3 partition scheme using Lion and Winclone

Hi All,
I used this tutorial to set up a 3 partition scheme to my iMac (OSX Lion):
http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=88729
I have done everything like the tutorial instructed, but W7 won't boot anymore. I even can't select Windows anymore while booting. The tutorial also describes this, so it is not something weird.
I followed every step of the tutorial, so i made the W7 (Bootcamp) Image. But when i want to restore this image, winclone gives an error. This is what the log file tells me:
Mon Aug  1 23:13:34 CEST 2011: Partition is : /dev/disk0s5

Does someone know what to do?
Regards! Guido

I don't do Windoze, but Lion does not like "non-standard" Boot Camp installations, and as I understand it, that means a single OSX partition and the Boot Camp partition as set up by Boot Camp, with no changes to either partition since.  Period.

  • How do I create 2 Recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?

Well that is basically the question:
How do I create 2 recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?
Reason is that I would like to keep the option to return to Lion, or even better, have a seperate partition for eacht?

can I access my programs from the other partition, so I can save space ...
No, as far as I know, each one is completely separate - especially if you're dealing with two different versions of OS's.
is it possible to safely make an extra partion on a running drive (it is my main computer ...) The disk is large enough ...
how large would this have to be
I've personally never done it on a running drive - have read it's possible, but don't want to suggest it since I've never done it and wouldn't be sure about the steps. This is how I got to two partitions on my iMac:
Originally, I had just one partition with Snow Leopard. I used CCC to clone that to an external drive. Booted into that drive and used DU to partition and erase the internal. I then cloned the new clone back. Also cloned the same thing to the other partition which I then upgraded to Lion. So I had two OS's - SL and Lion. I've now decided to clone my SL to an external drive for occasional use and installed ML on that partition - so now I have Lion and ML.
There are two ways to get a "fresh" install: either download the OS again and install it on a partition of your choice or, as I've done as well, copy the installer to a safe place so you don't need to download it again. It does include whatever apps/software is included in the OS.  I've designated two smaller partitions on externals as my "fresh" installs of both Lion and ML for emergency or reinstall purposes (this is my way of dealing with not having install DVDs) - I took the time to install it there and then slowly add fresh installs of my important apps (either via download or install CD) - don't bother with the little/less used stuff, a current copy of that can be downloaded if and when I need it. I don't really update those two - that can also be done if/when I need it since that'll always change.
So, yesterday, I decided I wanted to start fresh with ML - booted into my fresh install of Lion (on external), wiped the SL partition on my internal and installed Lion. Decided to download a fresh copy of the ML installer and installed that. Then ran Software Update. After that, repaired permissions. Then I methodically opened every third party app and checked for updates - installed those where necessary. After all that, I simply copied (drag 'n drop) my entire Documents folder (which contains all my important data,, photos, etc) over from another backup.
This took a while, but mostly because of the long download times; the installs weren't all that bad. I should be running a really clean system now, especially since nothing was ported over except my Documents folder.

I am using Lion and Remote desktop.. I want to share my screen with 8-12 other computers.. I am a teacher and have a brand new iMac lab but the screen share is too laggy or pretty much freezes at times.  HELP!!!!

  • Anyone using Lion and Snow Leopard?  I will be soon.

I will soon be using both Lion and Snow Leopard on my newly upgraded hybrid hard drive.I know that I should need to partition the drive into three 1 for Lion 1 for SL and 1 for data/applications.
The problem is how is how much space should I give each partition?
Has anyone done this before or have any good ideas how to go about it?
    Some extra info:
I am currently using a MacBook Pro (mid 2009 13")
I am currently using Lion OS X v10.7.4
The new drive is 750GB Seagate Momentus XT 7200rpm 8GB(solid-state) hybrid drive
The soon to be replaced drive is a stock 250GB 5400rpm HDD
    Thanks all help appreciated

It's important that you leave a minimum amount of free space for the OS to use. You will see anywhere from 16 to 30 GBs for your OS and iLife apps. You need enough space to allow for all your third-party applications and document files. When fully set up you may have only 30 GBs of free space which is an appropriate amount to have, but not less than 20 GBs. That makes 60 GBs a reasonable minimum size.
If you haven't put everything in concrete, I might suggest going with a 500 GB Seagate XT hybrid together with a 128 or 256 GB SSD using an OWC DataDoubler replacing the optical drive. I suggest that mainly because using the same hard drive for the OS and Data partitions will actually make file I/O slower. Having two drives and using an SSD for the startup volume will enhance file I/O operations. Only two partitions on the SSD - each 60 GBs - fit neatly in 128 GBs.

  • How do I get CS6 to not distort color when using Lion and printing from Epson R2880?

