3 iMacs storing files

We have 3 iMacs & an Airport Time Capsule.
We want to store files in 1 place so all 3 iMacs an access them.
Whats the best & easiest way to do this?

Hello!
The Time Capsule has a harddrive in which you can store files. All three of your Macs can connect with it as long as they're all in the same network and subnetwork.
However, a little note from experience: all of that should work fine, but the Time Capsule HDD is meant for back-ups and not storage. So I recommend you connect a USB-Harddrive to the Time Capsule's USB port on which you can store your three Macs' files.
This HDD doesn't have to be of a particular brand, as long as it's using USB and has it's own power cable.

  • So, iDisk (great with MobileMe) is closed! Ok. I got the most expensive iCloud Plan and LOVED storing files online. Is that REALLY OVER??!! (besides Numbers', Pages', and Keynote's docs sync).. Will I REALLY have to downgrade to "free" on iCloud?!!

    So, iDisk (great with MobileMe) is closed! Ok. I got the most expensive iCloud Plan and LOVED storing files online. Is that REALLY OVER??!! (besides Numbers', Pages', and Keynote's docs sync).. Will I REALLY have to downgrade to "free" on iCloud and PAY for "DropBox", "Google Drive" or "Microsft's Sky Whatever.."?!!
    I could not log in to this Support Community with my UPDATED Apple ID (and this is another issue I can't believe Apple just says "NO, you CAN'T!" - deleting other (old) Apple IDs we've created by mistake or a long time ago and being able to have it all on ONE SINGLE UPDATED Apple ID - ALSO saving Apple's storage servers, etc.).
    Anyway, my Apple ID for better communication is [email protected] (but I really couldn't log in here - it kept saying that the e-mail is already registered, etc. I know it, I'm trying to use it here, that's all...
    So, really. Of course a lot of people don't care about the iDisk issue. That's fine, we all love and hate specific apps or software.. But why has Apple just shut it down, since it was so EASY to use (as DropBox) on all our Apple devices?!! So, we really can't upload/store any kind of files anymore and that's it?!
    I used iDisk when MobileMe was still alive, and it was great to have my files from work, home, any backup (whatever we want) uploaded and synced and used in our Macs, iPhones and iPads. If we have the OPTION of an iCloud Plan (the top one, for example), but we just don't like the automatick backups for the iPhones and iPads, nor the Pictures' sync function.. Why can't we just have the SAME simple and efficient/great service of the iDisk installed in each device?!
    Do we really have to go back and downgrade back to the free iCloud Option (just for keeping the e-mail) and paying extra for DropBox, Google, Microsoft, any other services?! I have nothing against them - I actually have DropBox and it works great because it REMINDS me of iDisk!! But WHY NOT just keep it simple and closed with 1 company/platform/option - Apple's iOS, OSX, etc.
    That's why I decided to have a Macbook Pro, an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3rd. Generation (for example, along with other products and services such as Apple TV).. I know I'm CHOOSING to stay with 1 world, that's fine. And that's why I didn't (yet) go for a Samsung phone or another tablet.. I wanna stick with 1 pattern and I have chosen Apple's..
    Just can't understand such an innovative company make such decisions (such as shutting down iDisk or not letting us just DELETE Apple IDs we do NOT use anymore).. Please, just some guidance or confirmation if that's correct: No way of uploading files others than Numbers', Pages' or Keynote's!!??
    Thank you very much!!
    Peace.

