3 node Cluster Booting 1 node boots the other node

Hi,
I have build a 3 node cluster on Solaris x86 05/9/ u7 and using Sun Cluster 3.2.u1 ( IBM SVC 4.2.6.1 supports only 32.u1)
Configuration is successful...but when i shutdown one node the other node also shutdown and when they come up, they panic claiming reservation conflict.
Has anybody come across a situtation like this.
Any help appreciated!
Thanks in Adavance
Raj

what happens to the third node during this?
what are you using as a quorum device and what's the status of quorum prior to the shutdown?

  • Can't get migration assistant to find the other computer

Tried to use Migration Assistant, but its help is pretty skimpy. Regardless of options chosen, neither computer could find the other. Should both computers be on with MA, or first one then the other? Really couldn't find any protocol.
They do have different account names and passwords, is that the issue?
G5 to G5 connected by firewire, tried working from either end, old to new, new to old neither way does the other computer get "found".

After connecting the two computers by FireWire cable you must boot one (the old one) into Target Disk Mode. Then boot the other normally. The "old" computer's disk drive should appear on the "new" computer's Desktop. You may then us Migration Assistant to transfer from old to new.
Your new computer's user account that you created will need to have a different short name than the one you plan to import via MA as MA will not overwrite an existing account. If this is no longer feasible then consider moving your data manually.

  • Unity cluster with one node using name and the other using iP

    Hey Guys,
I have two unity connection boxes setup in a cluster, one is know by name and the other by IP address. I'd like to change so that both are using the IP address. The node in the cluster that is using the node name is the publisher. Can I simply go into the cluster settings and change that to an IP address or will that cause big issues.
    Thanks,
    BR

    Hi Brent,
Is there any specific reason why you would want to do this kind of configuration? (Just Curious to know)
I tried doing the same on my Unity Connection cluster (version 8.5(1) SU2 ) in lab.
After making the change in the cluster settings page for the Pub , I did the following :
1)Switch the Primary Role back and forth between the Pub and the Sub :  SUCCESS
2)Checked the service status on the pub and sub using "utils service list" : ALL GOOD
3)Rebooted the Pub followed by the Sub and performed test 1 and 2 again : SUCCESS
4)Checked the output of "show cuc cluster status" on the Pub and Sub again: SUCCESS
However, I could not find any document that says this change is really required under any circumstances.
    I hope that helps!!!

    Hi,
the problem lies in the error message around the quorum device. The SC documentation, specifically the Sun Cluster Error Messages Guide at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4681 explains this as follows:
414208 QUORUM_GENERIC: quorum preempt error in CMM: Error %d --- QUORUM_GENERIC Tkown ioctl failed on quorum device %s.
    Description:
This node encountered an error when issuing a QUORUM_GENERIC Take Ownership operation on a quorum device. This error indicates that the node was unsuccessful in preempting keys from the quorum device, and the partition to which it belongs was preempted. If a cluster is divided into two or more disjoint subclusters, one of these must survive as the operational cluster. The surviving cluster forces the other subclusters to abort by gathering enough votes to grant it majority quorum. This action is called "preemption of the losing subclusters".
    Solution:
Other related messages identify the quorum device where the error occurred. If an EACCES error occurs, the QUORUM_GENERIC command might have failed because of the SCSI3 keys on the quorum device. Scrub the SCSI3 keys off the quorum device and reboot the preempted nodes."
You should try to follow this advice. I would propose to chose a different QD before trying to do this, if you have one available. Is it possible that this LUN has been in use by a different cluster?
To scrub SCSI3 keys you should use the scsi command in /usr/cluster/lib/sc: ./scsi -c inkeys -d <device> to check for the existence of keys, and ...-c scrub.. to remove any SCSI3 keys.

  • After upgrading iOS5, my apps were deleted. Truing get them back, and only partially, the other apps, apple store is changing me again. Tried to restore and and sent an error. Now the Ipad won´t even boot. Can anyone help, besides Apple?

