3 internal drives 1 wont mount

Error report says failure to exit. disc utility cant repair. is drive finished, and can I retrieve any files from drive. Is there really people out there that know about these kind of things. I thought for sure someone could answer this.

Apple never recommended anything, not to me anyway :P
And while we are on the subject: you can find a zillion sites advertising G5 Jive Wiebetech whatever bracckets, butt nobody ever bothers tto mention the powersupply can't handle it.
Even worse: I can't find anyinfo on what kind of poweersupply my mac has, it is suppose to have a 600watt one accorrding to most sites "dual G5's always come with a 600 watt power supply"
600 watt should be enought to start 3 drives, if not this would mean I could never uprade my videocard to a high-end one either. They use a lot more power then a harddisk. The only thing anyone tells you is "heating problems" but thats no problem at all: full load for 13 hours and it runs almost as quiet as before the 3 drive upgrade.

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

  • Internal Drive does not mount

    yesterday on a MacBook mark l;
after a very long MSN typed session, MSN wouldn't close and after a while I turned off MBook turning power off with long press on on/off key.
    now...
Flashing suitcase with ? mark flashing at start up
I tried all the tricks under the sun ,
    Pram (failed),
    start with Option Key (failed),
    start with X key (failed),
    soft boot (failed),
    single user boot (failed),
Disk Utility from install CD does see the drive but "Repair" tab is greyed out.
    No SMART status displayed,
tied to use Terminal from the install CD (failed)
    booting from external clone Drive via Firewire = which would not even see that internal Drive so couldn't use Disk Utility from that system either ;
tried AppleCareProtectionPlan CD - TechToolDeluxe (wouldn't mount),
what can I possibly do ? I do not have DiskWarrior.
any chances to have that internal Drive "seen" by some magic device which would at least check it and repair it so that I could erase it and apply a recent clone of it I did with SuperDuper.
    many thanks enjoy your weekend
    jacques villeneuve loubet
    I

Sorry, I seem to be a bit over your head, but worry not, I'm frequently over my own head!
a bit terrified to do something wrong
Completely understandable, I'll try to be clearer.
you say :Can you Safe boot off the external and try it again?
so I need to "Restart" my set up - then engage the SoftBoot mode while Clone's ED boots
then what do I do ?
I think I misunderstood, forget all that please.
as DU off the Clone does not "see" the MacBook Drive - neither "Activity Monitor" (Disk Usage tab) when it normally see it.
my Clone is 2 month old hence why I desperately need to access some data if I can
OK, we need a whole other tact here. If you have twice as much free space on the external, then you won;t need another external drive, ut what I recommend here, (Laptop drives are very short lived, btw), is to get these...
If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
    Or FileSalvage...
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?%20mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    to recover what you can.

  • 2nd Internal Drive Doesn't Mount

    Hello.
I own an early 2011 MacBook Pro where I've installed a 500GB Samsung SSD in the primary hard drive slot, and a 1TB HGST drive in place of the optical disk drive, which has been working wonderfully for my needs.
However, I recently had to send in my mac for a repair (after replacing all the original parts of course) and now I'm finding it impossible to get my second drive to mount after installing it in the optical disk drive bay. Here's what Disk Utility looks like after attempting to verify the disk:
The drive is recognized in Disk Utility, but the 2 partitions on the drive will not mount. When starting my mac holding alt, the partitions do appear, however, with the correct names, but cannot be booted into (prohibitory sign appears). I have successfully mounted the drive via USB, so I know nothing's wrong with it. I've also tried installing other hard drives, and none are recognized. Finally, the internal optical disk drive will read CDs, DVDs, and boot the OSX install disk, so I assume that the SATA connection is working fine.
During the repair, Apple replaced the Logic board, display, and bottom case.
    I have 3 theories:
    1. The new logic board has a faulty SATA port such that the optical disk drive will function, but a hard drive will not.
    2. The new logic board is somehow wired to not accept a second hard drive specifically.
    3. The hard drive caddy I'm using is damaged.
Does anyone have any experience with this issue or can offer any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Try initially:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and : About NVRAM and PRAM
after rechecking internally for firm connections and no proximity issues with the caddy.
Reboot to working Startup Disk and check within System Information :  Apple menu + hold Option key -> System Information -> Hardware that the drive information and partitions are correct.
If the problem persists, try : Using Apple Hardware Test
Not sure whether AHT will detect the cradle correctly but worth a check.
    See how you go, Cheers

