30" LCD Cinema display - sporadically blanks out, need to restart Mac Pro

2007 vintage 30" LCD Cinema HD display running off a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT. Was Mac OS 10.5.latest, just upgraded to 10.6.4 with no effect on the problem.
This has happened perhaps 8 or 10 times over the last few months, and IIRC always when I'm playing WoW. I know WoW heats up my Pro more than anything else because I can hear the cooling fans speeding up when I load and play it.
The symptom is the screen goes totally black. The little white light down the bottom-right of the display comes on. If I push the power button on the display the white light goes bright, but there's no other reaction. The capslock light on the keyboard still reacts so I know I don't have a total system hang.
I shut down the whole Mac Pro by holding in its On button for 10 seconds, and it powers down as normal. But the white light on the display is still on, and I have to disconnect the power from the display so the white light goes off; only then I turn the Pro back on and all is well again.
The screen always gets very warm to the touch - I can hold my hand on it OK so it's not burning hot but it still seems too hot to me. Is this normal for this screen? It seems a little odd there are no cooling vents if so. Having just restarted iStat Pro says Mac HD (I think that's the display) is 46c, CPUs and everything else 40c or below. It is coming on for summer here but today is not hot, iStat says ambient is 23c.
So what am I asking for? I guess some sort of validation of my issue, advice, and where I should start diagnosis - display, video, display power, the Mac itself ... or should I just get Apple out here? I do have Apple Care.
Thanks all.

And it's happened twice since then, both while playing WoW. After the latest reboot my temps are 49c for display, 45c and 48c for CPUs. The Mac has been on for over 6 hours before I ran up Wow with no problem, in Wow for maybe 5 minutes and there it goes.
The latest Mac updates to iTunes 10.1 and OS 10.6.5 were applied a few hours ago, well before this latest crash.
My best guess is that either some component has gone temperature-intolerant that didn't used to be, or there is something in the latest WoW version that is triggering some hardware, driver or OS problem. I really don't have much of an idea where to go now. Any suggestions?

  • HT1338 cinema Display 30" no longer recognized by my mac pro? What can I do? It worked fine until now.

Cinema display 30" no longer recognized by my mac pro. Until now it worked without problems, then after a crash it fails to recognize the display.
Now it runs in a far lower resolution. What can I do?
I tried to get da driver for it, but could not find any.

Try the other DVI port on the graphics card.  On early Mac Pros, only one port is the dual-link DVI needed for full resolution on the 30" display.  Make sure the display's USB cable is plugged into the computer.

  • 17" LCD Cinema Display does not work on G4 Tower with ATI 9000

    Hi,
I have a G4 Tower with the original AGP ATI Radeon 9000B video card. My friend gave me this unit just recently but not the original monitor. Well after he got his new 30" Cinema Display he gave me the original 17"LCD Cinema Display. I was so happy, plugged it into the card and fired up the CPU but nothing! just blank! It is not getting any power for the USB ports or anything. My buddy says the monitor was checked before I picked it up. I yanked the Video card out and put it back in, inside the CPU was clean as was the card, put it back together and still nothing. The VGA monitor I have is connected via adapter to the other input and works fine. I tried doing display settings and the Cinema is not even detected. Is the Video card fried on the digital side?
Do I need a new one?
Here is the info on the CPU:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    Serial Number: XB0120xxxxx
    Any help wold be appreciated.

    Hi MFG,
    Welcome to the discussions.
The G4 AGP Graphics model originally shipped with an ATY Rage 128 graphics card. The ATI Radeon 9000 graphics card that is installed in your G4 is not the original card.
The ATI Radeon 9000 comes with a native ADC port (which you are trying to use). This port is only fully functional if the computer is ADC enabled. Your model of G4 is, unfortunately, not ADC enabled.
You can confirm this by opening the computer and having a look at the AGP slot (where the graphics card is installed). In ADC enabled Macs, there is an extra slot at one end of the AGP slot to accomodate an "extra leg" that the ADC graphics cards (such as the ATI 9000) have. This extra leg supplies the power and USB feed. You'll probably find this extra leg with no slot for it to go into.
What this means is that you are not getting power and USB feed through the ADC port to your display.
If you want to get the 17" ADC Apple LCD display working off this card (it's definitely the LCD display and not the CRT display, please confirm), you will need to use a DVI to ADC adaptor such as this one:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD
and run it off the DVI output.
You can run your VGA screen at the same time (if you want to) off the ADC output by using this adaptor:
    http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0117-ADCV
This will work off the ADC port because, although the ADC port is not getting USB or power feed, it's still getting the DVI feed (which is what this adaptor needs).
    Cheers!
    Karl

I tightened all HD screws and it didn't help. With the machine running and side of the case off, I physically stopped both the video card fan and the front case fan with my finger for a couple seconds and the noise continued. I also took all hard drives out one by one and rebooted each time. Again, the noise continued until I took out the Mac HD in Bay 1, rebooted, and I had a very quiet, silent machine. The issue is the hard drive in bay 1 that shipped with the computer, it's without a doubt causing the hum/woosh sound. I still need to know if I can safely swap the Mac HD from bay 1 to bay 4 without any issues to the operating system. I would like to try that to see if it dampens the noise but I also want to make sure this swap won't screw up my machine at all.

