3 year old played with my computer

Our friends visited today. We were looking for their 3 year old and when called she told us she was using the 'puter'. She had several windows open and my wife closed them all but now the entire screen and all windows are in purple sepia with what appears to be black/white reversal.
Any one have any ideas how I can reverse this or reset the colors of the screen? I tried colorsync utility (which was opened by the little girl) but I have no clue what to do.
Thanks for any advice,
Luc

  • My 4 year old was on the computer & now my settings/programs are gone!

My 4 year old was on my IMAC playing computer games. I left the room to do some things around the house & when I came back she had all my desk top items off of the desk top & all kinds of weird windows opened. What I was really concerned about was that NONE of my Iphoto pics & Itunes songs that were previously bought & downloaded were there anymore! In fact when I clicked on the Iphoto logo or Itunes logo to open them... I was directed to register & accept the user agreements again... just like the FIRST time I used them.
Does anyone have any idea if there is a way to retrieve the photos & songs on Itunes that were on there??? I have NO CLUE what she did. Actually my entire computer settings were set back to like my computer was new out of the box. My address book was empty, the bookmarks all gone, settings were changed. Luckily the isync was able to retrieve my Safari settings, bookmarks, & address book... but everything else is wiped out as far as I can tell. My husband is pretty upset about our complete Itunes library being completely wiped out!! Where the heck did everything go & what the heck did she click on to wipe everything out?? It's sad that my 4 year old is more computer savvy than I am!!
Anyway, I am just praying that some how there is a way to get this info back! I really want my pictures & my itunes back!!! If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks in advance, Lori
PS yes I already checked the trash bin on the computer & the only things in there were a few items that I had deleted throughout the day

Ah! the joy of always having a cloned backup on an external firewire drive! Without wanting to labor the point, external drives are now cheap enough to make them the very first thing you should purchase after your Mac! This is ESPECIALLY true if you are going to let your 4 year old play with the computer!
    Well what could have happened?
The likely possibilities are that your child has created another user account or, more likely, moved your "home" folder or other folders within it.
First thing to check, then , is inside Macintosh HD/Users to see if there is ANOTHER user account there.
If so, then that is probably where your stuff is.
If not, then you can probably be pretty sure that she has simply dragged your own stuff into different places, where things like iTunes and iPhoto wouldn't expect to find them. Spotlight is your friend. Think of one of those songs in iTunes and do a spotlight search for it. Chances are that you will find your missing stuff.
I'd be MUCH more worried if trash didn't contain some things that you had deleted earlier on. The only way your four year old could have deleted things without understanding Unix and using the Console or booting in single user mode would have been to have emptied the trash. If things you had put there earlier are still there, then your stuff will be "somewhere" on the drive. Again, think of any file which is missing, or even just a word within it, and try a spotlight search.
Don't be too surprised about the register and accept agreement messages. Maybe your obviously advanced child has used "Software Update" (from under the Apple menu). Alternatively, maybe you have the cmputer set to check for updates at regular intervals. If so, bear in mind that any newly "updated" software (and there have just been updates to iTunes etc) will ask you to accept the agreements the first time you use them .
One thing to think about is how much disk space has been used. If this too looks like it has gone back to very little, and was much higher before "playtime", then you have a major problem. If not, then your stuff is still there somewhere. Use spotlight to find it if a new user account hasn't been created.
If the worst comes to the worst, and dear child has really got rid of the stuff, then your last line of defence is "Data Rescue" - see http://www.prosoftengineering.com/products/data_rescue.php Yes, it will cost you $100US but it should be able to recover just about anything that has been deleted from your drive by any means available to your 4 year old, unless you have subsequently done major things to the drive.
    Cheers

  • Will Mountain Lion work on my 4 year old iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo   Processor Speed:     2.66 GHz

Will Mountain Lion work on my 4 year old iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 2.66 gHz.
Really do not want to load it and find there are issues.
Oh I really not a big tech guy I just want everything to work well.
And I'm just about to purchase a Mac Book Pro as well.
Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated
    Cheers

I also have a 4 year old iMac 24". it is the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo. I have been running Mountain Lion since it was released, and before that Lion. Runs great. Over the last month I have noticed some slow data transfers from a USB harddrive. But not enough to do any research. I use a USB harddrive for my Time Machine backup and notice no problems or slow transfers while the Time Machine backup runs. My iTunes has its nedia files on a USB harddrive and is used to watch videos, play music and share photos on the AppleTV. I also use Aperture on the iMac to store and manage 20,000 photos.
I have 6 GB of ram, 4GB and 2GB memory sticks. I know it is best to have identical ram sticks but my iMac model cannot run 8GB of ram and I feel 6GB is better than 4GB.
Mountain Lion is a great OS and I am glad I upgraded. It works great with the AppleTV (no airplay but iTunes on the iMac serves up all our music, photos and videos), iPhone, and iPod Touch. Also with my wifes brand new Macbook Pro. All the devices including the iMac can share data on iCloud.