The iOS5 erased all my apps. Went to get them back and only part of it was recognized by Apple store. The others the store prompts to pay. I tried to go back to the old system and restore but as it was in sync an error ocurred and now I don´t have even the operating system. It won´t rebbot. I am afraid it will not stop searching the booting system until batery is dead and it will take many hours.
Any chance somenone ran into the same problem that could help?

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • [solved] Cannot complete install, grub fails to boot the new install

I'm using the 2009.08 USB image.
I've tried this 2 weeks ago, tried it again today, same result. (I'm on Win7 meanwhile).
I'm installing arch, everything goes fine.
    I've tried 2 setups:
    a)
    100GB ext4 /
    12GB swap
    (no separate /boot, should work)
    b)
    100MB ext3 /boot
    100GB ext4 /
    12GB swap
Neither a) or b) will boot.
When the newly installed grub boots, I get a error saying:
filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
I get this for the ext3, ext4, and windows partitions.
I get it for both a) and b) setups.
I have doublechecked the menu.lst file. I've even created another entry setting root=/dev/sdb1 (as opposed to the default /dev/disks/by-uuid/..).
I should mention, I have two disks, the first (sda) is currently with a Win7 installation, the 2nd (sdb) is the one I'm trying to install Arch again (and failing).
After the reboot, I've tried booting into the livecd again and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt, it works.
Why isn't my grub boothing from ext{3,4}?

I was getting that error but after re-installing grub and making some changes to the menu.lst file it was fixed.
I was able to at one stage boot into arch but it gave problems with the root. Now it just seems to freeze while trying to load grub.
I am currently trying yet another install of grub. I have been noticing though that my menu.lst file has been rolling back or not updating when I chroot back into my install after changing it earlier.
Try mounting your /boot partition under /mnt/boot.

At this point the system hangs and spouts gibberish to the console and then the system shuts down and I get a red LED on the server, indicating there's critical logs available in the system log. Unfortunately I can't find anything of relevance in there.
For odd reasons when I first boot the Arch CD and after it crashes ( the system does not physically shut down, the fans and everything still spin, apparently it always does that when it's plugged in to the power socket ) and then proceed to boot my Debian installation I get identical errors and it crashes. I have to unplug it for a minute or two and then it will boot just fine.
It's the first time I had an encounter like this so help would be much appreciated. Posting this late in the night so I'll have a look at it later tomorrow.

    Hi Paolo,
Thks for the reply. I have made some success since I posted. I actually downloaded Ubuntu & created a boot up disk. I have managed to successfully load this alongside the Vista (which doesn't work) & everything seems OK - so all I can say is that it must be somekind of s/w issue or perhaps damaged sectors or something on the Vista install.
I am happy to use Ubuntu - it will be interesting to see if I have to do anymore reformats in future...
    Thks, John

update ... I'm all fixed up now.  There were a series of unrelated items leading me down rabbit holes.  The first of which was my domain was booting, and I could see the port was listening via netstat ... situations around the above error all involved a domain not booting.  I was also receiving a "Error retrieving REN server URL from database" in PSUQSRV and PSMCFLOGs which was an erroneous message you get about REN when MCF is turned on.  In the end it turns out this little demo web/app box was in a DMZ, and they missed a firewall rule for that port ... no one had run into anything that used REN until now. I set up a temp domain on a machine out of the DMZ that just does REN for now ... they're in the middle of a firewall migration and probably wouldn't be in maintenance mode for a demo system