  • Do I need a specific Mac Pro video card or will any do?

Hi, I had a quick question. I'm looking at purchasing a 2010 8-core Mac Pro and was wondering about the video card. Is there a specific video card needed for the Mac Pro or can I purchase just a typical ATI 5870 from ebay and install that? Is there really a difference between a PC graphic cards and a Mac graphics card?

Stick to the Apple cards. There is an important difference, and that is non-Apple cards do not work until the startup sequence is completed unless you use them on VGA. That means you cannot use any normal startup keyboard shortcuts unless the card is in VGA mode. This is because non-Apple cards do not have the Apple bootable ROM.
Apple sells the 5870 directly on their website. And, there's nothing wrong with the 5770 card that comes with the Mac Pro. Be sure you really need the performance of the 5870 before spending the extra money for it.

  • Apple Cinema Display 23" - Blank Screen, "short-long-short" LED code

    Hello everyone.
This sounds like something of an epidemic... My Apple Cinema 23" HD Display (bought Dec. 2007) hasn't been turning on after a power outage hit our area last week.
The Computer and Display were OFF when the outage occurred. Everything was plugged into a surge suppressor. Everything ELSE plugged in to the suppressor is fine (including my Mac CPU)... but not the monitor.
It’s not dead-dead…. It’s a blank screen but there IS a morse-code flash on the LED (short-long-short). According to Apple Support’s LED Translation, it SHOULD be something to do with the power adaptor. The adaptor IS correct… a 90 watt… but just in case I bought ANOTHER 90w adaptor brick. I plugged the monitor to the new brick. THE RESULT WAS THE SAME.
I’ve tried power cycling, I’ve tried plugging it into different outlets, I’ve tried connecting to other computers. The same LED result remains.
And, yes, of course, I’ve got no Apple Support, and from what I read in similar posts, outside-the-warranty repairs could hit around $400. I REFUSE!
For now I have a Samsung monitor from Costco. It’s not bad, but it’s not the Apple monitor with its awesome color-fidelity.
I've read some other posts with the same problem (LED blink code and all) elsewhere but haven't got a solid answer.
I wonder… has anyone else incurring this same problem (with the same LED flashing deal) tried to use a 150-WATT adaptor brick? I would try this myself, but I’m currently financially unable (and personally unwilling) to throw more cash at this problem unless I know it’ll fix it.

    Hi all!
As mentioned on the title of this topic *I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM* with my 23" Cinema Display...
Before the failure, the monitor *WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION* (trust me when I comment this, my whole life is in front of a monitor)
*THE PROBLEM SHOWED UP THE DAY I MOVED THE MONITOR TO AN OTHER OFFICE* (???). Please note that *I TOOK EXTRA CARE WHEN I MOVED THE MONITOR*, besides, when something costs around 1K you owe to.
*I TRIED AN 150W ADAPTER ON IT AND WORKED FINE!!!* Just like before.
But since *IT WAS UNDER GUARANTY* I sent it to the local distributor who eventually *REPLACED IT WITH A "NEW" ONE*, which after remarks from my side it turned out it wasn't "new" but re-manufactured by Apple (off course, he guarantied me the parts in it, where brand new and had 0 hours of usage).
In my question to the technical representative of Apple *"WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY MONITOR"*, he answered me that *THE INVERTER WAS FAULT*.
After that I questioned him *"WHY MY MONITOR MANAGED TO WORK WITH THE 150W ADAPTER?"*, he answered me that *THE EXTRA CHARGE OF THE 150W ADAPTER WAS ABLE TO "EXCITE" SUCCESSFULLY THE FAULTY INVERTER IN ORDER TO WORK* and that *IT WAS A MATTER OF MONTHS FOR THE MONITOR TO FAIL AGAIN*.
That's my story... I hope it may help some of you... Personally I can't have an opinion on the matter, since I'm not a technician. The only thing on which I can comment is that *A 1K MONITOR SHOULD BE WAY MORE DURABLE AND TOLERANT WHEN YOU TRANSFER IT AROUND (if that cause the problem of course)*

  • MBP and LED Cinema Display Color Washed Out After Screen Saver

When coming out of screen saver, often the color profile on either my LED Cinema Display or the MBP LCD is messed up. The color looks washed out. Simply going to the Color tab in the Displays preference pane fixes this.
How do I get this to stop?
    Thanks,
    Bobby

My 13" MBP has now started to do the same thing as described. The thing is, it has never done this since I bought it in late July 2009. I have iWork installed, Firefox, Skype, and Pixelmator. I may have a clue, however, for the Apple people: my MBP never did this until last night and this morning. The only thing I changed yesterday was removing the 2 gig of memory and installing 4 gig. I also tried the translation widget for the first time.

  • I'm trying to connect my 23" Cinema display to my iMac, need help with connector cable.

