3 short beeps or 3 long beeps? before or after seeing the POST screen?
do you have any USB Storage devices?

  • R61 will not power on, no beeps or POST

My R61 only blinks green power / amber battery for a second and will not turn on.  No beep, no POST.
Recently the original battery in the R61 went from about 60% capacity to 3% capacity overnight.  Since I had purchased used, I suspected the generic power supply I had bought about a year ago when I got the R61.  I ordered an authentic Lenovo power supply, but still got only 3%.  All was well since I was using the Thinkpad plugged in to the Lenovo power supply (also worked with generic) but about three days ago the laptop would not power on.
My roomate suggested that the bad battery might be to blame and that I should try it without the battery.  I tried it, but still only get green power / amber battery lights for a second and then it shuts down.  I have already tried the 10 power button pushing with 30 sec hold after and no response.  I just re-set the RAM and back-up battery (also 1 yr. old) to make sure they had not been jostled loose.
Would a new battery help or is the R61 damaged?  Don't have much cash, so don't want the possibly damaged R61 to ruin a new battery.  Any ideas or is my best bet to buy another R61 / T61 and make use of my RAM, DVD, and HDD?
P.S. I know there are similiar threads already, but none have a solutions and they are about 3 yrs. old.

I know this is hard to take but that product line has had known board failures because of it design and chipset. There is basically nothing much you can do to resurrect it at this point in time once that problem has appeard. The most likely failure of this model line was the video chipset that would fail on these boards. If the problem was caught earlier and the heat sink was redone that might have prevent the video from failing causing no boot in your case. But that is what I see and read that these units had lots of video chipset failures and only two of which I fixed the thermal sink on one that is still running and another cleaned out much of the dust as I could and is still working. So I think once this model line hits the black screen boot that usually means it's a gooner.

    Hello mate,
One beep is normal is start from shut down, it normally don't do it from a reset.

  • P45 Platinum - No Beep but Post & Start Up OK

    Hello...
When I turn on my computer it passes post, gets to the boot loader and starts up without any problems.
However, I noticed that it doesn't beep after posting successfully.
In fact, I have never heard any beeps from this mobo ever.
This new build is about 3 weeks old, stock settings, and I am slowly working towards achieving stability.
I guess I should also mention that in the first couple of weeks, POST would very often stall at "Decompressing BIOS image to RAM..." when I powered-up, re-started or pressed the reset button.  But there were never any beeps.
(Red-red-green-green if you refer to the group of 8 LEDs beside the internal reset button.)
This problem is much better now - I haven't stalled in several days....but still no beep.
My old PC would beep once after post and move on to start-up....Have I just gotten used to hearing the beep?
Or is the "no beep" something I should be concerned about?
Any info would be much appreciated.

HA!  Problem solved....and I feel like an ass!  So sorry...I totally went blonde for a bit there!  I just assumed there was an on-board spkr on the P45.  (My case didn't come with a spkr.)  Anyway, I was able to salvage a really old spkr from the graveyard of computers at my work...the 2" tweeter type!  Hung it in the rear area of the case with a cable tie.  It doesn't look pretty...but it works!  Thanks!

  • Updated EUFI, new beeps on POST

    Hey
Today I updated my UEFI from 1.9 to 1.C because it didn't recognise the timings on my ram properly.
Everything is now perfect, CPUZ reports the correct timings, the new UEFI version, and the date it was released, perfect!
    Here is the problem.
Before the update my motherboard used to beep for every USB item attached. Now, I just get one long beep.
Everything works perfectly, the computer posts instantly and everything is fine in both windows and UEFI.
I tried to Google this but didn't find anything. Anyone else experience this?
I used M-flash directly in the UEFI menu.
    I use the MSI P67A C45 with an i5 2500k, Corsair XMS3 ram and HD6870.

Ok, so it's normal? They just changed it for some reason?

  • M58p at start-up double beep, no post screen, no splash

    Hi there,
Yesterday my Avast antivurus crashed, which itself was very unusual. I have run a quick check and found a few trojans, which names I have forget regrettably.
I've scheduled a deep scan at the boot, reboot and left for work. Upon return I found the computer with a black screen, impossible to restart.
At the boot one can only hear cpu and chassis fan tests, then a double beep and then nothing. No post screen nor splash screens. Can't enter BIOS settings.
The monitor is OK. I've reset the CMOS and battery, to no avail. One  by one I have removed all peripherals trying to boot at each step, but the outcome was consistently null.
Dealing with such symptoms I would normally assume the motherboard is good to go to the bin, but the specific circumstances -  trojans and all this stuff - make me think twice. Could some trojan or other malware put me in such a mess? If so, what to do next?

