30 Inch Cinema Display with 5 Year old G5 Tower!

I'm trying to get the 30 inch apple cinema display to work with the G5 that i've had for about 5 years. it won't push up to the required resolution and i just can't switch the cable to the other slot. is there a solution. can i even use this monitor with that older machine? please advise.

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
You need a dual link DVI port equipped graphics card to drive the 30" at optimal resolution.
What graphics card is currently installed?

Have just installed new HP 2311x display withe 4 year old MacBook. VGA cable. In mirror mode, at high resolution of 1920x1080, image size on HP display is too small. How can I get it to fill screen? If not in mirror mode, the display looks good, only I can't get the top menu bar (tried to drag it) nor the rest of the desktop. Help?

  • 30 Inch Cinema Display with Vertical Streaks

    Hi All,
I've started to notice very pale vertical streaks on my screen. So far, they seem to be along the edges and are particularly visible when blues and other dark colors are displayed.
It's not a big deal, but the monitor was about $2,000 and is only about 2 years old.
What is this? Is it "normal"?
I have Apple Care... thinking it might be time to use it!
    Thanks,
    Robert

Robert, My 30 Apple monitor started with blueish-green vertical lines outlining the texture of my desktop. It is present on photo's, web-pages and even video I may review. Please send me your email and I can send you one of my photo's to see if your problem is the same. I will be meeting with Apple Support tomorrow for help. Sincerely, Joe Ray at: [email protected]

  • I have an old 23 inch cinema display will it be compadible with the new retina MacBook pro?

So I have an old 23 inch cinema display from 2006 and it's been in our basement for a few years and I'm going to buy the new MacBook pro with retina display I'm wondering if these 2 products will be compatible so I could work at my desk the display Powers up fine I just need to know if they're compatible ?

Assuming your 23" Cinema Display has a DVI connector or a built-in DVI cable, all you'll need will be a mini-displayport-to-single-link-DVI adapter or cable, and the display should work well.

  • Can't synchronize my IPod with the USB-Port of my 27 Inch Cinema Display

I use a 27" Cinema Display with my Windows PC.
It is connected via USB and Display Port.
Synchronizing my IPod at the USB Port of the PC works fine.
Synchronizing my IPod at each of the three USB Ports of the Cinema Display doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks Stephan

Sorry if there is any missing information. I'll try to put all requested information:
The car system is the one that is already installed in my car, I mean it is not something bought externally and installed in my car. The car is a ford S-Max. This car has a complete radio system that includes a USB connection for mp3 players. It works ok but not with the iPod. The IOS installed is the last that has been released, but the iPod was not working with this connection before that update.

  • Can I use a 30" Apple Cinema display with a new 27" iMac?

I have a brand new iMac(27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), i7 3.5 GHz, 32MB RAM, 4GB NVIDIA.  I will soon be upgrading it to Mavericks, if that makes a difference.  My understanding is that the resolution on it is 2560 x 1440.
I'm looking at buying a used 30" Apple Cinema display.  I'd like to use it with my new iMac.  The only advantage for me would be that the 30" screen is larger and things on it easier to see (or so I'm guessing).
I need to know if the 30" Cinema display would work with my new iMac, and if it would, as I'm guessing, give me a larger, easier-to-see screen.
I currently have my new iMac connected to my old mid-2010 iMac as a target display (that old iMac has a minidisplay port--no Thunderbolt), and that works great.  I just want a larger screen.
I called Apple support, and the tech rep wasn't sure it would work.  He seemed to think that the 30" Cinema displays were made with different connections.  Some had minidisplay ports (which he thought would work), and some a cord built into them that provided some other type of connection (that I guess would not work as far as he knew).
Can anyone tell me if this would work?  Would my new iMac and its video card support the 30" Cinema display?  Would the result be as sharp and good-looking as my iMac's built-in 27" display, but only bigger (which is what I'm hoping for)?  Any advice is appreciated.
I don't yet know many of the specifics of the 30" Cinema display I'm considering.  I know it is about 3 years old.  And here is a picture of the back of it:

Yes, you should be able use the 30" Cinema Display with your new iMac without problems. You'll need a mini-DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter
I haven't had the 30" myself to test so I don't know if there any caveats. Perhaps someone else here will have personal experience.
    Regards.

