3 SATA and 1 PATA config problem

I have been using 2 non-RAID SATA drives and 1 DVD drive and now want to add an additional SATA drive.   No matter what I change in the BIOS for the SATA/PATA config, I can not get this 3rd SATA to be seen.
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Rick

You don't say which board specifically you have but since you are adding a 3rd SATA drive, I assume it's an FIS2R with Serial1-4 connectors and IDE1-3 connectors.
I'll also assume you are adding the SATA drive to Serial3 or 4.
Serial3&4, and IDE 3 are on the Promise controller(a seperate controller from the Intel one where all your other stuff is located). The only place to activate this controller in the Bios is Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>Promise Controller-Set to "As SATA" if you have no interest in setting up a Raid here.
Save Bios and you should see a very quick screen flash during the next boot with the drive info. There's nothing to configure in "As SATA" mode.
When XP boots it will probably find a "new device". Choose not to install drivers. Then load your MSI CD and  select to install the Promise U-SATA driver for WinXP.
You should now be able to partition/format the drive if it isn't already.

• Problems with SATA and 865-Neo Series 2

Hi All,
My configuration is as follow:
MS-6278, 1GB OCZ RAM, Enermax 465VE P/S, Ti42008x, Seagate 250 and 320 SATA Perpendicular drives - no raid setup.
Okay - So I have 2 SATA drives and 2 PATA CDROMS in the computer.
Everything has been working fine until last night.
What happens now is that when I boot up the computer, the post screen comes up, all drives are detected and I get a single beep. Then the computer sits there. I watch the HDD light, and after the first initial seek and detect - the HDD never moves again.
I also tried booting off a CD by hitting F11 during the boot up tests. I get the option to select a CD drive, and select it, nothing happens. Stuck at post screen.
No power outages, no weird behavior up until I soft rebooted the machine. Since then I can't get past the BIOS.
I did do a factory BIOS reset and then I was able to boot using the Windows XP CD, but couldn't find the drives in recovery mode (since the SATA driver hadn't been loaded).
I tried leaving the working settings alone and disconnected the power to the SATA driver, and still could not boot off the CDROM with SATA setup.
Any help, ideas? Is my motherboard dead or something?
Thanks in advance!

CPU - Intel 2.8 Hyperthreading.
Really weird.
So I took your suggestion and downloaded Seagate tools. Then I reset the BIOS so that I could boot from the CD. Of course, my SATA drives were not found. So I went back and activated the SATA in the BIOS. This time, I put left the Seagate disk in and tried F11. Bingo - I was able to run the CD. Then I ran the File System and Quick Disk checks. The File system test said that both of my drives had files errors. The util said I needed to fix the files using the Windows disk.
Then I quit. I have three CD drives - so I left the Seagate disk in, and put in knoppix and windows. I attempted to boot of the Windows disk and got a cannot book NTLOADER error, then it went to the hard drives and started booting up the OS!
I rebooted once, no problems!
i am running Scandisk now on the boot drive - no errors on 1, 2, 3/5 stages - stage 4 in progress now.
I will keep you posted.

• SATA and PATA port Selection on P965 Neo - Advice please!

Hello,
I am just waiting for my parts to arrive, including the P965 Neo. I was wondering about the JMicron controller and the ICH8 Intel SATA ports and how to best use them.
My setup will be one SATA 320gb HD and one PATA DVD writer.
My question is where best to connect these? I don't want or need NCQ or RAID, so can I connect the HD to one of the serial port of the ICH8 and just have the DVD drive connected to the JMicron?
Do I need to install the JMicron driver at all?
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the reply.
If I want to use only the IDE channel for my DVD drive (HDD will be on ICH8 SATA port), can I install the JMicron driver after I have installed Windows XP?
I don't have a floppy for this build, so I want to avoid having to 'F6' at install time.
Thanks once again.

• K8T Neo - FIS2R (model 6702) SATA and RAID Problems = Hair Loss

Hi All,
new to the forum, have searched but nothing like my problem exist.
I have a K8T Neo FIS2R M/B and trying to get a single SATA HDD working for my secondary drive. primary is a IDE which works well and I want to leave it.
I have plugged in the SATA HDD into the SER 1 port ( Promise 237 ?)  anyhow the bois at startup or post recognises the drive, but then says soemthing like you have set up raid before F1 for setup F2 to continue to boot.
I have pressed both f1 and F2 at various time, but it appears that it want to turn the single drive into a RAID system, which is not possible with one drive !!....
Anyhow windows XP then boots up and loads a RAID driver and also the promise RAID drivers.  the real problem is that XP sits and waits for the raid which never comes and during startup on XP. it is extremely slow.
Does anyone have any ideas. I am not that computer techy as you can see by the description, but it appears that I cannot get into the RAID bios to turn it off.. I have zapped the bios to try and reset it. basically i am loosing my hair ove this.
if anyone had some step by step instructions how to prevent raid from switching on at the bios and then in XP it would be greatly appreciated
Jeff

