3 Xraids with 2 windows servers config dilemma

I have two windows 2003 R2 servers going to a ATTO 3500 Fibre switch and they are connected to 3 xraids in a 8 port switch. Both servers see all the shares, but everytime I reboot a server each one wants to run a scandisk. If I have each one, hooked into one server and one server alone, it works great. But they both cant use them at the same time.
I am trying to setup a clustered exchange environment, thats my goal eventually and this is buggering up the mix.
my questions are:
1. Do I need some kind of special software on the servers?
2. Do I have to have a mac involved to use them?

Are you saying that you're sharing all storage to both servers simultaneously? If so do NOT do this. Fibre channel offers no arbitration and both computers think they are in charge and data corruption will result. This is equivalent to attaching two computers to the same hard drive without either being aware of the other one.
The solution to this is called SAN which adds a layer of arbitration to the fibre channel sharing system and prevents these kinds of conflicts. Apple does offer a product called XSAN that is commonly used with Xserve RAIDs but it is a Mac only product. I doubt XSAN is the solution you are looking for in a Windows environment but I can't offer a good Windows alternative using Xserve RAIDs. (That doesn't mean there isn't one.)

I like to introduce myself to the forum. My name is Ranj and I am the IT manager at Queensbridge School in Birmingham, UK.
Our school has recently purchased 44 iMacs with an Xserve and XRAID box.
We are school with mainly windows and unix servers and this reason for us buying a apple server was so we could lock the macs down using managed preferences which we have successfully done.
Our Xserve is connected to our active directory system, and from there it allows our students to login to the macs using there windows credetionals. As the apple server talks directly to AD it also connects to their home share folders.
The problem is my windows server only has a 400gb raid and my plan is to somehow migrate all the home folders from the windows 2003 server to our XRAID but am having trouble with it preserving the windows permissions.
I know that Apple can talk via SMB and if i moved the home directory data to the apple server i would still be able to see it on the windows side but am having trouble copying all the files and folders whilst keeping all the ownership and security information.
Does anyone know if there is a util or script which will allow me to do this. Has anyone successfully used robocopy (a microsoft tool) which i am familar with and managed to copy data from a windows server to an apple server.
If anyone can help me with this problem it would be most greatly appreciated.
I have to say I been a Windows user all my life but can now see why Apple Macs are a big deal, there are so much better at what they do compared to their window conterparts.

There seems to be an issue with opendns free servers

This is more of a "I found it" than a question as this seems to be an issue with the opendns free DNS servers related to certain torrent sites and the duckduckgo search engine. However any thoughts are appreciated.
While looking for a solution I followed troubleshooting steps found here to no avail regarding cookies (I'm accepting them from everyone including third party cookies and their dogs), clearing cookies (do that all the time as a matter of routine, did it again several times), clearing the cache (did that, got the T-shirt, now I'll never be naked) and checked the about:config setting (I forget which one but it was already set to 20, the default)
Note that I can eliminate these issues completely by setting my DNS to "automatic" however I've been using opendns free DNS servers for years and have changed nothing except when troubleshooting this issue.
The following is a detailed description. It can be confusing if you don't read it carefully:
I had this happen on several torrent sites however I can get through on others but when I choose the .torrent link I get the same problem on most like at: http://kickass.to/movies/genre/news/ and the KAT mirrors... on KAT I can get to the page but the .torrent links are at http://torcache.net and I am unable to get those .torrents at all. I've had this issue with more than a few torrents over the last couple of days and can't remember them all but further checking does seem like it's either particular torrent sites I can't access at all or on sites I can access but store their .torrent files on either torcache.net or thetorrent.org so there seems to be mixed issues, being able to see some pages but not get .torrent files from those sites if they're stored somewhere else.
On duckduckgo I get the "this site is untrusted" error.
Again, when I abandon the opendns DNS servers I've been using for years and go to "automatic" both of these issues disappear with no other changes. and I've done that several times just to verify the problem and even confirmed that the opendns server addresses are correct, which they are the same ones I've used for years.
I've emailed opendns and described the issue and they are completely confused and tell me "it must be your settings"

I have screenshots of the errors and thought there was a way to post them here but I don't see that.
The error on torrent sites is "The page isn't redirecting properly. FF has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. (and goes on to say blah blah cookies blah blah that I've checked and rechecked)
The error on duckduckgo is "This Connection is Untrusted. You have asked Firefox to connect securely to duckduckgo.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure." blah blah (you probably know the rest). I expect that I could add an exception but again the problem doesn't happen when using automatic DNS server detection.
I have no problems on other sites that I see.

