3.1 Volume Control Strangeness

After docking/undocking my Touch the volume is turned all the way down. This happens even when iTunes isn't running. If I dock the touch w/ the volume control displayed, the volume control disappears for a second and then reappears and it's just a fraction above off. When I undocked it the volume control auto-adjusts to off.
Has anyone else had this happen?

I did further troubleshooting and isolated the problem to the iPod's interaction with the dock itself. When I use the cable without the dock the volume doesn't reset. The dock is the last generation (came out about the time of the 5th gen iPod classic). I have a brand new dock that I will try next.
I also found that turning off, then back on the keyboard clicks in the settings makes them audible again. If the new dock doesn't fix the issue it will be very annoying to have to reset the volume and keyboard click every time. Simply not using the dock would work, but is an unacceptable workaround.

  • Volume controls on my Apple BT Keyboard do not control volume on my Mac Mini

I just updated the OS on my Mac Mini to Yosemite and everything was working fine, but earlier today the volume control buttons on my Apple BT Keyboard stopped controlling the volume on my Mac Mini. I was watching a movie just last night and the keyboard controlled the volume just fine. So the keyboard WAS working fine for a few hours after I installed Yosemite.
When I press the volume buttons I get the screen display for sound and instead of the up and down volume that I usually get when repeatedly pressing the volume button I get a zero with a line through it. The same thing happens when I press the mute/unmute button so the computer is not muted. And it's not an issue with the F key settings in preferences because the volume buttons DO get a response and display on the screen, but the volume doesn't change and, as I said, instead of the up/down scale I get the zero with a line through it.
I can change the volume using the mouse and sliding the volume slider in ITunes up or down, but that's the only way. Also, strangely, the volume icon in the Apple bar at the top of my screen is grayed out. When I click on it, the slider shows volume all the way up and it's grayed out. And if I click and drag to try and change that slider, it doesn't respond.
Basically, it appears that the keyboard is, in some ways, not compatible with the computer. I'm typing with the keyboard now, and all the other buttons work except for the volume up/down/mute buttons. Even the change track, play/pause buttons work just fine. So it's not specific to the music controls. And again, I DO get that display for volume when I press volume up/down/mute with the zero and line through it.
I've owned Macs for over 10 years and this is the first time I've seen this. Very, very strange so any help possible is appreciated.

  • Volume control buttons not working with new usb keyboard

    Hi all,
I recently replaced the bluetooth keyboard that came with my iMac with the usb keyboard (the long aluminium one, with the number block). Typing is no problem, but the volume control keys dont seem to work with this keyboard as I was used to with the bluetooth keyboard: max vol, increase/decrease and vol. off dont operate with any of the keys (f, alt, str, cmd, shift). Only thing I can do is get a view of the running programs or make the current application vanish from the screen.
Tried to change the keyboard setting in preferences for the F1-12 keys - made no change.
    help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks

I was able to fix this bug by upgrading to OS X 10.6.8.
Very strange that a) it was a problem in the first place and b) that the upgrade did not happen automatically
Thanks very much to Haggibbor, who alerted me to that possibility. Since I read this in a thread I did not open myself, I unfortunately do not know how to let him have the 10 points I would like him to receive. (Hints for this newbie are very welcome.)

  • Volume Control Issue (Satellite L505D-S5983)

    My laptop: Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983
    So here's the issue:
Just recently I've started having problems using my volume control located next to the SD card reader slot.. You know, the volume 'slider'. It's been acting rather strangely, when I try to adjust my volume it doesn't change at all from the current volume percentage that it's at... Even when I'm sliding the slider. So then, I have to go into the manual volume in my hidden icons menu to change the volume. However, after I go through this step, I am then able to use my volume 'slider' control, and it actually works.
    So, I'd like to know:
    A) Why this is happening?
    B) Am I able to fix this issue?
    C) How would I fix this issue?