I'm trying to connect my 23" Cinema Display monitor to my iMac. The adaptor cable I ordered came with a female, I need a male adaptor. Any ideas where I might find one? I purchased the BlueRigger Mini Displayport Male to DVI Female Adapter Cable.

I have the 23" aluminum Cinema Display. I just can't seem to find the right adaptor for the monitor femal plug on the backside. I've tried a Bluerigger but it was a female adaptor. I believe I need a male.

  • 24" LCD cinema display panel weight

does the spec weight of 21 lbs. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/SP502 ) for the 24" apple cinema display include the stand? If so, what is the weight of the panel without the stand?  I'm looking at monitor arms and most say that the max weight is 20 lbs..
Also, does anyone know the weight of the VESA mount plate for the cinema display?
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD179ZM/A/vesa-mount-adapter-kit-for-imac-andl ed-cinemaor-applethunderbolt-display?fnode=53#overview
    Thanks!

Perhaps all it needed was a restart. I first tried clamshell mode and there was no flicker. Then I tried with the lower graphics and no flicker. Now I've restarted with higher graphics turned back on and it hasn't flickered yet. I've re-opened all the programs I had open at the time as well.
I've marked this issue as resolved but if it recurs I'll be sure to post here.

  • HT2811 Cinema Displays 27", blank screen and doesn't come on.

I have two Cinema Displays 27" on a Mac Pro, one display powers up and works fine, the other stays blank with the light blinking three times. Short, Long, Short, meaning my power adaptor is wrong, but switching adaptors doesn't work.
I have read the Apple article about the monitor things it's using the wrong adaptor. But mine I've been using is the correct one for the size and it even works when I switch adaptors and leads with my working display.
Not sure how to fix this. I've tried unplugging everything, and plugging one thing in at a time and restarting to try and isolate any problems.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Rocky Rakoon,
Thank you for your post, and welcome to the Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your Apple Cinema Display is not turning on upon startup. I'd like to reset the following, as it may resolve your issue:

  • 30" cinema display remains blank on reboot

This subject is still alive, even if the discussions are archived.
I have had the problem of the black screen on restart many times, with a G5 and with a Mac Pro. It was always solved by resetting the PMS and then the PRAM. However, yesterday we had a power outage (very common here) and on reboot there was nothing happening on the display. I did the reset but it was still blank. Turned the MacPro on with the USB and Firewire plugs from the ACD disconnected and the display worked fine. Plug the USB cable back in, the screen goes off etc etc. Tried the reset again, leaving it decoupled for a full minute. Still no joy.
Before I go and buy a USB hub and a longer firewire cable, I wondered if there had been any developments on this front since we last met to complain about the very poor support we are getting for this very very expensive display?
    Drew

I had the same problem a minute ago. The power light sometimes comes on, but the screen is just blank (either lit blank or off, depending on the power state. I read elsewhere in an archived thread that removing all the cables and powering back up worked. I had a mouse plugged into my kyb and the kyb plugged into the back of the display. Into gfx card I had the main video cable + USB feed-through for the mouse & kyb. I unplugged everything and left it a few secs. I then just plugged in the video cable and booted up. SUCCESS! - I then re-connected the mouse to the kyb & the kyb to the back of the display and its all working fine so far.
Note: This was just after a Lion security update came down but I hadn't rebooted yet. I'm now running 10.8.4
    Apple Cinema Display 30-inch DVI (2500 x1600)
    Early 2009 Mac Pro
    2x2.26 Quad Intel Xeon
    8Gb 1066Mhz DDR3 ECC

  • 23 inch LCD Cinema Display Power on?

I just got one of the older aluminum body cinema displays from a garage sale. I came home plugged it into the wall and hit the power button and nothing is happening should it be turning on and displaying something on the screen or do you have to plug it into a macbook/computer for it to power on?

I had the exact same problem and fortunately I own a second 23" display so I swapped AC adapters and it came back to life!
But the bad news is that I then bought a used adapter on ebay to replace it and that adapter died as well. Same display killed both dead adapters. I'm wondering if the display could be drawing too much power.

  • Cinema Display goes to sleep after connection to MacBook Pro.

Hi, I've been using my 21" Cinema Display from my old G5 as the monitor for my new MacBook Pro.  I used a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adaptor to connect it to the MacBook Pro, and it has worked very well - until today.
Now, as soon as I turn the MacPro on (and quickly shut the lid as usual) the cinema display comes up and then - goes to sleep. And I cannot wake it up! If I open the MacPro, both monitors come up. However I'd really like to use just one monitor, the cinema display.  What has happened ?  I don't think I changed a thing.
    Hope someone can help?
    Thanks

Have you (perhaps unknowingly) got one of the screen corners set to put the screen to sleep in Exposé. System Preferences>Exposé & Spaces.
You normally have to deliberately point the mouse to the corner to sleep the screen (if active corners have been set up) perhaps if the mouse is left just hovering near an active screen corner maybe the slightest of movements is triggering the screen to sleep. Worth a look.
