30" cinema display remains blank on reboot

This subject is still alive, even if the discussions are archived.
I have had the problem of the black screen on restart many times, with a G5 and with a Mac Pro. It was always solved by resetting the PMS and then the PRAM. However, yesterday we had a power outage (very common here) and on reboot there was nothing happening on the display. I did the reset but it was still blank. Turned the MacPro on with the USB and Firewire plugs from the ACD disconnected and the display worked fine. Plug the USB cable back in, the screen goes off etc etc. Tried the reset again, leaving it decoupled for a full minute. Still no joy.
Before I go and buy a USB hub and a longer firewire cable, I wondered if there had been any developments on this front since we last met to complain about the very poor support we are getting for this very very expensive display?
Drew

I had the same problem a minute ago. The power light sometimes comes on, but the screen is just blank (either lit blank or off, depending on the power state. I read elsewhere in an archived thread that removing all the cables and powering back up worked. I had a mouse plugged into my kyb and the kyb plugged into the back of the display. Into gfx card I had the main video cable + USB feed-through for the mouse & kyb. I unplugged everything and left it a few secs. I then just plugged in the video cable and booted up. SUCCESS! - I then re-connected the mouse to the kyb & the kyb to the back of the display and its all working fine so far.
Note: This was just after a Lion security update came down but I hadn't rebooted yet. I'm now running 10.8.4

  • Apple Cinema Display 23" - Blank Screen, "short-long-short" LED code

    Hello everyone.
This sounds like something of an epidemic... My Apple Cinema 23" HD Display (bought Dec. 2007) hasn't been turning on after a power outage hit our area last week.
The Computer and Display were OFF when the outage occurred. Everything was plugged into a surge suppressor. Everything ELSE plugged in to the suppressor is fine (including my Mac CPU)... but not the monitor.
It’s not dead-dead…. It’s a blank screen but there IS a morse-code flash on the LED (short-long-short). According to Apple Support’s LED Translation, it SHOULD be something to do with the power adaptor. The adaptor IS correct… a 90 watt… but just in case I bought ANOTHER 90w adaptor brick. I plugged the monitor to the new brick. THE RESULT WAS THE SAME.
I’ve tried power cycling, I’ve tried plugging it into different outlets, I’ve tried connecting to other computers. The same LED result remains.
And, yes, of course, I’ve got no Apple Support, and from what I read in similar posts, outside-the-warranty repairs could hit around $400. I REFUSE!
For now I have a Samsung monitor from Costco. It’s not bad, but it’s not the Apple monitor with its awesome color-fidelity.
I've read some other posts with the same problem (LED blink code and all) elsewhere but haven't got a solid answer.
I wonder… has anyone else incurring this same problem (with the same LED flashing deal) tried to use a 150-WATT adaptor brick? I would try this myself, but I’m currently financially unable (and personally unwilling) to throw more cash at this problem unless I know it’ll fix it.

    Hi all!
As mentioned on the title of this topic *I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM* with my 23" Cinema Display...
Before the failure, the monitor *WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION* (trust me when I comment this, my whole life is in front of a monitor)
*THE PROBLEM SHOWED UP THE DAY I MOVED THE MONITOR TO AN OTHER OFFICE* (???). Please note that *I TOOK EXTRA CARE WHEN I MOVED THE MONITOR*, besides, when something costs around 1K you owe to.
*I TRIED AN 150W ADAPTER ON IT AND WORKED FINE!!!* Just like before.
But since *IT WAS UNDER GUARANTY* I sent it to the local distributor who eventually *REPLACED IT WITH A "NEW" ONE*, which after remarks from my side it turned out it wasn't "new" but re-manufactured by Apple (off course, he guarantied me the parts in it, where brand new and had 0 hours of usage).
In my question to the technical representative of Apple *"WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY MONITOR"*, he answered me that *THE INVERTER WAS FAULT*.
After that I questioned him *"WHY MY MONITOR MANAGED TO WORK WITH THE 150W ADAPTER?"*, he answered me that *THE EXTRA CHARGE OF THE 150W ADAPTER WAS ABLE TO "EXCITE" SUCCESSFULLY THE FAULTY INVERTER IN ORDER TO WORK* and that *IT WAS A MATTER OF MONTHS FOR THE MONITOR TO FAIL AGAIN*.
That's my story... I hope it may help some of you... Personally I can't have an opinion on the matter, since I'm not a technician. The only thing on which I can comment is that *A 1K MONITOR SHOULD BE WAY MORE DURABLE AND TOLERANT WHEN YOU TRANSFER IT AROUND (if that cause the problem of course)*

