3 Main Issues with my 80gb Classic

I recently purchased a new 80gb iPod Classic to replace my 40gb 4G iPod for a trip I'm on over thanksgiving. Everything synced on it and I saw no issues with it when I was at home, until I was listening to it on the airplane.
First I was listening to Meteora by Linkin Park and certain tracks that I wanted to listen to would not play all and they would just skip to the next track. I've also tried to listen to the track through a playlist that I had put it on but it did the same thing! Now the track plays just fine in iTunes and on my 2G Shuffle and on my 4G iPod, but it just refuses to play on the classic. I've tried resetting it and doing what I can being away from my computer. I don't know if other tracks on the iPod are doing the same thing, I hope they aren't.
Second is an issue I think just about everyone is having and that is with Cover Flow. I would like to use this feature on the Classic but I have no clue how it organizes albums. It seems that it organizes by Album and artist instead of Album and Album artist. If this is normal behavior I would like to know and if there's any detail in the album sorting list that I could do to make it better organized.
Third is problem of using the search feature for music. For instance I can enter "link" and it'll show that I have 5 albums for Linkin Park. In that sense it works just fine but when I click on it is when the problem starts. Instead of showing me the artist or song with that in the field, it loads up all 5,000+ tracks that are on my iPod starting with Blindside when they have nothing to do with "link".
Those are my main 3 issues that I'm having with my Classic and I would like to get them resolved online before I go to the Apple Store when I get home from vacation. It's only a week old so I know I shouldn't have any problems with them at the store, I just want to try to avoid long lines and hassle. I also have minor issues with not all the album art loading up on the iPod from iTunes but I'm sure that's an easy fix.
Also I have my iPod syncing with my PC which is running WinXP Home SP2 and the most current version of iTunes. I just have it set up on that since the HDD is much larger then my PowerBook. Also I plan on getting an iMac in Dec/Jan.
Thanks for the tips

RE: "just went and converted the song..." what format were you using when it didn't work, and what format did you convert it to?
Believe it or not, all the tracks were mp3 files at 128k and only two of the tracks on the entire album wouldn't play. So all I did was convert the two songs into mp3 at 192k and they play just fine. Really it doesn't make any sense at all on what the issue was and how it was resolved. Basically it wouldn't play an mp3 so I made a new mp3 of the same file.
update
Well most of my issues have been resolved thanks to the new firmware except for the Cover Flow problem. I know I don't have to use that feature I would just like to use it and having it organize my albums correctly would be a plus.
On a side note I do have to complain about the clicking thing they made now when you change volume or tracks or just for touching the wheel in general. I wouldn't mind it if I could just have it on the iPod speaker only, but the fact they make you do both is what's annoying. So for once I actually have it turned off and feels weird to use it without the clicking.

Have checked device sync settings and it is entire music library and their is plenty of space on ipod to accommodate - have restarted both itunes and the computer and disconnected and reconnected ipod to no avail.
Running itunes on Window machine under W8.1 and ipod software is 1.12

Thanks planb77. Your instructions worked but I had to do a little more than you stated. I did not realize that transferring files to a new computer was not enough. When the iPod synced I was told I needed to "authorize" my new computer to get my iTunes purchases to sync to the iPod. So after the initial sync, I ejected and disconnected the iPod, went into the iTunes store, set up "home sharing" and then authorized the new computer. When that was done I reconnected the iPod and was able to sync all my books and music. The only thing I couldn't do was rename the iPod as iTunes never asked me to. Is there a way to rename it after it has been set by iTunes as "owner's iPod"?

  • Machine restarting when i trya dn sync with new 80GB Classic

I've recently purchased a new 80GB ipod classic. When i tried to sync it for the first couple of times it got to about 3,500 songs and then restarted the machine. This happened twice, and even though it said it got about halfway through my library there was nothing on the ipod.
Now it'll sync for about 5 minutes and copy stuff onto the device, but it will then restart the machine. I've ran checks on all hardware and can't find a problem. I've also update itunes to the latest version, and checked for any software updates for the device itself but can't see anything
Does anyone have any idea's. I had absolutely no problems with my 5th gen ipod, and that seems to work fine.

