30 minutes to set artwork?

Ok this is bugging me REALLY bad now. Whenever I want to add any artwork or change the info of a file in iTunes, be it music, movie or TV Show etc. It takes absolutely ages to do so.
For instance I have added 3 new TV episodes to my library. Adding the artwork to these three files has taken just over an hour of SPOD delightfulness. If I want to change the name of a file, the date, basically anything in the info screen it takes nearly 30 minutes everytime. Someone PLEASE tell me why?
This has been happening on and off since 7.2 now it is every single time in 7.4.

Would you say that your system is generally healthy? Have you done any maintenance or troubleshooting? I think it wouldn't hurt to boot into Single User Mode (hold down Apple-S keys while restarting computer) and run /sbin/fsck -fy
Also, have you checked the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive in Disk Utility? Definitely do that if you haven't. Running third-party disk repair utilities such as DiskWarrior might do a world of good as well.
Or, just do like me, and get crazy with your system for another week (provided your important data is backed up somewhere/somehow) until Leopard gets dropped in the postbox and start from scratch .

  • Am i the only one who spent 15 minutes to set a picture to home screen?

    It's just soooo slow and "zoom in" to my pictures makes the quality looks really bad! Overall, i'm quite not happy with IOS 7 cause it's really slow at all, i'm using ipad and just updated to the new IOS. Eventhough this is a final but it's still slow, which is the reason i won't update for my iphone!

    It does take a while to set the wallpaper, but hardly took me 15 minutes. I was surprised though about how long it did take.
    When you enlarge the photo that you use for wallpaper, you enlarge the size of the pixels as well. The more you zoom in, the less clear the photo will be. You would need an extremely hi-res photo in order to zoom in and not lose some quality.

  • .Mac mail to iphone not occuring every 30 minutes as set

    I have the phone set to retrieve mail from .Mac every 30 minutes. It is not doing this. When I go into Mail, that is when it starts to retrieve mail.
    It seemed to be working a few days ago. I wonder if this stopped with the 1.1.1 update?

    The difference between POP and IMAP are the difference in how the two protocols work. Essentially, messages are removed from the email host's servers (in your case swbell.net) when using POP, wherease IMAP leaves a copy of the messages on the server for later. You will notice a difference for instance, if you had another machine you wanted to set up a mail client on or if you had to perform an erase in reinstall, you'd lose all emails if you used POP without making the client leave the messages on the server since they only exist on your mac.
    In Mac Mail's Preferences -> Accounts -> Account Information, you can tell Mac Mail to stop deleting the message from the server so your iPad and other devices can also grab the messages as well.
    As far as mailboxes, with a POP account, those mailboxes are created locally, so they only exist on  your mac. If the account was IMAP, you'd have the option to create the mailbox on the server, which would allow you to not worry about losing messages in the event of an erase and reinstall, especially if you didn't have a backup.
    The iPhone and other devices will only be able to grab what is set up on the server, so in my opinion, IMAP is the superior protocol, as it has less chance for data loss than POP, even if you don't have a backup. Providers such as GMail and Yahoo offer both, but most Gmail accounts are IMAP, and it simply depends on your account if your provider is Yahoo.
    iCloud is completely different; It is an IMAP email server provided by Apple. Think of it as another email address you have. Unfortunately, it will do you no good unless you start using it for email as you do with your current one.
    Hopefully that helps a little and isn't too technical.

  • Can't set artwork in iTunes

    When I select an album that has not artwork, choose 'Get Info', check the "Artwork" box, drag a picture to the blank box, apply it, etc. It acts as if everything is working. However, no artwork is displayed with any of the album items.

    search the board. it seems to be a known problem with AIFF files in the new 7.3 iTunes.

  • Ratings removed from songs 20 minutes after setting

    I spent an hour going through 200 songs on my iTunes library, starring them and putting them in playlists. Twenty minutes later I noticed they were all gone, as if I didn't touch a thing. Playlist information has gone, ratings have gone, and a selection of songs I deleted are now back in my library!?
    It's very frustrating spending time organising music only to find out your time has been completely wasted.
    Please help and advise what I can do to avoid this happening again.

