3.6.11 seems to be much more cpu heavy...
After I installed version 3.6.11, Firefox seemed to run more slowly. The cpu usage spikes frequently even when I'm not on any active websites and it tends to be unresponsive when this happens.
Well, in safe mode things seem a bit better but still Firefox uses 16%-22% CPU resources when minimized doing nothing. Question is what now? Sorting out addons one by one?
Thing it that Firefox does not shows the problem immediately after restart. It takes 10-20 minutes before it starts to 'eat' my CPU resources...

A few minutes after Firefox 19.02 is started, it starts to consume about 40%-50% of the CPU continuously.
deactivating all plugins and addons does not change the situation.
This never happened before even with many tabs open etc.Well, in safe mode things seem a bit better but still Firefox uses 16%-22% CPU resources when minimized doing nothing. Question is what now? Sorting out addons one by one?

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple? I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!
Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

Test program running taking much more time on high end server T5440 than low end server T5220
Hi all,
I have written the following program and run on both T5440 [1.4 GHz, 95 GB RAM, 32 cores(s), 256 logical (virtual) processor(s),] and T5220 [(UltraSPARC-T2 (chipid 0, clock 1165 MH) , 8GB RAM, 1 core, 8 virtual processors )] on same OS version. I found that T5540 server takes more time than T5220. Please find below the details.
test1.cpp
#include <iostream>
#include <pthread.h>
using namespace std;
#define NUM_OF_THREADS 20
struct ABCDEF {
char A[1024];
char B[1024];
void *start_func(void *)
long long i = 6000;
while(i--)
ABCDEF* sdf = new ABCDEF;
delete sdf;
sdf = NULL;
return NULL;
int main(int argc, char* argv[])
pthread_t tid[50];
for(int i=0; i<NUM_OF_THREADS; i++)
pthread_create(&tid[i], NULL, start_func, NULL);
cout<<"Creating thread " << i <<endl;
for(int i=0; i<NUM_OF_THREADS; i++)
pthread_join(tid[i], NULL);
cout<<"Waiting for thread " << i <<endl;
After executing the above program on T5440 takes :
real 0.78
user 3.94s
sys 0.05
After executing the above program on T5220 takes :
real 0.23
user 1.43s
sys 0.03
It seems that T5440 which is high end server takes almost 3 times more time than T5220 which is low end server.
However, I have one more observation. I tried the following program :
test2.cpp
#include <iostream>
#include <pthread.h>
using namespace std;
#define NUM_OF_THREADS 20
struct ABCDEF {
char A[1024];
char B[1024];
int main(int argc, char* argv[])
long long i = 6000000;
while(i--)
ABCDEF* sdf = new ABCDEF;
delete sdf;
sdf = NULL;
return 0;
It seems that T5440 server is fast in this case as compaired to T5220 server.
Could anyone please help me out the exact reason for this behaviour as my application is slow as well on this T5440 server. I have posted earlier as well for the same issue.
Thanks in advance !!!

