3 months old MBP & hard drive crashes - Does Apple really cares????
3 months old MBP hard drive simply crash and died on me, when sent to Apple centre the lady only concern is why didn't I purchase a apple care protection plan. Telling me other failures may result in costly replacement of parts and long lead time after warranty period. It seems to me Apple really cares is to make money and more of it.
I have been using PCs all my life, when the whole world was trying to stop me from getting a MAC. I went ahead believing that Apple have taken steps to improve their product. All my previous laptops works perfertly fine for at least 3 years. My reasoning is MBP cannot be such a lousy product that cannot last that long. Or is Apple confirming the truth that their MACs will not last their users anything more than 1 year thus encouraging users to buy additonal warranty.
The question is "Is Apple product so unreliable that we have to buy additional protection plan from day 1"
I hope some one can give me some answers, it is not about the money but the data that stores inside that has become too damaging for my business.
"Is Apple product so unreliable that we have to buy additional protection plan from day 1"
By no means. Don't take some salesperson's attempt to push AppleCare on you as any indication other than her personal opinion. Sometimes things break. It's unfortunate, but it happens. If things didn't fail, we wouldn't need warranties at all. And with electronic devices it's more likely to happen early in their life than it would be later. I might point out that Apple buys hard drives from the same companies that every other computer manufacturer does, so the hard drives have exactly the same chance of failure in a Mac as they would have in any other computer. And you have a one-year warranty on your computer so having the extended warranty at this point is irrelevant.
s Apple confirming the truth that their MACs will not last their users anything more than 1 year thus encouraging users to buy additonal warranty.
No more than any other company that sells an extended warranty for their product is saying that. If you want to purchase an extended warranty, it's up to you. The majority of computer owners, for almost any brand, never have need for a warranty at all, much less an extended warranty. But out-of-warranty repairs can be expensive enough - and again, this is true of any computer, particularly laptop computers where the components tend to be more expensive - that many people opt for extended warranties to ensure that for the duration of the extended warranty there will be no unexpected failures and consequent costs. It's like buying fire insurance for your house; the likelihood that your house will catch fire is small, but the cost involved if you don't have insurance is so great that I'd wager you do indeed have fire insurance if you own a house.
it is not about the money but the data that stores inside that has become too damaging for my business.
That's why you make backups. Any hard drive can fail. Or your laptop might get lost or stolen which would of course not be Apple's fault nor the fault of any of their component suppliers.

Old computer hard drive crashed
My old laptops hard drive crashed and was not salvagable, I was able to get all my music onto my new laptop though. How do I get my iTunes account on my new laptop so I dont lose all my apps, notes, data, ect. so I will still have everything on this computer for when I upgrade the phone.
Open iTunes on your new laptop and sign in with your Apple ID and password.
You should sync your existing iPhone whether or not you intend to upgrade it. When you connect your iPhone to the new laptop, iTunes will ask if you want to "transfer purchases". Select that option.
Make sure your iTunes Library contains all the music you want. Next time you sync your iPhone, all your imported music will go along with it.
"Notes, data, etc" is a bit cryptic though. If you used iCloud, your data will be available on iCloud.
The right way to plan for disaster recovery like yours is to back up your computer before it crashes, and the iPhone is not designed for that task.
Should you find it necessary, ASC contributor turingtest2 posted this comprehensive guide to recovering your iTunes library:

Shouldn't Apple be better quality than this? I've used my old MBP from 2006 for 5 years with no problems. I've only had to back up data maybe once a year because it was so durable.
But this 2011 MBP had the hitachi 320gb SATA drive and one day it started clicking and everything froze. I immediately shut it down took it to the Apple Store, in which the genius bar guy said there was nothing they could do other than swap out the drive (which I did myself as I was not prepared to be charged $250+ for services and waste 2-3 weeks as my warranty was 1 month overdue). Even with AppleCare coverage, Apple will still not recover the data...
This is ridiculous! I strictly use the MBP for school/no gaming/haven't dropped it or moved it around rigorously/bought it instore (assuming it was handled properly). There is no reason for being such crap quality at $1300. I took it to a data recovery center and get this, the quote was $1700 as the read/write heads were defective and the surface of the disk was scratched, I could buy a new computer with that money! Were there no quality checks for these drives? I have PC laptops at home and none of them has had that problem! I'm planning to dispute this with Apple for losing years worth of valuable data.
Does anyone have the same problem? Are early 2011 MBPs prone to hard drive failures? As Ogel stated drives fail. Unless you bought your 2011 Mac right when the early 2011 models came out you still should be under the one year warranty. They came out at the end of Febuary.
So that drive should be covered, dependinig on when you bought your Mac. And they offer a extended warranty which if you had purchased it would cover the drive failure, Hardware not data.
As far as the data, Apple includes the Time Machine program and there are 2, that I know of, cloning programs available to backup your data. If you did not use any of those programs you will ALWAYS LOSE YOUR DATA.
That is a fact of computers. They fail, end of story. Unless you have multiple copies of your files you are going to lose them.
Good Luck. -
Less then 2 month oldThinkpad Yoga Hard Drive crash, over a month for new HD to be sent out
My Daughter's thinkpad yoga HD crashed on friday. Called technical support and were told a new HD and technician would be delivered on Monday. Monday came and wasn't delivered, called back and was told it would be here in 3 days. Called back today and have been told 11/28 at this point. Has anyone else experienced this issue? We bought the warrenty and now it is not being honored. She is a freshman in college and can't do until the 28th without here computer. They refuse to send a new laptop. This is some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced.
Same for me, MacBook bought in December 2006 in Germany with 2 GHz Processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB hard drive,
first drive crashed in december 2007, second drive just crashed in november 2008,
both drives were the Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00
now the replaced drive is again a Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00
I asked the Apple Service Center to put in a drive of another brand (I would pay the difference to the drive covered by the Apple Warranty Program) but Apple said they could only put in the HTS541616J9SA00 drive, otherwise I would need to pay the entire price of a different hard drive of my choice.
After doing some research on the internet, the Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 seems to be a good hard drive, no known issues of premature breakdowns.
I have used many Apple and Windows notebooks since 1995 and never experienced a drive crashing after less than one year. Now I have repeated drive crashs in the same Apple notebook.
Since the drive model seems to be OK, I really have a suspicion of a hardware bug in the MacBook. -
1 day old mbp, hard drive crackle normal?
I've been waiting to pick up a MBP for several weeks now and last night I finally bit the bullet.
I've read about the whine issues, heat issues and crackling speakers that some have experienced.
Last night when running updates, I noticed that the hard drive crackles/buzzes when reading/writing. I know hearing the hard drive is normal but the sound isn't of the drive spinning but more of a scratchy irregular buzz.
Noise only happens when access the HD, like starting apps...it's just that I've never heard anything similar, I'm used to hearing hard drives whine while they spin.
Only way I can explain the sound would be it's similar to the sound effects in movies when a spider would crawl around the floor, but only in 2 seconds spurts.
Maybe I'm just paranoid because I love the machine but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts...btw if i remember correctly it's a week 17 machine.
-gabeSound is normal. Certain drives are louder then others, the ones that Apple uses are known to be particularly loud. It shouldn't be regular at all but instead a sporadic sounds whenever the drive is written to or read from. If the sound does become noticeably louder or changes its pattern, it could be an indication of a drive failure. If you are worried about the status of your drive, you can check the SMART status, which will inform you on the drives overall health.

Old imac hard drive crashed... how to put ipod tunes into new imac's itunes
I'm sure this is something that's been revisited a number of times already... My "old" imac (2 years old -- yes I'm ****** but let's not go there) hard drive ceased living. I literally lost everything (had all data backed up, whew!).
Anyway, how can I put my itunes library, which is on my ipod, onto my new itunes on my new imac?
Thanks in advance for your help, CraigYou can't do this using regular Apple software (it's designed to work in one direction only). However if you Google "transfer from ipod to itunes" several helpful links come up with utilities you can download to do this.
But if you have protected music on your iPod, do remember to "authorise"" your new HD first. -
One month old MBP Retina - have crashed five times
Hey. I'm new to mac OSX and I've never owned a mac before. I decided to buy the new Macbook Pro retina (base model). It have crashed five times since I bought it, which kindof defeats the purpose of me buying a mac in the first place. It CANT crash, since I use it for music production and when I DJ live.
Should I link the crash report when it crashes the next time? I've sent the crash to apple, but if it's simular to "Send to Microsoft", I don't expect any help.
What do you think I should do? Reinstall mac OSX could help, or do you think an upgrade to Mountain lion may help? If I should reinstall mac OSX, how do I do? It's not like I installation disc, nor DVD reader.
Best regards Jack Hellberg.
PS. Sorry for poor english. Thanks for the quick answer. I think this is the crash report:

Likely hard drive crash and apple support question
Hello, I have a late 2009 Macbook that has been reliable up until a few days ago. It started to randomly freeze up and I was forced to manually restart. Yesterday, it started freezing after signing in, making it unusable. I tried safe booting but this also ended up freezing. I managed to back up some data through recovery mode and tried to repair the HD with disk utility. It said it worked the first time but the Mac continued to freeze. I tried to repair again and it said that it couldn't do it. Now the macbook only boots in recovery mode, whether I want it to or not. I'm not entirely sure but I think the HD might be crashing/has crashed? Or does this sound like something else?
I plan to take it in to be repaired but I'd like to know a bit about what to expect if I take it to an apple store. I'm guessing they would take it in to see what they could do and then contact me when they had news? If the hard drive has failed and needed to be replaced, is my late 2009 macbook something they would still do that for? Obviously any apple care I had for this has expired so any estimates what this might cost?
A lot of info and questions I know, but I'd appreciate any input!
Thank you.Try asking DriveSavers to recover the data.