  • I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8

    I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 & PowerPC G5 processor
Problem is iTunes, reinstalled recently as 10.6.3; saying needs QuickTime 7.5.5 or higher.

the iTunes 10.6.3 was installed a few days ago by the same tech person selling me the computer about two years ago, when the OS was reinstalled including iTunes.  I've not been able to make iTunes work since the computer was returned.
The tech person is busy and will get back to me eventually, so I'm trying to see if I can do anything by myself.  This shouldn't of happened, though everyone makes mistakes; is what I'm guessing?

  • YEARS-old issue with slow play, 100% cpu usage, and conspiracy theories

I've had the same issue for YEARS now, with flash videos (like on youtube) and games starting out okay, but after a little while, they just start to stutter and slow way down, while the CPU usage goes up to ridiculous levels. The browser doesn't matter, firefox or chrome, online content or run off the local hard drive. I have the latest flash player, and this has been a problem ever since at least version 9. I'm using XP. I think version 8 never had this issue, but unfortunately all recent games and youtube videos won't run with version 8. Adobe did something with recent versions of flash player that causes this issue now. Google search and you'll see countless threads from people with all kinds of computers with all kinds of specs having the exact same issue.
There has never been an entry in the Adobe knowledgebase about it, despite the persistence of this problem.
It's like it's a coverup or something. The more I think about it, the more it reminds me about when the Netscape browser was caught secretly uploading information to their servers and resulting in browser slowdowns. Is flash player doing the same thing? Adobe has already been caught out with spyware-like activities with Photoshop connecting to Omniture through the flash-enabled splash screens that were purposely disguised to look like they were innocently connecting to a user's local system, but in fact connecting to stat and online marketing sites. Is this why this years-old problem has never been addressed in any official way? Now I'm just rambling. I want a fix. It's been years now that I haven't been able to enjoy more than a few minutes worth of flash content.
At this point, even if Adobe shrugged their shoulders and said "yeah, we know about the problem but we have no idea how to fix it" would be better than nothing at all.

    Hi, lotus_mama
Wow, that's a potent 4-year old. So there's obviously not a very easy way to clean up this mess, but if we're lucky we can get stuff back together.
It seems that she pulled out everything in your Users folder. When you open your hard drive icon, you should see: Applications, System, Library, Users. It's not easy to move stuff out of this level, you have to type in a password to allow it.
If you go into Users, it contains your main user (house icon) and another called "Shared". If you are the only user on your machine, all your personalization happens inside Users, in your main user directory.
Assume your main user is "lotus_mama". Inside of the house-icon folder with that name, you should have these special folders: Library, Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, Sites. First, make sure all these folders are in place. If you see them lying around outside, say on your desktop, try to put them back.
Your iTunes library normally lives in your Music folder. If the Music folder was not moved, and you launched iTunes and it made you register and all, it probably created a new iTunes music folder inside "Music". If you find a folder elsewhere called "iTunes" (Get Info on it, it should be large depending on the music you have stored) then iTunes was expecting that one to be in your "Music" folder.
Your iPhoto Library lives in your Pictures folder. If you find it elsewhere, place it in your Pictures folder.
It's hard to tell what happened by simply guessing as I am now. My best guess is that your 4-yr-old moved all these folders (Pictures, Music, Movies, Documents, Library, Sites, Public) out of your user folder. That would cause the problems you're seeing.
First, locate these folders I mentioned above. Describe what you're seeing, where. It'll be easier for me (or someone here) to tell you where to put those things so that everything will work again.
One thing to note, your Mac OS and other applications (iPhoto, iTunes) may create new libraries or folders when the other ones are missing, so you may have some duplicates. Be careful of replacing a full folder with an empty one when you move stuff around (you'll get a warning)
If you create a folder on the desktop, you can place some stuff here - like the empty iPhoto Library that was created - instead of in the trash for the time being. This way you won't accientally remove anything permanently.
The best thing you can do to prevent this from happening again, is to create a user account (system preferences) for your child and let her play in her own environment. I do that for my kid and it's a real novelty to log in (with a simple password). I actually manage my "kid user" account very closely to prevent accidental exposure to websites and applications that kids shouldn't be visiting or using.
Anyway, good luck piecing this together. If you didn't find anything in the trash, that's a good thing (unless she also knows how to empty trash, probably not. Post back with more descriptive information and we can take it from there.

Ok, in spotlight, search for 'itunes music' without the quotes. It should show a folder called iTunes music part way down the list.
Hover your mouse over the folder and it will tell you where the folder is. It SHOULD be in your users/yourusername/music/itunes

  • Help! My four year old messed up my computer.

