3.5" Firewire external case
Hello,
I'm looking for an external firewire enclosure case.
I have an hd and I need 3.5". It should be small, and slim.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
The enclosures for 3.5" drives are not going to be very small, or very thin due to the size of the drive itself. If you get a drive with an external power supply, it will be smaller and quieter.
I like the enclosures from OWC found HERE since they feature the reliable Oxford 911 chipset. The more common and cheaper Prolific chipset should be avoided as it is not as reliable for Macs.

Want to use a Firewire external drive as my boot drive, few questions thoug
I have an old second gen ppc mini. My hard drive just died. It's been on it's last legs for months, but today it finally stopped booting totally. Ran a hardware test and the drive is bad.
Instead of having to open it, I'd rather just buy an external firewire drive. The prices are easily comparable to an internal anyway. That brings up a few questions.
1. From research on the apple discussions and just good old google, I'm finding it's mostly viable to use an external drive as a boot device, anything I should know?
2. From what I remember, when OS X is installed, the installer asks for drive to install OS to. If I select the firewire drive will it then remember that drive as the boot device, after the install is finished? I don't want to have to select it each time the machine reboots.
3. What happens with the bad internal hard drive? Can it just stay there? Since it's bad will it interfere with the mini operation? I'd rather not have to open the case.
4. Anything special about the external drive that I need to know? I found this one on buy.com...
http://www.buy.com/prod/fd-titanium-ii-firewire-usb-2-0-hard-drive-320gb-7200rpm -ieee-1394a/q/loc/101/203405880.html
Any problem with that one?
I guess if there's anything I'm not thinking of, please let me know.
Thanks...If I were going to use an external hard drive, I would buy the case from http://www.macsales.com (one example is http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/ ) then buy a hard drive and put it in. The hard drive, depending on manufacturer, will have either a 3 year or 5 year (Seagate is the only one warrantied for 5 years) warranty, unlike the prepackaged units that have a 1 year warranty. Also, if you can get an external case which uses any of the Oxford chipsets, they work well with our macs. Also, some people like the ministack for mac mini usage: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
You can define in system preferences, in startup disk, which hard drive you want the system to boot from. -
Time Machine backup with firewire external drive
I am having issues with a brand new firewire external drive and I am not sure if it is a drive issue, a configuration issue or what.
I have a 6tb Firewire hooked up to my machine. This is the drive which is being used as the destination for Time Machine. I have had this drive for awhile and seem to be having no problem with it and have not had an issue with Time Machine previously. I have a new added a second firewire drive (2tb) in daisy chain to the first (the 6tb). Whenever this drive is included in my TM backup profile, TM fails. Whenever I remove it, TM seems to work. I am wondering if the issue is the sequence of the drives (the TM drive perhaps needing to be the last in the chain), an issue with TM or perhaps an indication of a hardware problem with the new drive itself. Anyone got a clue?
Thanks.Okay, apparantly no one else seems to be having this issue. That being the case then, how do I find a log file to get an error code so I can try to determine *why* Time Machine is failing?

G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive (during the cloning process) in an external case, could I simply install the new hard drive into an idle G5 that has no hard drive in it thus using the idle G5 as an elaborate external case? What cables would I use to connect the 2 computers? Ethernet? USB? Could I use the firewire cable that is normally used by my Apple camera (the camera that is an aluminum tube, I forget the name of that thing). The idle G5 is a 1.6 model, would that matter? Thanks
I personally can think of two options.
1. Mount the drive in which the copy of the first hard drive will go to inside of the 2.7gHZ G5's case. There is room for two hard drives in there. See Link for Help
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5_HD_DIY.pdf
Once it is installed, simply boot off of your Mac OS Install media (CD, DVD, USB) it can be any version that supports the PowerPC platform. You need to boot holding the "C" key. Then choose Disk Utility and hit the restore tab. Drag the old partition to the "Source" field and the new hard drive to the "destination" field.
2. Put the second hard drive into the second (idle) G5. You will need a copy of the Mac OS install DVD as again you cannot clone a drive when it is in use (running the operating system). Hold down the "T" key at boot up and then a firewire logo will bounce on the monitor. then plug the cable into the 2.7 g5 and start it up
I hope that this is helpful.

Hello there. Does anyone know of a good external firewire & USB 2.0 case for a DVD burner? I also need it to work with Mac & PC. Any ideas?
I'm very happy with the external cases by http://www.granitedigital.com/ (also known as Relax Technologies). I haven't used one that has USB 2, but there 1170 case is very good for hard drives. Not sure though how well it will work with a DVD burner. Might want to check http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ to see if there are any issues with specific cases on DVD burners.

