3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

Hi,
We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed
(Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.
Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI
Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.
Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

I thought I was tying to do just that with 8x600 GB RAID-10 using the H/W RAID controller (on the 3rd Server) and creating CSVs out of that space so as to provide better storage performance for the HA-VMs.
1. Storage Server : 8x 600GB RAID-10 (For CSVs to house all HA-VMs running on the other 2 Servers) It may also run some local VMs that have very little disk I/O
2. Hyper-V-1 : Will act has primary HYPER-V hopst for 2x Exchange and Database Server HA-VMs (the VMDXs would be stored on the Storage Servers CSVs on top of the 8x600GB RAID-10). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
3. Hyper-V-2 : Will act as a Hyper-V host when the above HA-VMs fail-over to this one (when HYPER-V-1 is down for any reason). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
The single point of failure for the HA-VMs (non HA-VMs are non-HA so its OK if they are down for some time) is the Storage Server. The Exchange servers here are DAG peers to the Exchange Servers at the head office so in case the storage server mainboard
goes down (disk failure is mitigated using RAID, other components such as RAM, mainboard may still go but their % failure is relatively low) the local exchange servers would be down but exchange clients will still be able to do their email related tasks using
the HO Exchange servers.
Also they are under 4hr mission critical support including entire server replacement within the 4 hour period.
If you're OK with your shared storage being a single point of failure then sure you can proceed the way you've listed. However you'll still route all VM-related I/O over Ethernet which is obviously slower then running VMs from DAS (with or without virtual SAN
LUN-to-LUN replication layer) as DAS has higher bandwidth and smaller latency. Also with your scenario you exclude one host from your hypervisor cluster so running VMs on a pair of hosts instead of three would give you much worse performance and resilience:
with 1 from 3 physical hosts lost cluster would be still operable and with 1 from 2 lost all VMs booted on a single node could give you inadequate performance. So make sure your hosts would be insanely underprovisioned as every single node should be able to
handle ALL workload in case of disaster. Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Change Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster management subnet

    Hi,
We have an existing Hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover cluster.  Virtual machines are live on this cluster.  The networking team has decided to reorganise the network subnets.  As a consequence we need to change the management IPs of our Hyper-V failover
    clusters.
    What are the possibilities?
Evect 1 node from the cluster, set correct management IP on the evicted cluster. Create a single-node cluster.  Mask a new LUN to the single-host cluster.  Execute a shared nothing live migration of the VMs which are hosted on old cluster.

  • Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

    Hi all,
    Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;
'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'
I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'
I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue
    it would seem
some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the line
hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.
    James

The hypervisor event log message is generated only at boot - so this would be expected.  Also vmbus should not be running on the host (I was looking at a VM yesterday)...  This error message is generated only when the vid is determined not to be
running or cannot communicate with the hypervisor.
I have seen this due to anti-virus software in the past or due to driver verifier being configured.  Since it looks like you checked driver verifier already do you have anti-virus software installed?  If so have you followed the best practices
    and exempted the Hyper-v services?

  • SQL Server 2012 Multi-Site clustering with 2 nodes for HA and DR

Usually we setup 2 Node Prod cluster for Local HA and 1 or 2 Nodes in other data centre for DR
Given that we have an option to setup multi-site / multi-subnet clustering from SQL 2008 R2/2012. I am planning to use just 2 nodes, 1 in prod data centre and 1 in DR data centre with 2 or 3 instances. This will act as both HA and DR solution.
I would like to know if this solution is good, and any disadvantages, any best practices, etc.? By implementing this I can save some cost on physical servers.
    Following will be configured:
    * Will be using different subnets, quorum on different server with "Node and File Share Majority"
    * All virtual IPs will be registered for virtual name, and Subnetdelay, Subnet threshold will be modified accordingly
    * All nodes on same domain
    * Use SAN Disk with replication to DR site

SQL 2008 R2 doesn't support multi-subnet clustering. You would still need 3rd party component like VLAN and Disk Replication. SQL 2012 is the first version to support multi-subnet clustering without using VLAN. you would still need disk replication hardware/software.
    Taken from my book
Since nodes are often located in two different data centers at geographically dispersed locations, there is no shared storage between the nodes in a multi-site cluster. Clustering across two different data centers provides a higher level of availability and
protection at the storage level as we have more than a single copy of the data.
For SAN replication technology implemented in such clusters, the main activity is to keep data replicated between the sites. Typically, if we have nodes on two different sites, we would have two different network infrastructures and the nodes would be in
different subnets. In such cases, if we are on a SQL Server version before 2012, we need to use third party VLAN (Virtual LAN) technology so that one IP address travels between two sites. This is called wide-IP. Companies hesitate with this solution because
of the need to buy a third party solution to deploy the VLAN. Using VLAN technology means the same IP address would failover to the remote site in case of a local site disaster. Network administration might consider this as an overhead to maintenance and an
extra piece of the networking component that needs to be secure.
With SQL Server 2012 we do not need to use stretch VLAN technology but SAN replication is still needed for multi-site clustering. The OS version for this can be from Windows Server 2008 R2 and above. In this deployment, we can have a SQL virtual network
name having an “OR” dependency on two different IP addresses. One address would be representing each subnet. With the “OR” dependency, if IP1 or IP2 is online we just use the network name. This is one of the Enterprise Editions only features.
Other option which you can think of, without using 3rd party solutions would be AlwaysOn Availability Group. I have written details about it in my book.

