30" display doesn't always power up

I have a Mac Pro with a 30" Cinema Display. I have had trouble with the display powering up when I turn on my computer. I have hooked up another monitor and it works perfectly. The problem is with the Apple Cinema Display. I've taken the whole thing to the Apple Store and when they hooked it all up everything worked fine. I'm tired of having to turn everything off and reconnect the display to the computer until the Cinema comes on. I carefully follow the procedure in the display installation guide.
Once I get the display to come on, I don't turn off the computer. If I restart the computer the display works fine. It is only when the computer gets shut off that the display stops working.
Any suggestions as to what may be the source of this problem?

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I made the mistake of shutting down and now the usb and firewire ports at the back "don't work". If I connect the cables the monitor turns off. Now I have to connect my keyboard and mouse directly to the back of my mac as a work around. It is very frustrating and I would love a solution. I have a feeling it may be related to the power supply, but I can't afford to disconnect my mac long enough to sort this out at a service centre.

  • HP Pavilion doesn't always power on

HP Pavilion dv6-7010us; 12GB RAM, running Win 7 home. I don't  usually power off my laptop, I ususally close the lid and have it hibernate. I have had issues when I do power it off and then try and turn it on. When I  press the power button to turn it on, for a few fleeting seconds it sounds like it is trying to start (there is some noise and lights), then it stops.  Initially there is light on the power button, then the light and sounds go away.   This happens 4-5 times, then eventually it will power on and everything is fine. My concern is that this is a sign of some critical hardware component showing signs of eminent failure.  This has been happening for a number of months, but again I don't power it off very often. I keep my laptop plugged into power 95% of the time.  When I have the "power on" problems it is conneced to the power adapter.   I have checked all the connections to the power and they are fine.  I ran the HP battery check and my battery checked out fine. Any ideas?

    Hello
It would be helpful to have a look at your kernel messages : type dmesg in a console before and after plugging/unplugging your power cord and see if something new appears. Also look at "dmesg | grep power" and "dmesg | grep acpi" for error messages.
It probably is a kernel issue, not a misconfiguration, you might have to open a bug in the archlinux / kernel bugtrackers.

  • EMac CRT "display sleep" doesn't really power down

    Greetings:
I understand that the eMac's CRT "display sleep" mode doesn't really power down but just darkens the display, as shown by the instant start up when you break sleep -- which truly powered down CRTs can't do (need several seconds to).
Is there a third party program which can truly power-down the CRT for "display sleep" while other processes are at work? I'm watching my 'lectric bills and this would really help.

eMacs and old CRT iMacs are completely different beasts when it comes to the CRT connector inside.
The old iMac, at least this is true with my old Grape 333MHz model, used a standard 15-pin D-Sub type monitor cable inside so the "modification" would have been nothing more than unplugging the internal monitor and then plugging in the cable from the LCD monitor.
With the eMac, it isn't a standard monitor cable so you would have to figure out which wires are which and then make an adpater hardness to give you a standard output connector.

  • IMac display doesn't turn back on after sleep

This is a new problem on my two-year old iMac, and didn't happen before. What is happening with my iMac is that when it goes to sleep and the display turns off, the display doesn't turn back on when I move the mouse, press the keys or the power button.
It happens only after around 12 hours or so of inactivity, it seems. I have to reboot the iMac to force the display to turn back on. I think it is display issue, not the computer lockup because I checked which logs were written in /var/log - system.log was being written until I rebooted the iMac. However, I didn't see any information in there around the same time that I tried to turn the iMac back on.
Any ideas on how to debug the issue.

    Hi dailyjoe
    1. Reset your SMC exactly as instructed in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    2. It would be normal for you to have to startup your iMac if it lost power while in sleep mode, look at the box "Start up automatically after a power failure" in the Energy Saver preference.
I have always left the box for "Start up automatically after a power failure" unchecked and do occasionally find the iMac is shutdown because the power has gone off. I would suggest leaving the box unchecked, it's better than having the iMac going off & restarting multiple times if you are having bad weather or power issues.

  • My mac book air doesn't always charge

my mac book air doesn't always charge. The charger doesn't always light up. Please advise.

unlikely your charger is bad, rather it sounds as if your IO BOARD may be defective, perform a SMC reset and re-verify same.
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
If same contact Apple for full in shop diagnostic and possible parts replacement.

  • Quicktime window within an iframe in IE7 doesn't always go away

I have a quicktime player running in a webpage which is inside an iframe. When a new page is targeted on that iframe, the quicktime player remains there even though the new page loads and displays in the background. This doesn't always happen but say 90% of the time and only on IE (not FF or safari). The qt controls are still functional. It goes away when that new page (or some other page) is re-targeted to the iframe.
The player is called from a javascript function and uses embed tag (not object).
    Please help!

To update, my connection is SBC (not Comcast) and the error message that sometimes pops up is "No PPPoE server has been found for the specified service. Please delete the service name option and try again." I followed those instructions and deleted the service name option, but the error message still pops up when I the internet doesn't connect.
    Any help please! Thanks.