Hi All,
Sorry for the slow reply, retrieving the box from the bottom of the swimming pool !!!
I set it to SATA as you have indicated Hans, I did check that setting. Thankyou for checking.
Spray, I have tried the P20378 setting as well. You indicate that you need to press F6 when installing the OS. I have WinXP running already on an IDE master and am trying to set the SATA up as a secondary disk drive.
As I indicated above, the machine runs slowly to the point of it being a 486 when I use either promise or Via controllers.
I have since removed the drive and are now having problems with XP on boot up/startup. The thing seems to hang or go slowly when the horizontal bar runs across under the Windows XP logo. I have turned everything off in the bios both Promise and Via.  I am at a loss as to why:
1 it runs slowly with the SATA drive in ( also does not show all the auto loading icons near the clock)
2. why it hangs when I remove it and turn both SATA controllers off in the bios.
I have a feeling that I may have corrupted part of the registry playing around. Any thoughts... going bald :-)
I really appreciate the feedback so far

• P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
Regards

• WCS and WLC WLAN Config not fully in sync

Hi,
We're facing the issue WCS and WLC WLAN Config is not fully in sync. WLC  showing server 1 is IP:10.160.22.151, Port:1812 but WCS server showing none even  after click on “Audit” button. Any idea how to resolve this issue? Is this causing any wireless problem? Attached is screen captured. Thanks for your help.

You mentioned "audit". Have you done a WCS audit so the WLC and WCS are in SYNC?
If you make a change on the WLC you will not see it in WCS UNLESS they are SYNC. You will see the term "mismatch".

• How to install drivers for ati radeon 3200?and how to config xorg.co ?

how to install drivers for ati radeon 3200?and how to config xorg.conf?

mawch wrote:how to install drivers for ati radeon 3200?and how to config xorg.conf?
Hello
I am using ati hd 3200 which is integrated with my motherboard. If you are using arch you can download & install through pacman. The package is named like catalyst*. You can install them by issuing as root user
#pacman -Sy
#pacman -S -l | grep -i catalyst
#pacman -S catalyst catalyst-utils
After installation reboot your machine in runlevel 1. (single mode).  Ensure "fglrx" module is loaded correctly using
#lsmod | grep -i fglrx
If the resultant output have "fglrx" part  the module is loaded correctly. The next step is to create a working /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Backup your current xorg.conf if needed.
#cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkup
Then issue
#aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
This will create a new xorg.conf file. Now we can test our confign.
#telinit 3
I am using runlevel 3 to avoid graphic messup!!
issue
#gdm
If you graphical login screen works correctly there is nothing to do more except adjust your monitor resoloution as you like.
To know your ati driver is working correctly issue as root
#fgl_glxgears
If gears are rolling happily it seems correct. You can also know more about installed ati driver
#fglrxinfo
Now the installed driver version is in the output
If there is any problem try following

• Workgroup Bridge and local Wifi Config

Hi all, hoping you can help me with this, just need an other brain as mine is empty as I've been staring at this for too long!!!
What I'm trying to config is to have a standalone local WLAN (Built into a VAN) running on the 2.4ghz and then also have a workgroup bridge on the 5ghz to the corporate lan.
Setup is this:
2960<-->1142(autonomous)   <--Workgroup bridge on 5Ghz-->  1131(Lightweight)<3560>--<5508WLC> (hope that makes sense!!)
So  far I have the bridge working, the 1142 connects to a ssid on the 1131  using psk. I can see the 1142 as an assosiated client on the wlc and I  can ping the the lan from the 1142 so I'm happy the bridge is working.
Clients  connected to the 2.4ghz ssid on the 1142 can only ping through as far  as the AP(1142) I can't seem to get the traffic to pass across the  bridge, is there something I need to do to link the 2.4 to the 5ghz  bridge link?
Any help always appreciated, cheers.

dmantill - Thanks for your link. I have read through and checked my config but my plan is to have a number of clients, all dhcp assigned, connecting to the do0 int for local wlan breakout.
I'm not sure that the passive config will help me there.
Steven - I have enabled the wgb on the do1 int and I am connecting clients on the do0 int for local wlan breakout. Enabling the WGB has not disabled the other radio on my setup.
I was running 7.0.98.0 but have today upgraded to 7.0.98.218 on my WLC but that has not helped.
From what I can tell it looks like my problem just lies with routing traffic across the 2 radios. My local clients can ping as far as the WGB and if I CLI into the WGB AP I can ping the corporate lan on the otherside of the bridge and can also ping from the lan to the WGB. I just cannot seem to get the 2 ssid's to route between each other.
Here's my WGB config, hope this brings some more ideas!!
Cheers,
Jason.