  • How can i set a task/reminder from an email?

    Hi all, I have a 64gb iPad 2 running iOS 5.1 which work have supplied me with, I'm an apple n00b but am quite experienced with Windows. My mail is synchronised with the office server and I can access that on my Windows laptop or my iPad.
    When I receive a new email that I need to either reply to or perform an action in order for it to be considered complete (ie not just a FYI email that I can file away), I can set this email as a to-do task in Windows, set a coloured reminder to the email, flag the email with a reminder to pop onto my screen etc at a later date - ie loads of ways to highlight to me that this needs to be actually actioned but there doesn't seem to be any way of doing anything with the embedded email program other than mark it as unread.
    At the moment I'm resorting to creating a subfolder called "To do" and manually moving these emails there for the minute but setting a reminder or task, which I've had the ability to set on Windows Outlook since the 90's, seems impossible on the iPad. Other than this my only options seem to be marking the email as unread or going to the reminders app myself and type a 'manual' reminder referencing this email.
    Is there any way, or app, that I can either create a reminder/task straight to reminders from the email or, at the very least, do something to differentiate it from the rest of the emails in my inbox (even highlighting it in a colour would do)?
    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,
    Matt

    This is an extremely vexing problem and I would like to know if anyone has a solution please.  Here is my situation:
    Using standalone (simply my home one not connected to network or exchange) Outlook 2007 (soon to upgrade to 2013) on PC - Windows 8.1.  Have an iPhone 6.  Want the closest possible functionality (particularly categories, reminders, etc.) on my iPhone for my standalone Outlook.  The only thing I have found close is DejaOffice and Companion Link (which work together).  I am seriously considering as appears a close mirror image for all things I do, but they don't have email.  So, can someone please give me either a) a better comprehensive application/solution; b) a separate 3rd party email app that will allow me to flag an email, on either computer or iPhone with perfect sync, as a reminder without having to create a separate task; or c) your best/closest solution set to be as seamlessly productive as possible using either native or 3rd party email app and your :"manual workaround."  Thanks.

  • 15-minute passcode lock self-defeating

    I've learned that having an Exchange account (apparently only Exchange 2007, not 2003)  results in a diminished set of choices regarding the time interval before the passcode lock sets, and that is consistent with my experience: the four-hour option was available when I had only an Exchange 2003 account installed on the device, and this shortened to 15 minutes after installing an Exchange 2007 account. In my case, it is not a matter of an employer making the requirement: I am the employer, and I am using, in this case, Microsoft Business Online Productivity Services--i.e., hosted Exchange vs. in-house. I have not yet found a setting to override this ridiculously short interval on the Exchange server, but at least I know where to look, and it would not seem to be anywhere on my devices. The fact that I can choose not to use a passcode lock altogether demonstrates that this is not a security requirement imposed by the Exchange server, just a more limited range of options. The option not to use the passcode lock would not be available if it were a true security issue for Exchange, one presumes. I don't recall, by the way, such behavior in Windows smartphones I've had in the past.
    Is anyone else finding the 15-minute passcode lock on the iPad and iPhone as annoying and dangerous as I am? I have disabled the lock altogether as a result. It is terribly annoying to have only 15 minutes to set my iPad aside before having to unlock it, and it renders the iPhone downright dangerous in the car--and I'm talking about turning iTunes on or off, or simply checking a map. I never talk or text while driving.
    I thought four hours was a reasonable (for me) compromise between security and usability, but someone (Apple? Microsoft?) has decided we all need more protection than that and has reduced the intervals to a mere 15-minute maximum. Now I have no other security than wiping my device remotely if it falls out of my possession. The setting screen tells us that "shorter times are more secure," as if it were scolding us. I would have even greater security if I had never bought the devices, but that is beside the point.
    I don't understand why users should not be able to decide for themselves the degree of passcode security they desire and need on their devices.

