3 56G wireless ready Macs need info on a wireless router.

We have a two level house and the macintosh that will have the router will be on one end of the house on the seconds level while the other two mac are on the first floor.
The first would be in the middle of the of the other two and we estimate the distance with the wireless antena pointing down to the lower level that would would need a wireless area coverage of about 70ft a 100 would probably cover us and be the better choice.
anyone help me as we are stuck on dialup till I find out which would be the better wireless router for out problem.
Thanks.

There are of course several different options available to you.
One of many is this set-up here.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
Bear in mind that if you do not use an Airport Extreme Base (Router), The Router you use must be able to use WDS set-up to extend the network with Airport Express.
There are literaly 100s of different Routers on the Market from the various manufactures all of them make good products it is really hard to guage which has the best coverage area, I have had several and the Airport Extreme is by far and away the easiest to confiqure for Mac.
Good Luck with your choice.
One last thing many users cringe at the price of the Airport Extreme, but remember it is also a print server as well and if you fiqure each as a stand alone hardware it's cheap.

  • Need info for adding wireless to wired setup

How do I add wireless to my wired setup? There is an imac, macbook Pro, and an HP laptop on a wired router. I expect to add ipod touch to the group. I don't know anything about wireless so I don't know what I need to know!
    Any info would be welcome.

Please be sure to check back if you do have any questions, especially before purchasing anything. Ken also offered another option and that would be to turn one of your Macs into a "software" router.
OS X has a built-in Internet sharing feature. Without having to buy any additional networking equipment, the Mac that has both Ethernet and AirPort capability could be used as a router. It is not full featured and it does not offer very good wireless security, but it may just be what you need in the mean time.
However, in the long run, I would recommend that you just get a WAP or an AirPort Express to provide the wireless network.
An example of a non-Apple WAP would be the Linkys/Cisco WAP610N.

  • New to Mac need info about Time Machine Backups

Just bought a Macbook Air and partitioned 50MB for Windows & Quicken. Most of the time I'm getting used to Mac software. Anyway when I backup using Time Machine does that backup the Windows Partition or just the Mac Partition?

I hope you mean 50 GB?
If you're using Boot Camp, no, Time Machine can't back up the Windoze partition, since it's not formatted for a Mac.
I understand there's a 3rd-party app named WinClone that many folks use for that. You might want to check the Boot Camp forum, at: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237

  • I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought iPad (today). What hardware do I need to set up wireless LAN so iPad can be used anywhere in house? Will Linksys work with Apple?

I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought an iPad2 and need to know what hardware do I need to add wireless LAN so I can use iPad anywhere in the house. Will a Linksys router work with Apple? Can Mac be "hardwired" and iPad wireless? Probably stupid questions but I need to learn. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. You are correct. I was speaking in general terms here based on my experience with the two devices in day to day use, and not in terms of exact specifications.
A better choice would have been to say that the "coverage" is about the same with the edge going to the Extreme....due to the newer mutliple antenna design.
We sure could use more help on the forums. Hope that you will become a regular.
    Hi Bob
RF is a minefield, but one that I have worked in for ages, the most critical factor in my experience is location, location, location!
Better routers have more intelligently designed antenna systems, output power as I said is the same, radiation pattern (coverage) is dependent on antennas and physical location more than all other factors.

  • Mac pro 2008 wireless ready?

    Hi guys,
    I have a late 2008 Mac Pro.
I've just got a new wireless Internet package for home and am trying to set up my Mac to use wireless internet - it hadn't tried  wireless on it before.
Once the router was set up properly (while on the phone to the router company) I was told this Mac possibly wasn't wireless ready?
Is this true?? Must say I was very surprised and assumed it'd be ready to go wireless no probs.
If so what do I have to do to make it so?
    Do I need an airport?
    Many thanks.
    James

The built-in Wi-Fi adapter was optional. If it doesn't have one, you may be able to use a USB Wi-Fi adapter, but check for Mac compatibility.

You need the Airport card OR Airport Express but not both.  Considering the age of your machine, I recommend Airport Express as you will find other uses for it whenever you replace the eMac.
To set up the AE, you do need OSX 10.4 or higher.

i need Mac driver for TP-Link Wireless USB adapter model no TL-WN7200ND

First of all, TP-Link does not provide OS X drivers for that adapter. However, there are other sources that have drivers like this one. It is not official and it may fail, but it has been tested by other users and it works correctly.

Can anyone advise me please. I have done some research and think a USB adapter is the best option as I doubt the eMac will be able to take a card but the software will have to be able to run on tiger.

  • What kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GH

    hi there,
I have for sometime now a "Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5", and recently I have been thinking to get an Airport extreme wireless card with a bluetooth on it, which could work on my machine.
I have already try to deal with apple representatives and Apple sales people to give me a hand on the matter and so far is been a nightmare to approach this guys, tired of wasting time and effort, so that is way I am posting a topic on this section to see if you guys could give a hand on the matter.
All what I would like to know is what kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 (version 10.4.11) and where I could buy one on line to install myself.
This is the mac unit I have.
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 4.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1
    Thanks for you time.

You're welcome. Funny how Apple works isn't it? If it's any consolation, that Airport/Bluetooth card doesn't show up on the Apple U.S. store either. I don't think they ever intended it to be a user installable part, so perhaps that's why they don't offer it for sale. Do you have any Apple Authorized Service providers in your area? I'd think they'd be able to order the card as a replacement part.
Can you give a little more detail or a link to the gadget you're referring to? It sounds like a USB dongle to enable Wi-Fi, but that must be a third party solution, since I don't believe Apple ever offered something like that.