    Thank you Roger.
    That's exactly what I was afraid of...
    During all the time I have been a loyal customer of Apple's products and services, these have been the only 2 issues that I really can't understand (specially when we look at Apple's strategies and management)...
    1) Not being able to DELETE (simply delete or deactivate) old or duplicated Apple IDs... I have 3 different Apple IDs but only one is the real Apple ID I use for everything, with all my purchases and services (such as e-mail) related to it (Why won't Apple jus let people delet, deactivate or - at least - merge Apple IDs?! That would help everyone, including Apple when we think about costs, storage, database maintenance, etc.) - Actually, even when I gave up on trying to delete other Apple IDs, I tried to have the one I really use and have organized to use my @me.com address as the Apple ID itself (as Apple asks us to do - and makes sense, of course). But never worked. Just because I created that Apple ID with a @hotmail.com account (since it asks for a valid e-mail when you create an Apple ID, it NEVER lets me now change my Apple ID to my @me.com e-mail address - I mean JUST having my @me.com e-mail address as my primary e-mail and my Apple ID (for example, having that old @hotmail.com e-mail address out of it, cleaned..)!
    2) The other issue was this one, about iDisk. Of course there must be reasons for having it shut down, maybe the apps used by iPhone and iPad, along with the folder on Mac OSX, is way too complicated, expensive, full of bugs, I don't know. But if we decide to pay for 50GB of online storage, why even THINK about different options for files we use?! I have Dropbox, I've read about Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive, etc. But I just wanted to STICK with a single ALL-APPLE solution.. That is.. Pay the annual fee for the 50GB and just still keep any file I want on the cloud with iDisk. So, what Apple tells me is that if I have other files than iWork or PDF (and some few exceptions), I should actually downgrade to "free" iCloud and decide to PAY for another solution (organization), such as DropBox, Google Disk or Drive (I don't really know), Micrsoft's SkyDrive..
    Of course there's the strategy of getting more and more people to use Pages, Numbers and Keynote (buying them for iOS and Mac OSX, as I already have and love them). But "killing" iDisk and just telling users to look for other storage solutions doesn't really sound like Apple.
    I have seen so many questions here about both issues (deleting or merging Apple IDS + iDisk back since we pay for storage) that I really believe Apple should reconsider these issues or, at least, open the issue and let us know what would be the best "partner solution" for iCloud...
    Thanks a lot!
    All the best...
    Eduardo Rocha.

    I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

    How can I see the stored files in cache? I need them!
    Thanks for helping me.

    The History menu lets you revisit the page where you can drag any page element from it.
    How would you sort through thousands (tens of thousands) of files found in a cache?

    How can I verify that my App data is actually stored in the iCloud. I can see and access my notebook, contacts etc. on the iCloud website, and I can see my photos in a folder on my Windows-based desktop compter (iCloud/Photostream). But no app data.
    With Dropbox, I can actually see all of my stored files. With iCloud, it seems, I'm supposed to just trust that Apple has my back. Short of deliberately trashing my app data and then attempting a restore, is there no way to check the data?

    You can't access them on Windows (unless you have iCloud enabled Windows programs) and I don't think any are, yet.
    iCloud data is accessed via Apps/Programs, the Windows programs vendors will have to step up (just to make it worse Microsoft have not yet enabled their Mac programs, such as Office yet) I doubt that iCloud access is much of a priority for them, complain to MS, when enough Windows users complain maybe they'll do something.

  • Merging and storing files and folders on external hard drive

    Merging and storing files/folders  - I have a MacBookPro3,1 &  a MacBookAir1,1 both running OS10.6.8 and then files from backups and archives on a LaCie 250 and LaCie 500. I want to improve my productivity by merging all files/folder into one place.
    I have a WesternDigital 1T to move files/folders to and do my duplicate deletion work.
    The end result I'm seeking is to have all my files/folders stored on the LaCie 500  - with space for expanding iPhoto Library and Movies then that LaCie 500 Backed up on the 1T.   As my computers are older models the internal drives are smaller - MBA 80GB and MBP160. The Air in particular gets full up quickly and doesn't work efficiently.
    What steps/software have you had experience with, and would recommend to merge all my files/folders, delete duplicates, and get it all in one place - including iTunes, iPhoto.
    What are the pros and cons of keeping & working with files/folders on an external drive rather than on the internal drive?
    I'm aware of sluggishness in iPhoto if the library is too large, and looked into iPhoto Library Manager as an option for my photos.
    Thanks in advance for your help with this way past due Spring cleaning activity.