  • HT2811 Cinema Displays 27", blank screen and doesn't come on.

I have two Cinema Displays 27" on a Mac Pro, one display powers up and works fine, the other stays blank with the light blinking three times. Short, Long, Short, meaning my power adaptor is wrong, but switching adaptors doesn't work.
I have read the Apple article about the monitor things it's using the wrong adaptor. But mine I've been using is the correct one for the size and it even works when I switch adaptors and leads with my working display.
Not sure how to fix this. I've tried unplugging everything, and plugging one thing in at a time and restarting to try and isolate any problems.
    Any suggestions?

  • Installed 2nd graphics card in HP Pavillion Windows 8.1, but displays remain blank (no signal).

    Model #: 500-314
    Product #: F3E92AA#ABA
I just upgraded to a new HP, and need to run 4 displays.  I purchased a 2nd video card (Radeon R7 240), installed it, overcame the secure boot issue, but the additional 2 displays are blank.
When I check for the graphic cards, it only shows the AMD Radeon R7 Graphics card.
Also, the R7 240 CD with the drivers, does not open. when I click on it.   It just shows the little blue circle like its working on opening the program, but it does not open the program.   So I went to the Radeon website and downloaded the drivers for the R7 240.  It installed Catalyst, but still nothing.
What can I do to make this work?
    Thank you

    Hi:
When you install an add on graphics card, the onboard video is automatically disabled and cannot be enabled.
That info has been left off of the product specs page.
You can check to see if there is a BIOS setting to enable the onboard video but I doubt there is one.
I can't help you with why you are having issues with the add on card.
All I can say is that if you did not first uninstall the graphics drivers from the onboard graphics before you installed the new card, that is probably the problem.

  • 30" LCD Cinema display - sporadically blanks out, need to restart Mac Pro

2007 vintage 30" LCD Cinema HD display running off a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT. Was Mac OS 10.5.latest, just upgraded to 10.6.4 with no effect on the problem.
This has happened perhaps 8 or 10 times over the last few months, and IIRC always when I'm playing WoW. I know WoW heats up my Pro more than anything else because I can hear the cooling fans speeding up when I load and play it.
The symptom is the screen goes totally black. The little white light down the bottom-right of the display comes on. If I push the power button on the display the white light goes bright, but there's no other reaction. The capslock light on the keyboard still reacts so I know I don't have a total system hang.
I shut down the whole Mac Pro by holding in its On button for 10 seconds, and it powers down as normal. But the white light on the display is still on, and I have to disconnect the power from the display so the white light goes off; only then I turn the Pro back on and all is well again.
The screen always gets very warm to the touch - I can hold my hand on it OK so it's not burning hot but it still seems too hot to me. Is this normal for this screen? It seems a little odd there are no cooling vents if so. Having just restarted iStat Pro says Mac HD (I think that's the display) is 46c, CPUs and everything else 40c or below. It is coming on for summer here but today is not hot, iStat says ambient is 23c.
So what am I asking for? I guess some sort of validation of my issue, advice, and where I should start diagnosis - display, video, display power, the Mac itself ... or should I just get Apple out here? I do have Apple Care.
    Thanks all.