  • 1TB WD Caviar Black SATA internal drive won't mount on desktop or Disk Util

I just installed this brand new drive in bay B of my G5 tower...it doesn't appear on the desktop, and not in Disk Utility. Can a 1 TB SATA3 drive be functional in a G5? The owner's manual only mentions a maximum 250GB (or 500GB drive, don't recall) ; maybe that was the biggest available in 2004/05?

Thanks, all. I found a link to WDC drive jumper settings (http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=1337&p_created=1112379341&p_sid=eST7ItDi&p_accessibility=0&p_red irect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NDg3J nBfcHJvZHM9MCZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX 2ZubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWp1bXBlciBzZXR0aW5ncyBzYXRh&p_li=&ptopview=1), and jumpered pins 5 and 6 to limit transfer speeds to 150 MB/s. On restart, the OS prompted me to initialize, which I did, and voila, the drive is mounted.
Question: it appears the jumper setting is to convert a SATA2 dirve to SATA1. Is there any reason to try (or jumper setting that would enable) converting my SATA 3 drive to a SATA2 configuration?

  • Log and Transfer .dmg is on hard drive but wont mount

    Hi All,
I have search the forums for a resolution to this but I couldn't find one. I am a home user for video so I will try to explain what happened as best I can.
I have a Canon Vixia HF20 and I created a disk image from disk utility and placed the image on a separate hard drive that I store all of the images on. I have done this numerous time with this camera in the past.
today I created an image as normal and opened up Final Cut Pro (7.0.3), opened up the log and transfer window, opened up the custom path window and double clicked on the image I created today. the first time I did this, the image opened and I was able to view the video in the log and transfer window. I just viewed the video, did not transfer or add anything to a queue. I then closed FCP.
This evening I tried the exact same thing, but the disk image will not load into FCP. I can see the .dmg on my hard drive, but when I try to open in in FCP to view the video, it will not load now.
Any suggestions? I have repaired permissions on my main hard drive thinking that might help. No go.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
    Kyle P

Thanks for your help goldfish. I have tried all of that to no avail. I think I found out that when I created the .dmg I somehow used the wrong path. Now when I open up the new .dmg it mounts and image of the entire hard drive with all of the slips except for the new one.
I have done some test video and imported them correctly, but I am now sure I used the wrong path. However, this still does not explain why I was able to see the video the first time I created it.
Anyway, I have no learned (NEVER) delete the video from the camera until you are sure you have the correct disk image. Thankfully the video was not important.
    Thanks again for your help.
    Kyle

  • New drives, initialized, wont mount.

after initializing in the raid admin as a raid 5, do i need to go into disk utility and partition as extended (journaled)? thanks so much, -Nick

    Hi
Simply formatting at the default format option should be enough. What I normally do after Now (RAID) initialization has finished is to restart the Server and on login it should tell you 'the volume attached needs to be initialized'. It will offer to initiliaze it for by launching DU or offer to launch DU or cancel. If you cancel you can use DU later and erase the volume.
It roughly takes 15-30 seconds to initialize the volume once it has finished the initial RAID initialization.

  • Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command   S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.

Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.
Problem started when I used Tech Tool Pro 6 to "de-fragment volume". Had to cancel that process before it finished because I ran out of time. Thereafter, when I startup my machine normally, I get the gray Apple logo at first, but it changes to a prohibited symbol (circle with a slash thru it) and hangs.
When I startup holding the Option key, I can see my internal drive, but I get the same results as above.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD, it does not find my internal drive as possible destination.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD and then run Disk Utility, it finds my drive, allows me to "repair" and says everything is fine.
When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping error message "errno = 19" and cannot stop it to do anything else.
When I startup from Disk Warrior v4.4, it does not find my internal drive to do any repairs.
When I startup from Tech Tool Pro 6 and run the "computer check" diagnostics, everything passes but the Volume Structure, which fails at "Volume Extents (B-tree)." When I use TTP's "Tools" option to run "volume repair" it will show my internal drive and allow me to click the GO button, but nothing happens and nothing changes.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive, but for as long as the internal drive doesn't mount, I can't use the backup to restore.

It's a false report and should be ignored.
I would not rely on TT as I've already said earlier even before Grant posted similar advice.
I really think the Rigid Disk Block may be corrupted. This holds the partition map and could prevent a volume from being unmounted. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix that without repartitioning the drive which will remove everything. So, before going down this road I hope you have backups or can make a backup.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.
    5. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Mounting Internal Drives

Not sure if I have the right forum for this but...It all started with one of my RAM chips getting fried. No drama, replaced it with a couple of lower value ones and back in business, except...The additional internal drives won't mount. The disk utility sees them, verifies them as being OK, but won't mount them. I don't want to format them either as I want to keep the data on them.
Also, Office seems to have disappeared and Safari (or Firefox) won't connect to the Internet. I can ping the router no problem. If I press a letter in the finder search field, finder shuts down. What the **** has happened? Do I need to re-load the OS? What about Office (which I no longer have the CD for) I'm happy to lose Office as I wasn't really using it, but I need my mail from Entourage (Unless that's gone for good).

    Re: Office
Get the freeware/donationware NeoOffice - is equivalent to Microsoft Office. It can open Excel files, Word files & PowerPoint files. You can also create these types of files that can be opened by PC users.
Download the OS 10.3 version of NeoOffice here.
    http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/olddownload.php#download
    Re: Operational Problems
You probably need to reinstall Panther. Do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
After you install the base 10.3.x, update to the final Panther version 10.3.9. See Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2464

  • PB17 internal drive spins down during bootup; computer shuts down

my internal hard drive has crashed 3 times in the last week, each time on boot-up during the grey screen spinning wheel mode. the wheel will stop spinning, and simultaneously i can hear the internal drive spin down, then the computer shuts down on its own. i am able to boot from any external bootable hard drive.
when i boot from any external drive, the internal drive does not mount. when launching the utility Drive Genius from the external drive, the internal drive still doesn't mount but does list the drive in the list of volumes/device window and does list the details of the drive. the drive is listed with its BSD name, not its DisplayName.
Drive Genius is able to DUPLICATE the internal drive, and i'm able to boot from that duplication. if i select REPAIR, Drive Genius goes thru it's process of examining but is never able to actually repair the drive. for each time that the drive has crashed, if i select the REBUILD option, even though it always reports back that it was unable to repair the drive, when finished with the report, the drive mounts automatically with the correct volume display name. i am then able to boot from the internal drive, and everything works fine...till the next crash.
Apple's disk utility hasnt been any help, although i've repaired permissions successfully after recovering from each crash.
    any thoughts?

If your drive happens to be failing, then there is nothing that any software application can do to fix it. Maybe you should boot from the Install & Restore DVD that came with your PowerBook holding down the Option key, and run Apple Hardware Test to see if that provides any insight....
Have you considered reformatting the PB's drive and reinstalling your system?
    Good luck.

  • Mounting all local hard drives before auto mounts

I have autofs configured to mount network drives at a location which is a couple of levels down inside a local, but secondary internal drive. This works fine if the local drive is already mounted, but upon rebooting the autofs locations appear to mount first then force the internal drive to be mounted at '/Volumes/Shares 1' instead of /Volumes/Shares.
    How to fix?
    Thanks.