    Rocka wrote:
    Common... Go to **** with security, there's not much security regarding iOS anyway. This was a convenient setting for various reasons, like locking the device overnight so kids can't play with my iPad in the morning.
    Unlocking it everytime I need to use my camera (Camera+), check email, or write something is a nonsense. So I understand those resulting in NO LOCK AT ALL.
    Pitty, having it set for an hour or two was a great "semi-secure" thing. Now there's nothing.
    Why the heck is it related to Exchange? Is this some kind of Gates' revenge or what?
    And what's the point in having a full choice from 1-2-3-4-5 minutes on the iPhone - what's the security difference between 3 and 5 minutes? Can anybody tell?
    Regarding the car conversations - those who conversate while driving are dangerous? How can we eliminate in-car conversations then? Forbid couples and families driving together?
    The exchange feature allows the owner of the exchange server (and thus the one who controls the exchange accounts hosted on it) the ability to secure their empolyees accounts.  Since anything their employees house on the company's exchange server is the property of the company, they get to set the security policy as they see fit.  Exchange then pushes out a security certificate over the air that overrides the default security of the device's OS and emposes the corporate policy.  So no, it has nothing to do with Bill Gates, it has to do with a system that is primarily geared towards enterprise and corporate deployment, and enabling the owners of those systems to empose their own security standards and practices on devices used to connect to their corporate servers.  It also, btw, gives them the ability to remotely wipe your exhange account off the device at any time.
    I've never worked for any company that allows empolyees to use personal cell phones for access to company accounts without using some means of imposing security on the connecting devices - Exchange allows them a simple and standard way to do that.
    A passcode lock on an iOS device offers at least as much security as possible on any smart phone.  If employed with reasonable time out settings to avoide giving a theif open access, it does offer good protection against anyone actually gaining access to information on the device.  They can always restore the device as new, wiping it clean in the process, and go about using it as theirs, but your information at least, has been secured.
    It is certainly more than something to merely keep the kids out. If you use online banking or other financial apps, don't want someone reading your email or getting the addresses of all your family and friends, keep work documents or other confidential information, then you should be using a passcode lock on your device, with a fairly short default timeout.  Complain about the inconvenience all you wish, but don't disable the security passcode and then complain when the device is stolen and someone uses the infromation to aid them in stealing your identity, spam'ing your contacts, sending your personal photo's to anyone and everyone, posting your personal information on web sites, or whatever else they may do with full access to your iPhone and its contents.
    To my mind, it would be akin to leaving the doors to your house unlocked and wide open, because you find the act of having to dig keys out of your pocket everytime you come home too inconvenient.  Of course, you are free to do that too, but then don't complain when someone walks away with all your personal items and information.  Or perhaps a better analogy would be, don't complain when someone walks in to your house, sits down at your computer (which of course you have left logged in, or have set to autologin every time) and happily reads your email, copies down your online passwords, goes into your accounts and generally makes your life far, far more "inconvenient" then it ever would have been had you just logged out, and locked the door.
    There is a reason why identity theft is a multi-billion dollar a year crime category - so many people make it so easy for their personal information to be compromised that a world full of unsecured smart phones and tablets is a crook's dream world, like a kid in a candy shop.

  • How to set up iPhone 5 iOS 6 email with IMAP over SSL on a custom port?

    Basically I have the same problem as this guy 5 years ago but the thread contained no useful answer. Maybe there are people out there who became smarter in the meantime? Please help me out how to get my iPhone read emails via IMAP over SSL on a custom port to the corporate server. The issue is that the iPhone only seems to work if you use the standard 993 port for IMAPS, not with a custom port as we have. I've installed the corporate root certificate in a profile, and it shows up as trusted and verified in the phone, so that should not be the issue. The mail app in the iPhone tries to connect, I can verify that from the server, but then does nothing, doesn't try to authenticate, doesn't log out, nothing is going on, and then drops the connection after 60 seconds. Repeats this every 5 minutes (as set to fetch e-mail every 5 minutes.)
    Original thread 5 years ago: https://discussions.apple.com/message/8104869#8104869

