3 computers 1 MAC address

ok, only 1 MAC is allowed on my home network however i had changed my MAC address on my ipod and macbook to be the requested address and everything was working perfectly (two computers with the same MAC browsing at the same time) then the airport was reset and now when any of the computers attempts to connect to the internet for the others it drops out. any ideas?
i have access to all computers but not the airport (unless someone tells me the terminal command i read of somewhere) thanks in advance

Why don't you disable the ACL (access control list) rather than messing around with cloning MAC addresses? As you have noticed, cloning MAC address is rather easy, so ACL won't deter someone who's trying to gain access to your wireless network.

  • WGM - Can't add computers due to duplicate MAC address

    Hello all,
I'm having a problem with 10.5.4 Server where once a computer is deleted from WGM it can't be added back. WGM gives an error message about duplicate MAC addresses. It appears that, although the deleted computer is no longer listed, the MAC address and name seem to still either be cached or in the database.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Saw you have no replies yet... did you ever get this issue figured out?
It's a shot in the dark, but years back we used to get zombie Macs (er, MACs) that would not show up in the list of computers, but were "still in the system" as a damaged record. Try enabling the "All Records" tab from the WGM prefs and searching for the computer record there, within the "Computers" list. If you can find them, deleting them should allow you to add them back in normally.
    Let us know. Cheers, Joel

  • Can sites know about my computers physical address or mac address when I use firefox 4

I want to know that does firefox expose my computers mac address or physical address to any site if that tries??

You have quite a few outdated plugins installed which potentially exposes your system to exploits.
So the first thing to do is to visit the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update where necessary.
That IP address belongs to Comcast. Does that ring any bells?

  • Assigning IP's from Airport Express to specifici MAC addresses/Computers

I have two AX, one is host, other connected via WDS.
Behind that is my MacBook, on which runs a nifty AJAX based remote that is accessible from my iPhone.
I can choose to enter a local IP, or with port forwarding enabled, even the WAN IP on the proper port channel gives me access.
The only real problem is that the IP address (10.0.1.X) of the MacBook being controlled seems to change from time to time, making it rather pointless to bookmark the URLs of the AJAX remote. So.... is there a way to make it that when my Macbook (uniquely identified by MAC address I'm assuming) joins the network, it's given a specific IP address, one that can remain in my bookmarks so as to be used on a whim, without updating and preparation?

For those of us that can't afford a brand new router just for one little feature, here's a workaround.
    Get rid of DHCP.
Set all of your Macs' IP addresses manually.
This isn't as taxing as it sounds...
Go into *System Prefs*, and *Network Settings*. Double click on Airport, then open the TCP/IP tab. There you will see the following settings:
    Configure: Using DHCP
    IP Address: 192.168.1.3
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.1.1
These might not be the exact numbers you see, but remember/write down what you do see.
Change "Using DHCP" to "Manually" using the drop down menu.
Hopefully all the settings such as Subnet Mask and Router will be the same as they were before, you will be left with 0.0.0.0 in the IP Address Box. This is the address for your computer. Enter in an address similar to the one you had before, but perhaps add 5 or 10 spaces on the end... So for example 192.168.1.10 .
If the other values haven't automatically copied across, enter them exactly as they appeared before.
Finally, you need DNS Addresses. These can be found in your Airport Admin Utility under the "Internet" tab - but every single one I've ever set up seems to default to
    194.168.8.100
    194.168.4.100
Try them, if you can't connect to the internet, check your admin utility under Internet settings and copy those DNS Server addresses across.
I hope that makes sense, if not please leave a response!

  • Despite active MAC address filtering turned on, computers still connect!

I am noticing a very strange problem that I was hoping v5.7 would fix but it hasn't. I have MAC address filtering turned on, as I have a number of MAC addresses listed in my access control tab.
Despite this, macs and pc's are able to connect wirelessly to my Base Station without being listed. Has anyone else noticed this major flaw?
I used WPA2 for a bit, but it must have slowed my network down by 40% so I would certainly prefer to use MAC address filtering instead.
Perhaps I am doing something incorrectly?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott
    Macbook Pro 2.0ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

scotteeboy, Welcome to the discussion area!
I don't know why they were still able to connect but MAC address filtering is not a real security measure since it is easily defeated.
WPA2 shouldn't cut your bandwidth 40%. Did you try WPA? That is also very secure.

  • Do I need to add Base Station MAC address to list?

Hi, If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???  I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???  I doubt that address needs to be included but I would like some feedback on that.
Second, does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???  If that was the case, I would just turn off MAC address filtering why guests were present.
    thanks..  bob

If I choose to use MAC address filtering on my Airport Extreme Time Capsule, do I need to add the wireless MAC address of the Base Station to the list of allowed MAC addresses???
No. Timed Access would be for wireless devices....computers, mobile devices, printer, etc., that are connecting to the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule does not connect to itself in this regard.
I'd feel real bad if I set up a list, didn't include the base station's MAC address and then could never get in to the network again because I, in effect, locked myself out???
Sometimes, users lock themselves out by mistake by entering incorrect times for devices to connect, and they often forget that they can connect to the base station using an Ethernet connection and get back in that way.....since Timed Access only applies to devices that connect using wireless.
does the one MAC address filter list apply to the Guest Network as well if I should choose to turn it on???
    Yes

  • How do I clone my computer's MAC address on to the AE base station?

