  • PSU combined power

I read somewhere in this  forum a formula for calculating  combined power of psu.I was looking for that thread but i can not find it.So if someone know the formula please post it.
    Thanx

Arioch is right that resistance is hard to calculate.  So all you need to do is simplify the equation.
P is power measured in watts.
I is current measured in amps
R is resistance measured in ohms.
V is electrical potential measured in volts.
    So...  P = I^2 * R (eq 1) and V = I * R (eq 2)
    Solve (eq 2) for current and you get  I = V / R (eq 3)
Plug (eq 3) into (eq 1) and you get:
    P = I * V
now you have power (watts) in terms of voltage and amps.  Both of these are written on the side of you power supply.
There is still some debate about how much power you need from the 3.3V and 5V lines of your PS.  I'm running an MSI Ti4400 with Nforce and AthlonXP 1700 with no problems.  My 320W PS is only rated for 160W max on 3.3V + 5V combined.

  • Not enough power...?

    My problem is as follows:
    Win 2k (Tried WinXP aswell)
    CPU: AMD 900MHz
    Mobo: Abit KT7A
    MSI Gf4Ti4200
    PSU: 300W
Various "high-end" games tend to crash my system, usually re-boots but sometimes only to desktop. I know that some games are buggy but this happens with all new games(except IL-2, dont know why).
The combined power of 3.3V and 5V is 180W on my PSU.
I've read that for this card it should be 200W.
Is the reason for these crashes my "weak" PSU. The PSU is Herolchi Electronis  HEC-300LR-PT model. Max A for 3.3V is 20A and for 5V 30A.
These problems first appeared ~3 months back on a VERY hot day when all of a sudden my cpu crashed. At that time I had a Gainward Geforce4MX420 Golden Edition card. The Mobo refused to start with this card in. Changed the card to a old 12Mb card i had (AGP aswell) and cpu worked. Took the Gf4Mx420 card to the retail where they checked it and noticed that it worked in 4 out of 8 machines...Weird...
Bought this MSI card. All is well, except crashes ~every 3 minutes into games. Older games work well, especially 2D types like Jagged Alliance 2, Combat Mission etc. As well no probs when cpu on whole day, surfing etc...
Do you think that my problems are in my PSU? Something is weird with my Mobo aswell. I cant update the bios by flashing it. Get an errormessage "Not all spare parts listed" or similar when flashing it (correctly in DOS-mode).
Which one do you guys think is the probem? Mobo or PSU?
Dont have a lot of extra cash so dont wanna go and spend 100's of € on this...
    BR, Jussi

Thanks for the tip Bas, but I dont think that is the problem here... The temp on my system is low, both system and cpu temp way below 50C... The fan and the heatsink are both new on the cpu, shouldnt be anything wrong with them...
I've actually noticed the following problem with my computer lately: When I start/restart quite often the Mobo wont find my DVD-drive(finds my cd-burner every time) out of my IDE-drives.
Do you think the psu doesnt give enough power at startup to the DVD-drive and it fails to recognize on the mobo???
    VERY irritating ?(

  • Z68A-GD65 Power Consumption

Need technical information about power consumption of motherboard on 3,3V line. I have the suspicion that it is absent, because I did not find on board any converter from this line. My PSU caused regular reboot, because 3,3V line no load and the coil has overheated and lost magnetic properties. In theory, magnetic stabilizer must not used with no load.

Quote from: NovJoe on 01-September-11, 10:09:06
    What PSU are you using?
If I'm not wrong, the +3.3v and +5v shares a common source of power, which is why you usually see a combined power for +3.3v & +5v. There should be a load balancer within the circuitry system of the PSU to control this.
I use Thermaltake Toughpower 600W. In him implemented independent stabilization for 3,3V and 5V line with magnetic stabilizer. Underutilization these lines leads to abnormal situation and in some cases protection activation by overheating or overvoltages. Photo board under control transistor:

  • Suspected power suply problem

I am running an xp 2400+ on a km2m-l mobo. My PSU is only 145W (came with pc I bought 3 years ago).
I have been having problems getting the pc to start first time. I have to let it go to xp login screen, turn it off at blue screen of death then restart it to get it working right.
Now I can't even see the bios boot screen - the monitor doesn't even turn itself on from standby until xp login screen appears. When I turn it on it seems like the monitor isn't recieving anything at all, it only comes on quite a while into the login.
Is this definitely a problem caused by PSU? I have a new 400W PSU due to be delivered on Thursday and want to know if this should sort the problem, or if it is maybe the monitor (3 years old as well) that is knackered!
Any help would be great! Cheers!

Oops, 145W? Wouldn't even be enough as combined power...
You need about 20A/3.3V, 30A/5V and 180W combined power (AMD-suggestion), but I think even these specs are very low.
More than 25A/3.3V, 35A/5V, 18A/12V and 200W combined power should do the work for the rearest future.

