3 HD's which one do I buy???

I have chosen 3 potential replacement HD's for my PB, they are as follows:
- 100.0GB Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 7K100 7200RPM 8MB Data Buffer ATA/6 9.5mm UltraSlim 2.5" NoteBook Drive
-120.0GB Western Digital "Scorpio" 5400RPM 9.5MM SuperSlim Notebook Drive with 8MB Data buffer
- 160.0GB Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 5K100 5400RPM 8MB Data Buffer ATA/6 9.5mm UltraSlim 2.5" NoteBook Drive
What I am left with is, for the same money I can get the Hitachi drives but the diff being speed (5400-7200) and storage (100 to 160GB) The WD is by far the cheapest but am I getting what I pay for?
Any comments/ideas gratefully accepted.
Thanks

> I have browsed the Apple site but cannot seem to find any criteria for maximum HD size etc. Any idea where I would find that information?
The closest I can find is this document from Apple. Based on that information, your PowerBook should be fine as the Aluminium series was not untroduced until 2003.
> Also the only cons i have read on the Hitachi/Seagate HD's is they are noisier than the OEM HD in my PB now..
All my latest Seagate and Hitachi drives are extremely quiet. Whilst they do emit noises I would not say they are noisy at all. Older Hitachi drives can be significantly noisier, which can irritate some people. However as you are buying a new drive, it should not be an issue.
All being well I would choose the 160GB Hitachi (or the Seagate equivalent). Whichever drive you choose, just make sure you order the Ultra ATA (Serial ATA is not compatible with your PB) version.

A basic MBA will be more than adequate.  Take into consideration that storage may be a long term issue unless you are not averse to traveling with an external HDD.

    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You could contact Apple Support and see if they have the original discs for that machine but it would be 10.4.11 and there's no reason not to go to at least Snow Leopard, especially since the 10.6 discs would probably cost the same as a replacement set of 10.4.11

  • I want to buy a mac and i am confused between macbook air 13 inch and i mac. which one should i buy

actually i am new to mac so i am confused between macbook air 13 inch and i mac. which one should i buy? i will be installing windows 2 on it..

An MBA is a portable while an iMac is a desktop and is not portable. You could install Windows on either provided each had sufficient memory installed and a large enough hard drive. The iMac is better equipped for this from the outset, but the MBA can be adequately configured if you are willing to spend the money to do so.

In general most macs you buy are the same. If you will be doing quite a lot of editing of photos and videos, then the big things to look for are:
Processor - 2.8ish GHz Intel i7 4-core - is about the best I have head of thus far.
RAM - fairly easy to upgrade yourself, but 16GB is typically more than you will need for the next 5 years at least.
iLife is reasonably good software for editing media, but as a photographer, you may have your own prefered software
The good thing about Apple is that they don't sell ****** computers in general. They offer little in the way of customization of hardware which is both their strength and weakness.

  • Which One Would You Buy?

Hello to All - My brother already has a 240GB Crucial M500 installed in one laptop, and now he wants to buy a new Crucial SSD around 250GB in size for another machine. He wanted to buy another M500, but they're no longer available, and he isn't too sure which one to choose from the current models. Given the choice, and regardless of price, would you choose the BX100, the MX100, or the MX200?

Thanks for your quick responses, and the link to the article on anandtech.com in particular.   ***Edited to remove Crucial competitor***

  • T7700 vs. P7800... which one should I buy???

I read in an old thread that one is better for games and the other is better for movies... but I watch movies and play games equally, so which one do you recommend me?

    I personally recommend T7700.
I mean, yeah, P7800 is a nice set of speakers, but its not as common as T7700. So if you have problems, you'll find less support for it.
Whereas T7700 is a lot more used than P7800.
    Just my personal opinoin.

  • Three Versions of a movie? Which one do I buy?

This week, the iTunes store features the 1995 Al Pacino / Robert DeNiro movie Heat on sale for $9.99.  I love this movie and so I was looking forward to buying it.  But I fell into an iTunes hole and after clicking on a number of different titles, found myself at another listing for Heat, priced at $14.99.  Confused, I searched the iTunes store for "Heat", and was surprised to see three separate listings, all at different prices, for the same movie:
Now, unlike The Heat, which has rated and unrated versions available, Heat appears to have nothing between the three editions to differentiate them.  None of them contain iTunes Extras, none of them have different runtimes or ratings.  The only things that appear to be different are price and bitrate:  $14.99 / 5.81GB ; $17.99 / 5.75 GB; $9.99 / 6.16 GB.
Likewise, another title on sale this week is Seven. It has two identical listings. One at $9.99, one at $14.99.  The $14.99 has the higher apparent bitrate; 4.79 GB vs. 4.37 GB.
So my questions is, how do you know for sure you are getting the best release available for any given movie in the iTunes store?

    Caleb,
CC2014 is a new version, which in some ways are closer to the CS versions because some features have been reintroduced.
If you are happy with CC2014 you may uninstall the others.

  • I need to buy an external hard drive for my MacBook Air as it is almost full. Which one should I buy?

There is no such thing as an Apple hard drive, ...Apples doesnt make same.
    avoid western digital if possible.
Yes, having an external HD is necessary for data backups and keeping large media files for packing around etc.
    you need data redundancy.

Most storage experts agree on the Hitachi 2.5"
Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner.