And it's happened twice since then, both while playing WoW. After the latest reboot my temps are 49c for display, 45c and 48c for CPUs. The Mac has been on for over 6 hours before I ran up Wow with no problem, in Wow for maybe 5 minutes and there it goes.
The latest Mac updates to iTunes 10.1 and OS 10.6.5 were applied a few hours ago, well before this latest crash.
My best guess is that either some component has gone temperature-intolerant that didn't used to be, or there is something in the latest WoW version that is triggering some hardware, driver or OS problem. I really don't have much of an idea where to go now. Any suggestions?

  • 5800 display remains blank despite using the lock/...

With firmware v20.0.012 on a German, blue 5800 RM-356 I have this problem which was not in the v11 FW.  I did a successful, legal update with NSU v1.4.98 and restored my settings with PC Suite 7.1.18.  The theme is a standard Nokia one.  The fault is as follows:
The display is turned off (standby mode) and then I press the middle, (white LED) menu key. A message appears faintly saying approximately (in German) "Use the lock/unlock slider to free the screen".  I can use the screen for some seconds but it fades again and goes blank (black).  What drove me freaking crazy was that using the lock/unlock slider now lights up the green/white/red LED keys but the display itself stays blank. The touchscreen vibrates when I hit it and I think the taps do function but I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING.  Using the slider again will fade the LEDs and everything is off.  Retry with the slider and the LEDs come on but no display!  The phone refuses to get out of this mode despite using lock/unlock slider many times and waiting 10 minutes etc.  I have to turn the 5800 off completely and restart to get back to normal.
A hard reset *#7780#  (or the corresponding menu option) did not improve this really.
Solution to what seems to be a bug in FW 20.0.012:
Display is off.  Press the middle (white LED) menu key and while the display is still faintly shown, activate the lock/unlock slider BEFORE THE DISPLAY FADES AGAIN.  This brings up to the display as normal.  Phew, what a relief!
This took days to work out the problem. If you accidently touched the middle, white-LED menu key once, when the 5800 was blanked (in your pocket?) then the lock/unlock slider only brings on the 3 coloured LEDS and no permanent display.
Does anyone else suffer from this?  I though it may be happening when the battery was low but now it seems to be easy to replicate.
    Nokia.. please fix this!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hurrah, problem seems to be solved in firmware 21.0.025 from April 09.  If you now accidently press the red, green or white function key when the screen was blanked, the advice message still comes but it does NOT prevent unlocking with the slider shortly afterwards.  Wait for the white LED to fade and then you can restore the screen TO FULL BRIGHTNESS with the slider.

  • Connecting latest 13" macbook pro to 20" Cinema Display

Am trying to connect a macbook pro 13" laptop (latest edition) to a 20" cinema display (from around 2007/2008 - not the very newest model). The display is connected to the computer using a DVI to mini display port adapter and USB cable. The computer will not recognise the display automatically and when I go to the display section in system preferences and click on "detect displays" nothing happens. Have tried rebooting and every possible combination and sequence of plugging in and connecting the two pieces of equipment, but nothing. The computer will not recognise the display and the display remains blank (although the power light pulses white when the USB lead is plugged in). Any suggestions?

Is the Mini DisplayPort plug pushed in all the way?

  • Is my 23" Cinema Display dying?

My 23" Apple Cinema Display has been working flawlessly since Nov. 2006 but is now displaying some odd behavior. It's connected to a Mac Pro 2,1 (2x3.0GHz 8 core, ATI X1900XT) running currently updated Snow Leopard (10.6.3). When I tried to wake it from sleep this morning, the system powered up, but the display remained blank and the LED on the front panel of the display went from pulsing to dark. I connected to the system via remote desktop and verified that the display was still detected which it was. I tried a SMC reset, PRAM reset, and several reboots, yet the display stayed dark. I even tried plugging it into my 15" MacBook Pro with no joy. Basically giving up, I powered the entire system down and left it so for a couple of hours. Knowing that I could still RDP into the system, I powered it back up and low and behold the display came back on. The front panel LED is still dark though which causes me to think the device may soon give up the ghost all together.
Is it worth trying just a new power brick? Any other suggestions?
Any help in troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

I'm having the same wake from sleep issues. Recently, my Cinema Display, hooked to a MacPro Tower, has been having trouble waking from sleep (has some problems going to sleep as well). Clicking the mouse several times (a bluetooth Mighty Mouse) will sometimes get the display to come back on. But this morning, nothing would work. Restarted several times...nothing.
Then, I tried clicking the mouse a few times, and the display turned on. Very frustrating.

