3 Specific Issues With 10.7 Lion (Safari, iCal, Mail)

I have 3 specific issues with Lion that I seem unable to fix. Note that these issues did not exist before my upgrade to Lion.
1. Safari 5.1.5 & "White Screen":
If I open more than 3 or 4 Safari windows at a time, suddenly the winsows switch to "white screen", and try and reload (even windows that are sitting on the dock). About 50% of the time, they don't reload and I am stuck with white screens. So I have to quit Safari and then re-open.
Safari then tries to reload the pages all at once (which slows down my MacBook). I have de-slected "Restore Windows" in System Prefs/General, but Safari tries to do so anyway.
2. Mail 5.2 & having to delete e-mails twice:
When I delete an e-mail sent to my .Me address, it deletes and then comes back again (when I switch to a different mail box). Then I have to delete it a second time. This onl;y happens with the .Me e-mails. I have tried deleteing that account and then setting it up again, but the same thing happends evey time.
3. iCal 5.0.2:
When I launch iCal either manually or automatically (on start-up), it takes a good 60 seconds to actually open (lots of bouncing around on the dock & that's about it), even though I have "Restore Windows" de-selected in System Prefs/General.
Any help in solving these issues would be greatly appreciated, especially as they effecty the 3 applications I use the most and therefore effect my MacBook's performance greatly.

Solved!
A Workaround:
Get the Webkit Nightly Build , download and add to your App Folder, make it the Default browser, follow the instructions to show your homepage, after this you almost done, than download
RCDefaultApp, open System Preferences launch RCDefaultApp, go under Apps, search for Webkit and mark all all associations, Safari is no more dfeault for something, after this, go to Extensions Pane and search for the safariextz Extension, now set it to Webkit as well, now you are most up to date and Webkit updates more often than Safari ever did ^^
Enjoy

  • Issues with Wikipedia website on Safari

    Hi,
    I've had a couple issues with using Wikipedia on Safari.  The longest one I've been having is when after searching for and/or going to an article page using the search box on the Wikipedia website at the top right.  After entering a search and/or going to an article page, if I use the Cmd + [ keys to go back (or Cmd + ←) to the previous page relatively soon afterwards (immediately or say just a couple minutes later), after I release the Cmd and [ keys, the vast majority of the time Safari will behave as if I had pressed Enter in the search box on the previous Wikipedia page, loading the search page for Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=&title=Special%3ASearch).  Sometimes it will enter in what I had searched for on that page and then behave as if I'm searching for that page again and enter and return the results of that search again.  This replaces any pages from the history navigation beyond that point, which can be annoying some if I have a couple of pages that I had gone to beyond that page.  And sometimes, it doesn't do this re-searching, it'll just behave normally like it should and used to and just go back to the previous page, which is all I want it to do.  Like I said, the vast majority of the time it doesn't do this.
    It only does the "re-search" after I let go of the Cmd key.  If I keep holding it down, Safari will do the re-searching thing only once I let go of the Cmd key.  If, while still holding down the Cmd key and after I have navigated back to a page where I used the search box recently and then I press another key, such as the Shift, Option, or the other Cmd key (all while still holding down the first Cmd key...) if won't do any of what I'm talking about and behave normally.  This happens only on Safari as far as I know.  I think this started happening with my (2007 I think...) white MacBook when I upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and to Safari 6.0, and this problem carried on on my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, even with any OS or Safari updates.
    I'm also unable to play any audio files with the player on Wikipedia pages.  I tried downloading the plugins they talk about on their media help page (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_help_(Ogg)) but nothing has worked so far.  When I press to play an audio (Ogg?) file, it'll play no audio and the elapse time will just loop over and over the first :03 seconds, but again with no audio playing.
    The most recent one is when I think after the more recent updates for Safari 6.0 in the last couple of months.  In Wikipedia, they have numbered reference footnotes, and when you put your mouse cursor over the number it would show a box over the number showing you reference information for that footnote.  Usually the reference is a website with a clickable link to the source reference.  Even if it's not a website link, it would show the box right above the footnote number showing you the reference information, which was a really neat and useful tool on Wikipedia.  Now, if they are footnotes close to the top of the page, they appear basically right above the footnote number, basically like how it should and used to be.  But as I move further and further down the page, the footnotes will appear further and further above the footnote number.  The article page doesn't have to be that long until the footnote reference starts not even show on the same page.  It is so far away, that it is above the webpage view and cannot be seen at all.  If there are any links for the footnote, I have to quickly move my mouse cursor over to the little popup reference before it disappears.  It disappears automatically as you move your cursor away from the footnote number.
    These aren't huge issues I know, just kind of annoying and a little inconvenient to me.  I use Wikipedia all the time for general info, so can be a bother to me sometimes.  Has anyone else had any similiar issues to these and is there anything I can do about them?  Or are these just bugs I'll have to live for now?  I'm guessing people will tell me to upgrade to OS X Mavericks.  That might hopefully work, but anyone know of issues like these and solving them if it doesn't?  Thanks for any help.