So I made an appointment at my local Apple store and was basically told, sorry, we don't know how to help you. He retored my iPod--since that was the only solution he could come up with. Yes, it erases everthing, but there didn't seem to be any other solution. He said there have been a lot of problems with the new iTunes, but this was the first time he had heard of this particular problem. Interestingly, the Apple store has not upgraded to the new iTunes, they are still operating on the older one.
So my iPod (and iTunes) worked well for a few days after I retored, but now iTunes is once again freezing. I don't think I'm going to connect it again until they sort this out. It took forever to reload everything back on my iPod after the retore!

  • A very strange issue with my Ipod Classic

    Hello everyone
    Well I have a Ipod Classic 160gb
all this time I was using it and was so flawlessly,
but 4 days ago, suddenly when I connect the Ipod into Itunes and listened some songs for a while, I go to the Ipod in the windows explorer, open it and then happened, my Itunes stop playing songs and show a error when it tried to play songs (is like they were deleted), so I go to check the Ipod in windows and for my surprise when I tried to get into the Itunes folder appeared a error message saying "Insert Disc In Unit I:\" (this happen with all my others folders inside the ipod), so I look at the properties and showed me that I had 90GB used and 58GB free, then I decided disconnect the Ipod and see if it plays songs well or if it's corrupted.
Since then the Ipod plays songs so badly, don't play some songs skips another ones, got freeze, and every time I plug it into a PC I can't see my folders inside the Ipod, but is able to plays songs perfectly in Itunes, provided i don't open the Ipod in Windows Explorer.
I need recover about 50gb of data of the Ipod (not the music)
but in the worse of the cases I want my Ipod play the songs well, (I already tried to restore but always have an error)
Please Help me I think the data still is ok but i don't know what to do, I don't wanna lose it.
(Note: I always connect the ipod in disk mode).
PS: Sorry about my bad english.

When you connect the iPod in Disk Mode, it will be a external hardisk to Windows. So if  the iPod filesystem is corrupted due to a dying hardisk, you may get missing folder in WinExplorer or some strange behavior.
Do the iPod  Disk Diagnostic as posted by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help in troubleshooting.
Why do you need to connect in Disk Mode and play songs in Windows Explorer? Dont your iTunes library have those songs?

  • Problem with Black 80gb Classic.. Please read on

    Hi all,

I had to do the reseting method (Hold toggle, select and menu thing) and i had to restore it on itunes. can someone explain this and please tell me this is normal
TY ALL FOR SUCH A GOOD DISCUSSION

You'll probably have to either RMA your system to MSI, or have al local repair shop reprogram your BIOS for you.  I'm facing the same situation with my system, because I followed the procedures listed by MSI on the BIOS update page.  Come to find out, they had neglected to post instructions that current BIOS versions between 700 and 708 would need to be flashed with an intermediate version prior to flashing 717.  The best part about the whole thing, they didn't update their update page with this information, or the intermediate BIOS file, until the day after my system was bricked.  Now I get to pay shipping and insurance to ship my system to them, and be without it for 3+ weeks, because of their neglect.  Yay...  I probably should've stayed with ASUS.  lol

  • All of you who use the 80gb ipod classic and have problems with it freezing and syncing with itunes...well I have joined the club. This is a serious issue with apple and they need to correct it. I have tried everything to no avial.