  • Is the iMac G5 wireless ready?

I want to connect my iMac G5 to a Netgear wireless router and can't seem to figure it out. I've searched, with no luck, to find out if this model comes wireless ready. Do I need to install a card to accomplish this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    NorthArt-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Go to ->About this Mac under the Apple menu. When the window pops up select ->More Info.
In the left column of that window should be a ->Network selection with ->AirPort Card under that. If you click on -Airport Card and see what it says.

  • Need help setting up wireless on G5 tower

I recently inherited a G5 tower and I am trying to set it up with my existing wireless connection. I currently have a D-link router that works for my laptop.
I am 99% sure that the G5 tower has Airport. It has an airport icon on the top of the screen, and I can turn it on/off. Also, under About This Mac -> More Info it shows an airport extreme card.
After setting up the computer, I was dissapointed to see that it didn't pick up a wireless signal. It is about 25-30ft from the wireless router. I bought an antenna because I thought it would fix the problem, but it still doesn't find any networks.
Am I missing something?? I am new to Macs so maybe I have to type in the network name or something? I would think it would just show up as an option when I open Internet Connect. Please help! I have been trying to figure this out for weeks and it is driving me crazy.
    Reed

Hi Reed, and a warm welcome to the forums & Macdom!
    Go to System Preferences
    Click Network
    Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Then click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.
(The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.)

  • I have acquired a  old G5 MAXC and need to make it wireless?

I have acquired a  old G5 MAXC and need to make it wireless?

The majority of G5 iMacs shiped with a built-in Airport Extreme card. Started with models shipped in May 2005. To see if yours has woreless already installed, , please do "About this Mac" for your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More info.." button. That opens System Profiler.
There is a right-hand "Contents" pane; from it, select "Airport" from the "Network section. Should look like this:
If the main pane shows similar entries to the ones in the example, you have wireless capability.
If you do not have an Airport card present, they are now rather inexpensive on the used/pulled market:

  • HP Printer can no longer be found wirelessly by Mac and iOS devices?

I have an HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw printer which has been successfully connected wirelessly for quite some time. I recently replaced an older Time Capsule (flat square) with one of the new tower-looking Time Capsules, and the same replacement for an Airport Express I use as an access point. Again this is all the same setup as previously.
The issue is none of the devices can find the printer wirelessly anymore, despite the fact that the printer reports it's on the network and operating fine, and I can see the printer in the Printers & Scanners/Add window. I have attempted downloading and reinstalling the software from HP, deleting old printers in the Preferences panel and reinstalling from there, and nothing has worked. If I try to re-add the printer using the Bonjour Multifunction entry and AirPrint as the driver, it gets as far as the "Setting up the device" progress dialog and then fails with an error that reads: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected device. Unable to communicate with the printer at this time."
I have tried setting up an IP reservation for the printer and using the IP setup in the Add window (instead of the default); with and without the HP Jetdirect protocol; using the AirPrint driver and the selected HP series driver -- no success with any choice.
So far my only workaround is connecting it by USB to the nearest Mac and sharing it on the network using Printer Sharing. This is not the ideal solution, of course, since it means my iOS devices still can't find it and the Mac needs to be turned on 24/7 to share out the printer. I bought this printer originally specifically for its AirPrint capability so I could print to it from iPads and iPhones as well as my Macs. Currently I can't print from any iOS devices so it's rather painful.
Any suggestions to get this fixed will be much appreciated

Reset the TC to factory and start again..
New names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TCgen5 base station name.
I also strongly recommend using different names for the bands when things go wrong. TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
Use WPA2 personal security with a short pure alphanumeric password.. (short meaning 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers)
Redo the setup of the Express based on the new setup.
Redo the connection of the printer to the wireless network.
Test the printer by pinging it from the computer.
Delete all drivers in the computer for the printer.. and start over.
That generally will get it running.
If not use the old TC as a wireless AP for printer connection .. by doing extend wireless with it and placing it near the printer.

  • What do I need to create a wireless external hard drive?

Here's the situation. Hubs and I have just combined households. Between us we have a Macbook Pro laptop (10.5.8. mine), an HP laptop (his), a westell router from century link and 3 external firewire/usb hardrves, one of which serves as my time capsule. We also have a wireless printer.
One of the external harddrives has my tv shows and movies, downloaded from itunes, stored temporarily since my mac is out of space. We'd like to be able to access our external harddrives wirelessly, so that I can move my itunes library and media files to one and access them wirelessly, have my time capsule hooked up permenantly, and so he could access his moies/shows/music on his external hard drive wirelessly.
What do I need to create a wireless hookup for my external hard drives that is compatible with macs and pcs, and is relatively easy to do (neither of us are particularly tech savvy, but with the right instructions we can do okay)

That router you have is really not a router. It is a DSL modem that does have rudimentary router with one port.
What you really need to do is set the westel into Bridged Ethernet mode, that disables the router function in it, and get yourself a good router that has a USB port to connect a USB drive or printer to it. there may be models that have more then one USB port so you could connect multiple devices to the router.
It isn't hard making these changes but i won't go into it here. For that go to DSLReports.com and look up your ISP and then the FAQs for your ISP. More then likely someone has posted detailed instruction on how to do what I described above for your model Westel modem and your ISP.
Or follow Csound1's link to a wireless NAS (Network Attached Storage).
    Good Luck.
