3.3GB of "Other" in my Capacity Chart

I have 3.37GB of "Other" in my capacity chart. Any idea what this is and why there is so much of it?

Good morning, Dave,
A couple questions:
1. What does the entire capacity chart look like in iTunes? Did you get it into a situation where everything was listed as "other"?
2. What is the size of your other categories in your capacity chart?
3. Are you using your iPhone with a Mac or Windows machine? Are you moving it between multiple machines or just one?
4. When you look on your iPhone in Settings -> General -> About, what are the sizes of the categories there?
5. Does all your music and video play properly on your iPhone?
6. Did you ever take a phone call while the iPhone was tethered via a USB cable to the computer?

  • How can I delete over 3GB of "other" data?

So my iPhone 5 is a 16GB (or 13.3GB I believe, thanks apple) and it says I've used 3.37GB of this mysterious "other" data.
I have been going through and reading other people's responces to similar questions, and it seems like the main conclusion is to back up my iPhone, either to iCloud or my computer, and restore it as new. I've been trying to do everything but this, because I don't want to lose the data like my contacts and notes, but I cannot back up my phone because I have used too much space to back up, and I'm not going to buy extra space just to back up my phone to delete this data. Clearly one of Apple's problems they have yet to fix, unless they are doing this to make you buy more space and they can get more money. Regardless, we all get over that flaw in their products.
Another popular responce I was getting was to go to Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies and Data and proceeding through with that. Of course, wanting to get my "other" data back down to the regular amount (under 1GB) I did clear the cookies and data, as well as cleared my history (which is right above the Clear Cookies and Data option), however I am still stuck with over 3GB of other.
In responce to almost all of these posts was something about your apps. I have three apps on my phone, and I had deleted them off my phone to try and free up space. Honestly, I don't even think I got half of a GB back from deleting the apps. I understand that my phone is now made up of photos and corrupt files. But how do these corrupt files even get created? If I can somehow stop them from being created in the future, believe me, I will do so.
I have gone and deleted my text messages and emails, since people say that the space is taken up mostly by SMS and MMS messaging, and I think that got me almost 1GB of space. I did this last night, before I plugged my phone into the computer and checked the "other" amount on iTunes. Is there an alternative to restoring my phone as new to delete this data? Can someone please tell me if there is, because I'm just getting fed up with having to constantly delete things off of my phone to open up more space.

You should be importing pictures from the camera roll to your computer on a regular basis. Even if you don't want to keep them, at the end of the import, most photo managers give you the option to delete the photos from the camera.
If you're using a PC running Windows, just plug the phone in. Open Windows Explorer. You should see the phone there, and under that, the DCIM folder where the photos are stored.
Transfer them if you want to keep them or just delete them.
There is no easy way to mass delete them on the phone itself.

What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do I manage it?

The "other" is mainly corrupt files and files that did not get deleted by apps one the app was done with the file. Normally the other s less than 0.25 GB.  To reduce the size of other, usually a restore to factory defaults/new iPodis required.  Sometimes restoring from backup helps a little.

  • Why do I have 4.3gb of other

My iPod says it has 4.3gb of other and it's bothering me

An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" included corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • 3GB of "other" so I can't download iOS7

    Hi,
    I have an 8GB iPhone 4.
After taking off all my photos, deleting a good majority of my apps, and deleting all my texts, calls, voicemails, emails, Safari cache/cookies/history etc. I still have about 3GB of "other" on my phone. When I plug my phone into iTunes it says I have 0.8 GB of apps and 3GB of other and that's it.
I want to download iOS7 but my phone says I need 3.7GB to do that and I have 2.5GB available.
I was told by someone to go into settings>general>reset> erase all content and settings.
If I do this will I be able to download iOS7? And will I be able to restore my apps/contacts?
    Please help.
    Thank you so much.
P.S. I have also tried downloading iOS7 through iTunes and it didn't work there either.

    OTHER DATA
Other data on your device should only be about 1.5GB and larger than this may indicate corrupt data.

To get rid of it you need to restore not from a backup.

  • Cleaning Out "Other" in the Capacity Bar

I'vre here that the "Other" in the Capacity Bar in Itunes contains e-mails, calendar appointments, etc.  Is there a way to clrean this out and get some of
the memory back?  I donm't store e-mails, but I notice that calendar appointments from last year are still in the calendar.  Any advice would be appreciated.

A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • 3GB of "Other" Category

I have been having problems with my other category.  I don't really know what it is, but I have cleared all data from safari, I have no notes, no messages, only 150 or so contacts (that's really nothing), no pictures, no music, and 1.68 gb of apps on my phone.
(I took off all the media to see if I could fix the problem)
    I have 3gb of "Other"
From here, I saved my phone to backup and did a restore, after restoring I'm still back at 3gb of Other with 1.68gb of app data and I honestly just have no idea anymore.  I've tried every single solution and I cannot fix or even get this to go down.  I would start from perfect scratch but I don't know how to save the list of contacts because I don't want to lose those numbers.
    Any ideas?

    Around a gig is normal.
Also, if you tend to send/receive a lost of MMS messages, that will cause other to increase.  Especially if you keep those messages.
