30-inch ACD and iMac won't go?

I have a 30-inch ACD which I have run for a couple of years from a G4 Powerbook. Very good, no problems. Now I want to semi-retire the Powerbook (keep it for the road and home use rather than office). I was thinking the iMacs look to have the power I need for the office, plus they would work as a second screen, with the 30-inch as the main screen. I do print and web graphics but very little video so I don't really need a Mac Pro.
But today I went into my local Apple reseller and was told the iMacs won't drive a 30" ACD as a second screen. They did a poor job of explaining why that is, when the iMacs have 256Mb graphics against my PB's 128Mb. Is it this to do with the dual link thingy, and if so is there a way round it? (you'll have realised that like my local reseller, I don't really know what I'm talking about here). Hoping for one-eyed person to lead me out of here...
Steve

The 30" display needs dual-link DVI to run at full resolution. The only current Macs with dual-link DVI are the MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro. There is no way to add dual-link DVI to other models.

  • I'm Royally Screwed.  Loaded Microsoft XP today and IMAC won't open

I just got my IMAC today with the OS X (10.5.2) version on it. I followed the instructions to the "T" regarding using bootcamp to load my new Windows XP SP2, like it wanted.
Now, the computer won't logon to either MAC or WINDOWS.....instead it gives me a black screen and says something along the lines of "Hit any button to continue, then it locks up with an error message". The only thing I am able to do and know to do is hold the OPTION button when it's loading (Oh by the way, the computer freezes and I have to shut it off by the button, depressing 5-6 seconds to get it to reload".
If I shut it off and hold the option button, it will let me choose MAC or WINDOWS, but only MAC will load. Trying to load WINDOWS results in the same error message.
In short, I can't turn on the computer without holding the OPTION key to give me the choose, and the only choice that works is MAC.
    Please help.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
when you have booted into OSX go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and choose your OSX partition as the default startup.
Do the needed restart and your iMac should boot into OSX without the Option key.
As for your Windows installation: was it ever successful or did the black screen error message came up during installation ?

  • ITunes AND iMac won't recognize

Hello all! I just recently got an iMac (10.4.11 but will be upgrading very shortly to 10.6). I have an iPad, iPhone, and iPod, but this is my first Mac computer (I have always been a Windows guy......no need to comment on that). I am trying to plug my iPhone into the computer and it is not recognizing it at all. Same goes with the iPad. I am running iTunes 9.2 right now (can't upgrade to iTunes 10 until I upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6). I have tried 4 different USB cables, ALL the USB slots, both on the computer and keyboard. Nothing seems to work. It won't even charge the device (I know it won't for the iPad). I hope that this is a software issue, ie. not using 10.6. Any help would be appreciated.

    Via "About this Mac":
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac4,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.1f5
I assume it is a decent Mac (My university upgraded a lot of the Macs on campus and were giving these away for free).
I ran the Repair Permissions, and that did not work. I looked at the USBs and one of them was showing iPhone. So it does see that it is there. I will be upgrading to 10.6 here in an hour or so.

  • My MacBook and IMac won't download new iTunes 11.1?

For Christmas I received loads of CDs. I also received an iPhone 4. I have a PowerBook G4 and an older iMac model. When I went to load the new CDs onto my new phone for the first time, it came up with text saying I needed an iTunes Store update for 11.1 or up. When I went to download this on the online store it came up with another text box after I had downloaded saying I can't install it. So, I went to the iMac computer and tried this again, it did the same thing except it kept bussing and my phone kept saying do it it this computer? At the same time the computer was saying I need in lock my phone and enter the passcode- I haven't got a passcode on my phone yet. Then finally I gave up because I was getting frustrated.
It could just be because their older computer models but I want to listen to the music at school and I can only do that if it's on my phone. Is there any solution?

    Hi,
It is because the computers are older models. The G4 is not compatible. How old is the imac, what's its processor and OS X?

  • APPLE 30 inch ACD and XBOX 360

Hi, I haven't yet bought the Xbox 360, but wonder if anyone could tell me if its possible to adapt my 30 inch screen to an Xbox 360? Is there, or will there be a special adaptor or something, or will it just fit?
    Thanx in advance
    Pete

Osharu, I wondered if you managed to get your Apple monitor to work with your Xbox 360?
I have tried numerous things like buying gender changers and cables and nothing will work with the 30inch, it just will not comply. It seems to me its just not able to convert the appropriate signals. I even phoned Apple, they were useless and I also phoned Xbox people and they were useless too.
    I bought this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9701799431&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
    and this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9701505659&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
    and this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9701507959&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
    and of course this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8269589300&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
Nothing gets the 30inch running with the 360.
Now I'm told there are different DVI connectors with different pins, maybe I've overlooked things.
Looks like I may have to buy a high Definition telly when I can afford one.
    Regards
    Pete

  • Macbook air and iMac won't home share

I just bought a new Macbook Air (OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.4) and would like to transfer my music from my iMac (year 2009, Mac OS X Version 10.5.8) onto the Macbook. I have turned on home sharing on both devices and also file sharing. I am not seeing a home share icon in my iTunes library on either computer. My iMac is running on iTunes 10.6.3 and my Macbook Air is running iTunes 11.3 . I am hoping that despite the fact they are not updated the same, the music will still be able to transfer. Both devices are on the same wi-fi network as well. Would appreciate any feedback or advice! Thank you.