I am new to OES and after running the configtool, creating the ASIAuthorizationProvider and ASIRoleMapperProvider (both has Defaul Identity Directory: wls_dir and Application Deployment Parent: //app/policy/wls_app), binding the SSM, i get this error when starting the WLS admin server:

although, it seems that the OES admin server is up since i am able to access the OES admin console.
i have tried playing around the policies to grant the "weblogic" the priviliges for an Admin but is still get the same issue. Although, when i try to distribute the changes in the policy, "ASI ( Policy for entire Oracle Entitlements Server system ) " still appears in the list of changes.
any thoughts on what the problem is? is there a way to force the distribution of the policy? maybe through the command prompt or other console?
    Edited by: user9056644 on Mar 5, 2010 12:02 AM

Have you applied CP2 or CP3 to OES? There were enhancements that allows these policies to be scoped within an organization. I only ask to help guide you on distributing policies for the runtime WLS domain. The ASI domain is only for the admin. There should have been a set of resources and policies created as a result of running ConfigTool for your new instance (looks like you named it 'wls'). If no CP, it will be in DefaultApp next to ASI.
You have to distribute policies for 'wls' immediately following running ConfigTool before starting WebLogic or you will put it into a state where it can't be started. The corrective action is to remove the state.ck file under C:\BEA_HOME_10/ales32-ssm/wls-ssm/instance/wls_ssm/work/runtime, distribute policies, restart WebLogic.
If you need to re-run ConfigTool (after installing CP for instance), revert the following files:
    <domain>/config/config.xml
    <domain>/bin/startWebLogic.sh | .cmd
Revert from the no-ales backups created. Remove the instance folder under C:\BEA_HOME_10\ales32-ssm/wls-ssm/instance. You can then re-run ConfigTool if you have to.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • My new HD with a cloned system and apps won't boot the G5 when installed. The clone drive is being journal formatted via usb with OS9 checked in disk utility. First time around, I didn't check OS9, and the G5 didn't boot from the clone drive. Advice?

My system is a G5 PPC with 2x 2Gig 64bit processors (dual core). 6 gig of ram on board, running OSX 10.4.11. I recently discovered the main drive was actually a laptop drive someone had stuffed in there! (The machine was given to me - yes, really). So I bought a nice new WD Caviar Black 500Gig HD. Hooked it up via usb adapter (G5 won't see it internally). Disk Utility saw it, formatted it with Journal option selected, but not OS9 install.
After that, I cloned the data on the slow laptop drive complete with all the applications onto the Caviar HD.Sure enough, the G5 can see the Caviar HD with everything on it.
However, when putting the Caviar HD in where the laptop drive once was, the G5 would not see the disk at all.
So now, I'm reformatting the drive again but this time with OS9 checkbox ticked in Disk Utility. After this, I will install it into the machine alongside the offensively sluggish laptop drive, and as long as the G5 sees the Caviar HD internally, I will clone from there, rather than via USB hookup.
I hope this way the system will speed up! There's no way the machine is running as it can do with a pokey little laptop drive in it spinning at 5k surely!
I am assuming the Tiger 10.4.11 is genuine (I think it is - the X symbol is present on the folder), but I don't have the original disk...
Any suggestions? Has anyone had this experience?

Hi BDAqua... downstairs away from unit at the moment. It's a Western Digital Caviar Black 500Gig, twin processors, SATA3 / 6, 64Meg cache on-board... nice. Very quite with minimal vibration (slight).
However as I'm here I can announce I've solved the problem! The G5 had an original Seagate Barracuda HDD on board as a slave drive. I backed up the dat off that onto the Caviar Black via USB adapter. Then Disk Utility wiped the Barracuda safely.
Then, I installed SuperDuper! to clone the data from the sluggish laptop master drive onto the Barracuda; I also told SuperDuper! to boot the G5 from the newly image Barracuda.
After it had done the job I switched off the machine (it may well have rebooted - I was downstairs watching England fail at Eurovision Song Contest), took out the laptop drive and started up the G5.
Mercifully, it rebooted fine! All details and programs are intact and functioning right down to my screensaver.
I can report that the machine is noticably (considerably in the case of Logic8 and JamPack) faster and swifter at sourcing data.
Everything is backed up and I now have a speedier G5! Hurrah!!
I now have a spare 80Gig drive to hand in a caddy (originally a spare backup) that was made about the same time as the G5. It's my guess that it would fit the G5 internally and probably be seen ok by the system.
It's worth a try. The Caviar Black will have to go into a caddy and become my backup disk. It has a clone of the OS and all apps, so if something goes badly wrong, I'm safe.
Just a thought: The more advanced Leopard and Snow Leopard OS may struggle in G5's because the OS itself may require faster HDD's that cannot go into the G5 normally? I see many reports of Snow Leopard running like a bag of bones in people's G5's. Perhaps it's something to do with data retrieval speeds?
    I'm sticking with Tiger!
I hope this story has assisted someone somewhere... and many thanks to all you kind people who offer to help.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Set up choice of partition to boot on every start up instead of one or the other?