  • Older 20-inch Cinema Display powering on and off repeatedly

I recently inherited an older (clear) 20-inch Cinema Display that I'm trying to use with my G5 dual 2.3 running 10.4.8. After purchasing the expensive DVI to ADC adapter and hooking it up, everything worked fine for about maybe 20 minutes or so until the display started to cycle on and off every two or three seconds (off for a couple seconds, then on for a couple seconds, repeat endlessly). This is accompanied by the power button glowing on and then off so it seems as if the power is cycling on and off by itself.
Any ideas? At first I suspected the ADC/DVI adapter which got really hot when in use, but letting it cool down had no effect on the monitor's behavior. My clunky old 19" CRT display works with no problems, so it's not the video card. The Cinema Display is my old monitor from work, and never had any performance issues, although it's been in storage for almost a year.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Same thing is happening to me. I have the 20" Cinema Display (clear with ADC).
Last night I was in another room and all of a sudden I heard my G4 (Digital Audio) restart. I thought I was hearing things. Then about 3 minutes later I heard it again. I thought my daughter was up working on the computer or something. So I went up and there was no one around, but the computer kept restarting every 1 or two minutes. It was very strange – sometimes it it would go to sleep in the middle of the boot process.
I was able to stop this process eventually by disabling the display power button in the Energy Saver and Displays prefs panels. But I would like this feature to be functional since it makes my setup easier to use for my kids.

  • 20 Inch Cinema Display Went Black

i just rebooted my mac mini that is connected to a 20 inch Cinema Display and the monitor never came back to life. The screen is totally black and the firewire, USB and video cables are plugged into the computer fine. When I look at the computer on Remote Desktop from my laptop i can see that the mac mini is fine. i can also see that when i hit the on/off button on the display that it prompts the shutdown/restart popup on the mac mini so it is communicating with the mac mini. i have also plugged the display into my PB and again I get the shutdown popup when i hit the display's on/off button. is there anything to do to bring it back to life or is it dead? its not even a year old.

    Hey,
Same problem happening here, You described it exactly. Even the magenta box. Mine also happens most in the open windows, not when the desktop. I am trying to figure out when exactly it is happening. The third item I have issues with is that blocks of data are 'stuck' in a genie expansion like motion so it is blurred and dot displaying in that 3x3 inch square section. Could have something to do with refreshing? Sometimes I notice the window will fix if I manually resize the window.
Hope this helps any one who is trying to help us out.

  • Can my G5 support upgrade to the 30-inch Cinema Display?

I'm a book designer working in Adobe's Creative Suite and would LOVE to purchase a 30-inch Cinema Display, especially now that Apple has dropped the price. My G5 is 3 years old and currently connected to a 5-year-old 22-inch Apple cinema display. If I were able to upgrade to the 30-inch display what would I need in addition, other than the NVIDIA GForce 6800 Ultra Graphics Card (which I'm having difficulty finding online)?

I recently went through this, and ended up having to return the 30" for 2 23".
You have to determine whether you have a PCI bay for graphics and other cards( there are many PCI graphics cards that will run the 30") or the older ADP configuration (for which there is one Radeon card, which is currently unavailable, and according to ATI's own customer service, not certain if they are actually in production!).
If you've got PCI bays, you're in business. But I have ADP and my 30 inch was running at 1024x768 resolution and it was a nightmare. Fortunately, the store swapped out for two smaller ones, which run fine with my current card.
It took me over a month to find this out, so I hope you can save some aggravation! Bob Krist

  • What happened to the 30 inch Cinema display?

What happened to the 30 inch Cinema display?
I went into the Apple store to purchase one, all they had was the (too small) 27 inch with the ugly black border.
I did find a few used 30 inch Cinema displays on ebay, they are over $1100 USED.
Any suggestions, for a 30 inch display?