    Hi myraann19,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to move the music to your new computer with Home Sharing, but there is an issue setting it up. The first article linked below will walk you through setting up home Sharing, it also provides other options for moving the music to a new library also. And, the second article provides tips that should resolve the Home Sharing setup issue.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • ITunes won't open after FW migration between G5 10.4.11 and iMac 10.6.2

I just got my wonderful iMac i7 machine and used the migration assistant to move everything from my G5 OS 10.4.11 machine to the iMac.
Everything has worked without a hitch except I have to re-active Photoshop and I had to re-input my Aperture serial number. No big whoop!
However... this morning I decided to use iTunes and it won't work! I get the message:
"This copy of iTunes is corrupted or is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes."
Now, I know this topic is a very common one however everybody who gets this probably seems to have a totally different issue, like some previous software is incompatible or whatever.
For me, I have no idea why it would be doing this except for one thing: My iTunes library is on an external Firewire drive. Could this be the problem?
Does anybody know what the problem is here?
I would assume that all the settings and prefs would have migrated over, so I don't know how this could be happening.
PS: there is one other issue that might affect it, but I doubt it. Long ago my old external iTunes drive crashed. I was able to recover about 1/8th of my music, and then I started re-ripping my entire CD library. Thankfully, iTunes still showed me all the songs that were once in my library but aren't anymore. And whenever I ripped that song from my CD collection, it just filled in and kept all the old comments and ratings and everything. Wonderful! However.... I wasn't finished by the time I migrated to the iMac... I'm close to being done, but there were a bunch of songs in the database that weren't actually re-ripped. Could this be affecting it?
Anyway... if anybody has some ideas, I'd appreciate it. I'm afraid of re-installing and losing all of my ratings and comments from over 14,000 songs!

If Aperature is working okay, then there may be no need to reinstall it.
I doubt reinstalling it (or anything else) will delete any preferences. Maybe sone obscure 3rd party apps will write over prefs when reinstalling but I have never heard of any Apple applications deleting prefs when reinstalling.
Reinstalling iTunes will not affect anything. All preferences will be as they were.

  • I'm new to the Mac world. I installed my Epson printer on my IMAC and it worked fine. Then I installed Windows7 through Bootcamp and I think it reconfigured a port and now I get a communication error and it won't print. Any help on how do to fix this?

Sorry, I'm new to the Mac world. I recently got a new IMAC and installed my Epson CX5800F printer and it worked fine. • Keys ±, 3, e, d and c won't work on wireless keyboard so I cannot log in to  my iMac

Keys ±, 3, e, d and c won't work on my wireless keyboard. I cannot log in to my iMac because my password includes a 3. I've tried logging in as a guest user and tested the keyboard with Safari. The problem keys do't work there either so it looks like a keyboard issue rather than a software one. Does anyone have any ideas about fixing it please?
(I'm sending this plea from my trusty MacBook Pro!)

Try resetting the PRAM. It may also be that that key has failed......

  • HT1386 After last syncing between iPad3 and iMac, many books I have purchased have cloud symbol and won't open. Afraid to resync as one very large book didn't sync to iMac and afraid of losing it. How do I get these books back?

    1. After my last synching between iPad3 and iMac, most of my downloaded books have a cloud/arrow symbol and won't open. Most PDF files in iBook just disappeared. I am afraid to resync as a book I recently downloaded, which took up a big chunk of my 5GB download limit, doesn't appear on my computer and when I try to sync, I get the message that all my books will be replaced.
    2. Is there any way to read the books downloaded to my iPad on my iMac? Can I download an Ap for that?
I am really disappointed in the interface between my iPad and iMac and the fact that I can't selectively delete items (music and photos) that I have synched to the iPad. It seems like Apple if going toward the Microsoft method of trying to do everything for you, rather than allowing the user to manually do things.

In iBooks on the iPad every book you purchased will be on the Purchased Book collection. Those books that you have purchased in the past but for some reason are not actually on your iPad are still available in the bookstore. They will have the cloud symbol on the corner. You can tap on that book to download it again. You will not be charged for doing this.

I have a 22" iMac desktop running OSX 10.6  Snow Leopard and it won't boot. I've tried shift start, option command P R. It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:

Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the external disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Reformat the internal drive and install OS X.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Open Startup Disk preferences and set the internal drive as the startup volume, then click on the Restart button.
Restore your data from your external drive backup.

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.
