3 Day Old Macbook Pro. Dead pixel.

I just got a MBP and it has a dead pixel near the bottom and bit off center to the left. I´ve tried just about every thing to fix it, but nothing.
I called the place we bought it, and the stupid Apple policy can only replace it if it has 5 or more dead pixels. There is literally nothing I can do? It´s the most annoying thing ever. I shouldn`t have to pay thousands of dollars to have a fault screen, even if it is just one single pixel.

hard to say, it depends on the product and how much it cost.
If this happened to me again, and was a less expensive computer, I likely wouldn't care as much. It'd still bug the heck outta me, but I'd be able to learn to deal with it.
For what macs cost, I don't have any qualms or any guilt about expecting things to be pretty much perfect. I understand there will be things slightly wrong here and there due to mass production, but when its something glaringly obvious like a stuck/dead pixel, that's where I draw the line.
And besides, there is no publicly stated rule that says it has to be 5 dead/stuck pixels before a replacement/refund. I know Apple has that knowledge base article on stuck/dead pixels, but last I checked, it didn't stipulate any rules when trying to exchange/return a computer for dead pixels.
I can't say I agree with your statement about how few LCDs are perfect. Out of the entire time I've purchased electronics, I've only encountered just 2 instances of a stuck pixel. Perhaps I've just been lucky, I don't know, but I'm seriously not kidding.
Lastly at this point, it seems absurd to still think that stuck/dead pixels are acceptable due to cost. While this might have been the case a few years ago, if cost is the big reason as to why we're supposed to accept dead/stuck pixels, how is it possible that companies like Dell can offer a guarantee on no stuck/dead pixels for their LCDs?

  • My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power

My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power it's as if the unit is completely dead. Even with the mains plugged in there is no green or orange light to say its charging or full charged. The battery was fully charged anyway seconds before the screen went off.

When you say no green or orange light are you refering to the little led on the magsafe connector?  That could mean either the charger/cable are bad or the circuitry in the MBP is faulty.  Since this is a brand new MBP best bet is to take it back to an Apple Retail store and have the genius bar staff take a look.  They can determine if it needs to be reparired or replaced.

  • Sept 2012 Macbook Pro dead pixel issue

    Hi,
My Macbook pro from Sept 2012 has recently had a major issue with pixels dying, around 10-15 in a few weeks. My Macbook is out of warranty as over a year old so I am wondering what my options are? I don't believe the dead pixels are a fault of my own as I have seen a lot of problems with this issue online.
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately dead pixels cannot be resuscitated.  The solution is a replacement of the display.
Had you purchased Apple Care, the display, if it was outside the Apple pixel display standards, may have been replaced for free.
    Ciao.

  • Three day old Macbook pro, 15" 2.8 model...I am loving the switch from PC!

