins, which are on top of the midrib. Be very thorough and firm but do not break anything. Let it dry for half a minute at least. Connect to computer, if nothing, clean again.

  • HT201263 Frozen and unresponsive iPhone 4.

After 2 months my iPhone died. It is frozen and unresponsive .  When I connected it to MacBook, I didn't see neither "Connect to iTunes" screen according to suggestions, no the device  appears in iTunes.

    Hi Laiurb,
Have you tried a reset on your phone? Hold down the Home key and the Power button at the top at the same time and continue to hold both of them down until the Silver Apple appears (ignore the red slider). Once it comes back up, see if your issues are fixed.
    Cheers,

  • Unresponsive iPhone Screen

    Hi,
Is there any way I can backup my iPhone without entering my password or is it possible to enter it using an external device?
I'm happy replacing the phone however I've made the stupid mistake of not backing it up in a while and don't want to loose the data. As my screen has become unresponsive I cannot sync it to my computer as it my requires me to enter my password before I can back it up.
    Thanks!
    D

No, if you mean the phone passcode used to unlock it.The only way to enter the passcode is via the screen.  If it wasn't backed up, you will lose data (but nothing will get loose in the phone).
Did you try resetting the phone (no data loss)?  Press both the home and power buttons for up to 1 minute, releasing when the Apple logo appears.

  • Unresponsive Iphone 4s

Yesterday my phone was next to dead when I got home and put it on the charger. After about 20 minutes i check the phone and it showed that it was connected to a power source but the screen still showed no battery power. I left it on the charger overnight and this morning it still showed the same battery level. I took it to work with me and it stayed working all day, but it died just before I got home.
Now when I plug it in, it shows that it is connected to a power source but it will not turn on. I have tried to reset it with no luck. It will not show up in iTunes. I want to be clear on this: the phone would not have lasted all day texting, streaming music, and making phone calls if it were dead this morning. My thought is the phone is not properly reading the battery level and now that the phone powered itself down, it refuses to boot because it does not believe it has the appropriate amount of charge in the battery.
Are there any thoughts of how I can correct this problem? Again I have tried to let the phone charge for about an hour before attempting to reset. I held the two buttons for almost a minute before giving up. I also tried to hold the home button white connecting to the computer to see if i could get it to connect to iTunes with no luck.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello BrenG,
Thank you for providing all the information about the issues you are experiencing with your iPhone not charging. I would be concerned too .  I found some steps that address issues similar to what you are experiencing.  You can skip any of the steps you have already taken, but I think steps 5 and 6 are particularly useful for the issue you are experiencing:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Black and unresponsive iPhone screen (vibrates twice at the same time)

Hi, I dropped my iphone on the ground and after I had picked it up the screen turned black and it started to vibrate when I plugged it in the charger. The phone was hot and would not cool down.
I have tried to hold the home button and the on/off button at the same time but it does not work. Please if anyone can help me and tell me what to do, I would appreciate it.

You physically damaged the phone when it was dropped.  The only solution is relpacement or repair.  Take it to Appel or an Apple authorized service provider.

  • Locked up, unrecognised and unresponsive iphone

My (new to me, second hand)iPhone is a 2G and was working perfectly until I connected it to iTunes to synch with what was previously on my iPod. Itunes said there was an upgrade available and I agreed. The phone was upgraded and since has locked up.
When I switch on a figure of a man with a speech bubble (in Cyrillc) saying MPEBEA.
If I hold down the sleep and start buttons it clears. If I then press the sleep button a picture of a pineapple with a bite out of it appears, then it returns to the man.
Neither ITunes or my computer recognise it when connected.
    Any help most appreciated

Sounds like your phone was jailbroken. I would return it to whoever gave it to you. If you paid, get a refund.

  • Completely unresponsive iPhone!

I need some help. Recently my iPhone 3g was freezing with a loading circle so I went to a phone shop and got it sorted, but I plugged my iPhone onto the computer and I don't know what happened but now it's completely black. It won't turn on or reset via sleep/wake button and home button (my sleep/wake button is a bit broken so that's awkward but I've tried so many times so I think it just doesn't work) and if i plug it into the computer, it doesn't even locate it... If anyone can suggest anything to make it better, that would be much appreciated! Thanks!

sounds like the "phone shop" did a number on your phone.  You've now voided any remaining warranty on the phone, as well as your ability to purchase an out of warranty exchange.
Bring your phone back to the "phone shop"

  • Unresponsive iPhone 5 keyboard?

This could possibly be me just trying to pick out other problems with my shiny iPhone 5 rather than just the completely and utterly atrocious wifi... but has anyone else noticed their keyboard to be a bit sluggish? I've noticed I can't seem to type as fast as I could on my 4s. It tends to miss keystrokes unless I slow it down. I grabbed my roommates 4s and typed as fast as I could - no problem. Then I grabbed my 5 again and had the same issue - "quick" (I say quick... by no means am I the quickest with touchscreen keyboards) typing causes me to miss several letters, but this was not the case on a 4s. Has anyone else noticed this? Or could I just be a tad bit too picky?

I kind of have the same problem. i have an iphone 5 with iOS6. Problems with the keyboard is like such - i can hit the space bar, it lights up, but it doesnt space. I switched off the "double space for period", it was better, but didnt stop its occurance completely.
Sometimes, i hit the space bar, it lights up, but the letter N gets hit instead.often when i hit the key board, the key lights up but the letter doesnt appear, or another letter appears instead?
am i the only one???? i'm really dreading going in to the store to queue, and then having to PROVE there is a problem just to get it changed...
another problem encountered, though not related to the topic, is that the phone resets if i'm chatting heavily on imessage. this problem happened on my iphone 4, after upgrading to ios6, and i also see the same problem on my iphone 5.