10.4.7, PB G4 550MHz, Firewire external peripherals
Hi,
I updated from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 a few days ago and since then no more firewire periphrals are mounted. No external HD, no DV cam, no external DVD-RW. I tested all these peripherals on other PCs and Mac and there are recognized without problems.
I ran the bunch of troubleshoot like reset PRAM, NVRAM, PMU, let PB without battery for 2 hours and reinstall 10.4.7 from the Combo for PPC update but nothing.
System information application keeps showing the firewire port with the information its speed is 400Mbits/s but no firewire peripheral is detected or mounted.
I bought a compatible Mac OS X firewire/USB2.0 PC card and I plugged it into the PB G4. Ports are shown in System Information but when an external HD is plugged no drive mounted.
I'm quite sure the PB G4 firewire plug isn't down but it's like Mac OS X or Open Firmware refuse to mount any firewire device ?
Any luminous idea ?
Many thanks
PB G4 550MHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)No but usually there is no jumper to set if you want the 2.5" HD to be a Master drive.
Here is a funny thing. A friend of mine gave me his old PowerMac G4 400MHz. I took out from the PB G4 the 2.5HD, I put it in an external case Firewire and now I can boot directly from it on the PowerMac G4. All my firewire peripherals open OK.
It really looks like 10.4.7 update made the powerbook's logicboard got crazy or it's a strange " coïncidence " .
Now my next challenge is to try to get back to life the powerbook's motherboard... It could be I'm a dreamer....
Still any good advice is welcome.
Best

New Firewire external hard drive freezes
I have an external USB hard drive, and it works fine if I test it by copying and pasting 10 .jpg files (total ~ 2Meg) to the external USB hard drive from the internal hard drive. I got a new external firewire hard drive and if I try the same test, it freezes mid-copy. (It just sits there forever and I actually have to power down to get it to un-freeze).
It's a brand new Acomdata 250GB firewire external hard drive.
What could be wrong?
Thanks!Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'd return the drive. Get a drive from
Otherworld Computing
Granite Digital (they make cases to go around internal drives)
LaCie
Cooldrives
These are the only ones I know to reliably work under Mac OS X 10.3 or higher.

Pioneer dvr110D in external case (Conceptronic )
Hello,
I need help, please!
I have G4 with OS 9.2,Toast 5.2.3,
Pioneer DVR 110D in the
Conceptronic external case with USB2 connection.
And the problem is that the Toast writes the message that "No CD recorder is found".
What should I do???!!
(I've asked that question in someone's topic already but didn't got the answer, so I'm opening the new one)
10xWhen I insert a cd to the burner it shows on the desktop, does it mean something?
Yes. But what it means depends on whether it's a commercially pressed CD, a burned CD-R, a burned CD-RW, a blank CD-R or -RW, or any of several kinds of DVDs or blank DVD media. Please tell us which of these possible types of media your drive is able to read, and which it isn't (if any).
If the drive can read all sorts of discs but can't burn any — either using Disc Burner or Toast — then one of two possibilities is likely: either a) the above-mentioned conflict between Apple's disc burning-related software and Toast is interfering, and you need to disable one or the other; or b) the drive unit is not supported by the versions of Toast and Disc Burner you are using.
The appearance of any kind of optical disc on the desktop establishes that your drive enclosure, your FireWire cable, and your Mac's FireWire port are working. -
Boot from Firewire External, OS 9.2, Lombard 400 with OrangeLink card?
I have a Lombard 400, running 9.2.1 with an OrangeLink Card. I have a Firewire external drive with a bootable 10.3.9 drive cloned to it. I have sucessfully booted from this drive to clone the drive to another powerbook I have, so I know it is bootable. The firewire drive shows up on the desktop of the Lombard and I can choose it as the startup disk in the control panel. However, when I restart the computer, it boots back into OS 9. What step am I missing here? I read documentation that the Firewire card is okay for booting.
Amy,
Unfortunately you cannot boot through a FireWire PC card; it does not have the onboard firmware necessary to initialize at startup as does built-in FireWire. In addition, it does require supporting software and this does not load until the OS loads. The only bootable external drive would be a pure SCSI HD or an ATA/IDE HD in a case that uses a SCSI interface.
There is one possible alternative which I have never tried, but the application XPostFacto, used to install OSX on unsupported machines, can be used as a "helper" to boot an external FW drive through a PC card. How well this works I just don't know...

Firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized
After last system update, my firewire external mobil disk hard drive is no longer recognized. Any solutions?
Why does MacOS go backwards... gets worse over time?Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! I have had no trouble with any update Apple puts out (the Combo update is what I normally choose). Are you running 9.2 like your specs. say? You are in the Tiger forum, so I'll assume you haven't updated your Macs specs.
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours may be the 10.4.5 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Good Luck!
Cheers!