This is just driving me nuts. I've looked at responses to this question on the internet, and it appears that the Airport Extreme Base Station can't perform a function that nearly all WAN home routers have been able to perform for a decade: "cloning" a MAC Address. My internet provider uses the MAC address of one of my computers to identify a valid connection, and my old Belkin router just cloned the computer's MAC address. If the AEBS can't do that then it's a rather serious design flaw, and if I'd known that I'd never have bought the device. I noticed that there's something called a "Client ID" so I input my computer's MAC Address for that, but the Base Station still can't connect to the internet.
I don't want to have my ISP reset my valid MAC address (even if they could, which isn't clear to me) because I may need to connect to the internet directly in the event of problems... say the Base Station malfunctions.
I bought the base station so that I could connect peripherals to it, but if it can't connect to the internet that renders it practically useless.
Are there any workarounds? Anyone have any ideas?

I can see that no one is bothering to respond to this question, so I thought I'd post a resolution. I don't know if one can alter the ID of the AE Base by cloning a computer's MAC address. The next best thing would be to easily alter the MAC address that the ISP identifies as legitimate. If you have COMCAST's telephone modem (which has a battery backup so that it can't be rebooted by simply unplugging it) you can adopt the following procedure to reset the MAC address.
    1. Reset the base station, by depressing the reset button in back with a pen or paper clip.
    2. Unplug the base station.
    3. Reset the Comcast cable modem, by depressing the reset button in the back with a pen or paper clip.
    4. Plug the base station back in.
    5. Use the Airport Utility to set the parameters of Airport Extreme.
This procedure will force COMCAST to recognize the Base Station MAC Address as legitimate for provisioning.
It's not an ideal solution, but it works. If the Base Station fails and you have to use a direct connection to your computer you can follow a similar procedure to reset the modem, and recognize a new MAC address.
Again, the fact that you can't use the Base-connected drives for Time Machine is just plain dumb. Apple originally touted this as one of their main selling points, and then just backtracked. They need to reintroduce this functionality in the next update of Leopard... and it wouldn't hurt to issue an apology for having misled people. The stone wall just ****** people off, as it should.

  • Is there any way to track a stolen laptop using the mac address, or by triangulating the wifi, or even by checking to see if the macbooks serial number has been registered online anywhere?

A little info on my question,
I had it stoeln on June 22nd 2013. I had recently bought it so had not installed any software on it nor did I have registered with icloud. I had contacted police, registered it stolen with Apple (but then just discovered this week that apple do not have a database for stolen products, which makes no sense at all).
I have contacted all the major pawn shops and computer stores in town etc etc. I have recently discovered that each laptop has a unique MAC address whcih begs the question, is that traceable somehow? I have been made aware that the router strips the mac address before it connects it to the internet but does the isp log the laptops MAC address? If i contacted all the major isp in my country would they have the ability to search for the mac address of my latop and then link that with an ip address?
Any help would be great please!

    karlgporter wrote:
Yeah but I registered it stolen with Apple first thing, then called local police etc. Apple told me on the phone that the serial has been logged as stolen, which I assumed would limit the computers use online.
Every machine has a unique serial number what I was getting at is there must be some way to track the serial number and for example if the theif logged onto facebook using a stolen machine, if there were a register of stolen equipment then red flags would pop up, you know what I mean?
Well, I hadn't heard of that before. If it's true, then what you say should also be true but the Mac would have to publish its hardware serial number over the Internet and I haven't heard of that either. The only Apple tech that is supposed to constantly track you is iCloud.
You said you assumed the database would limit use online but if that's only an assumption, you need to ask Apple what exactly the stolen database does. It is possible that the serial number might only get flagged if it comes into an Apple Store for service, if it ever does. You need to clarify this with Apple.

  • Add MAC Address to Time Capsule?