Hello everyone. I just wanted to post some of my likes and dislikes of the Macbook Pro 15" 2.8 GHZ model for those searching this forum for reviews.
The computer I have is completely up-to-date, with the latest 10.6.1 OS, with Logic Express to boot. So far I have found the computer very responsive for my uses and fast. When I first received the computer, I thought it had Snow Leopard already installed. It wasn't until last night (I purchased the computer on Saturday) that I realized that I still had 10.5.7 Leopard installed. After installing Snow Leopard I am pleased to say I noticed a considerable improvement with Logic Express. Before, the computer randomly had warning pop-ups while using the software. I was a bit annoyed and did contact Apple about potential bugs with Logic. Of course, after installing Snow Leopard everything is running great.
As for the 5400 RPM drive, for my uses, it is very fast and very responsive. I don't think I will be upgrading in the future because any audio recording I do is on an external 7200 RPM hard drive. If the prices for SSD come down considerably, I may choose to upgrade my hard drive then, but for the time being I am very, very happy.
I will say that I am not as impressed with i-photo as I thought I would be. I really enjoy the easy slideshow modes that it features, but I don't find the "face-recognition" that responsive. Maybe I am doing something wrong though. As I said earlier, I am new to Mac, and have only had the computer for three days now.
I got the Anti-glare screen model as well, and let me tell you, that is the best part of the viewing experience. I don't understand how some of you out there love the glare screens. Too much reflection for my tastes and less motion-sickness. The anti-glare screen is very professional looking in my opinion as well, and does not reflect the light from the keyboard at all. Also, if you are looking to extend your battery life to the largest potential possible, the anti-glare screen is still usable with the screen dimmed. I noticed with the glare screens, the glare became very apparent when dimmed, which left me with no choice but to keep it at near-full brightness.
Fit and finish of the machine is amazing. Much better than my previous HP Pavilion DV6000!
I also bought a clear Speck hard-shell cover for the Macbook Pro too. I want to baby this computer and keep it in good shape. If I had to rate the Speck shell, I'd give it a 9-out-of-10. It works great, but allows some dust to come through, hence the 9 rating.
This laptop is also GREAT to use outdoors, in sunny conditions! I am guessing that is due to the anti-glare screen, and the highly bright, LED LCD display. I love it, and while that is cool, why use your laptop outdoors?
Anyways, so far, I am very happy with my Mac purchase. I felt obligated to write this because when I used to search these forums for advise, most of what I came across were horror stories and complaints, which really skewed and worried me. I want potential buyers to see some positives too.
PS: I have been trying to push my computer to get the dreaded beach-balling phenomenon that some users describe. I have had the beach-ball pop up, spinning in it's hyper color glory, but it lasts for the most a few seconds, and pops up when I load up a bunch of apps at once (like 6).
    Have fun and be safe!
    -Bud

    Thanks !
Great comments Bud! Glad you got a kick out of my handle. ;o) I thought is was a fitting title considering how many Macintoshes I have around here! ;o)
I am sure that you will probably encounter some "issues" with using you new MBP, but I am pretty sure it will be related to "unlearning" the Windows way of doing things! lol!
I always tell people that the best part about a Mac is OSX! 10.6 is proving to be an EXCELLENT step forward in this great OS' long history! Being kind of a techy, I know how much "under the hood" improvements this new version has going on. Many of these improvements will benefit you as a musician as you start using your machine for music related purposes. Just wait until we start seeing more support for 64 bit! :o)
As for the screen debate... Yeah, I can't understand the appeal of the "GLOSSY" screen either. I guess when you don't consider these things as a TOOL, you are more concerned with the BLING factor than you are with accuracy and useability of the device itself.
I have read a lot of very flippant remarks on here and elsewhere aimed at those complaining about the previous lack of the Matte screen option. Some saying that the percentage of users who would want that version was in the single digits. Guess they didn't see all those POLLS on photography web sites, where the percentage of those preferring a MATTE screen was in the 90+ percent range. ;o)
I would remind those "consumers", that it was "Media Professionals" that kept Apple in business during the "dark" days when everyone was predicting the demise of the Mac and Apple as a company. It was nice to see Apple finally give a nod to these "Professionals" by finally offering the Matte screen option we NEED again on their "PRO" line of laptops.
Just checked my order and see that it is PREPARED FOR SHIPMENT! :o)
My only worry is the possibility of a STUCK PIXEL. I have never had a problem with this before, but it is always something I worry about every time I buy a new machine with an LCD screen. I am hoping that the MATTE screens get a better QC going over than the Glossy models do.
Thanks again for posting your thoughts! It is always rewarding to read the impressions of a recent convert!
    Cheers. :o)

  • 2 day old MacBook Pro at 98% battery capacity

I'm a little bit concerned about the lifespan of my new MacBook Pro's battery. When i recieved the machine i performed a battery calibration as Apple recommends. I then charged and discharged again. I was concerned when Coconut battery (not always accurate) told me my battery was at 98% total capacity. Is this normal? after 2 cycles my capacity is down 2% .
I'm surprised because I've never seen this on my old iBook which usually loses 1% capacity per month.
I've read that these lithium ion batteries have a memory, that the cells not being used stop functioning because they are not needed. Is this true?
When at home should i keep the machine plugged in? My iBook used to be fine when i took it to school and drained it, then charged it at night. Opinions?

