3 partitions on imac 11,3

I have an iMac 11,3 (3.2 GHz i3, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD). I would like to know if anyone has encountered any issues with creating 3 partitions on one drive. Has there been any lowered performance? Ideally, I'd like to have one partition devoted to Lion or Mountain Lion, the second devoted to Windows 7, and the third devoted to Snow Leopard for use with Final Cut Studio 3 (I hate FCPX!). Thanks!

Only on the ones containing a bootable OS. Six of mine are in that category.

  • Windows 7 partition on imac 21.5" mid-2011

    hi,
I want to partition my imac so I can go from Yosemite to Windows 7. When using boot camp, I do not have the option "Create a windows 7 install disk" although I have a disk drive on my mac.
Can someone help me with the installation ?
    Lea

    1. You need a physical DVD. If you have a valid ISO, you can burn it to a physical DVD - Disk Utility 12.x: Burn a disk image to a CD or DVD.
    2. Your Optical drive should be functional.
    3. Run Bootcamp Assistant. Check both boxes (Download Software, Install Windows).
    4. You will need a USB2 (not a USB3) flash drive, from which BC drivers will be used. It will be erased and formatted to FAT32, and BCA will download drivers from Apple servers.
Please see How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support
Most Macs with built-in Optical drives do not provide the option to create a USB-based Windows Installer and require physical media. Some 2011-2012 Notebooks are an exception.

  • Failing at Partitioning my iMac HD

    Hi Guys,
This is my first time posting so sorry if it is in the wrong section. I am trying to partition my iMac HD for 100GB for Windows XP. The first problem I encounter is this, in Boot Camp Assistant it says this "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. ", then I "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility and it says something has an invalid item count it should be something instead of something. So... I try to boot from the install disk that came with my iMac and it spins for about 15-20 seconds and then spits it out, my iMac reads all other discs. I have tried booting into safe mode and booting up and holding CMD + S and then put fsck -fy, when I do that it says the same as it does in Disk Utility then it says it's repaired but it hasn't. Any help will be MUCH appreciated.
    Thankyou

When you insert the Leopard disc and restart with the C key held down, do you still get to Installer's first screen? Are you able to run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu? When you are doing this, does performance seem normal (for running off the optical drive), or does it stall?
In Disk Utility, when you look at the sidebar, does the internal drive have the +Macintosh HD+ volume indented under it, or is it just the internal drive by itself with no volume under it?
You said that if you select the drive in the sidebar, you are not allowed to do +Repair Disk+ on the +First Aid+ tab? If so, and if there is a volume under the drive, try selecting it (instead of the drive) and going to the +First Aid+ tab. Can you them run +Repair Disk+ ?
If there is no volume under the drive, it is possible that you have a serious hard drive failure.
If you have not already, you should try this procedure to reset SMU (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to unplug everything. When you reconnect just the power cord, if you have been using a crowded or old power strip, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, at least initially for this test. Try powering it up with nothing connected, except the power cord. Is there any improvement?
If not, based on what you described, my guess is that your hard drive has become faulty. If it is also not booting or running normally from the optical drive now, then it may be something else.

The only supported method is to backup OSX, erase internal disk, restore from TM backup, and try BCA again.
Before you do this, one suggestion is to run Disk Utility Verify/Repair (twice) and a SMC Reset - Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support after each Repair.

  • Activate Windows 7 in Boot Camp partition on iMac 27

    Hy,
I have a problem with Windows activation.
    My configuration:
iMac 27.4 GB Memory, dual processor, OS X Snow leopard, Windows 7 in a Boot Camp partition
    I use Windows 7 in 2 ways:
by starting the machine in the Boot Camp partition (with 4 GB memory)
by opening a session VMWARE Fusion under Mac OS X (with 1 GB memory)
No problem (except: very slow with starting and black screen - problem discussed in the same forum)
My problem: how to activate Windows?
I activated Windows after starting via Boot Camp: no problem
But when I use Windows via VMWARE Fusion, I receive a message “you must activate this version of Windows 7 - there remain xx days” I understand that the hardware configuration is not the same one, but I use Windows 7 out of only one machine (but with 2 different hardware configuration), therefore nothing illegal.
How can I solve this problem?
Has somebody the same problem ?
    Thank you in advance.

Did this actually work? My understanding is that Windows 7 regards this as two separate installations and that it won't work?
I'm trying to find out if I have to chose between bootcamp or Fusion or if I can work with both.
You need to activate Windows 7 in BootCamp and in Fusion. Microsoft allows multiple free activations. If these are the only two activations for your copy of Windows, just follow the online activation process. It is quick and simple. If this process fails for some reason, call the automatic activation line. You'll be stepped through the activation by an automated attendant (robot). In the very unlikely event that the automated call activation fails, call and talk to a Microsoft activation person who will help you out.

  • Partition of iMac

    Hello
I want to use Corel Draw, and was thinking of installing the program onto an iMac, into a Windows partition created with Bootcamp.
I was thinking of using the iMac only for windows software, with my existing iMac for Mac programs. So, what I was wondering if it is possible, and is it a good idea, to create a Bootcamp partition which occupies the whole of the iMac? -with no Mac partition, as I would use the other iMac for Mac work.
    Grateful for any advice.