    Solved it by some (a lot) of fiddling.
    Turns out it's not a bug in the iPhone, it's a feature.
    Here's how to make it work.
    DOVECOT
    If the IMAPS port is anything other than 933 (the traditional IMAPS port) the iPhone's Mail App takes the "Use SSL" setting on the IMAP server as 'TLS', meaning it starts the communication in plain text and then issues (tries to issue) the STARTTLS command to switch the connection to encrypted. If, however, Dovecot is set up to start right away in encrypted mode, the two cannot talk to each other. For whatever reason neither the server nor the client realizes the connection is broken and only a timeout ends their misery.
    More explanation about SSL/TLS in the Dovecot wiki: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SSL
    So to make this work, you have to set Dovecot the following way. (Fyi, I run Dovecot 2.0.19, versions 1.* have a somewhat different config parameters list.)
    1. In the /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf file make sure you specify the inet_listener imap and disable (set its port to 0) for imaps like this:
    service imap-login {
      inet_listener imap {
        port = --your port # here--
      inet_listener imaps {
        port = 0
        ssl = yes
    This of course enables unencrypted imap for all hackers of the universe so you quickly need to also do the things below.
    2. In the /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-ssl.conf file, make sure you set (uncomment) the following:
    ssl = required
    This sets Dovecot to only serve content to the client after a STARTTLS command was issued and the connection is already encrypted.
    3. In /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-auth.conf set
    disable_plaintext_auth = yes
    This prevents plain text password authentication before encryption (TLS) is turned on. If you have also set ssl=required as per step 2, that will prevent all other kinds of authentications too on an unencrypted connection.
    When debugging this, please note that if you connect from localhost (the same machine the server runs on) disable_plaintext_auth=yes has no effect, as localhost is considered secure. You have to connect from a remote machine to make sure plain text authentication is disabled.
    Don't forget service dovecot restart.
    To test if your setup works as it's supposed to, issue the following (green) from a remote machine (not localhost) (I'm using Ubuntu, but telnet and openssl is available for almost all platforms) and make sure Dovecot responds with something like below (purple):
    telnet your.host.name.here yourimapsportnumber
    * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE STARTTLS LOGINDISABLED] Dovecot ready.
    Most importantly, make sure you see 'STARTTLS' and 'LOGINDISABLED'. Then issue STARTTLS and hopefully you see something like this:
    a STARTTLS
    a OK Begin TLS negotiation now.
    (The 'a' in front of STARTTLS is not a typo, a prefix is required by the IMAP server in front of all commands.)
    Close the telnet (with 'a logout' or Ctrl+C) and you can use openssl to further investigate as you would otherwise; at the end of a lot of output including the certificate chain you should see a line similar to the one below:
    openssl s_client -starttls imap -connect your.domain.name.here:yourimapsportnumber
    . OK Pre-login capabilities listed, post-login capabilities have more.
    You can then use the capability command to look for what authentication methods are available, if you see AUTH=PLAIN, you can then issue a login command (it's already under an encrypted connection), and if it's successful ("a OK Logged in"), then most likely your iPhone will be able to connect to Dovecot as well.
    a capability
    * CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE AUTH=PLAIN
    a login username password
    * CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE SORT SORT=DISPLAY THREAD=REFERENCES THREAD=REFS MULTIAPPEND UNSELECT CHILDREN NAMESPACE UIDPLUS LIST-EXTENDED I18NLEVEL=1 CONDSTORE QRESYNC ESEARCH ESORT SEARCHRES WITHIN CONTEXT=SEARCH LIST-STATUS
    a OK Logged in
    POSTFIX
    Likewise, you have to set Postfix to wait for STARTTLS before encrypting the communication.
    1. You have to delete the setting smtpd_tls_wrappermode=yes from /etc/postfix/master.cf and/or /etc/postfix/main.cf, if it was enabled. This will mean Outlook won't be able to connect any more because it requires a TSL connection without issuing STARTTLS as per Postfix documentation (haven't tested.) In my case we don't use Outlook so I didn't care. Outlook + iPhone + custom SMTPS port are simply not possible together at the same time as far as I understand. Pick one to sacrifice.