AFAIK, you can't. However, you'll get more help at the Unix forum under OS X Technologies. For Mac OS X startup sequence, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2674 and http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPSystemS tartup/Articles/BootProcess.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20002130-BAJJBJEG for starters.

  • "Extra" Internal Hard Drives won't mount - swap, /, and /home work.

    Hello All,
*** I'm updating my post finally. Sorry it's so long, I'm not entirely sure what is and isn't relevant.
*** Also I think it's a mix up with RAID causing the issue, as I'll address below, but in case I'm wrong I wanted to include the other information that came to mind before I noticed the RAID issue (because the RAID issue doesn't make a lot of sense to me).
First off, I'm running Arch64 and KDE4 with my system up to date. Also I have Gamin installed and not FAM. I use ReiserFS on all of my partitions and drives.
I have six hard drives in my computer, all of which are SATA drives. One is a WD 150GB Raptor with my swap, /, and /home partitions on it, the other five are for extra storage on what I call my media-server (they mount to /media/media-server/1 ,2 ,and so on). They only have one partition each. Of those five the first (/media/media-server/1) is a WD 1TB drive, the other four are WD 500GB drives of identical model.
All of the Raptor's patitions, swap, /, and /home mount just fine.
On top of that the 1TB drive mounts just fine. But the four 500GB drives will not mount at all. They show up in Dolphin, Disk Utility, KwikDisk, KDiskFree, and Partition Manager. However, their size is not shown and/or marked N/A, except in Partition Manager, where their size is shown. They are not seen by 'df'.
    Output from 'df':
    df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    udev 10M 308K 9.7M 4% /dev
    /dev/sda2 25G 7.7G 17G 32% /
    none 4.0G 0 4.0G 0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda3 112G 90G 22G 81% /home
    /dev/sdb1 932G 919G 13G 99% /media/media-server/1
*** As for removable media, it's being a bit odd. When I first wrote this post removable media, specifically USB flash drives and SD media cards mounted fine. A while after that they'd show up in Device Notifier, but wouldn't mount. Just a little while ago they wouldn't show up in Device Notifier and wouldn't mount. Now they show up fine and mount fine again. This is possibly unrelated, I'm not sure.
Depending on what method I try to mount my hard drives I either get an 'only root can mount that' error or else a HAL drive busy or already mounted error, followed by a 'drive is not mounted' error when I use umount to double check.
*** Permissions are working better now , Dolphin isn't giving me the 'only root can mount' errors anymore. Still can't mount the drives though.
All of this output is from when the drives are listed in /etc/fstab:
    Konsole output:
    mount /dev/sdf1
mount: only root can mount /dev/sdf1 on /media/media-server/5
    sudo mount /dev/sdf1
mount: /dev/sdf1 already mounted or /media/media-server/5 busy
    umount /dev/sdf1
umount: /dev/sdf1 is not mounted (according to mtab)
    sudo umount /dev/sdf1
    umount: /dev/sdf1: not mounted
    Dolphin output:
An error occurred while accessing 'MediaServer5', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.PermissionDenied: Device /dev/sdf1 is listed in /etc/fstab. Refusing to mount.
Device Notifier output (pops up when I try to mount the drives in Dolphin):
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.PermissionDenied: Device /dev/sdf1 is listed in /etc/fstab. Refusing to mount.
    Partition Manager:
The file system on partition /dev/sdf1 could not be mounted.
    Details
    ==========================================================================================
    Command: mount -v /dev/sdf1 /media/media-server/5

mount: /dev/sdf1 already mounted or /media/media-server/5 busy
mount: you didn't specify a filesystem type for /dev/sdf1
    I will try type reiserfs
At boot, when the daemons are starting I get:

mount: /dev/sde1 already mounted or /media/media-server/4 busy
mount: /dev/sdf1 already mounted or /media/media-server/5 busy
This is from when the drives are not listed in /etc/fstab:
    Dolphin output:
An error occurred while accessing 'MediaServer5', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.InterfaceLocked: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked
Device Notifier output (pops up when I try to mount the drives in Dolphin):
An error occurred while accessing 'MediaServer5', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.InterfaceLocked: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked
I have tried listing (with the UUID method and the /dev method) and not listing the drives in /etc/fstab, and I have 'hal' and 'dbus' daemons in /etc/rc.conf (and I've tried using only the hal daemon and not the dbus in /etc/rc.conf). I've also tried not listing 'hal', 'dbus', and 'kdm' and only booting to terminal and then mounting the drives manually, that doesn't work either.
Here is my /etc/fstab (back to using UUID's):

I attempted to add the other drives to /etc/mtab but they get overwritten upon a reboot. I've drived mounting the drives from konsole and dolphin.
All my drives used to work. At one point I had Chakra installed and had this issue after an update, however after thinking about it the problem may have actually started after the power flashed on and off here. I couldn't fix it so I installed Arch64 and KDE4 (the normal KDE from the Arch repos, not KDEMod) thinking maybe it was a Chakra specific issue. That fixed it at the time. It later happened on my Arch install. I reinstalled Arch again and the issue was gone. However the issue is back. Again I think it was after a power outage/flash but it was also after an update that included a kernel update. Best I can remember each time it's happened has been after a kernel update and power flash. So I can't say for sure which is the cause.
Oddly though if I boot from a live disc (in my case a Chakra Live DVD) I can mount and access all of the drives just fine.
Another oddity, is that in 'Disk Utility' (palimpsest) there is a 1.5TB RAID-5 array listed. The only thing I can figure is that that is what is making the individual drives busy.
Here's a screenshot from Disk Utility of the RAID-5 array:
    http://theavataroftime.com/sites/defaul … enshot.png
After talking to a friend I remembered that quite a while back (over a year) we had messed around trying to setup a RAID array and dual boot WindowsXP. However, we never could get it working quite right, not even just in Linux without dual booting. I really can't say what all we did/tried, it's been too long. I realize that's not much help but...
Anyway I'm pretty certain I deleted everything RAID related at the time and turned it off. However I must be mistaken or I guess the array wouldn't be showing up.
I apologize, I really know nothing about RAID or RAID controllers. I do have an onboard RAID controller, but it's not a full fledged hardware RAID controller. It's onboard, but doesn't have it's on proccessor like good hardware RAID would. Or that's the way I understand it. Perhaps 'hybrid' is the proper term?
I checked in BIOS and my onboard RAID controller is off.
I take it that my attempts at setting up a RAID array before are still in the MBR (on that note I use GRUB and have never used LILO)? That's the only place I can think of that any leftover RAID configurations wouldn't have been wiped during reinstalling and reformatting the drives and partitions? I've reformatted my drives completely and changed the size of swap, /, and /home on several occasions since then, as well as formatting the media-server drives to ReiserFS (not sure what FS I was using when trying to setup RAID before. Perhaps FAT32 since I was trying to dual boot).
I clicked the stop array button in Disk utility, and then all the options except start array went away. Then I clicked start, and instead of my four media-server drives being listed at the side of Dolphin there was one 1.4TB drive. I rebooted and now it's back to the 4 500GB media-server drives.
I'm worried about losing a bunch of data, so I'm hesitant to start experimenting. How should I go about getting rid of the remnants of the RAID array safely?
Also here's a screenshot of MediaServer5 from Disk Utility. The other 500GB drives have the same info minus the names and labels of course:
    http://theavataroftime.com/sites/defaul … enshot.png
*** I had forgotten about dmesg output. It's quite long so instead of copying it, here's a link to it:
    http://theavataroftime.com/sites/defaul … /dmesg.txt
Thanks for advice on the matter.