  • Keyboard Volume Controls working erratically

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a strange issue with the mac keyboard volume controls. I have the system set to output both sound and sound effects to some external speakers via the line-out (set in System Prefs). Whenever I reboot my MacPro, the volume control keys stop working with the line-out and revert to controlling the built-in speaker. However, iTunes etc still output via the line-out.
If I try and reset the values in the System preferences, OS X switches the outputs around, but stubbornly leaves the volume keys controlling the internal speaker. If I switch to another User ID, then eveything works fine.
The volume keys had been working fine with the line out and external speakers until this morning...nothing new installed! So i'm puzzled as to why the sudden change! The only thing that was done differently before the shudown was to run the daily/weekly/monthly jobs, but they shouldn't have messed anything up.
I've tried the following 'fixes' which I've found in the forums, but without any permanent success:
    1) Check Software Update - all up to date.
    2) Reset PRAM - no effect at all.
    3) Reset SMC - no effect at all.
    4) Hold down power button until power light flashes - no effect at all.
    5) Verify permissions - no effect at all.
    6) Deleting the ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.BezelServices.plist file then logging out/rebooting. This resolves the issue until I reboot the Mac..then back to square one again. When I check the non-working bezelservices.plist against the one for the working User ID, there is no difference.
Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this irritating bug - it's almost as bad as having a windows PC back again ?

I've been using SoundSource for a while now because I was having similar problems:
    http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
I often switch between internal speaker, line out and imic depending on the time of day and what I'm listening to/watching.
SoundSource doesn't completely fix the problem but it does make it easier for switching outputs. I've found that if the kb controls get stuck on one output, I just switch the output in SoundSource to something else and then back to the preferred one and everything works again. Only takes a few seconds...

  • Sound volume control unresponsive after waking from sleep

Lately, a strange problem has developed on my MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008), running Mac OS X 10.6.4:
After waking the MacBook from sleep, the sound volume control keys on the keyboard does not affect the volume control of:
    * Neither the sound volume output by the built-in speakers,
    * nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the menubar,
    * nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences,
Only the sound volume slider/indicator in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences has an effect on the actual volume ouput by the built-in speakers.
First I thought the problem was affected by disconnecting a set of analog headphones while the MacBook was sleeping -- it seemed that after sleep the volume control keys on the keyboard and menubar item still was set to affect the headphone port and not the built-in speakers.
However, the problem just occured after sleeping without anything connected to the MacBook. The built-in speakers were muted, when the MacBook lid was closed, and the computer went to sleep - after waking from sleep the built-in speakers were unmuted - and control was only possible through System Preferences.
    Any ideas?

Not sure if you stumbled on the other threads like this one:

I've been having the same problem on my Mac Pro for a while, finally decided to see if there were some other people having the problem. I'll see if the others have a solution yet.
One workaround I've been doing is to go to Preferences -> Sound and select a different output device. For me, I have to flick to Internal Speakers and then back to Line Out.

  • [GOT AROUND] No more volume control in lxpanel

    Hello
I'm using Arch Linux with lxde and openbox, installed on USB pen (it's a persistent install, not a live one). My filesystem is ext4.
Since last filesystem update (following the home page of the wiki) the 'Volume Control' button of lxpanel is disabled, although the sound still works as it always did. If I right-click on it, in order to parametrize it, I get this message:
Error, you need to install an application to configure the sound (pavucontol, alsamixer ...)
The point is that alsamixer IS installed, and I can use it to increase/decrease the volume.
I tried to remove/re-install alsamixer: no change. I also killed lxpanel and restarted it from the command line, in order to check if I received some more enlightening error message: I got nothing.
    Any hint?

    Hello Lone_Wolf
Thank you for your reply. I removed lxpanel and installed fbpanel instead. Bad luck! The volume control of fbpanel doesn't work either, and moreover it prevents fbpanel from starting.
    $ fbpanel &
(fbpanel:1312): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme directory of theme Azenis Icons has no size field
    volume: can't open /dev/mixer
    fbpanel: can't start plugin volume

The point is that /dev/mixer doesn't exists. I have seen a bug report on this problem, which is open since... 2010-11-28! Well, I suppose that reporting a bug on lxpanel and being patient is probably the only thing to do. I'm going to close the subject.
Nevertheless it is strange that it occured to me with lxpanel only recently. Strange also that I'm the only Arch user experienceing this problem. Would it be possible that other users don't experience it because for some reason they do have /dev/mixer file? May I solve it by creating a link /dev/mixer pointing to some other sound related device? Advices welcome...