    Hi,
while it is possible to have/make a Windows-only Mac (with or without the help of BootCamp) I personally would suggest to have at least some small OSX partition on it as well.
Something around 15-20GB is sufficient with OSX Snow Leopard when leaving out any additional software installations.
Apple sometimes releases Firmware and SMC updates for Macs that only install if run from an internal OSX partition and won't run if the OSX is on an external harddisk.
And they definitely won't run in Windows.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • How to partition my imac

Every time i try to partition my hard drive it says my version of operating system is old and therfore i get an error message
I use snow lepeord 10.6.8 and have tried using Disk utility and Boot Camp please help
    Regards Tony

I have never heard, if that is the actual error message. Usually it says something like "update the firmware" but it is still missleading and ambiguous. And there is no firmware update.
He said he tried Boot Camp, so that would have had to be "Assistant."
Try using your OS X DVD and repair the hard drive.
    Zap PRAM.
Repair Permissions (while booted from your hard drive, not from DVD)
Do have a clone or TimeMachine backup.
How old or what model of iMac? 2009 or earlier? in some cases if the hard drive has never been reformatted it may have an old partition table.
As for instructions, the best place for FAQ, How To and manuals plus support articles

If you used Disk Utility first, that could make it harder to remove the partition it created and create using BCA.

  • How do I re-partition my iMac hard drive?

Originally partitioned my 1TB internal to 250GB/750GB. Now it seems I need more space for my boot partition. I've used Time Machine to BU. So do I have to completely erase, booted from my Snow Leopard install disks, partition like I want to, and then use my Time Machine BU to re-install all my stuff? Will it recognize my new partition and put each BU disk into its' proper place?
    Thanks!!!

It depends on which partitions are where, and which ones you want to keep/move/change.
With Disk Utility, you can expand a partition without erasing it if it's not the last one on the drive.
So if the diagram shown by Disk Utility when you select the top line for the drive, then the Partition tab shows partition A on top and B on the bottom, you can delete B and expand A to fill the drive. Then click the plus sign at the bottom to split the expanded A, and set the sizes as needed. Then you'll only have to restore B.
It's not quite the same thing, but there are a couple of screen prints in #6 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), that should give you the general idea.
But if the partitions are arranged the other way, yes, you must completely erase and repartition.
I'd strongly agree with Thomas that you should have a second backup before starting this, just in case something goes wrong. It's unlikely, but does happen on occasion.
I'd also agree that in most cases OSX works much better with OSX, apps, and data in a single partition; Apple's engineers spend lots of time optimizing it to do just that. There are exceptions, of course, but one big pot is usually better than two small ones.
To restore your boot partition, see #14 in the FAQ; to restore a data-only partition, see #15.

  • Re-try: Partitioned '08 iMac, Win7, Radeon X1600, help with upgrading driver?

I've been trying to use information found on other threads to update my driver but have had no success; my software and cpu are somewhat older than what I've been reading about. So.... I'm going to try this again before taking the thing to the local fixit shop (I don't want to do that...) And hopefully if there's someone in the same jam out there a search will bring them to this thread.
Is there anyone out there that can give me a simple 'do this, do this, do this, and do this' for my particular setup? I've used DriverSweeper prior to attempting installs, and Mobility Modder to get around AMD's Catalyst installer problems re:bootcamp.

I love my Mac. But I love my Windows-only games.

The first part of your mcelog (the bit about " failed to prefill DIMM database from DMI data") strongly suggest one of the new RAM chips is defective. Start by simply putting the old one back in place and seeing if that helps. If it does, exchange the new faulty one with the seller for one that works. However, since you say yourself you aren't very tech savvy, it may be the case that you've simply purchased a RAM chip that is not compatible with your motherboard (although if both of the new chips are identical and the first one works, that may not be so).
When deciding to upgrade all the most vital hardware components of a machine, it's best to do it one piece at a time, and reconfigure the operating system to account for the new hardware. Uninstall old drivers, install new ones, change any personal settings related to the old hardware, reboot, make sure everything's fine and then repeat the process for every other new piece of hardware. Replacing everything at once without ensuring it will all work together increases the chances problems like this immensely---the problem itself may be very simple, but you've undertaken so many changes in such a short time that finding out what the problem is in the first place can be very complicated.

  • How do I fix a permissions problem that's emerged since I created a Snow Leopard partition on my Lion iMac?

I recently partitioned my iMac, which was running Lion, so I could open old files created by apps like AppleWorks. I installed Snow Leopard in the new partition and the apps I moved there are running fine. But now when I'm using Lion and want to save or open a file, I'm frequently told I don't have permission to access or change the enclosing folder. I've tried using Disk Utilty and also manually resetting permissions on my Lion Home folder. All fixes seem temporary at best. I don't know why I'm having this problem or how to fix it.  I also don't know why there's a third (Recovery) partition I didn't create. Can I get rid of it?

Changed the SL username/password combo to match the Lion one. Some problems were resolved but not others. Had to manually give myself Read/Write permission on the Lion partition's Home folder and its enclosures. This further restored functionality--e.g., allowing me to use Dropbox again--, but still left several "bugs." The most annoying have to do with Safari 5.1.1.  Whenever I open it now I get Apple's Support Downloads page, although my Safari Preferences are set for new pages to open with Homepage and Google as my homepage. Also, each time I open Safari, the toolbar initially loads icons for Readability (to which I'm a paid subscriber), but then I get a message saying Safari can't install the Readability extension. At this point, Readability's icons disappear and when I go to Safari's Preferences it no longer appears in my installed extensions list.  But if I close Safari and reopen, the whole routine is repeated.

  • Will using a 10.6 disc to partition my OS 10.4 iMac erase my files?

I want to partition my iMac running OS 10.4.  From my other Mac, I have an OS 10.6 disc to use for the Install disc.
I checked with Mac help, and it reads,
"Partitioning a disk erases all the files on the disk. If you have any files on the disk you want to save, be sure to make a copy of them on another disk before you partition the disk."
Will the partition I don't select for 10.6 installation maintain 10.4 with all my stored files?

Here is what I'm looking at in Help followed by clarification of my question.
    To partition your startup disk:
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.
When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
When the Installer appears, choose Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your disk from the list, and click Partition.
Select how you want to partition the disk and any options you want, then click the Partition button at the bottom of the window.
    Quit Disk Utility.
When the Installer opens again, you can install Mac OS X on one of the partitions.
If you want to use another disk as the start-up disk, choose Utilities > Startup Disk and choose it.
I have my files in 10.4 backed up on cd's.  I'm asking the question so I know how much time will be involved to get my Mac back in order after partitioning.
To put the question another way,
If I use the 10.6 disc for Install (step 7), will I then have to install 10.4 again on the other partition?

Any Mac running OSX 10.7 or later is going to have a partitioned drive.  It is how the system is set up to work without a installer DVD.

  • Can I partition a soon to be received iMac 27" 3.4 Ghz i7 Quad core running Lion and install Snow Leopard to run old applications

I am about to get a 27" iMac 3.4 Ghz i7 Quad Core with Lion installed.
I want to run one or two old applications that will not run under Lion.
Is it possible to partition the iMac to run Snow Lepoard from there when I need it ?

I have tried to partition  my Macbook Air (running Lion) using Bootcamp but all it will let me do is install Windows (which I do nor want to do.) Otherwise it will not partition the HD.
It gives three options. 1. Create a Windows 7 install disc. 2. Download the Windows support software.  3. Install Windows 7.
For interest I ran Bootcamp on my iMac (running Snow Leopard) and that would allow me just to partition the drive
(with no need to install Windows) by checking "I have the Mac OS X installation diec... or I have the support software.." (which I don't) and then goes to the partitioning page.
If you can put me wise I wouldbe grateful.
    Cheers
    Roger.

  • Problem installing Windows 7 64-bit on late 2013 iMac 27"

Is Windows 7 64-bit compatible with this computer?
    Hardware and software:
    • Late 2013 iMac 27", 3.5 GHz I7, 16 GB memory, 1 TB hard drive (no fusion drive)
    • Mac OS 10.9.1
    • USB thumb drive
    • Boot Camp Assistant 5.1.0
    • Windows 7 64-bit install disk iso image downloaded from Microsoft
    Install steps:
    1. Use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7 install (from iso image) and Apple Support Software (creates WININSTALL USB drive)
    2. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create 50 GB Windows partition on iMac internal drive and start Windows install
    3. Complete initial install steps until given option to select install partition
    4. Select 50 GB partition. Error message that partition is not formatted correctly. Use Advance Options to format (presumably to NTFS)
    5. Select 50 GB partition again and click "Next"
    6. Get error message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
    7. Install quits at this point
I have successfully installed Win 7 on another computer (2010 Mac Pro) using these steps. I also tried installation on the iMac using an iso image created from my original Win 7 64-bit install disk, with the same installation error as above.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 and/or Boot Camp is compatible with this iMac. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am awaiting delivery on the exact model you have and have been researching how much trouble it will be to put 64 bit windows 7 ultimate on my machine when it gets here. I'm not pleased at what I've been reading so far. I have not seen the two other posts but yours is enough to concern me.
Have you also seen that 10.9.1 update may be responsible for this? I've seen where 10.9 caused some problems with the bootcamp app but then the process was completely hosed with the 10.9.1 update. Are you seeing this as well?
Being a life-long mac dude, it pains me when their stuff just doesn't work because it usually just does. ****, that's why I started on a mac in the first place.
The support site says that they come with 90 days of complimentary support. Is this not an issue they should be responsible for addressing via support? Or is that just one long wait on hold waiting to talk to somebody that won't consider this a pure apple issue?
I was also curious if your install .iso contains both 32 and 64 bit versions?

  • 64-Bit and 32-Bit: Snow Leopard and Windows 7