  • Can I remotely failover clusters with powershell from a non clustered server? Windows Server 2008 R2

    Hello,
I'm trying to remotely administer my windows clusters and fail them over with a PowerShell Script.  The server I'm using is not a clustered server.  I've already installed the Failover Clustering Tools.  I'm able to retrieve information about
my clusters but when I try to fail them over I receive an error saying "The cluster service is not running."
    The command I'm using is 'Get-ClusterNode $Server | Get-ClusterGroup | Move-ClusterGroup'
Error message:  'Get-ClusterNode : The cluster service is not running.  Make sure that the service is running on all nodes in the cluster'
Is there a way to install the cluster service or is there a different way to go around this error?
    Thank you!

    Hi Armando,
To get cluster node information, please try to use the cmd cluster.exe, like:
    cluster.exe node NodeName /force

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 Remote Management with Windows 8.1 using Microsoft Account (Workgroup)

    Hello,
I've set up a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Server and tried to manage it from a Windows 8.1 with a Microsoft Account. Everything is in the same workgroup. After many searches, the only way is set up the server for remote access, install RSAT and log on with an Administrator
account from the server in Server Manager console.
So, this situation generates a question: since it's impossible to set up a Microsoft Account in Hyper-V server as a local user, it's impossible to use "the same account and password" way to establish a link between server and desktop? I must use
a remote account for connection? Why Windows 8.1 local account and online account can't be merged as a single account?
By the way, there are some consoles that cmdkey doesn't work, so it's not an option.
    Best regards.

I have not fully tried this myself but I know this:
A microsoft account can only be added to Server as a User, and only after Desktop Experience has been added.  This is also how you enable the MSFT Store on Server.
This also requires a Full install of Server and is not possible on the free Hyper-V Server SKU.
But, the legacy Server Manager console that Hyper-V Manager is built on has no concept of this new user account type.  And neither does Kerberos (the default security mechanism).
So, my guess is that the best you can do is treat it the same as any workgroup machines.
If you use Azure AD and sync your domain credentials, you have the password equivalent.  But you still require some AD in the middle.  This is simply the current state of affairs.

  • Replace 2 old SANS with Storage Spaces?

We have two old HP SANs we want to replace before they fail.

We can replace them with equivalent SANs but I would like to ask you was to the comparison with a Storage Space solution: eliminating the rather idiosyncratic SAN management software etc..

    Hi Carol,
Is there any specific question regarding this topic?
General speaking, Storage Space is somewhere similar to software RAID - you can create simple volume (RAID0), mirror volume (RAID1) or parity volume (RAID5). And there are some other options such as dual parity, 3-way mirror etc. You can manually confige
these options with PowerShell cmdlet so in order to manage Storage Space, you may need to realize related PowerShell cmdlet first.

  • Combine docs with same data fields, one overrides the other

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me. My company uses pdf forms where we have to combine multiple pdfs of different people filling in the same base form. When we try to combine them it comes up that one overrides the other fields with the same names. This takes all the information from one form and puts it in what is supposed to be a different form.
The error box that comes up says we must use a PDF portfolio to do this without having the override but the portfolio doesn't work for what we need.
Is there a way around this? We have to use the same form so of course there will be the same field names.
    Many thanks in advance.

My insurance company replaced my stolen iphone 4S with a new one, will the apple store allow me to exchange it for an iphone 5 and pay the price difference?

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
You would need to ask that directly to Apple. Apple is not here nor does Apple answer questions here.
To return an iOS product requires a valid receipt. You have 30 days to return an iPhone. The iPhone must have all original packaging & accessories and be in new condition. Apple may charge a restocking fee on a returned iPhone.
If the iPhone was bought from a 3rd party, their regulations for returns would apply.

  • Trouble with Storage space.

I'm running out of space in my hard drive. Can I transfer my movies I have purchased to an external drive and gain that storage space?

Yes, you can, but you have to put them on the external, then hold down the option key while dragging them to iTunes so iTunes does not automatically place a copy in your main media location.  If they are already in iTunes you will also end up with a duplicate entry which, after deleting from the main drive, will end up with a ! next to it and you can delete the old entry.  However, should you forget to turn on the external drive before starting iTunes, iTunes will also give you a ! for the files on the external.  I haven't tried this but maybe quitting iTunes, starting the drive, then restarting iTunes might fix that.
Many people just go with the option of having their complete iTunes collection on an external drive, by dragging the iTunes folder to the external, then starting iTunes with the option key held down and guiding it to the external.