Unable to capture to firewire external
I'm new to final cut express ( just got it 2 days ago) and also I bought a G-drive mini 250GB firewire 800 external. I can capture to my internal, but when I have my firewire external connected, final cut express tells me it can't find any firewire camera, and when I try to capture, it tells me there is no device found. however, if I first connect my camera, my camera shows up in final cut express but my external won't mount. anyone have an idea what's going on. btw. my camera is a Canon Elura 80 minidv camcorder, and I have a 2.2 GHz macbook pro.
It's odd that I was able to capture to an external drive under Tiger, but have absolutely no joy doing so under Leopard (in either FCE or iMovie HD ... and, yes, I am using Canon cameras ... sigh). Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I seem to recall using Firewire Basic as the profile had been working for me.

Using a firewire external drive for Raid
Hi
I posted a question related to this earlier but not specifially on this topic, hence this post.
I was watching Lynda.com video tutorial for servers and noted how easy it seemed to set up a raid solution. However since I am going to use a mac mini for a server I cannot have two harddiscs in it. However I can have a firewire external disc as well as usb 2.0 discs. I figure usb is way to slow, but the firewire should be fast enough..so my question is..can I just buy a firewire disc connect it..use diskutility and set up a raid? Or is there something special I need to concern myself with here i.e special type of external disc etc?
It would be supercool if I could do it this way. Might add, this is low traffic personal server and not a critical server at work..still would be nice with raid though. Then I would do time machine via the usb to an external disc.
Cudos to everyone on the list for all your help.slightly better than a daisy chained raid array is a multiple bay external firewire enclosure that either offers hardware mirroring or can be mirrored in software. i've used these on client servers before, and they generally work fine.
please be sure to consider the pros and cons of running a mini as a server 24/7, as the 2.5" internal drives aren't generally made to do such things. i usually discourage using minis as servers unless budget or other circumstances prohibit something better. -
My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?
You'll get better performance if you use a Firewire hard drive (especially if you buy a 7200 RPM drive). Firewire's IO speed is significantly faster than USB 2. USB 2 has a theoretical max speed of 480 Mbps except that it has extremely high over-head. The fastest speeds you can typically get are about 300 Mbps. Firewire, on the other hand, has very little overhead. The fastest speeds you can get are very nearly 800 Mbps. You will typically be constrained by the maximum read/write speed of the drive, not the speed of the I/O on the Firewire bus. Now if you had one of those nice shiny new Macs with the Thunderbolt I/O and a Thunderbolt drive (Light Peak) ... I think they alter space and time so that your data arrives before you know you want it.
Also... unless you want to buy a solid state drive (very expensive), try to keep your hard drives from becoming much more than about 60% full if you want great performance. A nearly "full" hard drive is, on average, only about half as fast as the same hard drive when nearly empty.
USB 2 will work perfectly fine... just not as fast.
Also... it's much safer to move the entire Aperture library than to "relocate masters". Your images must be managed. You can Aperture manage them, or you can manage them. But someone has to manage them. If you "relocate" them so that they are no longer stored inside the Aperture library then you'll need to work out a system of how you decide to organize things and it's critically important that you don't start moving files around or deleting things without Aperture's knowledge. If you do, you'll break the links to your masters and start having problems with missing masters. If you have Aperture manage the library then you don't need to worry about any of that stuff.... it's safer.
Do make backups (use the Aperture Vault or use some other backup program, but make sure you back up your work if you care about it.) There are only two kinds of hard drives in the world: (1) those that have failed and (2) those that are going to fail. There are no exceptions to this rule. Hard drives are cheap. Backup software is built into Aperture and into your Mac. -
Firewire external writer not seen by Windows 7
I have Windows 7 x64 running very sweetly in my MacBook Pro 2.2 on a Kingston SSD 128 V series. I installed the X64 drivers from the SL disk as detailed elsewhere in this forum.
Everything is working except a Freecom LS Pro external DVD writer, when connected by firewire. Windows 7 simply doesn't see it. Not in Device Manager or anywhere. Fine connected USB.
The same LS Pro works fine with firewire in a Vista Bootcamp partition on my Mac Pro, and on the Mac partition on the MBP.
Firewire external hard drives work fine on the Windows 7 partition.
It looks like a missing driver for firewire DVD writer in Windows 7 bootcamp.
Will I have to wait for the imminent new Bootcamp release, or is there another solution?
Anyone have the same problem?I managed to work out why iTunes couldn't see the ext writer [I didn't check it in the drop down menu...]
So, although I didn't manage to get AIFF files written to the disc to work on my CD player... the situation is now resolved.