  • Stand-by button on Cinema HD display doesn't work after Mountain Lion upgrade

    Hi,
After I upgraded my Mac mini (spring '09) to Mountain Lion it appears that the buttons on the side of my Cinema HD display doesn't work. There is a setting in sys preferences that should put the Mac in stand-by when the power button is pressed. This doesn't work after I upgraded to OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Does anyone have similar experience. Anyway to fix it?
    Thanks,

  • Dropped 12" powerbook - HD fine, powers up but display doesn't come on

I'm trying to fix a dropped 12" powerbook. The battery corner took the impact. I've taken it apart and removed the HD which was fine and backed that up. When I turn on the powerbook it seems to power up fine, but the display doesn't turn on. Though it's possible that there's power but something earlier in the boot sequence is broken and is stopping it booting. Any suggestions as to things to try?
Also, there's a DVD in the slot drive, and ideas on how to get that out?

  • PB doesn't always start up/won't run on charged battery

I have a 15" aluminum PowerBook that I've slowly been bringing back to life after it had a full mug of coffee dumped into it. I cleaned everything out and it's working again, for the most part. However, there are a couple of unresolved problems. The biggest is the computer doesn't always start up. I've also noticed that it won't run on the battery alone, even though the battery is fully charged. When unplugging the computer, the screen goes dark but the computer is still making noise -- it's running to some extent. Any pointers on how to get things running again properly would be greatly appreciated.

If you're able to charge the battery while it's in the computer, and pushing the button on the back of the battery shows all the LEDs lighting up, that suggests that you have a logic board problem. There are only 4 components to the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. If what you described is that you can hook the power adapter up and charge the battery completely in the computer, the only component left is the logic board.
While there aren't any tests I've found to test the charging circuit, have you run the Apple hardware test or either of the TechTool programs to test the system? Insert your original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that give you any errors?

  • Thinkpad L512 display doesn't reach full brightness

My 2 month old Thinkpad L512 display doesn't reach full brightness, except for a few seconds after bootup. Then it dims down to maybe 8 or so on a scale of 1-10. Which is often good indoors, but in a bright situation, I could use the extra screen brightness.
The screen correctly dims significantly (to maybe 2 or so on a scale of 1-10) after siting idle for a few minutes, as specified in the Power settings. But when it recovers, it is at full brightness for 10 seconds or so, then dims back down to 8 and stays there until I repeat the cycle.
I have poked around in the Display and Power settings, and the display is set to 100% there.
    Any ideas? Thanks!
    David

I had this problem with several of my machines.  I noticed that if you unplugged the power and plugged it back in, the machine would jump back up to the brightest setting.  But if you tried to adjust the brightness down and *then* back up, it would never reach the highest brightness.
I tried reinstalling the Power Management Driver and reinstalling Power Manager itself (both to no avail).  I tried to downgrade to BIOS 1.20 but that didn't really have an effect either.
Finally, I downgraded to BIOS 1.19 and that resolved the issue.  However, now I'm having an issue where the brightness changes two settings every time you hit the button (which was supposedly fixed in 1.20...though I had the same issue in 1.21).
I'm pretty frustrated with this machine.  Hopefully the *next* BIOS resolves all of brightness related the issues...

  • Re: HDR5010KB Digital Recorder - signal doesn't always come through using HDMI

    Hi,
I bought the above product in October. Since then I've had an intermittent problem. When switching to the AV channel on my TV, (a Panasonic TX-P42S20B) the signal doesn't always come through when using the HDMI channel (I also have it connected via a scart, and that always works so seems to be an HDMI problem.) It's particularly apparent when the recorder has been used for a while (either for recording or playback.) It's not overheating (or if it is, not to the degree I'm getting a warning message), and turning the power off at the mains seems to rectify the issue, but it's a pain.
I've tried switching the hdmi lead, as well as trying different AV channels on my TV and it hasn't helped. Is this a common problem or do I have a faulty unit?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

no, everything else works fine. I've tried swapping cables & hdmi sockets on the TV with no luck. One thing I have noticed, the recorder also works as a hdmi hub (there's 2 additional inputs). Switching the output to one of the other hdmi's, waiting, then switching the outputback to the recorder usually resolves the problem. it's just a pain having to do it

  • Turning off thumbnail caching doesn't always work

The standard solution for stopping the creation of thumb nail files doesn't always work. This assumes that since you don't display thumbnails you don't create thumb nails. Not true. If you try to move a JPG created by Windows Media Player as message is
displayed. This message asks you if you really want to move a system file. The message displays a thumbnail. So instantly a THUMBS.DB file is created. Now the whole purpose of the exercise was to move stuff out of the folder, so that after a bit of fiddling
you could reorganise & delete the folder. Now you can't delete the folder, unless you mess around and do it later. There is obviously a (non intuitive) work around. But it would be better if Microsoft allowed you to force the delete.

    Hi,
As far as I know there is no official way to turn off thumbnail caching. The only option in Group Policy is Turn off taskbar thumbnails.
Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Turn off taskbar thumbnails
Do you encounter any difficult position that must disable thumbnail caching?
