I intend to buy an AirPort extreme, but 3 ports lan is not enough. Can i use a  any specificatios?
Another question: my houve is big and i want to extend the wifi. Can i extend win another AP extreme by ethernet, so i cant lose sinal strengh?

but 3 ports lan is not enough. Can i use a  any specificatios?
You can add an Ethernet switch if you need more connections. They come in 5-port, 8-port, 16-port, etc versions.
Something like this, for example:

Yes. Apple has instructions to do this here:

  • After installation, the mobo LAN port is not working? urgent, help ple

I just installed archlinux on my new i7 860 Asus p7p55d-e Deluxe build, but after the installation the LAN port is not working anymore. Before this, this Lan port works perfect in windows as well as in the arch installation. But after the installation, the led is orange and is blinking slowly, windows complains that the cable is not properly plugged, and even arch installation can't pull DHCP from it also.
Luckily, the mobo has another lan port, so I have to plug the cable out and to the second port, but I couldn't seem to be able to find anyway to enable the first Lan port anymore?
Have you seen anything like this, what possibly is the reason?
Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

heleos, thanks for the reply, the first thing I check is BIOS. There is definitely nothing wrong with that, since I loaded the default one.
It is really strange, it seems no matter what I do, the 1st port which used to work, simple doesn't work, but the second one works fine.
But after some poking around with the "ethtool", it starts to work again. I have no idea what cause the disfunction and what magically heal it again.
    Now I am really curious.

  • W7 PCs on router LAN port can not find Wireless connected OJ Pro 8500A Plus following router upgrade

My Broadband Supplier has replaced my internet router with a new one with dual N band Wireless and GigE LAN ports. The 8500A printer has been successfully WPA wirelessly connected and works fine with a wireless connected Sony windows 7 laptop and Apple devices.  However neither of the Dell LAN connected windows 7 desktop PCs or the same Sony laptop when connected to a LAN port on the router can find the printer.  I have tried reinstalling the printer software with the latest version from the HP site OJ8500_A910_1315 and the installation fails as network environment checker can not find the printer. I have run the HP network diagnostics with both firewalls in the PC and router disabled with no success. The LAN itself seems to be working OK as the PCs can see each other, exchange files and and can access the internet.  The router has been checked by the broadband supplier technical uupport.  The printer is visible as a network connected device in Windows explorer so you would expect the HP software to see it. Is the only option to fix the printers IP address and use that in the installion procedure or are there other settings I can alter to get the HP network environment checker to work properly?  Thoughts would be appreciated.
    This question was solved.

In the router settings look for "wireless isolation", "AP isolation" or the like and make sure it is DISABLED.  This setting disables communication between the wired and wireless clients.

  • Wireless is coming through a LAN port

Just got broadband, and there tech support has done something to my computer that now my wireless signal comes through a lan port and not the wireless port.
Anyone know how to fix this?

The whole story is a little bit confusing for me. How you know that you are on WLAN now?
If you are on WLAN remove the LAN cable from the laptop and test connection to the Internet. Otherway disable WLAN card using FN+F8 key combination (or just using WLAN switch) and connect LAN cable again. You should be able to use Internet as before.
Maybe you have LAN and WLAN connectivity at the same time and you are a little bit confused now.

  • Not enough Ethernet ports

Airport Extreme only provides three Ethernet LAN ports, which is not enough. Is it possible to daisychain an Airport Extreme to another Airport Extreme? If so, how?
    Thanks.

I assume that an Ethernet "hub" is the same thing as an Ethernet "switch"?
No, that is not the case. A hub splits up or divides the available bandwidth among connected devices. So, if you have 4 devices connected, each device would receive 1/4 of the available bandwidth.
A switch delivers full bandwidth to each connected device.....much better performance. For that reason, a switch was traditionally quite a bit more expensive that a hub. Luckily, that is not the case any longer. For a $10-15 dollar premium, you can get a Gigabit Ethernet switch, instead of a hub.
am I also correct that in order to get Gigabit Ethernet from the Extreme and/or the hub (or switch), I will first have to be sure that my modem isoutputting via Gigabit Ethernet?
I doubt that you can find a Gigiabit Ethernet modem. Even if you could, your signal is only going to be as "fast" as the plan that your provider will allow.  Typically, that might be 20 Mbps.......while Gigabit is 1,000 Mbps.
The advantage to having Gigabit speeds on your "local" or "private" network is that file transfers or copies between devices will occur much more quickly.
Your Internet connection will never be any faster than your plan allows.