  • Internal hard drive won't mount

First off, thanks in advance to any who offer help with my frustrating problem.
It would appear that my primary drive has come unmounted and will not remount. Yesterday I went to upgrade Corel Painter. The computer hung up when I launched the installer so I walked away from it for a few hours. Upon returning I found a screen telling me I had to restart. After the first restart I was looking at a Darwin command prompt (I don't know Unix, so this didn't help!). I restarted again and got the grey apple screen and a blue screen for a long time. I finally booted up from the OS X disc.
After unintentionally installing Tiger on my secondary internal drive I ran Disk Utility. My primary drive shows up in the left hand window, but greyed out. When I verify or repair the disk it tells me it passed verification and does not need to be repaired. When I try to mount the disk, it says "the disk cannot be mounted"
Looking at the additional info gives me this:
    Name : Hard Drive
    Type : Volume
    Disk Identifier : disk0s2
    Mount Point : Not mounted
File System : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Connection Bus : ATA
    Partition Type : Apple_HFS
    Device Tree : mac-io/ata-4@1f000/@0:2
    Writable : Yes
    Universal Unique Identifier : 0D681EDE-DA84-3486-AC05-16F7794AC9BA
    Capacity : 28.0 GB (30,020,235,264 Bytes)
    Owners Enabled : No
Can Turn Owners Off : Yes
    Can Be Formatted : Yes
    Bootable : Yes
    Supports Journaling : Yes
    Journaled : No
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
    Disk Number : 0
    Partition Number : 2
I just don't understand what happened. This is the first trouble I've had since using OS X so I am lost in how to troubleshoot it. Any input would be great. I am a dummy and haven't backed up my drive in over 6 months so I am quite sad over this.

    G4 450 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Have you tried mounting the partition from the command line? Even if it doesn't work, the command line sometimes gives more informative error messages. As a variation, the hint below describes how mounting a drive as "read-only" may sometimes succeed where a regular "read & write" mount might fail. If successful, it should be possible to pull files off for backup.

In another approach, if you have an external drive that is big enough to hold the entire unmountable partition (or if your secondary partition has the free space), it might be possible to use "Disk Utility.app" to create a disk image of the whole partition - try selecting the icon for the unmounted partition in the left panel, then click the "New Image" button in the toolbar. After going through various prompts, it should create a disk image called disk0s2.dmg. I have read that it is sometimes possible to mount a disk image of an unmountable disk created using this process (unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a link).

  • Internal Hard Drive will not mount -- need help!

My Mac Dual 450 has been a constant problem since I installed Tiger several weeks ago. There have been crashes every day. Disk First Aid did not help. Then I discovered I had TechTool Deluxe which I had gotten from Apple a few months ago. It has diagnostics for just about everything you can think of. I tried it. Big mistake.
Everything came out OK except it said there were some bad blocks, and an invalid BTree node size 8.0 (whatever that is). I tried to get it to repair the HD and it said it could not, that the HD was not mounted (I had booted from TechTool disk). Then I tried to reboot from the internal HD and I got a big bad black box saying that I had to restart. I tried that many times and kept getting the message. I booted from the Apple Tiger install disk and tried to run Disk First Aid on my HD but it said there were problems and Disk First Aid could not correct them because the HD was not mounted. I tried this and the TechTools Disk many times. Same result.
I then booted from an external system 9.2.2 HD and tried to use the Disk First Aid on that. Same result: it said the Macintosh HD (my internal) was not mounted so Disk First Aid could not repair it.
I have tried everything I could think of (option-boot, C-boot, etc) and nothing will let me boot from the internal HD or even mount it. I spent quite a bit of time with AppleCare rep and he could not succeed in getting the HD to mount.
He suggested either trying Disc Warrior which I do not have, or possibly resetting the PMU on the logic board and he sent me instructions for that, which seem ominous to say the least. And I doubt that it would solve my problem since the computer sees the HD, it just can't mount it. Resetting the PMU seems to be for computers that can't see the HD and won't start. But mine does just fine with other start-up disks.
Are there any suggestions on what else I can try? Is there a program that can be downloaded that mounts hard drives?
My Mac Dual 450 has 1.25 gb of RAM.
Thanks for any help. I need it fast.