Why is 24GB or RAM so much more then 12GB ?
I understand that it is double the size but man is it way more expensive.
It seems like anyone here that has built a core i7 has gone the 12GB route but im sure would like to max out the motherboard at 24GB
You hear people say that RAM is cheap but not 24GB.
Need 2 sets of these to make 24GB.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147%201052346982&name=1 2GB%20%283%20x%204GB%29
Just curious: GlennDDR3 has taken quite some time to get produced in 2 GB sticks and they were initially much more expensive than DDR2 sticks. Now that the i7 has gained a firm foothold one sees the price of 2 GB DDR3 sticks dropping rapidly, but where people were coming from 4 GB machines or even less, 12 GB memory seemed more than enough for the future, so there was hardly any demand for the latest sticks in 4 G sizes. For video editors and the upcoming 64 bit CS5 applications, one may see some more interest in 4 GB sticks, more manufacturers to enter that specific market and dropping prices as a consequence of increased competition in that smallish market, but I think it will be only by next year that the sizable premium on 4 G sticks will diminish somewhat. As always, being at the leading edge of technology carries a hefty price-tag.
Now with TESLA around the corner and the C2070 co-processor which carries 6 GB of its own memory, and is not an SLI solution (which is initially not supported in CS5, according to Dennis), support for this co-processor may alleviate the memory requirements for more than 12 GB.
Price erosion only happens when more manufactures get into the game and demand rises, leading to more competition. Just remember what happened with the prices of DVD or BRD players, plasma or LCD flat screens, etc. So, give it some time... -
Just updated to itunes 12.1.0.71 - big problem - can no longer access the legacy "Get Info" where you could change multiple files, easily add artwork, add album name for TV show, and much more. In previous iTunes 12 you'd right click and hold shift key and be able to get to it. Anyone figured this out?
The "legacy" metadata editors, for which there was a "back door" in iTunes 12.0, have gone from 12.1. However, the revised editors in 12.1 provide access to (almost) all the metadata elements that were available in iTunes 11, albeit in a different layout and with some additional constraints based on media kind. Some users have / will have an issue with the statement that "Get Info has been completely redesigned in iTunes 12 to focus your attention only on what’s necessary for the selected item" since that removes some metadata elements that people may have been using in creative ways. iTunes 12.1 basically gives you access to the fields that Apple think are necessary ... . Some of the things that have been excluded by this rule:
track and disc number fields for video media kinds
show and episode fields for music
description tab for audiobooks made up of more than one file
Obviously the first two examples can be regarded as "overloading" the metadata elements - i.e., using them in ways that the designers didn't intend - but given that some users do find valid cases for this it's a shame that they've been deprecated in the new UI. There are couple of workarounds:
in songs view (or any of the other columnar views), you can still select any fields to display, independent of media kind, and these can be edited (though only one at a time) by double-clicking in the relevant "cell"
you can (temporarily) change the media kind of an item (or group of items) to get access to metadata elements that would otherwise be inaccessible.
It may be worth submitting an issue via https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html - I can't see it as a huge development task to have a user preference to switch between "show all fields" and "filter fields based on media kind".
One other oddity/irritation is that some of the tabs don't, by default, show all the available fields - you need to scroll up/down to access them or to expand the window by dragging on one of its corners. Fortunately, the latter seems to be persistent - once you've done this to make all the fields visible the editor will open at the same (larger) size when opened again. -
Whay after new firefox download all pages load so much more slowly
I have been prompted twice in the last couple of days to download new firefox updats.
Since then, my web pages load very much more slowly than they ever had before. I have tried the usual system maintenance tools with no improvement in efficiency or speed.
The downloading process states it disables quite a few normal operating systems involving Java and Adobe etc. Why?
It seems you are improving firefox at the cost of the rest of the system. How is that supposed to help any web use?Everything is probably working fine for most of 400 million Firefox users. Whatever the problem is it will probably only affect a few users, and may well be due to something to do with how you have Firefox set up on your computer.
If you are able to provide more information it helps us in trying to help you. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so attaching a couple of screenshots of the problem pages may assist us.
The suggestions in my first post did '''not''' involve installing and uninstalling anything, just simple tests and changes using mouse clicks. In fact I pointed out a reinstall may not solve problems.
(A special clean reinstall, or setting up a new profile does sometimes help, but first of all lets just try to find out first of all what you are seeing on your own computer screen) -
Websphere/Oracle 11 - much more Heap Usage than with Oracle 10
Hi all,
while testing our application with Oracle 11 (previously, we had Oracle 10), we saw that our server uses much more heap space.
It seems as it has something to do with T4CConnection/T4CPreparedStatement; there are 500 objects of T4CPreparedStatement allocated. Someone told me, that Oracle 11 is using SoftReferences to keep the connection pool; but we don't need that.
Is that correct? Could that be the problem for the increased heap space? If yes - how can we avoid connection pooling?
Thanks a lot!!
Edited by: 840550 on 28.02.2011 23:37I suspect you are getting a connection for each user and holding onto it for the duration that he is logged in. Also, that you are not closing resultSet and preparedStatements correctly. Rewrite all your code to get/use/close a connection each time its needed as quickly as possible in a try/catch/finally block. There is no performance penalty opening and closing connections countless times in your code (actually, you are not really closing it, but returning it to the pool).
Here is a previous post I provided on how to get/use/close a connection:
Re: can not get the right query result using JDBC
Note: within the above example, you can pass the already open connection to another function within the above function for it to use. Within that other function, you create a new preparedStatement and resultSet. After using it, you close the resultSet and preparedStatement (in that second function), but not the connection (its closed in the outer function). -
Numbers is much more responsive under leopard
I am finding that Numbers is much more responsive under leopard... no longer an irritation waiting for the program to become usable after switching to it... still a bit more delay than there should be but much better.
Stephenit seems to me to still be awfull slow for the most simple tasks like changing the number of decimals to display, changing it from 1 to 2 digits, on a table that is only 28 rows long and 2 columns wide, it takes about 2 minutes
I just tried creating a default table - 40-odd rows, 12 columns, and filled them all with pi(). Changing the number of decimal places for the whole table went very quickly - maybe 0.5 seconds.
I then tried filling with nearly all different numbers, with different numbers of decimals. Now changing the number of decimals takes several seconds each time. -
I want to have all my music on my iphone and macbook (and pc if possible) but when I try to synchronise I am told I will lose any music from my iphone which is not on my macbook (there is much more on my iphone than my macbooK). How do I keep all my downloaded and copied music and have it available on both machines (plus pc if possible)?
The music sync is one way only - computer to iphone. The exception is itunes purchases: Without syncing: File>Transfer Purcahses
The iphone will sync with only one copmptuer at a time. Sycning with another will erase the current content of the iphone and replace it with content from the new computer. -
After upgrading to Lion, wifi seems to be much slower, is this caused by lion?
Hello All,
After upgrading to Lion, my MMA wifi seems to work much slower than before, and also the start up seems to be slower too. Is that caused by upgrading to Lion? Please helpGive it a few days and a dozen or so restarts.
The software may be updating Spotlight indexing and a few other "housekeeping" tasks.
My upgrade on a 2010 Air resulted in a slowdown at first, but then began to return to normal. At first, the boot time doubled, but within a couple of days, it was back to a 12 second boot. -

i do all things about cleaning disk permission or editing .Have you check what is being started at the same time?
Lion will start more applications then were being started in the past.

i have an iphone that is using battery life much more quickly than in the past, a full charge is going to zero in a half a day or so, with out much use.
an icon is also appearing next to the charge percentage in the top right, and the icon is a circle around a lock
can anyone tell me what the problem is, and what the icon means?The Icon meas your display orientation is locked to vertical so it wont change when you turn the phone sideways.
First thing you should check with the battery life is multitasking, which also happens to be where the orientation lock can be turned off. check out http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211 and go from there -

I recently had to reinstall iTunes on my PC (Windows 7) and lost most of the library. I restored with what I had on my hard drive on the PC, but there is much more music on my iPod classic than is in the iTunes current library. I'm worried that if I synch now it will delete the extra music from my iPod, some of which I don't have available to re-rip etc.. Will this happen, or is it safe to synch more content without losing from the iPod what is already there but not in my iTunes library on the PC? Thanks in advance for any help.
Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.
