3 loud beeps when trying to start - won't start up

apple macbook wont start up and just give 3 loud beeps - then stops and does same again  grey screen whilst trying

Hi Niel, my problem is a little different. I had an error message to restart while checking emails.  When I tried to reboot, computer will not start and Beeps 3 times continuously.  I reset the ram but it didn't make a difference. It is a fairly old 20" early 2009 iMac that I upgraded to snow leopard a few months ago.  Is it time for a new one?

  • Red line and beeps when trying to apply Audio Filters in FCE

I'm using FCE 4.0.1 and am getting red line and beeps when trying to apply Audio Filters. I have rendered the files. No problems with audio otherwise.

Just as a point of clarification, you stated that you were "getting red line and beeps when trying to apply Audio Filters"  Did you mean when you applied audio filters?  Or just when you were trying to apply them?
What is the format, sampling rate and bit depth of the audio?   Does it happen just with certain filters or with any filters applied?

  • 3 loud beeps when I try to start MacBook Pro

Backed up my MacBook pro running snow leopard.  trashed a bunch of old files.  everything was running fine.
    I shut down and restarted.
It makes the tone but no apple icon.  Then three  loud beeps over and over.  Sounds scary.
Never had this before.  What does it mean?  It sounds serious.
    Thank you,,
    Patrice

    Hi Patrice,
That usually indicates a problem with RAM.
Try troubleshootingthe RAM. Shut down. Disconnect power adapter and remove battery. If the RAM youhave installed is not the RAM provided by Apple, remove that RAM and installthe Apple-supplied RAM. If you don't have the Apple-supplied RAM, or youalready have the Apple-supplied RAM installed, remove one module, try booting, move that module to the other slot, try booting, repeat with other module.
Ifneither RAM module works in either slot, then there are almost certainly otherhardware issues (usually the logic board, which covers a plethora ofpossibilities; unfortunately, the fix for almost any LB issue is to replace theentire LB), as the odds of both RAM modules and/or both slots being faulty areextremely low (but possible).

  • Won't wake up and beeps when trying to

After my computer has been asleep for a while, and I try to wake it up, it will not wake up. Instead, the screen remains black and a loud beeping occurs. I let the beeping go on, thinking it will end, but it doesn't. The only way I can get my computer to work is to turn the power off on the power strip I have my computer plugged into, then turn it back on and turn on my computer. It seems to be fine after that. Can anyone tell me what the beeping means and how to fix this? Thank You!

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Loud beep when restarting.

Earlier today, I was in class and everything was running a bit slow on my Macbook. So I shut it down and about an hour later when I was back home I turned it on and it made a loud Beep. Then whenever I restart it makes the optical drive little sound like when waking from sleep and then the sleep indicator light flashes really fast. Then it makes a loud beep sound and starts booting. Also has my indicator light on the power cord always been red?
    Thanks

i have no idea what is happening but if there is a apple store nearby they can take a look at it.

  • Not restarting; loud beeping when attempting to restart

I was running a DVD on my macbook when it froze. after doing everything I could to restart it (force quit, trying to eject the disc, etc.), I shut down my computer to restart it. Now every time I try to turn it on, it goes to the gray screen (without the apple sign), and makes a loud beeping noise I've never heard a Mac make, only PCs. It beeps three times, then pauses, then repeats. It does this if I'm running on battery or if it's plugged into the power adapter.
Is there some way I can eject the disc? Would this help? Or is this beyond my (poor) computer skills and do I need to take it in to the experts?

See Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2. You may want to run the diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

  • Loud Beep when TM Drive plugged in

I usually plug in my Time Machine Drive every night and back up my computer. Last night when I went to do it, I plugged in the 500 GB USB drive and when I did, I got a loud beep out of my computer and the harddrives didn't show up on the computer. When I unplugged it, I got the same beep. I tried rebooting the computer and the drive with the same results. Any idea what's wrong and if it's the computer or the drive?

When you get the beep, check the system logs. Run console.app to access them.
If the drive is USB and powered from the computer, it may be that the transient is doing something to the 5v power on your computer.
The best way to do what you want is to leave the drive connected (when you resolve the issue) and simply turn TM on and off with the TM switch.
Also, after you boot, run the System Profiler and check the Diagnostics.

  • Why does Firefox not acknowledge that I have Silverlight already installed. When trying to work with "Getting Started" in Windows 7, it keeps telling me I have to download Silverlight to view this information.

I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 7 OS. When trying to learn the transition experience from Windows XP to this new OS version, I was presented with this problem of going around in circles.
When trying to view "Discover Windows 7" via "Start>Getting Started>Discover Windows 7", a Microsoft website opens to; (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/videos/personalizing-your-pc). It tells me; To view this contents, please install Microsoft Silverlight. Once I install it and get back to this page, I get the same message. I can not view any of the help content before installing Microsoft Silverlight. So now it is a never ending "CIRCLE of LIGHT"! Is this a problem with my Firefox or with Windows Microsoft 7?