IMO opendns is either doing this on purpose (unlikely) or they're under some sort of attack/being used to attack the specific torrent sites although I'm open to other explanations. I believe using the automatic setting for DNS is using my own ISP's DNS servers (which again, work fine... but still...)
I'd rather not use Google's public DNS servers as Google is to commercial these days and I think there's potential privacy issues.

Viewing Windows servers in finder

In Tiger, I was able to click on "Network" in finder and view all the Windows servers and computers on the domain my network connection was running through.
Now in Leopard, I can see all the Macs that are connected on the network but I can't see any Windows servers or computers. I have to use the "connect to server" option to connect to any Windows servers instead of just double clicking on them. Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

I found some other information on this on another site and I think it could be related to my smb.conf file possibly. I took a look at mine but I can't find anything that jumps out as needing to be changed or added.

Excel Automation with Interop - Windows Service - Microsoft Excel cannot access the file

I have a windows console application, which automates Excel. In our scenario the application gets called from a Windows Service. If the console app is executed directly everything works fine. If the console app is executed through the Win Service, we get
the following error when trying to open the excel file:
Unhandled exception Occured : 'Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'bla.xls'. There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path does not exist.
The file is being used by another program.
The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.'.'
The code snippet used to open the file:

The console app and windows service are running on a Win Server 2008 64-bit OS with Excel 2013 32-bit installed. The service is running with a special user account, which has all the right permissions on accessed files and folders. The excel process is also
started with the same account (I cheched that one).
I already tried to do the following, but to no avail:
Run excel.exe /automation -> worked fine
Created the folders and also gave full control to the account under which the service is run (even gave full control to Everyone)
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\Desktop
C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop
Configured DCOM
Excel Application -> Identity -> Specific user account

may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment.
If you are building a solution that runs in a server-side context, you should try to use components that have been made safe for unattended execution. Or, you should try to find alternatives that allow at least part of the code to run client-side.
If you use an Office application from a server-side solution, the application will lack many of the necessary capabilities to run successfully. Additionally, you will be taking risks with the stability of your overall solution.

Are there solutions to Compatibility Issues with Thunderbird, Windows 8.1 and Anti-Virus Software, e.g., MacAfee?

Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, Thunderbird freezes up and goes into "Not Responding" mode repeatedly every few minutes. My research indicates that it is a problem with compatibility with antivirus software, which obviously is needed with an e-mail program. How can this problem be solved, or is there an antivirus program that works seamlessly with Thunderbird and Windows 8.1?

Personally I use ESET NOD32. It is not cheap, but it is unobtrusive and appears to get the job done. Originally I was drawn there for their server protection, but since I no longer have windows servers that need is gone, but I see no reason to change.
Previously over the years I have used;
* Norton (Found it just to much embedded into the operating system. Something went wrong with it and Windows would not boot.
* Microsoft Security Essentials. Any application using large data files was unworkably slow. That included Thunderbird.
* AVG It was just clunky and I did not like it.
But the big issue these days is the products are not just anti virus, they are suites including firewalls, password managers/vaults and often spam and scam tools. It is usually these later tools that cause the most issues with the firewalls blocking anything but known versions of known software and spam tools that mess up because it has not had enough testing.
Basically your on your own in selecting a product5. I can not recommend one. But I seriously question the need for mail scanning. Especially after that remarkable admission by Symantec regarding Norton's not scanning mail.
Thunderbird does not run any scripts in mail, nor does it do anything with attachments before you open them and then it decodes them and places them in the temp folder where any good anti virus will scan them.
Personally I suggest anti virus rather than security suite software. Especially so if you use Chrome or Firefox browsers and they both use Google lists of known malware and phishing site to block inadvertent visits.
Windows has a firewall, your modem (over 90%) has one as well, those firewalls block ports, protocols and route traffic. Do you also need one that blocks programs?
Mozilla products have a password manager, do you need another? And so the list goes on.

User profile in WINDOWS 8.1, 8, 7 redirected to C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile

When you are logging into Windows 8.1,8 or 7 using your user credential you will finaly end up as system service account or at least your profile will be recognized this way. This mean that system is now looking in C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile
for DESKTOP, DOCUMENTS etc.
I faced this probem few times on diffrent PCs. This problem has been out there for some time and peapole are tring to copy their profile to C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile. Sound no good for me.
Another way is to create new profile but it takes a lot of time and the problem sometimes comes back

I manage to find out that the issue has something to do with the change of the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-X-X-XX-XXXXXXXXXXXX
S-X-X-XX-XXXXXXXXX is your user SID. The to REG_DWORD that are changed
FLAGS
REFCOUNT
After you change values to FLAGS 1 and REFCOUNT 0 you have to log out. Now log in and you profile should be back again.
I hope that this will save you some time and that microsoft will finaly fix whatever cause this issue.

How to repair corrupt \windows\system32\config\system files?

T61 will not boot to Win XP - says the \windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt.
BIOS hardware test of disk drive passes. When I place a Microsoft Win XP disk to attempt a repair, the message says there is no disk drive detected. I assume this is due to unique Lenovo HDD drivers that are not on the Microsoft disk.
Is there a way to repair this file(s) without doing a full HDD reformat?

You need to include the Intel Matrix Storage manager via Floppy disk while running setup-CD or change in BIOS "Config"-SATA" to compatibility.
Then you can repair windows but first backup the hard drive onto annother disk f.ex with Acronis True Image Home (Emergency CD).
Boot from XP Retail-CD
`select "Install"
select the drive with the found windows installation and "Repir"
Windows Setup removes the system files and replaces them from CD
after systemreboot you willneed to re-install all patches and updates

Simultaneous sync with two exchange servers - will it ever be possible?

I fully understand that this is not possible at present (one has only to try to get a very clear pop-up message). I also understand that nobody can predict (or is willing to say) what is coming in future releases. My question is whether or not simultaneous syncing with two exchange servers is even theoretically possible. I don't undertstand exchange/ActiveSync well enough to even know if it's in the realm of possibility.
If not, I'll try to find another way to do what I want (Gmail for calendar and contacts and work for mail, calendar and contacts) - I am open to suggestions. If it is, I'll have to figure out how important one (or the other) is to me for now and wait for the day when I can have my cake and eat it too.

I'm not sure if this is an ActiveSync limitation, but it might be since I don't believe accessing more than one Exchange account via ActiveSync with a Windows Mobile device is supported either, and ActiveSync and Windows Mobile are Microsoft products.

Need recommendation - iis with two physical servers and clusters

I was hoping to get a recommendation/opinion or two on the configuration I've inherited. I'm looking
at the following configuration using weblogic 8.1 sp4 server (to be upgraded to sp6) running on two physical machines:
MachineA:
Domain: myDomain
Cluster: cluster1
Servers: Admin Server:9001 (not part of cluster)
ManagedServer1:7001
ManagedServer2:7010
MachineB:
Domain: myDomain
Cluster: cluster2
Servers: Admin Server:9001 (not part of cluster)
ManagedServer3:7001
ManagedServer4:7010
On MachineA: IIS Proxy Plugin with parameter in .ini file
WeblogicCluster: MachineA:7001, MachineA:7010, MachineB:7001,MachineB7010
Naturally, the IIS is acting as a round robin load balancer..
The domains were created using the wizard on both machines and basic domain template..
For proper failover to be taken advantage of, does something different need to be configured? Or is it fine?
And if so, does group replication have something to do with it?
Should either of the clusters be Managed Servers across physical machines?
or should this just be one cluster of 4 managed servers across two machines?
I really am not sure on any of this, even though i've read through much of the documentation for clustering..twice.
I should mention that there is only a .war file deployed with 4 connection pools and 4 Data Sources..No EJBs or JMS

Servers: Admin Server:9001 (not part of cluster)
ManagedServer1:7010

Servers: Admin Server:9001 (not part of cluster)
ManagedServer3:8010
ManagedServer4:8020
I just changed the port numbers so they flow and have a pattern - 70* port numbers belong to cluster 1, 80* port numbers belong to cluster 2. No technical benefit apart from it makes it tidier in my opinion.
Port 9001 for the admin server is normally the domain wide admin port - you could be using that, so that's fine, but my admin server is running 7001.
You also only need one admin server per domain, this can run on MachineA
Replication groups are used to help WLS figure out where to place the secondary http session. It will try servers on a different machine/replication group first, if none available, it will create secondary on the same machine.
What you will end up with is a domain with 4 managed servers in it. The admin server will run on machineA, say using port 7001, each of the managed servers will contact the admin server to download it's config.
The cluster1 will contain 2 managed servers and the same for cluster2.
providing you have your cluster multicast addresses set up and the cluster is working, that should be all you need to do for the session failover.
There's some BEA sample code somewhere which will deploy a web-app and show which managed server you've attached to. If you find that and then connect through IIS, shut down the server that the JSP tells you, you should be able to see the session fail-over nicely.

It would be very helpful if you post the whole error and not just the filename. Also it would be very useful to know what OS version/edition (for example: Windows Vista Prof x64) and thinkpad model you got.
I have seen errors that appear right when Windows start to load with a black screen that says windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt or something like that. Is that what you experience? I have also only seen this problem with computers running Windows Vista, are you using Vista?
If this is the problem you see the solution is to boot from a Windows DVD and choose the repair option instead of starting the windows installation. That should fix the problem. Another option would be if you got a image backup of the computer. Without the DVD i don't know how to fix this problem or if it's even possible.

Actually, I am sucessful to logon Business View manager with CRuser1. However, I fail to logon CMC and infoview and got the above error. Have you any suggestion to solve this problem?

if you can logon with client tools then that should be an indication that the service account running the CMS IS working! Good news.
So the problem is likely with the java portion (krb5/bsclogin or java options)
If the files are in c:\winnt\ (if not copy them there) and perform c:\program files\business objects\javasdk\bin\kinit username
then enter and password/enter again
Probably get the same message. To note in your krb5.ini all domain info must be in CAPS (the .com appears to be in lower case)
kinit works with just the krb5.ini, java SDK and AD (removing BO config and the service account from the picture). Once that works if your java options are specified properly you should be able to login to CMC/infoview.
also 1 last point. Add udp_preference_limit = 1 to the krb5 lib defaults section

CF11 is crashing ( application pool suffered a fatal communication error with the Windows Process Activation Service)

I have a cluster of 2 IIS web servers on Windows Server 2008 R2. They had been running on CF10 for over a year (if not two) with no problems. I upgraded one server to CF11 and now that server is crashing while the CF10 servers is still running fine.
In the Windows event log I'm seeing 4 instances of this error:
"A process serving application pool '******' suffered a fatal communication error with the Windows Process Activation Service. The process id was '4652'. The data field contains the error number."
Then finally:
"Application pool '******' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool.".
Looking at the application pool in the IIS admin it is stopped. Restarting will resolve but it will eventually crash.
What could be the issue?

Anyone got NTP working with a Windows 2008 NTP server?

I'm trying to sync the time on our routers and swithces with a Windows 2008R2 server, but it doesn't work. Has anyone managed to do this:

I got this working from a cisco 2911 router to Windows 7 computer.
As per many articles, you are missing:-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config]"
"AnnounceFlags"=dword:00000005
But the one that allows Cisco kit to Sync is:-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config]"
"LocalClockDispersion"=dword:00000000
This article http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/network-time-protocol-ntp/108076-ntp-troubleshoot.html talks about having a root-dispersion higher than 1000ms (1 second) causing Cisco IOS-NTP to unsynchronizes itself.
This article http://htluo.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/ntp-network-time-protocol.html#comment-form was the only one I found that added to the normal enable ntp server registry keys information, stating to change ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\LocalClockDispersion’ from 10 to 0
There was also articles that said that the Windows NTP implementation was version 3, and therefore you had to append ‘version 3’ to the routers ‘ntp server x.x.x.x’ command. This may be perhaps true for earlier windows versions?, but was NOT required for Windows 7.