I have an iMac 24", using Mountain Lion. I have partitioned another section to run Windows 7 (64 bit).
My favorite keyboard is a Microsoft 6000 wireless one.
On startup I would ideally love to see the choice screen come up so I can choose to boot in OS X or Windows. I don't want to have to push and hold the Option key on the Apple mouse.
When I go to system preferences I can only choose to boot in one or the other, but don't see any option to have the choice of either be automatic on start up.
Is there a way to do it?
Alternately I haven't been able to redefine or change the keys on my Microsoft 6000 wireless keyboard to act as the option key like on the imac keyboard.
I tried to push and hold alt, didn't do anything. I tried the key witht he windows logo on it, same result nothing. Control key , didn't work .
    ANy suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Francesco De Santis

I installed Quick Boot and although it's a practical way to boot once you are in one or the other partition it isn't what I'm wanting to set up. It is useful enough to keep on there though.
When my iMac is turned off and I push the power button to turn it on the screen I want to have automatically show up is the same screen I would get if I used an apple keyboard and pushed the Option key on start up. Only I don't want to use the Apple keyboard and if I did want to use the Apple keyboard my preference would be to set up the power up so that it wouldn't boot in one or the other partition, it would not boot at all initially, just go to the screen that offers a choice in what to boot with (as if I did push and hold the Option key).
I haven't tried Boot Runner, because I don't want to spend $10 only to find out it runs like Quickboot.
I read a bit on rEFlnd but there was quite a bit there to digest and got intimidating. If it will do what I want to set up I would take the time to get past my "intimidation" barrier. Anybody know if rEFlnd will do it?

  • Cannot start weblogic 8.1 User is not permitted to boot the server

    Hi,
Sorry to cross-post, but I didn't seem to get any feedback on this in the 'security' newsgroup.
I have installed Weblogic 8.1SP3 on two identical workstations as well as deployed our application. On one server WL8.1 starts up fine. On another, it says "BEA-090404 user weblogic 8.1 is not permitted to boot the server".
The OS'es are identical: Windows XP Pro SP2.
The only difference I can think of: one is logged into a windows-domain, the other directly onto the PC.
I've ran diffs-ignoring-whitespace (i.e. diff -w) on the important-looking files (.ldift and config.xml) and don't see any differences that would warrant such difference.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    bill

when you installed the WLS , which admin user did you >create ?Admin user 'weblogic'. Actually someon did this long ago and checked in the generated config files (boot.properties) into our source tree?
So, in which mode do you start the WLS ? development or >production ?This I don't know.
    Our setup is as follows:
    1) We install weblogic (server only)
    2) Run our ant scripts
    3) Ant populates and deploys the config files and pe.ear file to a new domain.
    4) we start weblogic from a script in that domain: startWeblogic.cmd
    <Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Configuration Management> <BEA-150016> <This server is being started as the administration server.>
    <Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Management>
We use a few app servers and use a similar paradigm: install, deploy from build tree, start from script.
My question: where do you specify that 'user weblogic is member of the administrator group' ?