  • Connecting DVI Cinema Display and VGA Projector from Minidisplay Port

    Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to get my mid 2011 Mac Mini to send a signal from my MiniDisplay Port to a vga splitter which works fine. My biggest thing is that when I connect my inFocus IN112 VGA Projector the screen shows up from my mac but to connect my Cinema Display it takes VGA so I had to go from the VGA Splitter on one side and use a vga to dvi adapter and my cinema display shows blank? Help Me Please!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I already have a converter on the end of the VGA Splitter to go to the Cinema. The reason I don't use the hdmi to dvi is because with the minidisplay port using vga to the projector and the hdmi going to dvi to the Cinema it makes the projector screen very rough and pixely

  • 20inch cinema display not working via ADC?

Heres the specs on my Mac
    Dual 450mhz Gigabit Ethernet Model
    OS X 10.3.9
    1.38GB SDRAM
ATI 128 video card -----> now nvidia GeForce 4 MX
    The Story:
I have had my G4 since it was new. I bought it with the 17" Studio Display and it has worked fine. and still works fine with both video cards mentioned above. I bought a used 20" Cinema Display. I saw the display working off an ADC connection before I even paid the guy. I brought the monitor home and tried it out. It loaded to the grey apple screen and then went blank. After some research I found out the ATI 128 only supports up to 17" display. So I got a nVidia GeForce4 MX, put it in my machine, fired it up and I get NO DISPLAY AT ALL! I plugged the 17" back in and it works just fine.
Also the guy I purchased it with threw in the apple DVI to ADC adapter, so I plugged the monitor into my Powerbook 1.33mhz and everything works just fine in mirror and dual display modes.
I am stumped. Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Jus

    Hey guys,
I don't know if this will help, but here goes. I bought my 20" Cinema Display with the first G5s to come out ~ 9/2003. Lightning came in on my G5 thru the ethernet port and it wouldn't boot up. Frustrated, I unhooked everything and let the setup sit.
About a month ago I bought a G4 off ebay. It had a video card that had a DVI and VGA port--I guess it was an aftermarket upgrade. I was itching to try my 20" Cinema Display on it. So I bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter ($99 thing). Hooked it up and sweet, screen real estate for days!
Came home a couple of days later, woke the G4 from sleep, and the Cinema Display stayed blank....f*!
I was p**d! I spent nearly $1200 for the thing, plus $99 for the adapter. I tried unplugging and plugging the adapter/display/G4 per the adapter instructions, still blank screen.
Well, today I had 3 different 22" LCDs in my newegg.com shopping cart and was ready to fork out $200-$300 for a new LCD with a DVI connection. I was convinced it was the adapter. So I thought I would try to hook the setup up 1 more time before I pulled out my debit card. I looked at the instructions again, and noticed apple pictured plugging the power cord into the adapter box first, then plugging the power cord coming from the adapter into the power source, then plugging the display into the adapter box, then plug the DVI cord from the adapter into the G4s video card (DVI-I port), then finally plug the USB cord from the adapter into the G4.
I powered up, and low and behold, I worked!!!
I'm typing this post on my 20" Cinema Display right now.
Only two things I can figure is setting the G4 and display to sleep is no good. The display and/or adapter seems not to work well with the sleep function. So I set System Preferences to never sleep for the display and the G4. Second, could there be a sensor where the power cord plugs into the adapter box? That's the only step I did different this time.
Sorry so long winded but if I can help out i want to 'cause I know how frustrated and sick I was about a having a kickin' $1200 display on the blink.
It could be just a coincidence, I'll repost if the Display goes blank again.
    peace,
    Danny