    The workaround for the moment is to go into about:config and set the html5.enable boolean from true to false.

    Happy to report that iTunes Match has returned to working like normal on iTunes 10.7 on my computer today. If any iTunes engineers read this thread, I really appreciate the fix.
    Has it returned to normal for you?

  • OS X LION Issues with Full-Screen; iPhoto, Image Capture & Mail

    Hello,
    I'm experiencing un-Apple-like issues (bugs) with Lion in Full-Screen mode.
    For example - iPhoto doesn't seem to like Full-Screen mode. If iPhoto is open and I connect a camera, for which I prefer Image Capture to retrieve my pics... Image Capture opens 'behind' the full-screen iPhoto, but I can't get to it. Image Capture shows as open on the menu bar in iPhoto's full-screen mode. If I go to the desktop (where it should be opening) Image Capture isn't 'on top' and clicking it takes me back to iPhoto full-screen
    Similarly, if I get mail and return to the desktop (the only way to see the dock) and I click on the 'Mail' app icon - I am catapulted into Image Capture... or iPhoto. Returning to the Desktop to click the Mail icon from the dock... takes me to Image Capture... or iPhoto. The 3rd try takes me to the Mail.app which is usually always open and in full-screen mode.
    While I'm complaining about bugs, I'd like to mention that I am fully dismayed by the loss of control in full-screen mode when using apps such as Mail or iPhoto. The Mail app opens an email to edit (such as a reply) but you can't access any other mail docs to 'cut and paste' info from. I can only click SEND or CANCEL.
    What if I don't want to CANCEL? I just want to go to another email and cut a piece to paste.. I have to exit full-screen mode which allows me to open two email documents at once, then cut and paste. Essentially Mail in Full-Screen is only a reader... not a work area. I can only access the document I have open, since it greys out the Message Viewer. You can't click on the message viewer nor access any of the features of Mail.app. You can only write your email and either Cancel or Send. Where is the 'hold on a second while I go cut and paste'? I don't want to cancel.
    Can't seem to use Safari since I'm constantly three-finger swiping it away. My cursor hovers over a text field and suddenly it's zooming in and locks text input. I have to iPhone-like swipe to expand to exit this inadvertent partial (very slight) zoom. Sometimes the zoom is so partial that I can't figure out what's going on until I just exit full-screen mode, close the window and start over.
    Seems like I'm starting over and over and over... just to do simple things. Inadvertent zooming, inadvertent 3-finger returning to Desktop, inadvertent changing apps... ugh.
    I'm willing to let go of the old and embrace the new future but so far it's been pretty uncomfortable for me to constantly monitor my overly sensitive trackpad gesturing combined with constant bugs and glitches. I'll save complaining about iPhoto's over-simplification (apparently for dummies) like the new Edit menu, Export menu, etc.. since it's more iLife than Lion related. Rate Lion: 2 out of 5 stars for ease of use & features complicated by unrefined software issues.

    I've tried follwoing these instructions but I have an issue with
    # Create snort user. The intention is to let user snort have access only to the snort database.
    $ sudo createuser -U _postgres -P snort
    Password:
    Enter password for new role:
    Enter it again:
    Shall the new role be a superuser? (y/n) n
    Shall the new role be allowed to create databases? (y/n) n
    Shall the new role be allowed to create more new roles? (y/n) n
    It keeps telling me "could not connect to database postgres: could not connect to server: No such file or directory"
    I'm running OSX Mountain Lion, and have verified using serveradmin status postgres that it is up and running.