  • Which one should I buy?

    Hello All,
I am very new here and I have never used a Blackberry. I am thinking of
purchasing a Storm or the new 9000 if available in my market. I was told not to
buy the storm because it has many quirks.
    1. Does Blackberry support Microsoft programs on the device? I have always
    used a PDA with Windows.
    2. Is the keyboard accurate and easy to use?
    3. Are there any other things I should be aware of with a Blackberry?
I look forward to any responses and appreciate the help.
    EAS1

The BlackBerry runs a proprietary Operating System, not (and never) Windows.  However, you can use view and even edit standard Microsoft Office documents on the Bold.  You can't create "New" documents with the supplied "Documents to Go SE", however if you copy a blank Office document to your SD card, you can copy it to a new file and edit that to "create" a new file.
The Bold's keyboard is great!  The jury is split on how well the Storm's virtual keyboards work, but I haven't tried one personally (yet).
Be aware that you need to get the appropriate BlackBerry Data Plan for your device.  If you are not going to connect directly to a corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Server, a standard or personal BlackBerry Data Plan will suffice.  This is typically around $30/month and includes "unlimited data" and email.  I use quotes around unlimited data because that typically doesn't include tethering (using your BlackBerry as a modem to connect a computer to the Internet), but DOES include all Web browsing and communications between most applications (RIM's and 3rd party's) and the Internet.  This does NOT typically include SMS/Text messaging however.
Check with your carrier for details!
    Jerry

  • Toshiba 55TL515U vs. Vizio M550NV vs. LG 55LW6500 Which one should I buy?

They are all passive 3D TVs. I’m kind of leaning towards LG Cinema 3D since it seems like the most popular one but I want to make sure that I’m not biased towards anything. If you own any of these TVs, can you please help me out and tell me what your likes and dislikes are? I don’t mind the price, although a bundle deal would be nice. Thanks a lot.

I recommend LG Cinema 3D. I own a LW6500 of LG Cinema 3D series and it’s great. I have experiences with both Vizio and LG. I bought a Vizio passive 3D (I forgot which model because I returned it soon after) and didn’t like it at all. It’s cheap, I admit, and seems like a good deal. But I thought passive 3D TVs aren’t supposed to flicker. Well, Vizio did flicker. A LOT. I went on the Vizio website and it admits such problem and promises that it will do a firmware update soon. They did updated the firmware but the flickers didn’t go away. There was an even bigger issue: the TV would just turn off automatically in the middle of watching for no reason at all. I called Vizio and they admitted to this problem and said they would do an update. I didn’t want to wait until the update so I just returned it and got LW6500 instead. I’ve had it for a couple months now and I’m happy with it. It’s certified flicker free and I haven’t seen a single flicker on this TV. Both 2D images and 3D images look great. It came with 4 pairs of lightweight, battery free 3D glasses and I’ve tried using 3D glasses from the movie theaters and they work perfectly fine too. I can watch any 2D contents in 3D mode and the quality is good.

  • MacBookPro or G5 desktop? Which one should I buy?

I had just made the decision to invest in a new Mac. I've been using my G3 Powerbook for a few years now and it's time to upgrade. I can't even put OSX on my PB (I should be able to but can't due to various problems and instabilities - with the PB that is, not with me though that's debatable too!).
Ok, so finally, I made the decision (always hard for me) to buy a G5. It's years since I used a desktop but with 2 growing boys too needing access to a computer more and more, I thought it would be easier for them while still being easy for me, if that makes sense.
Now I see this gorgeous MacBookPro and I'm totally confused all over again! What to do, what to do...
I'm a graphic designer and would need to run Quark XPress and Photoshop.
    Some considerations....
    - Are Quark XPress and Photoshop even available for the MacBookPro yet? If not when would they be available? (I could still go on using Photoshop on the PB for a while but I'd like to start designing on my new Mac straight away i.e I'd like Quark).
    - How easy would it be to run Windows on the MBPro? I see that's one of the selling points and as my sons use Windows in school (unfortunately) and my husband uses it too it would certainly help to have both OSs on the one machine
    - Ease of access (I must admit the laptop is very handy because with three kids I work in various rooms in the house at various times. I would need to be more scheduled using a desktop
    - Ability to upgrade. I have no idea about this one and it's important to me. Whichever one I buy I'll need to use for at least 4 years as I won't have the money to go and buy another Mac for quite a while. Would the MBpro lend itself better to future OS upgrades and RAM upgrades?
    - Problems with the fact that the MBpro is a first release? Is that a consideration? Will they release the 'proper' one with any problems ironed out next year and I'm stuck with my one for 4 or 5 years? Ha!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if some of my questions sound naive. I work at home and am somewhat out of touch with technology!
    Deb

Deb, have you considered the (Intel) iMac ? It's the best of both worlds, and a 20" model will cost you less than the MBP. (I agree with you that a desktop is more suited if you have to share it with your children)
Photoshop will fly even under Rosetta compared to your G3, Quark Xpress I don't know, but should run too.
Windows XP runs very smooth with Boot Camp and it will get better with Leopard (next OS X)
My wife has a G5 iMac and doesn't plan to upgrade for a long time to come, but if she would have to buy today I would recommend the Intel based machine. It's the way Apple has headed and I don't believe they're going to look back.
    Good Luck with your choice.
    Best Regards.