Which hard drive brands does Apple use in the iMac G5?
I am wanting to replace the Western Digital hd that came in my iMac G5. I know that some iMacs have Maxtor hds built in and yet others Hitachi drives.
I was wondering whether anoyone has a Seagate drive...I usually use Seagates, however I was told they are running really hot. Not what you need in an iMac G5.
My WDC drive usually runs at 52.5C...how hot is yours running?
Cheers,
JurgenHi Rod,
Since Coriolis have open tickets with both Apple and WDC, there is hope that, at one point, Apple will honour the problem and exchange the drive(s).
I will likely not buy a new drive in the meantime since I learnt that the SATA drives are totally different from the ATA drives...in other words, the WD drive would end up in a drawer since it is incompatible with the hd enclosures [Oxford 911 chips] I have.
In summary, my panic since November [or since Drive 10 in 2001] was justified...the time wasted was incredible. Without DiskWarrior, I would have re-loaded the operating system several times. Great piece of software. Now I am confident that the OS X update combo will resolve the current systems problem. If not, I simply re-install. Just have to defrag the WD drive using the inferior DriveGenius.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Jurgen -

How much does Apple Charge to upgrade a 13" MBP Hard Drive?
How much does Apple Charge to upgrade a 13" MBP Hard Drive?
Laptop is about a month old - And I desperately need a hard drive upgrade (at the time of purchase could not afford).
Thank you so much!

I was told though that doing this voids my warranty with apple on my computer?
You were told wrong. Apple considers the hard drive and RAM to be user-replaceable parts. If they didn't, they wouldn't provide instructions for changing them yourself.
What type of HDD would you reccomend me purchasing? Looking to get something 750GB+
I favor Seagate. Others have different preferences. Avoid so-called "green" drives. -
Old hard drive crashed, cannot get iTunes to find files
Hi,
Please help. Been working on this for weeks and can't get it right. Am at my wit's end:
Old hard drive crashed; had new one installed. Tech person was able to find my iTunes on old drive and saved to thumbdrive. Downloaded most recent software and synced iPod - it "read" some of what was on it but would not play anything. tried to consolidate libraries/import from thumbdrive, then could view my whole library, but when I try to play any song it says it cannot locate the original file - does not matter if i purchased it from iTunes or added from CD. This computer is authorized, I've tried all the other "tutorials," added files (didn't work), tried using my iPod to xfer music to new computer - didn't work. I have my old hard drive booted and ready to go, can see the files and have copied them direct from drive to drive, still didn't work (followed the directions to keep music folder organized, etc.) What am I doing wrong?? I can't use my iTunes at all - just downloaded three new songs and that's all I can play from it. iPod itself seems unaffected.
Thanks!! - [email protected]Hi, you said you still have access to your old hard drive.
Can you move the entire itunes folder from the old to the new?
Not just the 'itunes music' folder - you need the parent folder of that.
It has an important file named itunes library.itl that holds ratings, play counts and the paths to your music files.
Copy that entire itunes folder and all its subfolders over to the new PC.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes and choose the ITL file you just copied over. -
My computer was logged in using my Apple ID. I was out of town when my hard drive crashed, so my wife took it in to get replaced. When doing so the person at the Apple store helping her had her create a new Apple ID to use with the computer. Now, when I open time machine I don't see anything from before this hard drive crashed. How do I get access to my old photos from iPhoto that should have been backed up on the external hard drive?
Sorry I am unclear where the backup is located.. On a time capsule??
Recovery of iphoto library you need to use pondini.
Q15 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
He has a separate page for iphoto. -
My hard drive crashed a month ago. How do I edit my iWeb website now?
My hard drive crashed a month ago. My website was published through iWeb and now on the new drive all my old info is gone. I want to get in to edit my website, but I can't figure out how to do that through my new iWeb software on the new drive?? What do I do?
Everyone else would install the Domain.sites2 folder from a backup copy. Do you have a backup copy?
iWeb can't import your published files.