  • Titanium Dolby Digital - Windows Volume Controls Not Function

I am extremely happy with the Titanium because it finally elminated the 4GB Snap-Crackle-Pop issues I've been having since I owned this motherboard.
However, I've noticed that when I enabled Dolby Digital encoding over an optical output the master windows volume controls and muting do not affect the audio output at all.
Using the master windows volume controls with the analog or unencoded digital optical outputs work fine. It is only when using Dolby Digital encoding that I see this strange behavior. In-game and application-level volume controls & muting work fine; it is only the master windows volume controls that are 'ignored' when using Dolby Digital.
I'm still happy to see Dolby Digital encoding on this card, and very pleased that I'm using 4GB now without crackling in games or during music, but hopefully this Dolby Digital issue can be fixed.
Have any other users observed this odd Dolby Digital behavior?

Unfortunately (for me) the two of you are correct and windows volume controls have no effect in Vista.
Auzentech has this on their FAQ:
Q : After installing the sound card and connecting it to my surround sound system using S/PDIF output, keyboard and Control Panel adjustments to Volume and Balance either do not work or have minimal affect. Is that normal
A : With Digital Audio output, output levels are controlled by the wave volume settings. Multimedia keyboards and remote controls only adjust the master volume. The third-party application "Volume Tracker" corrects the situation by linking wave volume and master volume. Volume Tracker is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Windows Media Center.
    I also found this article:
"Another direct consequence of transmitting a compressed audio signal instead of an uncompressed audio signal (more commonly known as PCM) is that the volume of that signal cannot be modified once it has been encoded. Because the bits in an encoded signal no longer directly correspond to the volume of that signal, it is impossible to increase the volume until it is decoded. This explains why your PC cannot control the volume of your sound when you are using Dolby Digital or DTS as the output. The connected device will be the only place where the volume can be changed."
    http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archi've/2008/03/04/using-s-pdif-to-send-audio-from-your-pc.aspx
So it would seem that this behavior is not only intended, but apparently unchangeable in Vista. In XP there is a utility (Volume Tracker) that can fix this, reportedly. This utility has no effect in Vista.

  • IPhone 3GS - volume controls working but actual volume stays the same

    Hi
My iPhone 3GS has been exhibiting a strange phenomenon for the last couple of days. The volume in my heaphones is fixed. I can use the volume control buttons or the on screen slider just fine, they're responsive in terms of animation (the buttons show the increasing/decreasing number of white squares and the slider allows me to move the dot and the blue line extends accordingly), but the actual volume only changes when I'm using the speaker, but not when I'm using the headphones. The only actual volume control I have using the headphones is sliding the volume down to zero, which also produces a loud click in the headphones.
The issue is system-wide and as such affects all apps, including Spotify, iPod, VLC, various games and other music/video apps.
The headphones in question are brand new and work fine with other equipment. I've also tried with other headphones, with no change.
Any help would be appreciated. And yes, I've restarted the phone. I've contemplated reset/restore, but I wanted to check if anyone knows of a less time-consuming solution.
    Thanks

    No, that's not it.
The volume is not locked using the Volume limit, and even if it were, that wouldn't explain why it's fixed at one (rather loud) level. The volume limit function is just there to limit the upper bounds, not set it to a constant level.
    Thanks for your reply, though!

  • Option to disable iTunes volume control for remote speakers?

I have noticed that with iTunes 10, the option to disable the volume control for remote speakers seems to have disappeared from Preferences>Devices. If you click the "?" button, the help window gives an explanation of what its for but the option to check/uncheck it clearly isn't there. Since iTunes 10, streaming my music from my iMac to my Denon receiver via Airtunes/Airplay with an Airport Express has been disappointing. The volume is far too low. With version 9 and every version prior, the volume control option was always there in preferences and I always had it disabled; music came through loud and clear but since this option appears to no longer exist, the volume through the Denon receiver fails to impress, even with the iTunes volume slider at max.
Anyone else noticed steaming volume too low? If so, agree that it's a bug?
Message was edited by: Brian I.