• Audio Config" problem after upgrading to 7.6

I have only had my ipod one week. It is working beautifully. My problem is that I can no longer charge it or add songs to it because I can not open itunes. The previous version worked beautifully on my computer. After I upgraded to 7.6, it stopped working and I get an Audio Config. problem everytime I try to open it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but it does not help. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

I have had my ipod a few weeks - but have nothing but problems letting itunes run the syncing, sometime it works and sometimes it does not. I had to reset my ipod 2 times already just to keep song on here, should have gone with Zune or Sonys (what my wife has) they are not having a single issue...
I would like to add my voice to his - I upgraded to 7.6, it stopped working and I get an Audio Config. problem everytime I try to open it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but it does not help. What do I need to do to fix this problem ! ! ! ! ?

• Does the HP Envy 17t line have 2 SATA bays or 1 SATA and mSATA?

Does the Envy 17t line have 2 drive bays?  If so, is it 2 SATA bays or 1 SATA and 1 mSATA? Also, on the hardware selection screen:
If I choose that option, will you guys at HP install Windows on the SSD, instead of on the hard drive?  I found 256GB SSDS that are a lot cheaper than $295, but I searched around and found that HP apparently puts a restriction on the BIOS that prevents you from booting from an internal drive that you added.
EDIT: Perhaps I could also get the 256GB SSD and add my own hard drive.  But I still need to know if it has 2 SATA or 1 SATA and 1 mSATA.

OK, so....
1) why do you expect me to read the whole manual?
2) I am aware that replacing a hard drive will void warranty.  I am not planning to replace a hard drive but rather add a hard drive in the second drive bay.
What I need to know is what hard drive ports are there, mSATA, 2 SATAs, etc. I have no idea what they mean when they say "support M.2 SATA".  Does that mean it supports M.2 SATA or is it an M.2 SATA port??
EDIT: apparently M.2 SATA is only for SSDs, since I can't find any M.2 SATA hard drives.
So what I know now is that there's 1 M.2 bay for an SSD, but I don't know what type of port the second drive bay has.
Hi,
You did not read my reply too: I did not tell you to read the whole manual, I read it for you and clearly noted : " Please also check the following manual (page #2 and page #66) " The manual also show you port and type of the SSD   22 something, I will let you to find out.
Good luck.

• Shopping for new HD: Difference between SATA and SATA II? / Compatibility?

I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.
Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive [??], but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.)
Kinda confusing trying to choose the right drive, so any help is appreciated.
Also, am wondering if there are any connectivity parts (power cable, SATA cable, screws, etc.) in particular that wouldn't come supplied with the drive. (I'll be ordering a retail drive, not OEM or refurb, so hoping it might come with everything I need.)
TIA,
Steve

Tom,
Thanks for the info. I don't see the 250GB w/ 16MB cache drive that I was looking for, but OWC has a very good price on the 500 GB drive. A few questions for clarification:
- Re: +"The later model SATA II drives often have a jumper to limit transfer rates to 150."+ -- Any tips on finding out if these jumper switches are present in a particular drive? OWC doesn't specify this, and this info seems to be generally hard to find.
- Re: +"...some are SATA I/II which are designed to work on both types."+ -- Same problem here... I'm not finding any info in the various drives' specs on this. To make this easier on myself, I'd rather get a drive that I don't have to mess with jumper switches, or at least be able to determine if a particular drive will present SATA I / II issues. Any additional info you (or others) can provide may be helpful.
- Will upgrading to a drive with 16MB cache give me an improvement in performance? And are there any compatibility issues with my particular G5? (I'm assuming a 16MB cache drive will work fine with my machine, and based on my reading they do provide a speed boost.)
Thanks for any info...

• SATA and HD LED

Before I installed my SATA drive, my hard drive LED worked just fine with my PATA drive.  Ever since I installed the SATA drive, the hard drive LED no longer works.  Is this typical that it wouldn't work with the SATA and only with PATA drives?
I've check to make sure the connection didn't come lose and the connection is just fine.
Thanks

That used to be the case with my K7N2 Delta-ILSR but since switching to the K7N2 Delta2 Platinum the hard drive LED works fine with SATA.

RE: SATA Bus speed:
Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

When I receive my used Zen player and want to clean it out and restore it to it's original config,
what should I do and in what order? ie:? firmware update, application download, charge the player etc...
Thanks so much. I know I've asked alot of newbie questions but I've never bought a product before without the included software.

Re: Zen 32GB and CreativeMediaSource organizer potential problem?OBeen addressed on another forum. Yes, CMS5 will be useable with the player so you don't really need to install anymore software for it. If you insist on having more then this is what you can install. It is for XP . For converting Video files to play on the player I use & recommend this one has a preset for the player fast simple & free. The first thing you should do is charge the player fully. You may not need to do any firmware updating since the player has been previously owned & has most likely been done. Even if it has not I personally don't think firmware should be meddled with unless it is absolutely? necessary .