  • RMI firewall issue - opening port 1099 is not enough

    Hello,
We have a distributed java desktop app that uses RMI with callbacks to communicate amongst the clients. It all works really well at our dev site and at 2 trial sites.
We are about to deploy out to more customer sites - so I have been doing more testing with firewalls etc and discovered some issues. Our customers are small businesses and typically have between 1 and 10 desktop clients that connect to the server via RMI. These customers are "very NOT technical", so we need to give them set-and-forget firewalls etc.
This is all on a LAN, with RMI using port 1099. On the firewalls (of the various PCs) we open ports 1099 (RMI) and 5432 (for the Postgres DB).
Also, I was using "CurrPorts" and "SmartSniff" to monitor the traffic at each PC - so I had a reasonable view of proceedings.
Basically, opening port 1099 on the server is necessary, but it is NOT ENOUGH. The RMI moves off to ports other than 1099, and the server firewall does not allow the connection.
    Procedure ...
    (1) start the "server" app - which starts the RMI registry - the "localhost" desktop app also starts and it works well to both the database and the RMI.
    (2) start another client - it connects to the DB Server, but NOT the RMI server.
    (3) open the server firewall to all traffic for a few seconds - then the client connects successfully.
From CurrPort logging I could watch the RMI comms progress over those first few minutes ...
Initially the comms do include port 1099 on the initial call to the server, but there after there are always 2 or 3 "channels" open, but not to 1099.
I notice that the Postgres DB keeps using port 5432 for all of its active channels - so it does not have the same firewall issue.
After we have opened the firewall for a few seconds - to enable the link - then we can turn the client on and off and the client re-connects without issue - so it would seem to be only an issue with the initial connection.
I am sure that this is all completely standard and correct RMI behavior.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Can RMI be "forced" to always use port 1099 for connections, and not move to other ports? (like the database uses 5432)
    2. Are there any suggestions for getting around this seemingly standard RMI behaviour?
    Other comments ...
The firewall lets me open individual ports (say 1099) - BUT I can not justify opening ALL ports.
The firewall lets me open all ports to an application, say "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe", but that app will occasionally change at a customer's site as they will update their java version and suddenly our app will stop working.
    Any guidance is appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    -Damian

    1. Can RMI be "forced" to always use port 1099 for connectionsYes. Export all your servers on the same port. See UnicastRemoteObject constructor that takes an int, or UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject(int). If the RMI Registry is a separate process you can't re-use 1099 for this purpose, but see below.
    2. Are there any suggestions for getting around this seemingly standard RMI behaviour?Yes. Start the RMI Registry in the same JVM as the code, then you only need to use 1099 for everything.
If you are using server socket factories, make sure they have an equals() method, or use the same instance for all remote objects.

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Equium M50 will not recognise the LAN port - error: Network Cable unplugged

I own a Toshiba Equium M50 and have problems with the Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller.
I used to connect via an 'ADDON' Modem/ADSL Switch and had no problems. I then replaced the ADDON with a 'NETGEAR' DG834G ADSL Modem/Router to gain the wireless port, and since then my machine will not recognise the LAN port. <error: Network Cable unplugged>.
I know that the cables are OK as I used them with other laptops and had no trouble. I can also plug in a PCI card to connect without any problems. It looks to me as if the Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller has a problem with the netgear Modem/Router.
Anyone out there with a similar experience and some advice/suggestions?
    PLEASE

    Hi
For me it doesnt show like a LAN card problem but your router is a problem.
Check the device manager if the LAN card was properly recognized. If there are no yellow exclamation marks so everything is ok!
You can try to delete the LAN card from the device manager and after new reboot install the LAN driver again.
The issue has stared after installing or connecting the new Netgear modem router.
Therefore I would recommend to checking firstly the settings or to update the firmware on this router.

  • When I plug in external hard drive to airport express it tells me not enough power for the usb port. I have the airport express plugged in to power

Airport express tells me not enough power to usb port for hard drive.
I do have power to Airport express plugged in.

The AirPort Express will not support a hard drive....only a printer.
If you need to connect a hard drive, you need an AirPort Extreme, not an AirPort Express.

  • Not enough memory error when disconnecting device on a virtual com port

I maintain a large application that collects data from many data source channels (using coustom hardware read thru a conventional COM port) and I am adding a GPS data source on a USB port using a virtual COM port driver. The application runs 24/7/365 and works well including the GPS data, if undisturbed. However, the application needs to tolerate a physical disconnect and reconnect of the GPS device without user intervention.  When I disconnect the GPS, the application becomes unresponsive most of the time (the mouse responds and other programs that are open on the desktop work fine). I abstracted the serial code and made a separate vi (below) for testing.  When I disconnect the GPS from the COM port, I get a "Not enough memory to complete this operation" message 9 out of 10 times and the vi is unresponsive until I clear the error message (the tenth time it continues working). I built the vi this way to collect data continuously. I suspect that this is the problem with the full app but I don't see the Not enough memory message there and therefore the full app does not respond and must be terminated via Task Manager. The full app runs full screen mode.
The LV app runs on Windows XP and LabView 7.0 (the client doesn't want to upgrade).
I have tried probing the error message lines at all points in the vi but they don't show anything when the 'Not enough memory' message occurs (they show the expected device not found error after clearing the error message).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
    Mel