Ever since I up-graded to CS5 , the color has been distorted.  It is not an Epson Lion problem because printing from preview or iPhoto the color is perfect.
Adobe has known about this problem since January 23, 2012.  Their help people have taken over my computer for hours at a time and not been able to discover the source of the problem
I thought they might have fixed it with CS6 but no luck  I chose use CS4 settings because CS4 had worked.
I printed using Printer Manages Color and color matching, epson color.  I selected the correct media.  The prints came out dark.  The yellows turned green and the greens turned blue/green, reds became dull and blues a bit dark.
This is most upsetting because I cannot afford to buy a new printer and ink.  Also I should not have to buy new equipment because Adobe cannot make their product work correctly.

    cmszinnia wrote:
If the printer prints colors accurately from Lion apps, which it does, then the problem is in Adobe.
Uh...ok...then the REST of the FREE world is going down the tubes because obviously, Adobe has screwed up?
Some of us are using LR4 and CS6 to print and getting accurate and excellent results with Lion (10.7.3) so the question begging for an answer is why can't you?
Read very carefully what Chris wrote...the odds are REAL GOOD you are NOT using the correct settings...but since you don't bother to show or explain the EXACT settings you are using when printing, we'll never know. Will we?
If the vast magority of the user base is NOT having an issue, to what do you attribute the disconnect? User Error is the single most likely result...
You want help? Or do you want to argue?
I know a little bit about printing and I seem to be able to print with zero issues on a wide variety of Epson printers...you wanna place blame or do you wanna learn how to fix the problem? (clue, the odds are it isn't Adobe nor Epson leading to the problems, it's you bud).

  • Using Lion and Office 2011 with two computers

Using an iMac at winter home, a Macbook Pro at summer home. Before leaving for the summer I use Migration Assistant to update the Macbook Pro for summer use, leaving the iMac behind. If I buy both Lion and Office 2011, can I use the single installation on one computer, then later move them to the other via Migration Assistant? Or must I pay for two applications? Thanks.

Buy it once at the App Store and then Lion can be installed on as many systems as you "own and control" for no additional charge.  This would also apply to Apple's iWork suite.  Office 2011 sells in a family pack which allows you to install it on up to three systems.  You can definitely transfer the Office apps using Migration Assistant, and you might be able to transfer the license, but you would have to ask Microsoft whether that would violate the Microsoft license agreement.

  • Using lion and snow leopard on the same computer/ partition?

In the old days to partition a hard drive on a computer the hard drive had to be erased/ reformatted first.  Do I understand correctly that partioning a hard drive no longer requires this?  Can someone explain, as if I'm 6 years old, how to do this?  I want to upgrade to lion so I can use i-cloud on a mpb  but must still have snow leopard due to a couple of ppc programs/files I still need  (such as the data in chronos personal organizer, quicken 2007, and maybe a few more).  So how exactly do I do this, without reformatting etc.  ?   Sharon

Launch Disk Utility->Help->Disk Utility Help->Creating new partitions on a disk. Note, that to dynamically add a partition, journaling has to be enabled on all partitions. I have my iMac's 1 TB HD partitioned into three bootable volumes. Two running SL and one running Lion.

  • Partition scheme for PPC and Intel

I have a G4 mini and an Intel Macbook and one USB harddrive to back them up with time machine. I think I'll connect the drive to the mini and share the drive so I can back up the Macbook.
    Anyway, I was reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306932
and it says to choose the "Apple Partition Map" scheme for use with PPC and "GUID" for use with Intel. Anyway, I was wondering what I should choose when I need to use it with both processor types.
    Thanks for any advice!

  • How to put a .mov file on a dvd using lion and have a commercial DVD player play my movie? iDVD is gone.  I never had it.

I have found a lot of frustration around this topic but no answers.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Version 10.7.4.
I have a video I made with iMovie.  I want to burn it to a DVD for commercial DVD playback.  It's as simple as that.
    Things I've tried.
    1. Using iMovie, I saved an HD version of the project to my desktop as a .MOV file.  I know I can just burn that to a DVD.  It won't play.  I need a utility/program to put the necessary files on the DVD so a commercial namebrand DVD player will have what it needs.
    2. I heard iDVD used to do this but it's not on my MacBook Pro (Lion OS).  I've researched things like "What replaced iDVD" but found nothing but a but of complaining.  (and I can see why).
    3. I have looked for freeware.  It all looks fishy.
    Other options I'm looking into.
Use my Mac and connect a cable to the big TV screen.  Play the movie using this screen as a secondary monitor.  Problem - I have a dozen cables but none for this combo.
Move the .MOV file to a PC and play it using QuickTime.  The cables I have will work for a PC to TV.  Sad option.

Have you tried...     Burn 2.5.1 (FREE)

    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A

  • How to migrate a LR catalog on a partitioned drive using Yosemite and Maverick?

When I opened LR in Yosemite LR built another catalog within Yosemite. When I run a search while in Yosemite for the LR catalog that Maverick uses I get nothing. When I log back into Maverick, there it is.
I don't want to copy the catalog and drop it into Yosemite because I don't want to create two separate catalogs which will eventually have different data. Is there anything else I can do? What do you do when you're migrating your catalog and LR doesn't see it when you select Open from the pull down menu?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you only need Windows to run one program (and if this problem does not require the best GPU performance), I recommend you to install Windows in a virtual machine instead of using Boot Camp. With this, you will be able to run Windows without restarting your Mac and there will be no risks during the installation.
To make a virtual machine, you can use an application like Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox. Then, you only need to get a ISO file of Windows 8.1 with a product key, so you can install it in a virtual machine.
If you still want to install Windows with Boot Camp, you can install Windows from a USB drive (it is the only way in your iMac apart from using an external disc drive). To create the USB drive with Windows, you also need a ISO file of Windows 8.1. You have all the steps in this site > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf
