3 person video chat

How do you video ichat with 3 persons. I can have myself and my wife, but I cannot add my niece by clicking on her in my buddy list, as i get an error message saying that a video device is already occupied. this is not specific to my niece (thats only an example) as it is true when I try to add another person for video chat. each of us has a fast connection and our own dot mac account.

Multi-person video chat

Yesterday I was able to use the multi-person video chat on iChat. Today I can't. I have no idea why. My friend also has multi-person video chat capabilities but today her video chat icon is a single-person one. Is this just a problem with my iChat? Or is everyone having it? How can I fix it?

iChat since iChat 2.0 AV has always read the "Automatic" setting in Quicktime System Preferences as a zero (0).
It has been mentioned for a long time and in several places that it should be set to something that sees the setting as a high enough number.

Multi person video chats

Is it possible to do a multi person video chat with a G4? I'm running a 1.6GHz PowerPC G4 with 896Mb of RAM. Thanks.

you should be able to participate in one, but not host (meaning initiate) one. i have a powerbook G4, and when i have a three way chat with my mom and brother, either my mom (intel mac mini) or my brother (imac G5) has to initiate the chat from the start.... i can initiate a two way video chat no problem, but if a third person is invited after i initiate the chat, it wont work because my computer is the central hub and isnt fast enough to juggle all them info packets....

Is there any way to get ichat back with mountain lion? also is there a way to have multi-person video chats with messages?

There is no way that I know of to install iChat because it is not supported in ML. You may want to read a couple of these Threads

2 X person video chat for Intel Qs

Hey I know the specs required for doing a multi person (eg, more than 2 people) video chat for PowerPC processors, however I was wondering what the spec requirements are for the Intel ones... I am primarily directing this towards the Mac Mini Solo v. Duo which I am assuiming the Solo could be the only one that might have limitations (like my poor powerbook...).
SO my question is can a Mac Mini Solo HOST a multi person video chat OR is it like my powerbook and other "slower" apples that can only join multi chats yet cannot host them? AND if the Solo cannot HOST a multi person video chat CAN it at least JOIN a multi person video chat?
AND finally JUST to make sure there are no compatabilities problems, can a intel based apple multi-video chat with a powerpc apple?

Go to System Preferences and then Quicktime.
Select the Streaming tab.
In the drop down se the speed to match your download speed.
If it faster than 1.5meg then use 1.5 meg.

"computer can not initiate a multi-person video chat" ?

2 of us have MacBook Pros, third guy has new MacBook.
Our MacBook's have OS X 10.5.8,
The new MacBook has OS 10.6.1.
Me and the other person can iChat with 3 other ppl,
but when we added the new guy as a buddy, neither one of us could get him to come up.
He said When the call came in, two (2) video screens popped up and if he hit accept on
either one, it would decline on our end. (this happened no matter which MacBook Pro initiated the convo)
We then had the MacBook try to initiate the 3 way and it came up with an error that said
"computer can not initiate a multi-person video chat"
I've never even heard of that.
Is this a glitch, or a setting that needs to be changed?
Seems weird that the older models do it fine, but the new one is not configured right, but maybe we're missing something.

Welcome to the  Discussions
You are saying that, no matter who Hosts, when they invite the 10.6.1 Buddy he gets two Invite windows ?
This sounds like he is connected to the Internet twice.
On Sending the Visible Invite iChat does not check the validity of the Return Message.
You can be logged in twice for Text Chatting so it is not an uncommon state to exist.
However in most cases this is either two apps or two computers.
When iChat gets past the Visible Invite stage as only one reply get returned for the Acceptance it moves into sending a SIP invite separately on a different port and part of this Process is to confirm where the Visible Invite went to is where the SIP return data is coming from.
If there are two connections to the Internet at his end (and there are several causes) you will get an Error 7 showing when the Video chat is ended by all parties.
Error 7 = Remote IP Invalid
The Message you are getting may point to another problem and that is he is not on an Internet connection fast enough to join a 3 or 4 way Video chat.
He needs to have at least 384 kbps as an Upload and not capping the iChat Bandwidth below the 500kbps mark. (iChat Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down)

Multi Person Video Chatting

I have always been able to video chat and all of a sudden, it only allows me to video chat with one other person. I go to the connection doctor and under my capabilities, it says "Slow Network" next to "Join multi person video" and there is a red X. There is another macbook in my household and it runs fine with no problems in the network

iChat "reads" what the Internet Speed is as it starts up.
Lots of factors based around what is going on when iChat is Started up (end of Boot sequence as ichat is Login Item or waking from Sleep) can get a false figure written to the iChat .plist
I would start with a computer Shut down then Restart then launch iChat.
If that does not help delete com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat
This .plist is in Your HOme Folder/Library/Preferences which you will have to go to Manually

Multi person video chat with Face Time?