I put my four year old in front of photobooth today while I was getting a quick shower. When I came back 5 minutes later, my whole computer was messed up. It is like he reset everything, in fact, it is almost identical to the day that I bought it. No email, no homepage, no favs, none of my icons in dock, no desktop picture. What on earth could he have done and is there anyway I can put it back like it was? I am so frustrated and don't know what to do.
    Thanks in avdance.

Ok, I don't see another house icon with my short name on it. What I do find that is standing out to me is this...
In my user name (house icon) folder, are more folders, right?
There are two that read "Library". One of these has some funny character in it like he was typing to change the name. One of them has all of my things in it, the other does not. The was I can confirm this is in the mail folder of this library folder. The one that he appears to have changed the name...when I open the mail folder there is my email account, my saved mail, and such.
In the other one (the one that looks untouched, there are far fewer icons, and it just don't look personalized if you know what I mean (when I look around in the folders).
What could this mean? I really have a hunch this has something to do with it.

  • Flash Player won't start on a 4 year old iMac with Maverick

    L.S.
I switched to Maverick on my 4 year old iMac. At first the program Maverick slowed down te activity speed. After changing datafiles to an external drive it works oké now. No problems untill now.
Recent I needed Adobe Flash Player, which is downloaded in the most recent version on my iMac, for starting a program for showing results. The program doesn't start, I had to download the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player.
No result - Testing - downloading - removing cookies - restarting - downloading and installing again, etc.
Testing the Flash Player on YouTube the problem results in the same problem.
The software on my iMac is up to date.
Has anybody the solution to solve this ?
    Thank you,
    FamB

Flash Player has to be downloaded, installed and allowed .
    1. System Preferences >  Flash Player > Advanced >  Delete  All
         Press the "Delete All" button
         Install Adobe Flash Player.
        http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
        Follow the prompts.   Quit Safari.
        Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.
    2.  Allow  Plug-ins
        Safari > Preferences > Security
        Internet Plug-ins >  "Allow  plug-ins"
        Enable it.
Press " Manage Website Settings" button for more options.

  • 1 year old iMac with issue

This is my first Apple computer, and up until now - over a year, never had issue.  For past week, having trouble with closing programs on the red close button, or deleting emails on those buttons, or typing into a web browser, or entering on a submit button... When I place the mouse on these areas immediately a pop up occurs from the "tool bar options" for example - "cutomizie toolbar" will show, or a box that states "icon & text, icon only, text only".  It is not always the same pop up but several differnt ones.  I can't seem to figure out why.  It allows you to not be able to close out at that or enter information? The buttons become useless.   It occurs probably 75 percent of the time.  I am not inadvertently hitting something different with the mouse.  It seems like some sort of bug?  Is there a program I can run to diagnose or find it, or do I need to take it to a repair shop?

The gray area above the window is called the toolbar and if you right click on it you'll get the option to Customize. So one of two things are happening: 1) your finger is straying over to the right side of the mouse (easy to do with the magic mouse) or 2) you have a mouse problem.

  • 3 year old MacBook with extremely swollen/bloated battery

As the title states, my 2007 MacBook has an extremely swollen/bloated battery. It's so big now that the trackpad no longer "clicks" when pressed and the cover on the battery no longer stays flush with the bottom. I took my computer to the Apple Store a couple of months ago but the Genius that helped me merely told me to buy a new battery. Now, it's larger than it was before and I'm getting suspicious that I have a defective battery. As far as performance and stats of the battery, I can still squeeze out 2-3 hours from it. It has 590 charge cycles and the condition is still Normal. Should I bother taking it in to the Apple Store again (It's quite a drive for me) or should I just pay up and buy a new battery?

    Hey Brian.
It happened to me and at apple they told me it was because of the age of the battery, over 4 years now, although only 270 cycles. It's just a question of built up gases in the battery pouches, no joking! I did my research and I have found a video tutorial that explains out to fix it.  Check out the video tutorial:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoOIb6pZ6vo
It has worked for me for over 1 month now with no issues what so ever!
Apple has just patented a new pouch with a valve to let the gases out.  They hope this will prevent any further bloating of batteries and therefore any further free replacement.
Let us know if it works for you!

  • How to use old library with new computer?

    Hello,
I keep all my music on an external HD. Recently, my main computer died, so I had to start using another iMac. It's running Tiger and iTunes 6, but I have never used the iTunes before. How do I get this computer to "see" my old iTunes library (on the external)?

You are welcome. One thing that comes to mind is that I believe when you use an external drive to hold your library, it is important that the external is on and mounted when ever you start up iTunes. My understanding is if you start iTunes and the external drive is not available, then iTunes reverts back to the default location on your internal. You then have to reset it back to the external, but I think you also have to re-add everything all over again.
So be sure you always have the external up and ready whenever you open iTunes.