No suggestions, apart from changing to a non-Apple display such as a LaCie one.
I think Apple really makes a mistake with the new displays - they are nifty, granted, if you want to watch TV or the like, but they'll loose the professionals, working all day long with their displays.
    1. the new displays have an excellent resolution, no trouble there, but they are like mirrors, reflecting lamps, etc. and very tiring for the eyes. That's already a problem with my MacBook Pro but I've got to accept it - what else is there to do - and fortunately it's only my secondary system.
    2. we have gotten used to 30" and do not want to downgrade.
I am a translator and need to work with technical plants and several open files, so 30" really helped facilitate work. And now that's all gone as the 27" display definitely is not up to scratch for day-long work...
I ordered a 30" display right when it became available, so it's quite old now. I worry what I'll do when it breaks down ...

  • Help I need a "power brick" for my 30-inch cinema display!!!!!

I recently moved and lost my "power suppy brick" for my 30-inch cinema display..How do I get another one?? The Applestore wanted my old one to do a even exchange?? But I can't do that...And they don't sell the product as a replacement. I'm stuck with a 2 month old display I can't even use! Any ideas???
    Sony Vaio   Windows XP

If the display is covered by AppleCare call 1(800)275-2273 and ask for a replacement power adapter. They will send the new unit first, and you are supposed to return the bad unit. You give them a credit card number when you order the part, so they can charge you, if for some reason they don't receive the old part.

  • Adding 30-inch Cinema display to a new iMac. Not getting full resolution.

I have just bought a new 27-inch quad core imac i5 and have added my old 30-inch cinema display (five years old) as a second monitor but the resolution is poor - 1280 x 800 compared to 2560 x 1440. How do I improve the resolution as it's almost not worth having?

You need to use a dual-link DVI adaptor to get a higher resolution from that display.

  • Best performance dual 30 inch cinema displays   dual x1900 card(s) ?

I am trying to get the maximum performance out of my system. I have a Mac Pro with two 30 inch cinema displays. I have them both connected to one X1900 card.
I use LightRoom as my photo work flow manager. I spread the library across both monitors as I sort thru photos.
Performance is good but sorting thru several thousand RAW files I need every bit of speed I can get.
Would I get better performance if I used two x1900 cards, one for each monitor? how about the 7300 or the FX4500? would those improve speed or better just for gaming?
thanks in advance for any help.

Two Quad-core with 8-16GB RAM, and your media fles on RAID.
I'd configure with 4 x 750GB WD RE2s. Can't easily swap or upgrade cpu so that is a given until you know and Apple has something that would make sense to buy/swap to newer faster systems (maybe in a year or next summer).
There is no support for two 16x lane slots. Maybe in the future but not now.
I doubt your performance is limited or factor of the twin 30s on the Radeon. It might. Try running with just one monitor for a few hours.

  • Cannot match profiles on two 23 inch Cinema Displays

I have just bought a new 23 inch Cinema Display in addition to my original which is only 8 months old. Using Xrite (GretagMacbeth)Eye One profiler the screens still do not match. The new screen appears much brighter and the 'old' screen much duller. Placing a blank white box created in Photoshop CS3 over the two screens shows a marked difference. Am I to expect this with a screen only 8 months old? How can I get them to match without 'cheating' with the white point? Serious help needed. many thanks.

I don't think that there are any PCI-X graphics cards, and if there were, drivers would be another issue. PCI cards would work in a PCI-X slot, but unfortunately, none of those cards are capable of displaying dual link DVI. The best graphics core you can hope to get via PCI is an NV 6200 or ATI 9250
Also, there aren't any Mac supported AGP cards that have 2 dual-link DVI ports, only 1.
The only way you could do this is to upgrade to a PCI-express based machine and use the Nvidia Quadro FX4500, which is a $1600+ card + the cost of the new G5...
A new G5 MIGHT not be so expensive, as there is or about to be a mass exodus of pro shops that will be getting out of the G5 to move to the Intel Mac Pro soon.
If you had another dual-link capable machine, you could remote desktop in and use a KVM to switch between machines / monitors, but this is sort of a silly complex way of doing something that should be simple through hardware upgrades.

  • Acrylic 20" Cinema Display with new MacPro

As I read the posts here, to use the old cinema display with an ADC connector I will need to buy Apple DVI to ADC adapter to connect my 20" cinema display with ADC to the new MacPro?
This new DVI to ADC adapter provides power for the cinema display as I understand which is why it's so expensive whereas when cinema display was connected to my Powermac G5 the power came thru the ADC connection?
    Is this correct?