  • Permission/Privilege Issues With Mac OS Lion

    I created a new user account after I installed Lion, transferred my files over, and now I'm having issues with my account. I don't know if permissions and privilages are responsible for the issues, but seemingly so. I also have to mention that when I was changing over user accounts, I ended up wanting to change the short names on both my old and new accounts, so I used the root user to do so. Here are some problems I've been experiencing:
    - When I open system preferences, it always opens up to the General pane. No matter what.
    - After restarting, certain windows that I had open at a certain time keep opening up, no matter if I closed them out and had completely new windows open.
    - Preferences in certain applications will not save. Audacity opens up each time I start my computer, there is a tick box for show this screen when starting Audacity, I untick it, but it still opens up each time. Photoshop gives me a message that my preferences can't be saved because I don't have the right privilages. Textedit keeps opening up to a certain file I had open a couple of days ago, and when I try to save a new document, it gives me an error. Safari only remembers history from a couple of days ago. And when I try to reset Safari, and reopen it, the same old history is displayed.
    - When I try to move files to my desktop or to the Trash, I have to authenticate it.
    I tried Repairing the disk, repairing permissions, inserting my Mac os leopard disk and doing the same, and using the Reset Password utility on the Mac os installation disk to repair permissions to my home folder, but nothing is working.

    Hi everyone, I have found a solution. This worked for me:
    1) Create a new user account. Make sure it has a desireable name, otherwise you're going to want to change it later, and that will cause permission issues. (check if preferences are saving in this temporary new account, if not, I can't help you.)
    2) Transfer all the files you want to keep by putting them in the SHARED folder.
    3) Change permissions to the folders and files in your shared folder by right clicking and clicking on GET INFO. Then go to the very bottom of the popup menu and unlock the picture of the lock. Next change permissions so that your new account will have permission to view the files. You might have to add your new account to the list by pressing the plus button, or simply allow staff the read and right, or just let everyone read and right. Next click on the gear menu (the one with the little gear on it.) and click on APPLY TO ENCLOSED ITEMS.
    4) Go to your new user account and take the things in the shared folder and put them where you had them in your older account.
    Now you have a new user with the files you want, the permissions right, and preferences will save!
    I really really really hope this works for you. I know how extremely frustrating it was. It worked for me, and I am so relieved now.

  • Browser specific Issue with af:fileDownloadActionListener/ component.

    Hi all,
    We are facing an issue with <af:fileDownloadActionListener/> component.
    The issue is that when we download a particular file to the local system/machine, after downloading the file using <af:fileDownloadActionListener/>, none of the actions/links/button work on the page thereafter. We have to do a browser refresh or switch the URL.
    After doing some investigation, it is looking like a browser specific issue, as this is reproducible only on chrome but not on firefox or IE.
    The UI component used is <af:fileDownloadActionListener/> component. Below is the snippet of the code. Is there anything to be specified for af:fileDownloadActionListener?
    <f:facet name="buttonBar">
    <af:panelGroupLayout partialTriggers="expPoll expProgess" id="gsexppgl11">
    <af:commandButton text="#{uib_o_w_w_r_WebCenter.LABEL_DOWNLOAD}"
    shortDesc="#{uib_o_w_w_r_WebCenter.LABEL_DOWNLOAD}"
    id="expClientp"
    disabled="#{!pageFlowScope.o_w_w_i_v_b_l_WebCenterExportBean.showExportButtons}">
    <af:fileDownloadActionListener filename="#{pageFlowScope.o_w_w_i_v_b_l_WebCenterExportBean.fileName}"
    contentType="application/force-download; charset=utf-8"
    method="#{pageFlowScope.o_w_w_i_v_b_l_WebCenterExportBean.dumpOAROnClient}"/>
    </af:commandButton>
    </af:panelGroupLayout>
    </f:facet>
    Anyone has faced this issue before? Is this a known issue?
    Thanks,
    Ankush

    Jdveloper version is 11g. But we saw this issue with 12c as well.
    I have reproduced this in a standalone application as well. I had a page on which I just had a button attached to the file download component. And I faced the similar situation - works fine on IE/FF but causing issues on chrome/safari.

  • Issues with ITunes on Lion Mac OS X 10.7

    I succesfully upgraded to Lion and everything seemed to be fine until I started trying each of the programs. I had previously upgraded to Ilife  '11 (unless I did something wrong) but I can't get  IPhoto to open, though my photos can be seen if I set up the screensaver to Iphoto. Garageband and Imovie work properly.
    My second issue is that when connecting my Iphone, it doesn't show on the Itunes Devices section. I updated Itunes already but the problem is istill there.
    Anyone can help?
    d.

    This sounds like a compatibility issue with the software you are using. I recommend you contact the software vendor for a Lion-compatible update.

  • Issue with Google search on Safari

    Hello: I am having the same issue with my iPad and iPhone 6. I think it may be related to iOS 8. when I was running iOS 7 whenever I would search for something in the Google search bar with and Safari the search bar would start to get suggestions what I may be searching for. For example if I would type in IT it would suggest that I was searching for the word Italy. Ever since I up dated to iOS 8 the suggest feature no longer works. I was wondering if this is an Apple issue and they will resolve it in a future iOS update or is there a problem with my settings. FYI in my Safari settings the default search is set to Google.
    Thank you.