First, there likley WAS human intervention that caused the GPS device to be removed.  That wont happen when you lock the device inside a cabinet with the rest of the test system.  Physical access control first!  If someone goes and mucks with your experiment setup while its running, that's a "poor Labratory procedure" not a "new software requirement"
I think he was meaning to say without user intervention on the software side.
I have seen odd behavior if you disconnect from a com port whilst LV still has the port open.   There are a couple things I myself woud try, being the experimenting type that I am.  Perhaps setting up a com port check to see if it has a valid connection before polling for data. If not then a blank case or some other generic code.
The issue with this would be if it became disconnected while LV was polling data.  Hard to get around this condition.  Is there a way that the cause of the of the connect/disconnect (whether human or otherwise) could be set up so that a signal can be sent to the controlling system (pre-disconnect and post-connect) to trigger an event to handle the software side?  A simple signal switch or something.  Just thinking out loud. Withoug knowing all the particulars, it's hard to make detailed recommendations.

  • Windows (XP) not receiving IP address from LAN port on Airport Extreme

I have a DSL modem connected to the AEBS WAN port. Three computers (one Windows laptop, one emac, and one powerbook) can successfully connect to the internet wirelessly through the AEBS. The remaining desktop PC, running Windows XP, normally connects to the LAN port on the AEBS and there are no problems.
Suddenly, the desktop (always configured to get ip addresses automatically using DHCP) is not getting an IP address from the AEBS. I've confirmed this via IPconfig, and the address is 169..... The Windows error message is "limited or no connectivity."
When the desktop is connected directly to the DSL modem, however, it works just fine. Of course this isn't a satisfactory fix, as it means the DSL modem is no longer connected to the AEBS WAN port, and none of the wireless computers have internet access.
I've determined that the problem is not in the LAN port itself, as my powerbook successfully connects via ethernet through the AEBS LAN port.
I've also updated the AEBS firmware to 5.7.
Any suggestions on how to fix this. As I mentioned, the problem occurred overnight.

Try using System Restore to set the computer back to a time when it was working.

  • Port not enough?

Is the port on my macbook not enough to run a portable external drive? it came with a power supply, but says it is not needed. Should I use it?

    Kane513 wrote:

Not always. Some USB devices are a little bit out of spec and require more power than a standard USB port is capable of delivering. That's why some USB drives come with Y cables with a power only plug and/or with an external power supply port.
I've got a Simpletech drive that needs both plugs in the Y-cable for any of my Mac notebooks to mount or even show up in System Profiler. I don't have an external power supply to try out the power port.

  • LAN ports not working but wireless is fine

Just purchased AE to use with my Zoom comcast modem (no router function on the modem).  The wireless function is working flawlessly but I am not able to get IP addresses to hardware attached to the AE via the LAN ports.  I've cycled and reset until I'm blue in the face!  Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

There are no settings to check. The Ethernet ports are enabled by default when the AirPort is operating correctly.
As a last resort, you could reset the AirPort back to default settings and then set it up again if you have the time.  Hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort for 8-10 seconds and release, than allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart.  Then, set it up again and check the Ethernet ports.
I assume that you have checked to make sure that you have a good Ethernet cable.

  • U3011t - Not enough power to USB ports

We are working with a U3011t and before this past Friday all the ports on the monitor worked.  After doing re-imaging the computer, I am now receiving an error message that states there is not enough power to supply the USB ports.  Any Ideas why this is?

The monitor USB hub is simply a receiver when the USB upstream cable is connected from the bottom of the monitor to a USB port on the computer.
The monitor USB hub should appear in the Device Manager. When I connected the U3011 USB upstream cable to my Alienware M18x-R1 blue USB 3.0 port, the Device Manager- Universal Serial Bus controllers added =
    Renesas Electronics USB 2.0 Hub
    Renesas Electronics USB 2.0 Hub
    USB Mass Storage Device
Reconnect the monitor USB upstream cable to the monitor port. Then, connect the other end of our monitor USB upstream cable to every computer USB port and re-test. Also, test the monitor on another computer. If available, test another USB upstream cable. The ones from any printer will work.

  • Not enough memory to complete this remote panel operation (LAN)

Hi, the problem is, when i try to view or control an application thru a simple LAN, at my work, i recibe the message "Not enough memory to complete this operation"... but both PCs are very closely... So,
are there limitations related to the amount of data involving in this kind of comminications?, my app process data acquired by a 4472 dsa PXI card, and then show results thru typical graphics...
Also, i have noted when i perform "control tasks", they have a bad effect on my app (in the server machine), in terms of performance.
The problems of excessive memory consumption can be avoided, when we used conventional PCs ?  and, ¿The monitoring and the control affect my application performance?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Ankita, i will read that document now...
I work with a conventional PC and a PXI (8175). The problem is when i try to see the remote front panel thru a LAN, my application and the Remote Panel crashes, and the messages is "Not enough memory to complete this remote panel operation....". So, my question is, if it is posible to  avoid this kind of problems? or remote panels are limited to a little apps... My App acquire a lot of data (thru a DSA 4472 daq) and then it process and shows that data without problems until remote panel is activated.
Sorry my english... and thanks anyway