This is beyond frustrating. I just wasted 70 dollars between a new battery and gas for my ipod 80gb classic. It was having major issues syncing and freezing with itunes. I tried everything possible and noticed that a lot of people have been having the same issues with their ipod classics as well. I must have restored it several times and now it just totally bit the dust. Now I have to shell out 130 dollars to send it in to apple to be rebuilt/fixed. This is nonsense and I just cant believe apple isn't doing anything to address this issue. My ipod was doing great for about nearly 5 years and now  this. I even down-graded to itunes 10.7, but by the time I had it set up to try, that's when my ipod totally failed and will not even come on. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • That Syncing feeling - 80gb classic

Have upgraded to iTunes 7.6.2.9 and now when I plug in the iPod, it fails to appear in the Source panel at left of iTunes, or to sync.
It's connected to the computer OK, because I can use "disconnect hardware" to get permission to unplug - which the iPod sees; and iTunes saw it and said it needed to Restore. I did this and it's wiped all the music from the iPod; but still no sync and nothing appears in the source pane.
Was working fine previously; I had synced several times without problems.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

You are not alone Roger. I've been fighting with my 80GB Classic for about a week now. At first, I thought it was the iPod. I took it to the Apple Store yesterday and they hooked it to a Macbook running windows and it performed like a dream. The guy at the Bar put it into Disk Mode first thing, Restored it, synced 400+ tracks to it, played a few then Restored it again. I brought it home and immediately started getting the same error messages. I don't know what it's issue it. I've even rebuilt my entire iTunes library on a secondary partition that had windows installed.. thinking I could trick it into thinking it's a different computer. It's hit and miss, but I keep getting the -48 error message. I think there's something in iTunes 7.6.2.9 that has changed my computer in some way. I uninstalled that version, deleted everything I could find with library files, etc on it... and installed 7.5 with no success. There is SOMETHING there that is causing this problem and it's apparently messing with our iPods. I'm trying a full sync in Disk Mode now.... Hopefully it works. *crosses fingers*

  • WinPE and FullOS Issues with Disk Numbers

So, I seem to have run into an issue where I'm trying to image up an HP Z15 laptop and it has dual HDD's in
it.  While imaging it seems to just die after it boots into the full OS and try's to configure the SCCM Client. I've narrowed down the issue to the secondary HDD causing the issue. The Main drive is a SSD that's 256GB, and the additional drive in the
    DVD-Rom Bay is a 750 GB drive.
When booting into WinPE Disk 0 is the SSD and Disk 1 is the 750GB. I can partition these
up just fine in PE, but when it flips to the full OS, the drive numbers change, and then the 750 GB drive where the _SMSTASKSequence folder is located is no longer accessible until it's assigned a driver letter. I was able to look in WinPE and the driver are
created correctly and look correct with drive letters and all, but once that reboot happens I was reading the PNP takes over and decides whatever it wants each disk number to be.
I know someone will say something about the drivers, I've checked those and downloaded the latest drivers from
HP for this model and nothing has changed. I've also seen where some have suggested that it's best to partition and format the main drive, then wait until in the full OS to format and partition the other drive but I need to find a way to find out which drive
    # isn't formatted so that I can automate this.  Part of the main issue with this whole thing is the fact that the encryption software we are using doesn't allow for a drive to be partitioned and formatted after it's installed. I'm able to image the system
up fine if I disable the secondary HDD and then just format it when the image is complete.
Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    >>"once that reboot happens I was reading the PNP takes over and decides whatever it wants each disk number to be."
Where were you reading this from? Logs? Is there any information in smsts.log?
    >>"the _SMSTASKSequence folder is located is no longer accessible until it's assigned a driver letter"
If you reboot the computer after you assign a drive letter, does the disk still have a drive letter? If that is the case, you could try to add a startup diskpart script to assign a drive letter.
    Best Regards,