    Plugins have to be in specific locations for the application to load them. If you're just storing plugins you're not using you can store them anywhere.

  • Using File Browse to update stored file

    Hi all,
    I have a form with a File Browse item on it which is (surprisingly!) used to upload a file and associate with a record. The filename is stored in a varchar column in the table. This works fine when I create (INSERT) the initial record and I can retrieve the stored file just fine. However the problem I have is when I want to update the uploaded file. It seems the normal mechanisms for update / save requests don't apply to uploaded files. My other attributes get updated fine but the new uploaded filename is not reflected in the table.
    I've put together a simple example of this on a when apex.oracle.com :
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=40740
    Which has two fields, a file name and an 'attribute'. Try as I might I can't update the file name although the attribute changes just fine.
    Any suggestions will be much appreciated. I realise I may be missing something fundamental here and am more than happy to be enlightened.
    FYI, the purpose for such functionality is to allow users of our system to store a photograph of themselves along with their details. This functionality is required to allow the photograph to be updated if required.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    If i am not mistaking, using a file browser item type will not set the uploaded file (blob) in this item, to be processed in the standard processing on you're page.
    In a recent project i wrote a stored procedure for handling with uploaded files. This procedure, which based on the filename ( Fnnnn/<filename> ) , select the uploaded content through apex_application_files, the location apex saves the files. and procedure outputted the file as a blob, which then can be used to insert/update in youre table
    Hope this example code will help you:
    procedure upload_bestand( p_file_name in varchar2
    , p_file out nocopy blob
    , p_filetype out nocopy varchar2 )
    is
    -- Cursor voor bepalen bestand uit apex_application+files
    cursor c_file ( b_file_name in varchar2)
    is
    select aaf.filename
    , aaf.mime_type
    , aaf.blob_content
    from apex_application_files aaf
    where aaf.name = b_file_name
    r_file c_file%rowtype;
    begin
    open c_file ( b_file_name => p_file_name );
    fetch c_file into r_file;
    if c_file%notfound
    then
    -- Upload van bestand niet geslaagd
    close c_file;
    raise e_file_err;
    end if;
    close c_file;
    -- Geupload bestand uit temp_upload tabel verwijdern
    delete from apex_application_files
    where name = p_file_name
    commit;
    p_file := r_file.blob_content;
    p_filetype := r_file.mime_type;
    end upload_bestand;

    Hi
    Thanks this has helped me solve the problem.
    I used the Outlook Anywhere connectivity tester you suggested. Selected Outlook autodiscover.
    It told me that it could not resolve things on any of the 4 tests.
    I saw that using the last test "Attempting to contact the Autodiscover service using the DNS SRV redirect method", was the only one likely to work in my case.
    I had already changed 3 entries in dns to point at my DDNS address but this had not worked, from the errors I could see that it was just the certificate name not matching so I changed the DNS entries for Autodiscover, autoconfig and _autodiscover._tcp
    to be webmail.domain.com which is a CNAME to my ddns address for the broadband router, which in turn forwards ports 80 and 443 to the exchange server for owa and activesync access. I got an error message saying that I had an illegal entry in my SRV record
    as a CNAME is not allowed, but it saved the change anyway.
    I reran the test and it worked.I can now make new outlook clients attach teo exchange.
    Thank you, after 8 hours yesterday of trying to reolve this I suddnely got it to work on one laptop but the other still would not and had lost track of what I could have changed so had no idea what actually made it work.
    Thank you for your suggestion.

  • Can't find my stored files -

    I have an iPhoto Library on my Main computer;
    I have another iPhoto Library on an exterior drive. Although it only shows up when I search Spotlight, this external drive has the Library.iPhoto file along with a Library6.iPhoto file. and... It appears to mirror my desktop iPhoto Library that stored on the main computer exactly as I use my desktop iPhoto application. ??
    ? I can't open any folder to view the original stored files (not that I care to change them). But I used to be able to see these stored pictures in their folders?
    ? This mirroring would seem to be a great backup solution but I can't find any discussions and am now thinking there is a problem that should be fixed?
    I don't get it.
    Thanks for any ideas...