Trojans shouldn't affect booting. I hear two beeps out of an M58 and I immediately reset the memory. M58s are sensitive to the memory sticks being jossled out of position. Completely remove your memory and re-seat the sticks in the same slots. Did that do the trick??

  • 9818 will not boot. No beep, no post

    Hi all,
I've searched the forum but I can't find anything about the MSI-9818.  I've got a brand-new 9818 that will not post.  It will power up for a few seconds, power down, then re-start (which I've read is normal behavior).  Once it re-starts it will continue running until power is removed.  The monitor remains in power save mode, the keyboard lights don't come on, and there are no beeps whatsoever.  Unfortunately this motherboard does not appear to have a reset jumper, so I'm unable to try that.  I have replaced the power supply, monitor, keyboard, and memory (Kingston DDR2 800, 2gb, single stick), all to no avail.  The only things I haven't swapped are the CPU (P8400) and the motherboard itself, because frankly, that's going to be a major pain.
One possibility I considered was that it might be trying to initialize the DVI or HDMI outputs as the primary display, as I've only been testing it with a DSUB connection.  But I would think that it would still post and/or attempt to boot.
Any thoughts or suggestions before I send the whole thing back?

    Hi floor9,
I have buy a system from Logic Supply with this MB (9818) and the same CPU P8400 (cf http://www.logicsupply.com/products/c2dmv_gs_l10). There's no compatibility problem between the MB and the CPU. But if now it works (under some conditions I will explain later), I have got some problems when I received the system, it didn't POST.
    -- I wrote to Logic Supply support : --
I have connected the external 120 W AC adapter to the board and to 230V AC sector (I live in France). I plugged a LCD monitor on DVI port and press power button to start the system. But the system won't boot : the 2 front leds remains off and monitor display nothing. I try to change LCD settings (input type) with no success. For information, there are no HDD and no periphericals plugged.
I use a multimeter to mesure AC adapter output and the result is 19V DC. I mesure onboard DC-DC converter (ref GP-85) outputs after press the power button and all is ok : -12V, +5V, +3.3V. I mesure on the motherboard power connector side and I have the same voltage. A +12V voltage is available on fan power connector as example. The front panel (power switch, hdd & power leds) jumpers positions are ok, compliants with motherboard manual.
When I plug the external adapter, the first time I press the power switch, the left led lights up very briefly (1/2 second) and go out. With the multimeter I could note that when I hold on power switch 5 seconds, power go out (motherboard shutdown). If I push again the power switch the power come back and the left led lights up briefly again.
I could note that there is no beep during this tests.
I try to remove memory (2 Transcend modules installed by Logic Supply) and start the system. There are no alarm beep.
I have unplugged the CMOS battery cable, run the system during more than 5 minutes, and replug it back in. But I have the same problem : the system won't boot.
I have try with the PSU of my desktop PC with no success too.
The system have been returned to be repaired. Logic Supply replied me that the system is functioning normally. They said that the default BIOS settings are to initialize VGA & HDMI. So the problem for them is that I used the DVI input. But I have tried one time with VGA with no success. They returned the system to me after changing the settings to activate VGA/DVI inputs. I was not confident that it will works. I received it thursday, plug my LCD monitor in DVI, plug the power supply and it works : the hdd led lights up very briefly (1/2 second), go out, 3 seconds after that the power led lights up, remains lit and the system boot. I was surprised but happy. But the problem have not disapeared. I have open the system (remove the top panel) and the same problem reappeared. If I put the top panel at the original position with screws but not screwed, the problem is again here. If the screws are screwed that works. At my opinion, in this last configuration (the normal one) the top panel with a heat pipe fixed on it comes in contact (on the 2nd P of Logic Supply copyright watermark of the following photo) with the little iron panel fixed to the CPU and resolve a false contact problem. As you propably guess, all of my tests before returned the system for repair was with the top panel removed
I don't know if that could help you because you have not exacly the same system.
To identify the root cause, I suggest you to plug 2 leds, HDD & power, on the MB (if not already done). When you power up the MB, you must see the hdd led lights up very briefly (1/2 second), go out, 3 seconds after that the power led lights up and remains lit. If the power led remains off you have probably a problem with the MB or the CPU (or a false contact like me).
If you have any other questions, I would be glad to help you if I could.
    In any case, good luck.