More or less, yes, I do. Actually turns 5-days old today and at 97.8% of capacity (5330 mAh compared to 5450 when new) after 4 battery loadcycles. Coconutbattery says this is 97%, but my math is a bit higher at 97.8%. Clearly this rate of decline is not sustainable.
So my question to you was, did "don't worry, enjoy" mean that in your experience, the initial few percentage points of battery capacity is blown off quickly, but the battery capacity will quickly stabilize to something that is still acceptable?
My battery on a full charge this morning (day 5 of ownership) lasted 3:50, with display at 50%, no use of the optical drive, Wifi on, bluetooth off, and running Mail, Safari, Firefox, iCal, Excel & Activity Monitor (to keep an eye on things). No work was done in Excel, Firefox or iCal, just Mail & Safari. So, I, too, am a bit concerned about being nowhere near 7 hours. Or 5 hours, for that matter. So, short battery life and losing 2.2% of capacity in 4 loadcycles and 5 days is concerning, and tempting to connect the dots.

  • 20 days old Macbook Pro in big trouble!!!!

I have been a PC user since I was born however I had heard very high about the credibility of MAC and really wanted to possess it. I was first exposed to the Apple world with iPhone 4 and was really excited after standing in a long queue in rain to possess it.
I really liked using iPhone and decided to replace all my gadgets with Apple products. I decided to gift my wife with Macbook Pro(Serial No. W803**ATM) on 17th Nov'10. I was very excited to buy another Apple product and even decided to buy an Apple TV, VGA adapter and a beautiful case for my new Mac from Apple Store ( on Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland).
The Macbook Pro was a great experience after using PC. It was very fast and very responsive and I was very proud to gift it to my wife.
Suddenly, one day i.e. 08th Dec'10, I switched on my new Macbook and I observed that the brightness of the screen is automatically getting brighter to dimmer and vice-versa also, the light of the keyboard was behaving in a similar way. I restarted it and after some time it was fine so, I thought that may be I have accidentally pressed a key that is causing it.
Next day i.e. 09th Dec'10, I got a call from my wife while I was in office that all the keys of the key board have stopped working and she is unable to enter any text or number. I again thought that may be some function of Mac that I was not aware of has accidentally been switched-on. So, I suggested her to take it to the Apple store (on Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland) and get it looked by an expert. She went to Apple store and showed it to the expert there however after a thorough examination the expert could not help and suggested that we should show it to another expert from the Genius bar and gave as an appointment for the next day in Apple Store (on Glattzentrum, Zurich, Switzerland)!!!
As soon as I came back home from office, first thing in my mind was to see the issue, to my horror all the keys were like jammed i.e. I could press the keys however nothing would happen on screen and the brightness of the display screen would fluctuate. Also, the left click turned to right click!!!
Next morning i.e. 10th Dec'10, to my surprise everything was working perfectly fine and I was totally jazzed!! However, I decided to still discuss my issue with the experts from Apple store. I told my wife to take it to Apple store (on Glattzentrum, Zurich, Switzerland) and get it looked. She went to store and narrated the whole issue to the expert and expert was able to reproduce the issue and guided us to leave the Macbook with him as he has to replace some parts. The repair number is R39582769.
I am not as proud as I was earlier infact, I am felling guilty now!!! We have been very sad and disappointed by this event and had never expected that Apple products will be so unreliable!!!
*I want to know that what is the replacement policy and why I should not be covered under this policy as I could use my new Macbook Pro for mere 20 days????*
(a not so proud Apple user)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Apple will try and repair the problem and if they fix it then all will be well; most warranties allow the supplier to firtly repair any problem rather then offer immediate replacement items. If they can't fix it, or something else happens, many have a 'three strikes and you're out' approach and will replace with a new item then - often it's up to the store manager to make this call. You are within your rights to ask for a replacement but they are within theirs to try a repair first.

  • My new 1 day old MacBook Pro keeps crashing and freezing, why is this?

I bought this yesterday. It has now started turning off, freezing on various pages, having glitches in the screen. looks like programming type appears on the screen at random times. What is wrong?