    2. Require encrypted (TLS) mode for any data transfer in /etc/postfix/main.cf:
    smtpd_tls_security_level = encrypt
    3. Authentication should only happen while already in encrypted (TLS) mode, so set in /etc/postfix/main.cf:
    smtpd_tls_auth_only = yes
    Don't forget postfix reload.
    To test if this works, issue the following telnet and wait for the server's greeting:
    telnet your.host.name.here yoursmtpsportnumber
    220 your.host.name ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu)
    Then type in the EHLO and make sure the list of options contains STARTTLS and does not include an AUTH line (that would mean unencrypted authentication is available):
    ehlo your.host.name.here
    250-STARTTLS
    Then issue starttls and wait for the server's confirmation:
    starttls
    220 2.0.0 Ready to start TLS
    Once again, it's time to use openssl for further testing, detailed info here http://qmail.jms1.net/test-auth.shtml
    CERTIFICATES
    You also need to be aware that iOS is somewhat particular when it comes to certificates. First of all, you have to make sure to set the following extensions on your root certificate (probably in the [ v3_ca ] section in your /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf, depending on your openssl setup), especially the 'critical' keyword:
    basicConstraints = critical,CA:true
    keyUsage = critical, cRLSign, keyCertSign
    subjectKeyIdentifier=hash
    authorityKeyIdentifier=keyid:always,issuer:always
    And then on the certificate you sign for your mail server, set the following, probably in the [ usr_cert ] section of /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf:
    basicConstraints=CA:FALSE
    keyUsage = nonRepudiation, digitalSignature, keyEncipherment
    subjectKeyIdentifier=hash
    authorityKeyIdentifier=keyid,issuer
    subjectAltName = DNS:your.domain.name.here
    issuerAltName=issuer:copy
    Please note, the above are results of extensive google-ing and trial and error, so maybe you can omit some of the stuff above and it still works. When it started working for me, I stopped experimenting because figuring this all out already took way too much time. The iPhone is horribly undocumented when it comes to details of its peculiar behaviors. If you experiment more and have more accurate information, please feel free to post here as a reply to this message.
    You have to import your root certificate into your iPhone embedded in a profile via the iPhone Configuration Utility (free, but only available in Windows or a Mac; details here: http://nat.guyton.net/2012/01/20/adding-trusted-root-certificate-authorities-to- ios-ipad-iphone/ ), after having first added it to Windows' certificate store as a trusted root certificate. This way the Utility will sign your certificate for the phone and it becomes usable; if you just add it from the phone it will be there but won't be used. Using a profile has the added benefit of being able to configure mail settings in it too, and that saves a lot of time when you have to install, remove, reconfigure, install again, etc. a million times until it works.
    Another undocumented constraint is that the key size is limited to a max of 4096. You can actually install a root certificate with a larger key, the iPhone Configuration Utility will do that for you without a word. The only suspicious thing is that on the confirmation screen shown on your iPhone when you install the profile you don't get the text "Root Certificate/ Installing the certificate will add it to the list of trusted certificates on your iPhone" in addition to your own custom prompt set up in the iPhone Configuration Utility. The missing additional text is your sign of trouble! - but how would know that before you saw it working once? In any case, if you force the big key certificate on the device, then when you open the Mail App, it opens up and then crashes immediately. Again, without a word. Supposedly Apple implemented this limit on the request of the US Government, read more here if you're interested: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/kamtec1/archive/2012/10/13/limitation-of-appl e-devices-iphone-ipad-etc-on-rsa-key-size-bit.aspx .
    IN CLOSING...
    With all this, you can read and send email from your iPhone.
    Don't forget to set all your other clients (Thunderbird, Claws, etc.) to also use STARTTLS instead of SSL, otherwise they won't be able to connect after the changes above.