I wholeheartedly agree with "I also used to disable the volume control to reduce the amount that my computer interferes with the sound before it gets to the external DAC." There is no reason why Apple shouldn't restore this important setting option as the volume control does negatively affect sound quality in a high-end set-up and we'd rather not just take their word for it that the volume control's maximum setting is the same as disabling it. Why does the volume slider change the output level even when using the Airport Express' digital output? It shouldn't, and it seems the sound is now being force sent through a stupid digital volume control for no good reason. If for no other reason the "disable" option should be restored to avoid inadvertent volume changes via the Remote app for iPod Touch and iPhone. Strangely as compared to several other posts here, my perceived volume level now seems louder than before, not softer as others are reporting. People that are serious about sound quality do not want iTunes or AirPlay (formerly AirTunes) to manipulate the volume level or any other aspect of the sound at all ever, as it can't help but only hurt. I also thought the "disable" setting was available in the Airport Utility previously, but it's vanished from there too.

  • Re: Sattelite M305D-S4830 Volume Dial Strange Behavior

Hello, I am having a strange issue with my volume control dial on the Satellite M305D-S4830. I am not sure when this error began happening, but now my volume control dial produces the letters C and B when I roll it clockwise/counterclockwise. here, I'll roll it cw/c-cw right now:
    ccccccccccccbccccccccccccccccccccbbccccc
It produces the b's less often than the c's as you can see. Also, it does adjust volume bar but erratically: when I roll it clockwise it decreases the volume and then sharply increases the volume immediately. Rotating it counter-clockwise does increase the volume sharply and sometimes it decreases the volume a little bit.
I have the latest drivers for my Satellite and have not altered the OS or Services (such as HID Input service) in any way. I have tried using a previous driver version for the sound but this has not changed anything. Thanks for your time.

    Hi
Someone had a similar issue. I read about this here in one of threads (if you want use the search option).
The point is that the technician has cleaned the volume wheel (contacts, etc...) and this solves this issue.
I dont know if this is a same reason in your case but its worth a try
Note; dont disassemble the notebook or similar!!! This can be done ONLY by ASP due to some hardware damage and warranty validity!
PS: Of course the BIOS update is advisable too.

  • Volume control doesn't work

Had 2 kernel panics recently, and been noticing a string of strange issues, one of which is that the Volume control doesn't work, or specifically, it doesn't affect many applications.
For example, when using Chrome, if I want to use the volume control to icrease or decrease volume on a movie (YouTube etc), the hardware controller keys (F10 - F12) do not have any affect on volume, but I am able to change it using the software interface of the current player.
Something has gone haywire with my laptop... disks are unmounting as well (USB & FireWire 800), major settings seem to have returned to default (trackpad and other), and installed software seems to have disappeared (eg, Paragon NTFS). I am concerned!
    Help, please!
    I am still using 10.6.8.
    Peter

I am having the exact same problem. I just did a complete re-install of max os x and did all of the updates..my hard drive had crashed so i had to replace it. lot's of fun.. and after the last upgrade i can't use my sound at all.. the sound shows that it's all the way up but it has the "no Smoking" sign as well..
i have tried to restart.. change options and whatever else i could .. i did notice that when i enable the option to show the sound icon on the main bar that there is just a blank spot where it should be.. and i can't change it form there either because it just doesn't show..
any one seen this before.. ?
all my other Mac's work fine..
    please help..

    Hello.
I rotate the button that controls the volume and i realise that it doesnt follow me!!
I increase the volume and it decreases it and with strange irregular way (very shortly)...
I decrease the volume and even it does it or it does nothing!!!
Can someone help me with that??

What notebook model do you have?
Ive got a U400 and Ive got the same volume control.
I read here in the forum about very similar issue and the guy solved this by cleaning the contacts.
There was a dirt and dust which affected the volume control functionality.
The volume control level jumped around.
I dont know how he did this but I think a compressed air spray should help you.

  • Unable to use volume control ipod itouch 5.1.1

    hello,
itouch didn't have a problem with volume slider until recently. through other websites, i have since located the volume slider in music playing mode by double tapping the home button and scrolling to the left but it lacks any button to scroll to increase the volume. music plays well via a sound dock but that has it's own volume controls. sometimes when docking it plays through the handset speakers until seated correctly so i know the internal speakers do work.
any light on the matter would be very much appreciated!!!

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.