    I have been having this same issue since the upgrade, and I cannot seem to fix it. I have restored, but iTunes won't let me revert back to pre 8.0/2.
    Have not found any kind of resolution to this problem, and it doesn't seem to be a wide issue, as this is the only post I have seen on it.
    Really annoying.

  • Problem with fonts display in safari and mail ???

    hello !
    sometimes i have problems with fonts display
    safari use a mathematics font instead of my preferences fonts
    i have to copy-paste in a text-editor to see the right font !!!
    i have the same problems sometimes in mail
    is anybody have infos about that problem ?
    thanks !
    p.s. mail version 1.3.11 - safari version 1.3.1

    OS X cocoa apps like Safari and Mail don't like non-Unicode fonts using common names that replace Latin with symbols or other scripts. Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic are common culprits. You need to remove such fonts to solve the problem.

  • Anyone having issues with Self-Signed SSL-certs on mail servers?

    Can't get it to allow connecting via SSL to outgoing mail servers with self-signed certificates. Problem did not exist in earlier versions of OSX as far as I know.

    YES. I have a cert from lunarpages, where my accounts are hosted. I'm seeing two issues, and they are different for the different servers at lunarpages:
    1. Multiple logins from different machines --> problem
    2. Multiple accounts accessing same server --> problem
    So, with 1 account on one of lunarpages machines, I can have several machines running Mail with ssl on at the same time and get no problem (that is, once I've saved the certificate and marked it trusted). But as soon as another account (my wife's email on the same domain, for example) tries to access the same server, it gives me an ssl error, a choice to save that cert. and if I do then my account will generate the ssl error. Seems like only one account can have the certificate.
    On another account on a different lunarpages machine, I can't have several machines running Mail at the same time, only the first will get through and the rest will give an SSL error.
    Lunarpages says they can't find a problem, though my last email with them told me to use TLS rather than SSL. Of course, there's no way to specify that in Mail anyway, but I'd thought Mail automatically used TLS anyway, and I'm running the right ports (587 for smtp, 993 for incoming).
    Feels like it's an issue with Mail or the OS's handling of certificates. Any clues on a fix will be most appreciated as this is getting annoying. I've had to turn off SSL on my wife's and daughter's accounts just so that I can use it. And I have to quit Mail so that on the other account I can get my mail on my iPhone. Having to quit Mail on my main work machine is frustrating -- if I forget to do it I can't get mail.

  • Issues with 10.9 synchronising Yahoo! mail

    I'm not sure if others are experiencing this with the upgrade, but it seems I am unable to sync contacts using Yahoo mail and Mac OS X 10.9.
    Even after re-moving my Yahoo accounts completely as well as any other accounts using the Address Book application, deleting both the following two files below:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBookSourceSync
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
    All other sync services, namely Calendar and Mail seem to not have any connectivity issues.
    The following error keeps on showing up in Console:

    Does anyone out there have any good ideas on how to fix this?

  • Many Specific Issues with Mac Performance after Yosemite Upgrade

    I have a MacBook Pro Retina 15”--Late 2013
    Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite, I have experienced the following problems:
    Preview locking up after I attempt to open a document or photo
    None of my files will be visible in certain views (e.g., Download Folder will appear empty)
    Trash and Junk Folders will disappear in Mail
    Spotlight will not search for anything when I attempt to use it
    Google apps (e.g.,  Search, News, Gmail, Maps) will usually not open initially when I try to open them in Safari—will just time out with a message that website will not respond… If I close out the tab, then try to re-open it, it usually works. I also tried them out in Chrome, and they seem to load with no problems.
    Initially I contacted Apple support. They had me delete several cache files, ran disk utility, etc. This seemed to help for a while, but problem returned.
    The next step: I performed a clean installation of Yosemite.  Eventually, the symptoms returned.
    Last step:  I took my computer to the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store.  The tech ran several diagnostics and found no problems.
    Finally, the Genius Bar tech. asked me how often I shut down my Mac;  I told him ‘not very often’.   His recommendation was that I restart my Mac every once in a while… (not specific on frequency)….
    Restarting it every couple of days seems to be the only thing that works…
    Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
    You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
            Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
            Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
            The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
    The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
    Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Issues with Filevault, Tiger, Dock & Safari lost pref. settings & iPhoto...