  • Which power supply ???

    well i need ur help
i need a power supply , i've already checked on sparkle 400 watt , enermax 430 watt and antec true 480 watt
but the combined power of the +3.3v +5v is about 220~235 watts which is good, i suppose, but the prices range from 72 $ ~100$ ...i found aother brand called RAIDMAX and powmax 450 watt or 520 watt the price is about 60 $ but i failed to get any technical info about them ..
the question is are they good enough or not ,, and how much combined power of +3.3v and +5v do they supply ??
please help me  ... if anyone knows anything about these brands or any other brands which costs less than 70 $ please tell me ,,, thanks for ur help ,,,

thats why you get an Antec Truepower PSU  :D

  • Ever-Power brand PSU

    Hi.
I'm using a 300W PSU produced by Ever Power. Although I'm perfectly aware that it's just one of those low quality & dirt cheap PSU's, I'd like to know if other people are using some of those, and if they had any good or bad experiences related to this PSU. The PSU has 30A on 5V and 14A on 3.3V, combined 131W. Do you think that I could install a GF4 Ti 4200 without any power related problems ? My config is as below:
    MSI KT3 Ultra (non ARU)
    Athlon XP 1800+  (oc'd 148 x 11.5 = 1702 MHz)
    Leadtek GF3 Ti200 (230/530)
    Quantum Fireball Plus LM 20GB
    LG 52 CD ROM drive
    LG 4x4x24 rewriter
    Sb Live! Value
    Winmodem, unknown brand
    1.44 Floppy drive
    Thanks for reading.
PS: It seems I miscalculated the combined power, I had to edit the post.

Wonkanoby is right. The AGP cards pull from the 3.3v( 5.v also but don't quote me on it as I don't build AGP cards :D   ). First off, 14amps on the 3.3v is too low for the CPU even. I wouldn't run anything less than 20amps on the 3.3v as the CPU only pulls from this source. If you add the new geforce4 ti cards into the system, then you should have 28amps minimum on the 3.3v.
Most good power supplies are 36+amps on the 5v and 28+amps on the 3.3v --- (5v*36a) + (3.3v*28a) = 270+watts combined. I'm running 290watts combined on my Antec 400watt PS. The Antec 330watt TRUE POWER retails for about $69 on your local store ( less on newegg.com ) and does 270watt combined. Here is an example of a crap power supply sold under the compusa brand name. The 500watt PS is 5v@50a, 3.3v@14 = 296watts combined but is not enough to power a socket A T-bird or XP chip let alone a GF4 ti card. If you look at AMD's listing of AMD certified power supplies, you'll see each model has at least 20amps on the 3.3v. Conclusion: cheap power supplies acheive high total watts by increasing the 5v and/or 12v to rediculess values which are not needed as much  - especially the 12v.
FYI -   The 1800+ XP CPU requires 68+watts under a max load. I think http://www.tomshardware.com and amd.com still have a listing of the watts each CPU needs under max load.

  • Cisco 6500 power supply and module (hot-swappable?)

    Hi everyone!
We have currently a Cisco 6500 with 2 power supply of 3000w. We want to replace these PS for 2 new ones, which have higher wattage: 6000w.
Can we replace them without needing to turn the 6500 off?. I mean, What happens if we insert a 6000w PS and the switch is working with one 3000w PS?
Is it possible to do this replacement "on hot"?
And second, we also have a ws-x6708-10g-3c module. Can we insert this module "on hot"? Without needing to turn the Catalyst 6500 off?
Thanks a lot! and looking forward to an answer.

    Hi,
I've been having this problem for quite a while now during 3d games.

    Gigabyte GA7VRXP
    AMD Athlon 2000+
    MSI Geforce4 Ti4400

    Who made it?
On it there should be a label with some numbers. on that label there should be the correct numbers for the 3.3V line and the 5V line(celarly stated on the label). There should also be a combined power statement on that very same label. The 3.3V and the 5V are measured in amps.

  • Will the new mac mini work with the older Flat panel iMac globe speakers?

I am thinking it might be time to upgrade my 800mhz FP 17", and since i have an extra 22" monitor laying around being unused, i thought the Mac mini would be a drop in replacement...but then i thought about the imac FP speakers and i would like to keep using them...is anyone using these speakers with the mac mini?

The Apple 'Pro speakers' that were designed by Apple and Harman Kardon, use a proprietary 2.5mm mini jack connector and they would need an adapter to work.
Years ago there was a product called the 'iFire' that allowed those speakers to be used with other macs with a firewire port ..... Here's a site that I found that has more information than you'll need to know about the speakers and the adapter: http://maczealots.com/reviews/ifire/
At the time, the pro speakers technology was pretty cool ... combining power and digital audio into the one cable. I still think they look striking....
I did a bit of snooping around and couldn't find the adapter for sale (aside from a used one on Amazon for $199 ouch) .... I believe it has been discontinued.
I think you'll have to follow another route.....