I'm not seeing the Silverlight plugin in your More system details list, so Firefox doesn't find it if you have it.
I assume that you also do not see it in Tools > Add-ons > Plugins ?

    Hello Everyone,
Until about a week ago users in my office who print to a networked LaserJet 1320tn were able to print to it. I'm starting to think you may need to reinstall OS X using the Archive and Install option.
    Before that, try these:

  • The Tale of the Beeping Macbook - AKA- My Macbook Pro keeps beeping when trying to boot into Snow Leopard Disc's disk utility

Quick back story:  about a month ago my macbook was falling and I caught it quickly, I had a game controller in my hand and it lightly hit it whilst I was catching it; the laptop made no contact with the floor, couch etc.  Upon reveling in my epic matrix esque catch I noticed it was beeping and the screen was completely black - Horrified I held down the power button for a forced power down and then turned it back on to see that it was fine, along with no visible scars, dents etc to the chassis.  Now flash forward to present day, and the macbook pro is only two months old (bought may 4th 2011) and I notice it's got some slightly irregular slow loading points when loading a browser, photoshop, etc.  I do the standard disk utility to verify the disc and it says
    "Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 537095 instead of 537096)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 161641 instead of 161640)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
So I put in the snow leopard disc to go to the disk utility within, reboot the laptop, and it goes to the gray boot screen with the dark gray apple logo and stays there whilst doing the aforementioned beep from my spider-sense catch.  Does anyone happen to know what is wrong?  Would that tiny tap from my controller when catching it have caused this problem I have now?  Is there anything I can do at home to fix this since I can't get to the disk utility on the snow leopard disk?  Will Batman ever get out of the Joker's trap?  Or am I better off just making a genius bar appointment?  Thanks in advance.
    -ZRS

Are you using the Snow Leopard disc that came with that Mac?  A gray disc that came with a different Mac won't boot yours, and a Retail (white) disc with a version of OSX earlier than the one your Mac came with won't boot it, either.
If you don't have the right disc, do you have an external HD, or can you borrow one?
(By the way, your post shows you're running Tiger; you might want to update that.)

  • 3 beeps when trying to install, but ram is fine

I installed bootcamp and removed my OSX partitlon to install Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro.  Currently the machine is running Windows 8 without any problems but I want to install OSX again.  BUT when i put in my OSX install disk and it tries to load , i get 3 long beeps and it does nothing.
I've read about the "3 beeps of death" referring to memory issues but is there another reason why this would happen?

You're trying to boot the computer from a Mac OS X version too old for it.

  • Default beep when trying to restore CS5

Whenever I minimize CS5, this keeps happening to me. I try clicking on the PS icon in the taskbar (I use Windows 7, by the way), I get the "deafult beep" sound and the program wont open.
I end up having to right click the icon and restore it like so:
I've noticed this only seems to happen when I have a file open within PS. It also restores by left clicking if I hold down shift as well (which I could deal with, but I have a tablet laptop, so I don't have access to my keyboard while I'm drawing).
The same problem arises when I have PS open, but files within it are minimized. I hear the default beep and it won't open, so I end up having to right click and restore too.
Does anyone happen to know why this is happening? I have a feeling it's something very obvious that I just can't figure out.

Well, sounds definitely like some issue with your tablet thing. The beep would mean that the system interprets your click as being in an invalid area. I'd check the pen sensitivity settings and in particular whether there are some specioal functrions assigend to it. Also make sure to have the latest driver.

  • Three beeps when trying to install snow leopard

    Hello there,
I bought a MBP early 2011 on ebay but it has a problem, it gets stuck on a white screen with the apple logo and a spinning wheel. so i decided to buy a new hdd and os x snow leopard. when i try to intall snow leopars onto my computer, the MBP beeps 3 times, i did a research and looks like its a ram problem, but i try my rams on my pc and they did work. so i would like to know how can i fix this problem and could it be caused by the worng os x, i have os x 10.6.3 ( bought it from apple). do you guys think i need a newer os x. thank you in andvance.

Look up your computer on the everymac.com web site and find its exact specifications, including supported OS versions.  Early 2011 model sounds too late for Snow Leopard to me and will require whatever was current at the time.  It could well be one of these models capable of booting to the Internet (though you may have to deal with Apple about resetting the owner AppleID).
On the RAM, maybe it is good, especially if you find the error was the OS version.  Even if it wasn't, trying in a PC is not nessarily the diagnostic test.  I recall reading Macs can be more picky about RAM.
    on this webgae it says
    Pre-Installed MacOS:
    X 10.6.6 (10J3210)