Return the machine and get a new unit. You have 14 days from date of purchase to exchange the machine or get a full refund. You obviously got a lemon - exchange it for a new machine.
    Good luck,

    Hi there,
Just bought a new Macbook pro 13, and the time, spotlight, wireless, sound bluetooth, and everything else in the top right corner of the screen are flashing and the pinwheel/beachball thing shows up when I hover over that area.
I might have a bad app that is trying to load something into that area. Any help would be helpful.
    Thanks,

  • One day old Macbook Pro issues

I just recieved my macbook yesterday and when I got home I installed vm fusion and installed a Vista64 VM and ran about 88 updates. I got up this morning and shut down the mac and brought it to the office and when I started it all I could get was the screen with the apple logo and the animation below it. It would not get past this point. I booted off a mac mini OS X disk and went to disk utility and it could not see any partition on the hard drive. What caused this and is it possible to fix it w/o my system disk that are at home? I did not think I would need them at the office.

I reinstalled the OS and everything seems to be working fine. I did not mind as I did not have anything on the laptop that I could not replace yet. I'm not sure what messed up the directory structure. This is my first Mac and really did not know what was the cause of this. But this has been a learning experience. Thanks for all the help and advise. It was allot more than the local apple store offered. I was advised by them to call Apple since this was a custom ordered macbook.

  • I have a 2 day old Macbook Pro (15") and the fan is running nonstop, is there a reason/what can I do?

It also makes some pretty concerning noises from the hardware. I've only been doing web browsing, nothing significant and no downloads. I tried doing a software update and when I went back to the updates page the one I had just done was still there. What can I do about this?

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

I gave my old MacBook Pro away and no longer have access to it. I didn't think to deauthorize it first. I DO NOT want it to have access to all music in my iCloud or any music that may have been downloaded sinceI gave away the computer. It now belongs to my teenage daughter, who has since been in my WI-FI area and knows that code. I had EVERYTHING removed from the computer before I gave it to her (long story), but since I hadn't deauthorized the Mac,I'm assuming even without the itunes password the iCloud material would had loaded onto her computer. My iCloud had somehow included personal voice mails under Unknown Artist that I did not want on there or shared. How can I deauthorize the Mac Laptop without having the machine available to do it on? Change the iTunes/iCloud password? I should now have my desktop computer, new PC (Aspire) laptop,Ipod Touch, and if possible my Evo 3D as well as my boyfriend's Samsung smartphone being able to access the iCloud account/library--whatever it is called. HELP

Thanks, I appreciate the help.  I think this is one of the problems Apple is creating by changing the OS so often. I had fomer colleagues at [a major aerospace contractor] who told me that so many original files were ultimately lost because of the deadly change in the "Save As" operation that they are now afraid of every OS update. Apple has badly damaged their support base with that very prominent company (they won't update now until they've fully examined and understand changes in the pre-conditioned nature of OS computer functions), and they are a whole lot less enthaled with Mac-related equipment/software. Can't blame them, I too used orginal files that way (as easy-to-use templates), and lost some important files before I realized what was happening (to late to revert). Companies should not have to retrain employees each time an OS gets an update, it's can be very expensive several different ways. They learned a painful lesson with that one. And because I'm now retired and don't use multiple devices, I need iCloud like I need a hole in the head... but I'm told there's no way to keep Apple out of my computer. Fortunately, because of major problems when initially installing Mountain Lion, one hold-over of the hardware/software damage I experienced was that iCloud can no longer access my computer even though everything else is working fine again. That was the only "good luck" I had as a result of that expensive nightmare.

  • How do I get Iwork08 to work after transferring my old macbook pro information to my husband's newer macbook pro?

I do I get iwork 08 to work on my husband's macbook pro?  I had an older macbook pro and he gave me his newer macbook pro.  So, I transferred all the stuff on my old macbook pro to his along with me being a new user/administrator, etc.  Now, when I try to create documents or try to print out something, iwork doesn't work, b/c I am logged on as a new user.  Help!

He did have iwork installed, but it won't work for me.  When I transferred it to myself as new user, if gave me a trial period of 30 days, I was wondering why that was.  After the 30 days,  it said that I needed to put the serial number in from the iwork boxi or if I bought it from the app store, a serial number could be given to me.  Also, if I didn't have the box or the serial number, I could buy one?  My husband got the computer in 2008 and had the iwork 08 software and installed it.  Now, I guess since it has transferred over to a new user, I have to buy another iwork just to print out anything?  I don't get it.
