3 to 4 mm black line on left side

Hi all I have a iMac 20 inch and have a 3 to 4mm black line down the left side of the screen. Could someone tell me if this is a fault or is this common. I have had the mac for 2 weeks and it appeared yesterday.
Thanks Les

Well, it appeared just as your 14 day return expired, so call Apple under the 1 year warranty. No it is not common or expected.

  • Pink line down left side of screen?

I recently popped an Arch CD into my newly (sort of) built computer and the install went great. I rebooted, and I was presented with a thin pink line down the left side of my screen. What is this thing (sorry for bad quality pictures. I used a phone camera)?
    Close Up:
    Full Shot:
Notice it only appears after the kernel is done and the bootscripts start:
A few months back, I installed Arch on the same machine with no issues. I also installed Gentoo earlier today and configured X on this PC, and there was no pink line. NOTE: This also appears when I boot the latest live cd.
    Kernel: 2.6.33-ARCH
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X1200 onboard
    Monitor connection: HDMI

Maybe a driver problem? You could try an older kernel or the 2.6.34 one in [testing].
I have something similar here on my AppleTV, the whole screen will go pink and then be reset to black during the boot sequence, pretty bizarre, happens with all nVidia GPU drivers (nv, nvidia, nouveau). Not entirely the same thing, but it's pink too...
Yeah what I probably will do is downgrade the kernel to an earlier version, most likely 2.6.32, because that has been known to work for me

  • Red vertical line on left side of iPhone4 screen.

I have a thin, red vertical line on the left side of my iPhone screen that appears on a black or dark background.  Anyone know what causes this and should I send my phone in for repair?  I've had this phone for about 3 months.  Thanks!

    Hi Brent,
I took it to apple service center. They did some checks and found out that the display has gone bad and they replced it with new one.
Did you try connecting other display (may be Apple Display or Dell monitor) using an adapter?  In my case the Apple service center people tried doing it and the display was appearing just fine without any green line. So the fault was in my MBP display.

  • Mini-DVI to s-video: black bar on left side

    Hi,
When outputting video through "the mini-DVI to s-video adapter" i have a black bar on the left side of my television.
It seems like the 1024*768 resolution is not able to completely fit the 4:3 area of my television (the image is to small).
    any ideas?
    thanks!

I'm absolutely sure everything is displaying and that the image is not deformed in any way.
So my conclusion is that the image is just smaller (in every dimension) than it should be and than it was before.
I will try a lower resolution later today.
thanks for your help and interest!

  • Can't wake G5, odd black square on left side

I've been having intermittent problems when trying to wake my G5. I have a KVM switch and everything has been work with no problems up until the last Security Update. Now, on occasions, when I switch to the G5, the desktop is still showing, when it should be the screen saver. Moving the mouse pops the arrow up to the left side of the display with a icon sized black box around it. The arrow can be moved down, but it jumps by the size of the icon. Requires a hard re-boot. I've repaired permissions several times. The problem is intermittent. I've check some of the logs, but nothing jumps out. Any ideas which log I should look in?

First, it would be a good idea to determine whether the problem is Software related, or Hardware. If software, then you could possibly remedy by restoration from a backup, or complete reinstall of the OS, if you don't backup.
Do a screenshot (Shift-Command-3), and view this screenshot on another computer. If it is visible, then it is definitely software related. However, I don't think it is. I think the coincidence wit the connection of a USB key is just that, coincidental. But we must eliminate the possibility before proceding.
If the screenshot does not show the "bar" or "strip", then you should really consider the problem to be hardware related. As the MBA is not really user serviceable, the next step would be taking it to an Apple Authorized Service Center or Apple Store Genius Bar for diagnosis and repair.

  • Line on Left SIde and Boxes around Headings in Disco Plus

Anyone have any insight into the issue:
When printing ANY table or Crosstab report from Plus, there is almost always a random line that prints on the left side margin. Also the headings/titles have light gray 'boxes' around them. I have tried ALL of the printing features/settings that are in Plus. I have been through the documentation for 10g (10.1.2.1) Disco Plus and have not found any information that could resolve my issue.
Has anyone experienced this when printing their Disco Plus reports for the following version. This is a major issue for some of out Finance reports as presentation quality is most important aspect of the reporting tool.
    Here is the version info:

  • Black Line Printed Down Side of Paper...

I've been noticing for a while that my Epson 3880 "keeps printing" after the image has been printed.  And I just figured out why.  I loaded some paper that is a little wider than 11x14 (12x14) but I print on it as if it's 11x14.  I printed an image (only 8x10 on the page) and now that a wider paper is in the tray I see that a black line is being printed down the side of the page.  It's a line that is actually being printed down the entire sheet.  When the paper isn't wider than what I've specified the print head just goes past the paper and "thinks" it's printing on the paper.
I've looked through all the print settings and can't find anything that would cause this (i.e. it's not a crop mark or a guide).  Why is this happening?
The printer is an Epson 3880 with current drivers and I'm using the current version of Photoshop CS5.

Anything?  It's only happening in Photoshop, other apps print fine.

I bought Lion from App Store recently and installed it successfully on my MBP. After few days when I left my machine running Lion from morning till evening I see a thin green line on the left side of the screen. I tried searching the web and tried few options like restarting the machine, resetting NVRAM and doing Apple hardware test (By pressing D while the machine boots). The Apple hardware test did not detect any problem. The green line still exists.
Please suggest me how to get rid of green line.

  • Horizontal lines on left side of screen

I am getting horizontal lines on the left side of my screen all of a sudden.  Any ideas on how to fix?

move the screen, do the lines change?
take a screenshot. If its not present in the screenshot, its the
    monitor or its feed cable.
if it is, its the logic board.
moving the screen back and forth, if it changes, its the monitor or cable of same or at connection to logic.

  • Black lines on either side of images in FCP Canvas

I'm posting this in the QuickTime forum because this happened since installing QT 7.1.
I use an app called Photo to Movie to do slow pans and zooms across still images rather than use the features within FCP, because it creates a nice smooth ripple free transition.
It is set up to create a five second 720x480 movie which I import into FCP.
Everything was going swimmingly until I installed QT 7.1 and now there's a 4 or 5 pixel black bar on either side of the image. It's also producing 640x480 movies for some reason.
Strange thing is that when I view the movie within QuickTime it looks fine, but when viewing the preview version in the Finder and also the Canvas in FCP the bands appear.
I reported the bug to the folks who make Photo to Movie, LQ Graphics, but also thought I'd report it here seeing as it's definitely a 7.1 issue.
BTW don't bother asking what version of this and that I have, everything is the latest.

Not answered, but none forthcoming either so closing this one out.

  • Prints Sometimes Have 1/4" Wide Faint Line On Left Side?

I've been using an HP C4385 ink jet printer to print my stuff and as a rule the prints are really excellent. In fact, in the old days the only way I would have been able to create prints this good was through the dye transfer process!
Alas, sometimes there is a line about 1/4" wide that runs from the top to the bottom of the print. It is always in the exact same spot, about 2.5" in from the left margin. Most often this problem occurs when I am printing at 8x10". Has anyone experienced a similar problem and if so were they able to determine what was the cause. I've done all the usual alignment/cleaning stuff and the problem persists. Tried calling HP Tech Support but although I've only been using this printer for about 5 weeks the warrantee ran out a few days ago as the printer was purchased more than 1 year ago.
    Thanks,
    Winston

Thought I would report back that I found out what was causing the stripe problem. A few days after I first noticed the stripe this time round I got an out of ink message from my HP 99 photo cartridge. After I swaped in a new cartridge I tried printing the images that got the stripe again and magic the stripe was gone. Not sure precisely how the low ink results in the stripe but it would appear that that was what was causing the problem...or at least that's what it looks like at this point in time.
    All best,
    Winston

  • Vertical dotted line along left side of screen

Hey everyone! I have a HP Envy d7 select edition with WIndows 8 OS. Brand new, just purchased last week. It already has a line in the screen and I don't know how to fix it. I'm also unable to access my university's network because it needs a new update (even though I just updated it and it was fine the day before.) WIndows update is not working for me. The program just freezes when I try to check for updates. I noticed the line after this occured. Thanks for any help!

    Hi there @alphy13
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are seeing pixels on one sude of the built in display, and that external monitors connected to the notebook are fine. I am happy to help with this.
Please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following, if you need help with that information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Since the lines do not appear on the external displays, it shows that your notebooks graphic adapter is good, and also your driver. It may be a setting for the resolution of your primary display, but it is more likely that the display is going bad.  But to help determine which it is, take a look at the following pages and see if anything matches, or helps to resolve the issue.