    Your files are stored in the iPhoto Library. By default this is in your Pictures Folder. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
    The Library.iPhoto file and the library6.iphoto files are elements within the Library. They are databases and contain no photos themselves.
    Iphoto has no facility to mirror itself, so I’m not sure what’s on that other drive, unless you have run some back up utility on it.
    Some FYI:
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    *If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Storing file attachments

    Hello,
    We have built a custom solution (custom objects, transactions, number ranges, UIs, etc.) to handle certain kind of requests in our SAP system. Now we would like to add file attachment functionality to our transaction(s) - in other words we want that the users will have possibility to add files as attachments when creating new requests or changing the existing ones.
    What is the best approach to handle this requirement? From user interface point of view this is not an issue. I am familiar with the different file uploading possibilities within classic dynpro and web dynpro. The question is that how to store the files and where.
    I don't think that storing the files into the SAP DB is really an option due to the large amount of large files. (I think that this would be quite easy to implement.) We have content server(s), but they have been configured as DMS - they are storing some engineering documents etc. into these content repositories.
    Would it be possible to store the documents into these DMS content repositories (if yes, how can we do it?) and make a link between the file and our documents into a custom table? As far as I understand we really cannot start using the document info record functionality for our custom objects (or perhaps we can, but it will require a quite massive work effort.)
    Or is it just the best option to configure new content repositories as type ArchiveLink, and then store the documents into these new content repositories?
    Any other options?
    Any thoughts are welcome.
    Regards,
    Pa

    Well, first I am instructed to ask this question in DMS forum. When I close this thread and open a similar one in DMS forum, I am being reported to abuse the system???

    I had an old mac book pro,using it i maually stored files on it,i sold my old mac book pro and got a new mac book pro but it cant access the old files what should i do?

    How do I begin backups again using the same Time Capsule?
    Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Turn Time Machine "ON"
    Click Select Disk
    Choose your Time Capsule
    Click Use This Disk
    The first backup will begin in a few minutes.
    If you decide to delete your old backups, do this before you back up the "new" Mac as listed above.
    Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
    Click the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase
    Choose the Quick Erase option
    Click Erase Disk
    The operation will only take a minute or two.....then, you can set up the first backup of the Mac as listed above.

    Error in Checking in & storing files :<Filename>
    Please guide through.
    Regards
    Shruti

    Hi Shruti,
    please note that DMS BAPIs require always a SAPGUI channel or open RFC
    connection to start the SAPHTTP/SAPFTP program that is used to up- or
    download files to the client. If the BAPI ist executed in background
    mode, the system doesn't know from where to get the original file.
    Please do not use BAPIs in background mode, use APIs instead. They are
    more flexible regarding RFC calls (background processing). I hope the
    SAP note 504692, which contains sample programs for special
    checkin/checkout cases could be useful for you. Please read this note and use the sample
    programs as a basis for your own coding. Further please see also note
    796709 which also might contain useful information for such cases.
    Best regards,
    Christoph

  • Updates from stored files?

    Does anyone know how to update CS3, CS4 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and 7 from stored files in:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobePatchFiles"
    and from:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Adobe"
    I have got a desktop that never goes online (I don't have Internet access at home) and I want to update it from these files on my laptop but I don't know how?  I can update laptop by taking it to college and using Wireless connection but how do I update the desktop?
    I have copied the files on a CD from the two folders but they don't execute!
    Thank you.

    You may want to look into NetStream.play() API in the
    documentations folder installed with FMS3.
    One specify the type of stream that should get played by
    NetStream.play() ; using its arguments.
    It has options of
    -only live
    -only stored
    - which ever is available.

    It would appear that you have moved your profile, or parts of it.
    In the account settings, look for the setting under ''Server Setting''s named ''Local Directory''. Is this set to your desktop?