  • Need to recreate artwork for imported video clips

    Anyone know how to make iTunes regenerate artwork for video clips it has imported?
    About three weeks ago I upgraded from 7.1.something to 7.3.2. Huge mistake. Huge. I have about about 5,000 video clips in iTunes and when the update had finished the artwork for about 98% of them was gone and the remaining ones were "misplaced," i.e., the artwork has nothing to do with the clip it's attached to. For every one of these clips the artwork had been generated when the clip was imported, now there's no artwork or the artwork is wrong and iTunes won't let me do the "set artwork to poster frame" routine - as if I would consider doing that for 5,000 clips. It's almost as if iTunes considers the new, "blank artwork" to be real, unmodifiable artwork except that it doesn't take up space in Cover Flow.
    Not only that but the images displayed in Cover Flow are tiny - one-third the size of audio album cover art - and there doesn't seem to be any way to enlarge them.
    What a mess. And only in video - no related problem in the music section.

    I'd recommend you grab After Effects for your special effects and if you have a lot of editing, also Premiere. Although you can do it all in After Effects, Premiere is a lot easier to edit with. The combination is used very frequently. All your assets from your other applications are usable to various extents in both of these applications.

  • BAM tab view report is very slow on inital display (1+ minutes)

    I have a BAM installation that has multiple different "dashboards" using tabbed report views to display separate metric values from one generic data object. These "dashboards" are being accessed directly through a web browser using the generated link for each report (and not through the BAM Active Viewer or Active Studio tools). Regardless of which of the "dashboards" I choose, the initial display takes a long time to complete. It takes about 20-40 seconds before the "opening..." message shows in the browser window, then another 20-30 seconds (depending on the complexity of the tabbed report and number of views) to complete the display. However, after this initial display, I can select other tabs on the current report or select a different report to display, and it will complete in 10-15 seconds. (Actually, every report display used to take over a minute, but setting the IIS - HTTP Headers - Content Expiration to "Expire after 365 days" allowed the succeeding report displays to improve. Now, it is just the initial display that takes too long).
    What is being done on the initial access of the BAM report that takes such a long time? I have seen a bunch of (temporary internet) files being loaded that, if I remove them, the response time is slow again for the next "dashboard" that I display. Is there any way to improve this response time?

    What kind of views are you using and what is the source of your data?
    Is there too much data in your BAM DOs?
    Have you created indices?

  • Rounding minutes to nearest five.

    Hi,
    I have tried the various methods suggested on other forum messages but to no avail.
    I have a GUI that acts as the client for a reminder system i am making for some coursework.
    It contains a combo box with values for the user to select a time from, however the time is not displayed in the format i would like it to be.
    I would like the current time from the instance of calendar i have created to be rounded to the nearest five up.

  • CEV business rule only uses first set of parameters in multiple inserts

    We have a cev rule that logs data for emails when a record is inserted in a table.
    Where there are two records inserted from a script, even where a qms_transaction_mgt.open_transaction and close transaction are used around each insert, the CEV record parameters do not change.
    By this I mean we have two records:

    2 - id: 23
    We pass the id to the CEV business rule and dbms_output the parameter value - it indicates that for both records the p_id = 22.
    The insert into the table indicates that the record ids were 22 and 23.
    This appears to have been reported several times but there is no solution.

    I would set it lower than 20 minutes as that is quite high before it sends the rules into the background, if the spawning at 10 minutes try setting it just lower than 10 as a test.
    It may also be worth looking into the apache timeout (if you are using the apache web server plugin) as that could also be playing a part.
    Cheers

  • XML as target file - how can i change its character set?

    Hi all,
    i need to create my target as XML-file und to save all my information there, but with other character set (not with default). In other words i must have in XML-file in header
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-15"?>.
    Now i have
    <?xml version="1.0"?>.
    What can i do?
    Thanks in advance.

    I don't think Finder does this (I've tried).
    iTunes does though. Where you can set artwork or the "poster frame"...
    This may not be what you want but if it helps, I know 2 ways  do this is
    Open the video in QuicktimePlayer7 | View | Set Poster Frame (even then, you might need to save it as .mov (ie in a 'mov container').
    Drag the file into iTunes and set the artwork (as in http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/adding-album-cover-art-or-images-in-itunes .html)
    From there, iTunes will use that frame as the "poster frame" ie the photo/frame that shows when you browse your videos. Which is what you want, but limited to iTunes.
    When I do either of these above, the frame I set does not show when exploring files in "Finder" (or in the other Explorer tool I use called "Pathfinder").
    So it maybe, that exactly what you want, is not possible.

  • Set classpath from java code

    Hi,
    Is it possible to set new classpath from java code? Something like System.setClasspath(String);
    Many thanks
    Miso

    You aren't the first one to wonder whether that would work, so don't call yourself stupid on that account.
    Not taking 15 minutes to set up and run a test to actually see if it works... well, if you really needed the answer, that would be different.