  • IPod classic issues with iTunes 9 just may be disk problems in ipod

I have done extensive testing for several days now on this iTunes 9 issue with iPod Classics. I used 3 different computers, 1 Macbook Pro, Windows 7 and XP with iTunes 8. I had 2 - ipod classic 80GB and 2 - ipod 5th Generation 30GB units people gave me to look at.
It would take too much typing to describe all the restores, syncs, formats, copies I did over the past few days.
Bottom line: Using PC utilities I began to believe the iPod hard drives had bad sectors. I trusted the disk testing because I got different results from different ipods. The problems I experienced and what I have read here are consistent with what you would expect from disk problems and S.M.A.R.T. technology on the drives.
If bad sectors on a drive are dealt with by S.M.A.R.T. I would expect delays in accessing those sectors to occur.. resulting in delays to restore, delays to sync, delays to even skip songs on the ipod itself.
What may be the case is switching to iTunes 9, discovers when it trys to use the bad sectors. Maybe iTunes 9 is more timing temperamental. I have iPods that pass all disk tests that work fine with iTunes 9 on mac and PC. The other 2 ipods reporting bad sectors on a disk test, can restore, but syncing 3000+ songs is nearly impossible. Sync delays were consistent with where I would expect bad sectors to exist in the process. Delays I noticed just copying a folder to the ipod in disk mode were consistent with the delays that occur syncing in iTunes.

    It is a possibility...
I will state though that in my opinion the main problem is that itunes 9 is far less fault tolerant than prior versions and is far more likely to preemptively send an ipod into recovery mode when running into a problem when a ipod is plugged in.
I'd had a couple of incidents in prior versions of itunes when it flashed an alert message that it was having trouble accessing the ipod. Usually unplugging and reconnecting the ipod resolved the issue. Unfortunately this system of handling the issue does not work at all with itunes 9. What happens is that the next time you plug in the ipod it is preemptively sent into recovery mode.
I've had my ipod sent into recovery mode 7-8 times since I Installed Itunes 9. The last 5 of those in the last week. I've already done the reinstall itunes 9 from scratch and I still had to do a recovery of the ipod last night. Today I bought a new interface cable on the theory that my old cable might be defective. I've been able to plug it in tonight without itunes complaining about being unable to access the ipod

  • Problem with 80GB classic it won't be recognised on itunes or my computer

My girlfriend told me that her pod had suddenly stopped working on her and was telling her that she had to restore it within her itunes, when she tried this the computer wouldn't recognise that there was even anything there. Later trying the same ipod on my computer i found that it wouldn't recognise the device on there either. I've heard alot of things about the 80GB classics suddenly stopping working when itunes is updated is this the same problem?

I'm having the same problem. Been struggling to get 80gb Ipod Classic to work with Windows XP. I've gone through 4 Ipod Restores, and just when I think it's stable, some new issue rears it's head. Initially, I was convinced that I had a corrupted Itunes library, as eventually during a sync, Itunes would get stuck on some random file, and I would have to pre-emptively disconnect. Eventually, this would corrupt the database files on my Ipod, and it would start up fine, but say it had no content on it (but with, say, 60gb free). So I cleared my library and database files (my documents > my music). started from scratch basically. Since doing this, syncing has been fine for the past month...Now (started two days ago), connecting my Ipod to my computer, Itunes won't see it. On the Ipod, it shows "Do not disconnect" screen, and then "Ok to Disconnect" screen immediately. Last night, I experimented, connecting and disconnecting the Ipod to my computer, and eventually Itunes did recognize it (seems hit-or-miss), but then during the sync it eventually got stuck syncing a file, and I had to pre-emptively disconnect. Luckily, it did not erase/screw up the library on my Ipod.
Another issue, I have is that Podcasts, never show in the outermost Main menu. The only way to access podcasts on my Ipod Classic, is to put them all in a playlist. Any one else with this problem?

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • ITunes 11.2 sync issues with ipod classic 160gig

I have many Macs, and I have had issues in the past with my iPod classic 160 gig not being fully recognized by my main computer (MacBookPro 17") running itunes 11.2 and OS 10.6. Basically itunes freezes just after my ipod comes up on the sidebar, I can open force quit and itunes is not responding. I have tried using other cables and it doesn't help. I'd like to wipe the drive but I don't know if it is possible without connecting to a computer and all of mine won't initialize it.
What can I do to even start over and load all my music over again?

I figured out how to put it in recovery mode and I'm starting over, this ipod is more work than it's worth.