  • Using an Apple 23" HD Cinema Display with a Windows PC

    Hi there!
First off, apologies for what is very likely to be a duplicate thread. I have been trying to find some answers to my questions and have not succeeded thus far.
I have a 23" HD ACD that works fine with my mac mini, however I have just purchased a PC box, which I intend to use the display with also. The PC has a PNY Technologies Vecta nVidia 6800 GT (256Mb) in it, with single-link DVI out.
Upon setting up the machine to install Windows, the display remains blank. Reading up on the interweb seems to indicate that the display in incapable of showing the boot information on startup. I have used a vga display to install the OS, but I haven't had a chance to test the Apple display yet to see if it makes it into Windows and shows anything.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem, and is there a satisfactory solution?
    Many thanks for reading,
    warmest regards,
    Kevan

Thanks Karl, I had already found that link. Unfortunately, and unlike all of the posters on that forum, my display doesn't appear to show anything at all, even after booting into Windows XP. There is a possibility that this all needs to be set up before attaching the ACD, but I do not have another display I can use to install the latest drivers. My video card seems to meet all of the requirements necessary for running the display, but all I get is that interesting black-on-black colour scheme.
The display really is a stunning piece of engineering, but I have to say that I am very disappointed with my purchase. I may have to sell the display so that I may have a useable display device that works across both platforms.
    Hmpf. Dell, here I come...

  • Apple 23" Cinema Display Alive But Blank

I seem to be experiencing a very odd problem with the cinema HD display attached to my PowerMac G5. The machine itself boots up fine. I can ssh into it remotely and use it. But the display remains black, and no amount of hitting the power button on the side gives any response.
The monitor is powered up and being detected by the graphics card. X under GNU/Linux can read it:

So everything appears to be working as normal -- except I can't see anything. If I plug the display into my PowerBook, it's detected by Mac OS X too and I configure resolutions, mirroring, etc. But the display is black.
This started happening when I tried to move the monitor from being plugged into the mains directly to being plugged into the surge-only socket on my UPS. Before that, it was working fine. It has run fine off the UPS before, but now it seems to have got confused into not waking up (that's the best way I can describe it, it seems to be sleeping).
I've tried most things I can think of, including booting MacOS from the CD and resetting the PRAM, and am now at a loss. It doesn't seem to be a power issue because the monitor is responding to probes from the graphics cards in the PowerBook and PowerMac.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT FWIW, purchased as part of the PowerMac and HD display back in summer 2006.

Have a similar problem, display won't work with the G5. Can get it going on my MacBook Pro, if and only if, I unplug the the power from the brick, then restart MacBook and only plug in the power when the MacBook is up and running. It then works fine, but if it goes to sleep or you press the on/off button if goes blank again. Yet to get it working on the G5. Any ideas?

  • Retains 30" Cinema Display Callibration Settings through a system reboot.

I'm rebooting my entire system and having a spring clean. My 30" Cinema Display was callibrated with a Monaco Spider at the photo lab I use (gratis - they'll charge next time!) and I just want to retain my settings so I don't have to recallibrate afterwards. In the idiot proof language of a 3 year old, can anyone tell me which files I need to preserve? Thanks, Harry

If you go into Displays preferences and click on the Color tab and then click on the Open Profile button, the ColorSync Utility should launch and open a window. At the top of the window will be the name of the currently active ColorSync profile with a hex string identifier and a .icc file suffix, like xxxxxxx.icc where the xxxxxx's are a string of letters and numbers. If you seach in the Finder for that exact hex string you should find the file, likely in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays, or at least that's where it lives on my system. If you copy that file for safe keeping, you should be good.

    Hi,
Create a play list that you wish to burn. Select playlist, the file from main menu which gives to an option to burn the playlist. A pop up box appears allowing you to select burn speed and disc format.