    Hope you experts out there can shed some light. Here's a recap-
    Nov 05 - we turned on Filevault. Since then, for a month or 2, restarting takes just a few minutes longer and a flashing earth icon appears before the apple spinning wheel. This no longer happens. All seems fine until now.
    Since Mon, I started backing up iPhoto library onto CD-R. No problem, though after burning a few CDs, "the drive failed to respond, unable to recover.." a few times, but after shut down & restart, finally ok.
    I also noticed Safari settings suddenly went back to default by itself, so rechecked all pref settings; next time mac was restarted, same thing happened except more bad things happened:
    A)- All bookmarks disappeared in bookmark menu & bookmark bar.
    B)- iPhoto won't run & load pictures.
    C)- Dock appeared as "default", all the application icons I previously added are gone!
    D)- iMovie icon became a "?" on the dock.
    E)- i Sync failed to sync due to "unable to login to .mac"; have a .mac a/c.
    So far what I've done with Apple Support:
    1- Under a test user, opened "Disk Utility", click "Repair Disk", i.e. the HD, but message appeared "No repairs were necessary". Test user then deleted, log off.
    2- Logged back in under my username, dragged the existing dock .plist file to trash. But after rebooting computer using the "control", "apple", "p" & "r" keys simultaneously, nothing is fixed.
    3- I've backed up all personal files, documents, and most of iPhoto Library on CD-R.
    4- I then performed an "Archive & Reinstall" of the OSX Tiger (http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107120) , with the box checked for Preserve Users and Network Settings". After installation, I also installed Software Update, but still nothing is fixed, i.e iPhoto won't run, dock is default, bookmarks on Safari are all gone, Backup to iDisk goes on & on for over 5 hrs & so I force quit, some files on iDisk can't be located right now.
    5- Today, I followed the article in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25695, created a test user again, pull the .sparseimage file, and "repair disk". It came back "no repairs were necessary". Closed Disk Utility, launched iPhoto, and it worked. I dragged a few pics, did some edits, and it was fine. So this is all good under test user. Does this process tell me the .sparseimage does not need repair and that it's not corrupted..?
    6- Logged back under my user, dragged "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" on desktop, deleted cache file, restarted the computer, and launched iPhoto. It's been 6 hrs, and iPhoto is still "loading photos" with spinning wheel.
    That said, this whole process really ruled out that it's not an iPhoto problem since it runs under the test user. It just won't work under my user name. Any idea or suggestion of what to do next... ???
    Regarding the dock settings, I have removed the old dock plist file, and rebuilt a new dock. So far, logging in & out, restarting the computer did not affect it. Safari Bookmark collections suddenly have all these folders appearing with default bookmarks, weird, not sure why? iSync, half hr ago, started working, since I've set it to sync bookmarks, iCal, Address book, I just saw all my original bookmarks under "Imported IE favorites" in the Collections column, though they are organized quite different. So I assume iSync did it.
    Here are some key questions:
    1- Cause: Are problems caused by Filevault, or something is wrong with my OS before I did "Archive & Install" ? After archive & install, testing iPhoto under test user, and doint step 5 & 6 above, iPhoto still not load pics after a window appeared to upgrade thumbnails. Could filenames of some photos being long have anything to do with it or could it be other reasons?
    2- Filevault failed to turn off after a few trials, with warning msg saying "filevault unable to turn off, unable to recover disk space". I found this article - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25635. But don't know how to solve this problem.
    3- iDisk - some files are lost, why?
    4- Backup program - won't even backup to iDisk, pending for over 6 hrs, why? When I backup things to iDisk, do files get stored in the "Backup" folder or "Documents" under the iDisk icon in the Finder window ?
    5- iMovie icon on dock is now "?", why? But then, I have iMovie HD. FYI - I upgraded to Tiger Apr 05, and iLife'o5 last July.
    I hope I make myself clear, so if anyone has any experience or insight with my problems, I'd appreciate so much.
    Thanks, Lucien

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It seems that you're problem may be system related rather than iPhoto. I suggest you do the following:
    1 - run Disk Utility and Repair disk permissions.
    2 - reboot into Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key during the boot process). This will perform the File System Check (fsck). At this time check iPhoto and Safari.
    3 - boot back into normal mode. If all is not well the download and reinstall the 10.4.6 COMBO updater followed by a permissions repair.
    4 - If iPhoto is still messed up, use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. It will create a new library and leave your current one untouched. It succeeds where the normal rebuild fails.
    My preference is to manually upload my photos to a folder on the HD either thru Image Capture or the Finder with a card reader - with iPhoto closed. Then if there's a crash iPhoto will not damage the AlbumData.xml file that is uses to record all the info on the imported files.