  • H61MA-E35 (B3) 4 beeps on POST with Ivy Bridge

Just built this machine, it has never posted and I am getting a 4 beeps and then a reboot whenever it is turned on.
I looked it up online and found it's either it's something to do with a timer(?) or the most probable cause being the current bios not supporting the Ivy Bridge CPU I'm using.
So basically, am I indeed correct in thinking the CPU isn't compatible with the current BIOS? If so, is there anyway to flash it without a cpu/using the incompatible CPU? As I don't really want to buy another processor just to use this one.
    Thanks for any help.

As you don't know what bios you have it is hard to say but it is an old B3 board so most likely it has no Ivy Bridge supporting bios. You could add S/N to say for sure. If it has a bios not supporting Ivy Bridge there is no other way than using a Sandy cpu to update bios or asking MSI or a pc shop to do it for you.

  • Blank Screen No Beep No Post on new Z87-G45 Gaming

I posted this on another forum, but since I think my issue might be a bit different I figured a new message would be better.
I switch on older mobo with the this one, new ram, and new Cpu.
When I power it on everything spins up but no post no screen no beep nothing....just spinning fans.
I did all the tests, plugs, bent socket, ram chips, etc...
Since I was switching out a older motherboard with this one, I knew my power supply was good but who knows.
Today.  I took a case and stripped it down to metal...put in all the correct mounts in the correct positions, new (in box) Antec 650W PSU
Mounted the board in the new case, connected the speaker, usbs and switches.  Plugged in the PSU.
Note: I didn't hook up anything.  No Hard disk, no DVD drive, no keyboard, no mouse, nothing.
plugged in the monitor (via DVI)
turned it on...same result.  Spinning CPU fans but no beep and a blank screen.
BTW, I registered at the MSI support site but since I send in my serial number tag for the rebate I couldn't register a product.
    MOBO: Z87-G45 Gaming  purchased 12/30/2013

    RAM:  Patriot 2x8GB (in slot 2 and slot 4) PC3-15000 1866Mhz
    PSU: Antec  650W
Yesterday I even pulled out the multimeter and started look at the voltage numbers...not that I know what they are supposed to be.
    What else can I try?
Any help would be great and thank you!

    Just an update.
I returned the board to Fry's and while there, there was someone else returning the same board for the exact same reason.  He got a different board and I just exchanged mine for the same model (even though it was an open box).
I followed xmad's advice and did a out of case test with it.  While sitting on the plastic 'Conductive Grid Bag, I plugged in the CPU, the RAM and the power.  Hooked up the DVI and turned on the power.
and....got a message on the screen about the amount of memory has changed.
I'll take that.   Putting the board in the case and hooking up all the wires now.
Thank you xmad for helping me out....at least I know I wasn't going insane.

Anyone have an idea what could be wrong or where I can find an answer.

    Hi gotmud,
I think you  may find your a little underpowered with your PSU.
What graphics card & drives have you plugged in.
See Basic Building Tips - Quote
As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
Until you get a stable system it would be best to work with just 1 memory module in slot 1

  • No video, no beeps, no post, OC LEDs on but I never pushed the button.

Hi all, hoping I can get some input here.  This is a system that was running fine earlier today.  It has infrequently been randomly resetting with no warning (Windows 7 logs a Kernal-Power event with no bugcode), and once even hard-locked to the point that even holding the power button for 4 seconds did not reset the computer--but it came back after I manually switched the PSU toggle off and back on and powered it on again.
It looked like it was going to be the same thing this time, but after toggling the switch and pressing the power button, I get all fans and MB lights (including the OC dial red LED and the blue LED next to it that are usually NOT on), but no beeps and no video (monitor remains in orange light standby state), and so far as I can tell does not post.  Any idea what this could mean, or how I can test it?  This system build is new, but the PSU is old so I'm thinking that will be my first avenue of attack.  Can't visit Fry's until morning, though...
Edit: apparently on some (all?) models there are 4 LEDs near the CPU that are supposed to give me additional info, and I think I see where they're supposed to be, but it looks like only 1 is on and none of the codes listed in the FAQ have only 1 light lit :-/

It won't Post, so I can't run Memtest.  As of a couple days ago, it was running 8+ hours error free, though I know components can fail instantaneously.  Also on this most recent occasion I did turn restart on reset off, but was away from my computer when it happened and when I returned the monitor was in orange standby mode and would not exit it, also Mouse and Keyboard (both USB) had no lights on despite being set to never power down via selective suspend.  Therefore no (visible) blue screen and my having to hard reset via the toggle like I described in the first post.
Tried clearing CMOS, behaves the same.

  • MSI Z68MA-G45 B3 2 beeps no post

ok, but what exactly you flashed?

  • K8N Neo Platinum Beeps no POST

So.. I just bought this board off of ebay and the seller Claimed, tested + working before shipping.. I can still return it but I'll try and diagnose everything I can first.
Motherboard came with AMD Athlon64 3400+ (2ghz) and heatsink.
What it's doing: Flick power switch on the power supply, system comes on automatically, all fans spin up, power LED comes on, all 3 LED's on ps2 keyboard flash for a second, then no video.. yet one steady beep in the PC Speaker, it just repeats the beep every couple seconds.
    What I've done:
Tried generic single stick of DDR-333 1gb ram in slot DDR1, tried slot DDR2, tried slot DDR3, same error
I went and swapped out the ram in my roomie's PC (two matched sticks of corsair ddr 400mhz, 512mb each, working at time of removal from his machine) with this single stick of 1gb 333mhz ddr, the single stick works in his machine and I get the 400mhz ones to diagnose with in this neo machine.
Tried a single 512mb-400 stick in DDR1, DDR2, DDR3, same beep, same no video.
Tried a both 512mb-400 sticks in DDR1+DDR2, DDR2+DDR3, DDR1+DDR3, same beep, same no video.
Two video cards I have: Riva TNT2 32mb, and ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256mb.  Both video cards come up and show video and work normally in a AMD Slot-A motherboard I have in another chassis, so I know they work.  I've tried each one, with both the generic 333 ram, and the corsair ram, still beep, still no video.
I've cleared the cmos with the jumper and all power off... left it for 5 minutes that way, then put the jumper back, and reconnected power, tried again, same beep, same no video.  I'm now trying leaving it with the battery removed and the power removed, and I'll leave it sitting for about an hour until after dinner then try again.
    Power supply being used: RAIDMAX 380 watt:  26A +3.3v, 29A +5v, 18A +12v, 0.5A -5v, 0.8A -12v, 2A +5Vsb
Now, according to some other posts, some of you may be thinking "OMG not 24A or more on the +12v side!" well I've used this exact power supply to power both my intel I7-920 system (1 hard drive, no 3d video card at the time), and my Intel LGA-775 Quad Core machine (4 hard drives, 8500GT video card) at different times, and never had a single issue using it in either machine.  If it's capable of powering those two newer machines, it should at least be able to handle a little nforce3 with a single-core processor.
Do the "Neo" line of motherboards some how absolutely require higher-end power supplies to perform basic functions like just powering on?
Can anyone think of anything I'm missing here?  perhaps I have a corrupted bios some how in this board?  I'm not sure at this point.

Yeah I swapped it for my 500-watt ThermalTake power supply (Split rail, 20 amps +12v1, 22 amps +12v2) and it beeps just the same.  The riva tnt2 card doesn't require any external power source like the radeon 9800XT does, neither work... I even tried four different PCI video cards (no external power needed there), it just doesn't want to come on.
Well, Thank you all for all of your assistance... I think in the end it's just not going to come on and the guy from ebay's willing to return it so I guess I'll send it back.  Kinda sad I couldn't get it working though, it looks like a nice motherboard.

  • T61 beeps on POST

Hi, everyone.  I'm new here, but I am hoping to get a hand.  My T61 has been rebooting randomly for the past month or so (ever since it returned from Depot service for a noisy fan).  And then today, when I tried to power it on, i hear the following beep code:
    1 short, 3 short, 4 short, 3 short
And the screen doesn't even turn on.  Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?  Do I have to send it in for service?
    THanks for your help!