Thank you for your suggestions and your continuing interest in trying to solve my problem. I rebooted with CMD + S and got the black screen with white text. Unfortunately I could not type anything on it. I typed /sbin/fsck -y and hit return. Nothing showed on the screen. I waited awhile in case this was one of those situations where it is hidden. But nothing happened. I tried the whole sequence a couple more times and same thing: I was unable to type anything that would show up on the screen.
Am I missing something here? I tried typing holding down various keys and could not get anything to register.
For what it is worth, the last line that showed on the screen is "panic. We are hanging here..."
I do not think that is related to what I typed since it was there when the screen first appeared, but could it nonetheless have somethng to do with my computer or hard drive?
I am right now installing system X.4 onto an external HD. If I can get that to boot and work OK, I can just use that for awhile until I get the internal either replaced or repaired.
If you see my previous posts, I had a devil of a time installing system X.4 to begin with. Maybe my HD was troubled all this time??? Or could there be some other underlying problem with my Dual 450? I suppose I will find out when I try to boot from the external.
Incidentally, I have an external HD with 9.2.2 on it and have had no trouble booting from it or using it.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Internal hard drive does not mount in disk utility

My internal hard drive no longer mounts in Disk Utility. It is grayed out. I have extraordinarily frequent spinning beach ball/freezes, in Safari or Apple Mail. The most recent symptom: upon rebooting or just starting up, I see flashing black on the display. This has been occuring for more than six months. Of course, I have made total and frequent backup's. I bought new RAM, but have not yet installed it, and I susect this might help. I have done repeted troubleshooting many times each:  Apple's Disk Doctor, Repaired Permissions, Reinstalled the Mac OS, safe boot, Alsoft's Disk Warrior, Apple's longer Harware Test, etc. I have worked as a new user, too. All tests done report that all is well. What od you thnk the problem is? Must I drive 1.5 hrs. each way to the Genius Bar at my nearest Apple Store? Might I try to erase the hard drive as a fix? I hate to do this, only as a last resort, as it is so time-consuming. Should I just update my Mac OS? Please advise, out there, if anyone can offer any advice, I would be greatly appreciative.

The list of issues you posted probably would not get shorter if you attempt to 'upgrade them' away, as usually that kind of effort is not effective yet may expose more of the same problems while not necessarily revealing the original weakness. Another OS X installed over a set of problems seldom helps.
How full is the hard disk drive? If it is too full, or has been very busy in use several years, it may be time to replace the HDD and perhaps put a larger capacity one in the computer. And if the main computer hardware checks out OK (tested under a variety of duration and stress tests) then also consider a RAM upgrade if the device is not already at the maximum capacity.
When was the last time the hard disk drive was devoid of content, maybe wiped -- erased and reformatted by a third party disk utility or have a utility overwrite the entire HDD with zeros? This used to be a common tech service in the course of a major effort to restore a Mac. Or Defragment?
If you can do the latter, this could help resolve bad sectors and remove old data or corruption on the hard drive. Or get a new HDD and before committing a new OS X install & apps to it (or a re-clone of a complete backup) test the drive and be sure it is ready for use. Not all new drives are perfectly ready; some need to get exercise first.
I'd bet on a new hard disk drive of larger capacity (also note spin RPM rate and data speeds) and a full RAM upgrade.
If you have a backup clone on an external hard disk drive (in a boot-capable enclosure) you could really go to town and before you erase the main/only hard drive, make a backup clone and test its ability to boot the Mac. Or put the old drive and content in a suitable boot capable enclosure of the kind with its own power supply, and deal with it later.
    Then consider a later version OS X -- whatever most recent version that model can support... {edited}
    Good luck & happy computing!