  • Problems with Storage Spaces

I have a storage space with 10 drives, with over 10GB of free disk space in the pool.   Occasionally, certain of my spaces are inaccessible, presumably because two drives intermittently fail; these two drives total2.5g of physical space.
I have retired the two drives, but storage spaces will not let me remove them.  When I click remove it says : "cant remove the drive from the pool", "drive could not be removed because not
all data could be reallocated. Add an additional drive to this pool and reattempt this operation".
How can I address this problem?

    Hi,
According to Storage Space FAQ, you could find the reason:
Why do I have a low capacity warning even though I still have unused pool capacity?
Storage Spaces provides advance notification of thinly provisioned storage spaces when the storage pool does not have enough capacity spread among a sufficient number of disks to continue to write new data. The default warning point is 70% capacity utilization.
To learn when Storage Spaces will generate a warning, consider the following example.
A two column, two-way mirror space that uses thin provisioning in a four disk pool
Two of the disks have 1TB capacity and two have 2TB capacity. Because a two column, two-way mirror space needs four disks (number_of_disks = NumberOfColumns * NumberOfDataCopies), it will evenly consume all four disks as it writes new data. When capacity
utilization of the two 1TB disks reaches 70%, Storage Spaces will warn of a low capacity condition. Even though the entire pool has 3.2TB free capacity, the thinly provisioned space will soon not be able to write any more data because the 1TB disks are nearly
    fully consumed.
You can easily keep individual storage spaces’ low capacity warning synchronized with each other and with the pool by following the guidance in the next section, “How do I increase pool capacity?” from the moment of creating the pool and through all
    subsequent expansions of the pool.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 new VM with ISO in DVD boot failed - default SCSI not IDE

Hi, have created some VMs fine on 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V but now onto 2012 R2, am using the Gen 2 VM and hitting install error when booting them from the 2012R2 RTM .ISO (downloaded straight from Technet) loaded into virtual DVD:
I see from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53f901e4-5bd0-4e13-80a2-bca2f57b15e9/hyperv-unable-to-boot-from-cd-or-iso-in-vm-machine?forum=winserverhyperv that Hyper-V seems unable to boot from a synthetic SCSI until guest OS actually
installed - so Catch-22! But I can't add an IDE Controller because it's not on the list:
I tried the Integration Services and it seems fine on the Settings (including ticking the only one unticked - Guest Services) although if you need to run them from the DVD, it has the same problem - you can see them loaded (or the Win2012R2 ISO) in the DVD
Media but you can't make them run through booting on SCSI!
The physical drives are SATA not SCSI but presumably no matter as Hyper-V runs SCSI virtually, but why does Hyper-V default to SCSI and how do I get the DVD to run off an IDE instead if that is the way to install a base OS from .ISO? Or is there an easier
    way than all this?
    TIA, Phil.

    I found this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2013/11/11/hyper-v-generation-2-virtual-machines-part-9.aspx
    I hope this help.
"...yes, we’re acutely aware that the generation 2 EFI boot loader messages persist on the screen and it can be a little confusing. Essentially what the generation 2 virtual machine did was:
Attempt to boot from the CD SCSI device containing the Windows 8 ISO. This is where the ‘Press any key…’ message came from. As no key was pressed, we went to the next boot entry. (And this is where we didn’t clear the message from the EFI CD boot loader)
I didn’t press F12 (in fact, this VM wasn’t connected to a network), so network boot failed
The SCSI VHDX is raw with no partitioning or file system, so this too failed
So why did the generation 1 virtual machine start setup from the Windows media? The answer is simply that it’s the way Windows media is built, and it’s inconsistent between the PCAT and EFI loaders.
However, it’s relatively simple to solve if you want to avoid the press any key message. In fact, we almost have all the pieces from previous parts. In particular, part 4 where we injected keyboard drivers into the Windows 8 media.
If you loopback mount Windows 8 or 8.1 RTM media, and navigate to the \efi\microsoft\boot directory, you will see there are two versions of cdboot.efi
The default version, cdboot.efi prompts for a keypress. The unused version, cdboot_noprompt.efi doesn’t prompt.
So it’s fairly simple to create modified media which uses the noprompt version. First, copy the contents of the ISO to a working directory, rename cdboot.efi to cdboot_prompt.efi, and rename cdboot_noprompt.efi to cdboot.efi.
Do the same with efisys.bin and efisys_prompt.bin
Then re-use our oscdimg command (in an elevated deployment and imaging tools environment) from part 4 to recreate the media.