  • Updating to 10.4.6-complaint

In an attempt to update my G4 iBook from 10.4.2 to 10.4.6, I turned on the download last night and expected it to be finished this AM. After 12 hours and 49 min. being online (dialup), this is the message I got.
"The update Mac X Update Combined Power PC can't be installed.
    A networking error has occurred.
Error NSUKLE Error Domain -1005 (-1005)
Make sure you can connect to the internet and try again."
What!!!! Another 12 hours 49 min. again for nothing? What's wrong with this picture? I used the software update from the Apple icon in the menu bar at the top. Like always. I'm still connected to the net. I haven't shut it off since 9PM last night. I don't understand this "make sure you are connected..." when I am connected.
I think Apple should have updates on CD available for those of us who can't download. They used to give out versions of OS8. Unfortunately I have to use dialup because that's all my area in the country has.
So how do I get the update, or so I just get along any old way?
    G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi, Anne.
Apple hasn't released an update on CD in some time. When they did, if memory serves, the CDs were $19.95 plus tax. I suggest you submit a Mac OS X Feedback concerning making Tiger updates available on CD.
    Based on the following:
"The update Mac X Update Combined Power PC can't be installed."
It looks like you tried to download the full Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update from the Downloads page. True? Or did you try using Software Update?
The 10.4.6 Combo Update for PPC is 140 MB, quite large for dial-up. Your dial-up connection probably dropped during the process or your ISP may limit the size of your downloads.
You could try downloading the individual "delta" updates, e.g. 10.4.3, 10.4.4, etc. though the 10.4.3 delta update is 97 MB, still a bit challenging for dial-up. I have links to all of the individual delta updates in my "Mac OS X Standalone Updates" FAQ, or you can find them individually by searching Downloads. For 10.4.6, be sure to select the PPC version.
Here are some ideas for obtaining large updates if you do not have broadband or your ISP restricts the size of your downloads:
    • If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, visit them and bring a CD-R or CD-RW disc with you — or buy a pack there — and they'll let you download and burn the required Delta or Combo Update there in the store. All the stores have broadband.
    • If you're not near an Apple Retail Store, perhaps a sympathetic local Apple Authorized Service facility with broadband would do the same.
    • If you have a friend who is using Mac OS X and has broadband, work with them to download the required Delta or Combo Update and burn it to CD.
Once you have a CD with the Update, copy the Update to your desktop and run it. It cannot be run from the CD.
Note that some of the information above is from page 477 of the "Software Update" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.
    Good luck!

  • Connecting an Apple 17" LCD Display to my PowerBook

    Hello
I'm a complete novice at displays and I need some very basic advice!
I'm thinking of getting an Apple 17" LCD Display off eBay. I know I need a connector/adapter and these seem to be also available on eBay although they do seem to vary from about £4 to £30! Do I need other connectors - say for power? What are the combined power connectors I've seen? I want to link it to my 550 Powerbook Titanium.
Is there a specific connector I need? What do I need to look out for? Is there a reason why they vary in price? Is/was there an Apple part number I can look out for?
Also, can I use the same connector to link up a non Apple display?
What do people think about Formac flat panels?
    Any thoughts on what's best?
    Thanks Russ

Hi, Russ. The Apple Studio Display 17" LCD (with a
clear acrylic case) connects to a Mac through its ADC
port, which is designed to feed video data, USB, and
power to the display through a single cable. Your
550MHz Tibook has a VGA-out port, which does not
supply power to a connected display, nor does it
supply USB to enable the USB port(s) on the display.
Apple's system requirements for the Studio Display
include an ADC or DVI port on the computer driving
the display. Your Powerbook model has neither, so I
suspect it can't drive the Studio Display at all.
    http://support.apple.com/specs/displays/AppleStudioD
    isplay17LCD.html
All other LCD displays I've ever seen offered for
less than $2000 are distant runners-up to Apple's
LCDs in image quality. I don't recall whether I've
ever seen a Formac LCD, but I would expect it to be
comparable to the general run of the low-end LCD
marketplace, i.e., cheaper than Apple's offerings and
    far inferior to them.
When actual selling prices for identical items on
Ebay vary widely, it generally reflects limited
demand, variable supply, and differences in patience
from one buyer to another. Someone who feels a need
to "buy it now" will gladly pay a premium; someone
who can take it or leave it this time and is happy to
wait for a better deal next time an identical item
comes up won't pay anywhere near as much.
Thanks eww. But can I get an adapter which plugs into my vga port and converts to dvi? As I said in my post, I'm a no-hoper on all this stuff but I'm sure I've seen somewhere that Powerbooks like mine can display through an external monitor.
I mentioned the 17" Apple display because I (like you) think they are the best. I'm not too bothered about the extra USB on the screen but what you say about power also is a problem Can I get a power supply as well as a connecting adapter?
PS - I was also hoping to be ale to use the Apple display to give me a better view when using my G3 iMac DVSE but it looks that's a gonner too!!