I use OS X Yosemite, the most advanced operating system for the consumer. Apple is even trying to get into the business world with this system. But unlike Microsoft (Skype) and Google (Hangouts) it does not support multi person conferencing. Is Apple serious about getting inside the conference rooms of industry and Government when it would not even satisfy the needs of individuals like me? When many years ago I decided to place my trust in Apple, foregoing Windows, Linux, etc, I hoped that the Cupertino engineers and designers would strive to meet the most basic needs of its users in terms of something widely used by the competition. Years have gone by without a serious effort to fulfill the needs of the elderly like me to enable us to see our children who live far away via our beloved Mac computers. It seems as if the Mac is always generations behind Windows in many respects such as this. Please Apple, wake up! We need you now!

Who can you video chat with?

who can you video chat with? is it only for other users of a mac computer? .. or can anyone with a webcam have chats with you via iChat AV? Someone please explain how you add people into a video chat. Thanks, its much appreciated,

If there is a camera displayed next to your friend in the contact list you can invite your friend by clicking on that camera icon. You need to use iChat for video chats with more than one friend the same time. (friends using iChat can invite you to a multi person video chat and add others if the iChat user initiates the video chat)
Windows users need AIM 6, the iChat application only runs on Mac OSX.

Multiple Person Video Conferencing

A few months ago I bought a MacBook for college. I have the cheapest one. A lot of my friend are getting their computers now and last night I video chatted for the first time. We are trying to figure out how to do a multiple person video chat, but it looks like are computers aren't equipped to do this. Is this really the case? If not, how do we set one up?

Video Chat Not Working with one person

On iChat I like to do video chat but with a certain person It says: "Starting Video Chat with: name" then it waits... and says There was a communication error during your chat. But my video chat works perfect with other people? How can I fix this?

Most likely it the way both end routing devices do NAT.

NAT is not a Standard but is a description of what is being done and can be done various ways.
Not allow implementations by manufacturers are compatible with other manufacturers implementations.

My ichat will let me send video chats requests, but it will not let me accept them. What should i do? Also, sometimes it tells me i cannot add a 2nd or 3rd person to an existing chat because it is connected to AOL's relay servers. What does this mean?

Unfortunately, most of my advice is in the "hindsight is 20-20" category.
First off, I would never have purchased the peripheral accessories until the 14 day return period had expired. Second, you learned the hard way what the "14 days" really means.
Too bad you didn't do any homework, reading this and other forums and tech sites. Even word of mouth from others. That, more than anything could have steered you towards different phone choices from the get-go and I will leave that there with no further comment other than to say most of the issues you described have been discussed in this forum, ad nauseam.
Once you got into the refurbished phone exchanges, that is where things really went haywire. What someone tells you over the phone is a sketchy proposition, and when it comes down to it, it's your word against theirs.
I think Verizon tried to make it right, though. Remember, they don't make the phones. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
You stated yourself you were a satisfied Verizon customer before this. Had the first two phones performed as they should, you would still be a satisfied Verizon customer.
Doubt any of that will make you any happier, but after you went through the effort of writing such a long post, I thought I'd try.

Can't see the person I am video chatting with but they can see me?

I use iChat 3.1.9 and when I video chat I can only see myself and not the person I am chatting with? The other person can see me but I can't see them? In the past there would be two boxes that showed the other person (larger box) and then myself (in a smaller box). Any tips on what to do?

Can video chat with everyone but 1 person

My father and I both have iSights, yet for some reason we cannot connect to each other to video chat. However, both of us have successfully connected to other people for video chats, so I am completely confused. I am connecting wirelessly via a Netgear WTG624 v2 router, and my father is using an RCA broadband wireless router/modem model #DCN725. He has both a 700MHz G4 iMac and a 1.2Ghz G4 iBook. Neither machine can successfully connect to mine. All machines are running Tiger with the latest version of iChat. What happens when we try to connect is the other person will receive the invite, accept, and then it will say Starting connection with... and then it will say connection cancelled cause <whoever initiated the session> failed to respond. Any ideas on why this could be happening? thanks so much!

I have had exactly the same problem - both of us could connect to the Apple test accounts, but not to each other. We do now have a working connection though. I'm not sure this is the solution for sure, but when I was running iChat in debug mode, I could see that it thought I had multiple IP addresses. Because I run Little Snitch, I can see the outbound connection attempts being made, and when the connection didn't work, it was because it was trying to connect to a "private" IP address configured on the other person's computer, rather than their public IP address.
What I did was each of us went into System Preferences, Network, and for the Show: dropdown menu at the top selected Network Port Configurations. We then unchecked every network port except for the one we were using for our internet connections. This included disabling extra ports that were there for programs such as Parallels, whose IP address my iChat was trying to connect to.
We then both quit iChat, and restarted, and we could communicate.
I don't know if this is the answer for everyone, but my theory is that if you have more than one network port configured with an IP address, iChat gets confused as to which one it needs to map through the firewall.