    Hey everybody--
I have a MacBook Pro that connects to the Internet via a Time Capsule that is hooked up to a cable modem. I recently bought a Blu-Ray player that has a LAN port (no wireless), but it is miles away from the Time Capsule.
I would like to share my MacBook Pro's wireless Internet connection by connecting an ethernet cable between the Blu-Ray player and the MacBook Pro. I turned on Internet Sharing and selected share Airport with computers using ethernet. I tested it out by seeing if my wife's MacBook could share the connection and it worked like a charm. (I turned off her Airport card and her computer accessed the Internet via an ethernet cable between our two computers.)
Alas, the Blu-Ray player can't seem to share the connection.
The Blu-Ray player uses DHCP but tt appears to receive a self-assigned IP address.
The player manual says that if the connection fails "it may be necessary to set the MAC address of the unit at the router side."
Does anyone know what this statement could mean? Can I add a device somehow to the Time Capsule. Any other thoughts on ways to make this work?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I found this how-to on the Web. I'm not too saavy with terminal, so these things always make me a bit nervous. Anyone have any concerns about following these steps to see if it works?
The following procedure is confirmed to work as written.
Start Internet Sharing if it's not already running.
In Terminal, type cp /etc/bootpd.plist /tmp/bootpd.plist
    Stop Internet Sharing.
Open /tmp/bootpd.plist for editing using TextEdit or whatever.
Locate this section of the file, near the end:
    <key>replythresholdseconds</key>
    <integer>4</integer>
Change the value 4 to 0.
In Terminal, type sudo cp /tmp/bootpd.plist /etc
    Start Internet Sharing.
If you want to, check that your change to /etc/bootpd.plist hasn't been reverted.

  • Mac Address Book on Windows XP

I have 2 mac at home and a work computer (Dell running XP).
On my personal mac computers, my address book is full of 850+ contacts (business, friend, family, etc) and I would like to know if there is a way for me to access them from my work computer (running XP).
I don't want mobile me (too $$$) but I was looking forward to having mac address book software compatible with Windows. Is it possible?
    Thanks
    Matt

You can export all of your address book in a vCard file, which can be imported by most email applications. That isn't a constantly updated solution, but it will get you most of the information copied most easily.

  • MAC address on boot.

Since I installed my SATA HD my boot time has doubled because of Client Mac Address. Before when I started my computer it would go to the screen with the BIOS version and graphics, then the Corecell screen the it would go to the Network screen and finally the WIN XP startup.  Now it is all the same except after the network screen it goes to :
    Intel UND I PXE 2.0 (build 082)
Copyright  (shows 3 different years) Intel Corperation
VIA Rhine II Fast Eithernet Adapter
Client Mac Address  here it shows a address
    DHCP
    PXE MOF
It stays on this part for about 45sec  then it finally goes to the WIN XP startup.
DOES anyone know what this is?  Is there a way to get rid of it? I do not need the Intel Corperation screen on my computer.

That was it. Is there anything that you don't know about computers? Thanks for the help it is always appreciated.

  • WRT54G loses AP MAC address

    Hi,
With the help of support, I got the WRT54G to "work" on my desk with my wireless laptop right next to the router and the router plugged into a hub that I put on my desktop. I put the router in a closet about 15 feet away (2 plaster walls between) and plugged it into my wired ethernet switch. All lights on the WRT54G show normal operation. When I try to connect with my laptop and I look at the wireless information, it shows the AP MAC address switching between its value and 00:00:00:00:00. Obviously, I can not make a wireless connection.
My daughter also tries with her MAC laptop (5 feet from the WRT54G with no walls between) and she can not connect.
Both wireless computers can connect to my Netopia wired/wireless router which was provided by my ISP.
Is there a solution for this problem or is the WRT54G defective? (If it matters, the firmware is v 8.0.0)
    Thanks,

Try upgrading the firmware of the roruter ... Once upgrade ..reset & reconfigure the router & see if it works ....

  • Specific mac addresses?

I have an Airport Extreme base station in an upstairs closet ( with printers, dsl, security system, fire, panel, etc) and I use a couple of Airport Express to bounce the signal around downstairs. The two expresses have solid connections to the base -24 -95 but where it gets strange is getting the laptops and imacs to connect to the closest express. They always seem to link up with the express that is farthest away from them. Is there any way to set the computers to connect to a specific repeater? I can not seem to find a way to specify that a certain radio connect to a specific repeater/ mac address...

Is there any way to set the computers to connect to a specific repeater?
    Unfortunately there is not.

  • Does the ethernet adapter have a MAC address?

Hi, I wonder if anyone can answer this one for me. I use programs under bootcamp that need a 'dongle' to prevent them being used on more than one machine at once. ProE for example uses a Pluscom ethernet adaptor that carries its own unique MAC address that the license is assigned to. My question is, is the Mac ethernet adapter the same? does it have a unique address - should be six pairs of numbers / letters.
Just wondering if I could use one of the Mac adapters for this purpose.
    Thanks for any help

Yes, the Apple Ethernet adapter will have a Media Access Control (MAC) address. In general, every network adapter (NIC) will have a unique MAC address. So if your program only works with a specifc MAC address, basically you can't install the program on a different computer without contacting the software vendor for a new installation code or whatever. (More specifically, you can't change the NIC. If you change computers, you need to keep the NIC.)
In Windows, to get the MAC address, open a command prompt and type "IPCONFIG /ALL" (without the quotes.) The line that says "Physical Address" is the MAC address. Note that you may have more than one NIC. (Wired, Wi-Fi, etc.) So you need to be sure you get the appropriate MAC address for the desired NIC.
