30" Monitor - Economical Choices?

Hey everyone,
I'm looking for an economical 30" monitor for under $1000 and am having a tough time finding one. Can someone please point me to the right direction?
I'm working with AVCHD footage from a GH2 and export with H.264 for final output mainly for the web.
Thank you!

Found a couple others. Here's the short-list. Any thoughts?

  • Teranex Mini, the economical choice in front of FCP?

My friend, the search function, did not have anything bad to say about Teranex. One poster said it was the best. In search of more information, I have gone to a review in Videography, suggested by Teranex. The reviewer has consulted for Teranex. Despite these cautions I raise the proposition that the Teranex Mini could save me money. What do you think?
I have legacy VHS material, various stills including half-toned scanned stuff, and three cheap consumer camcorders, doing card, DVD and DV tape. I am reluctant to upgrade to an HD camera given their myriad of formats, the rapid change and their cost. It seems that the Teranex Mini might let me hang in with my "junk" until Red arrives and settles down to save the day. The top cost I have seen is $7,000 for a Mini ($3,000 minimum price). Patrick guessed he might spend $7,000 for his fully-featured Mac Pro, so I guess $7,000 for a Teranex Mini is not out of the ball park. I was yearning for a Mac Pro + but now it seems more economical to yearn for a Teranex Mini.
You might want to look at the full review, but I have included a couple of excerpts. I did not include the part about a time lag problem, but they say that FCP will let you offset and get Teranex in sync with FCP.
    The review excerpts follow:
"For the foreseeable future, video professionals
are going to live in a multiformat
    and multi-standard world.
Although you may be upgrading to
high definition, it’s unlikely that you
will be working with HD footage exclusively.
Most producers will have a continuing
    need to incorporate legacy
    standard-definition footage from past
    productions or stock image libraries.
    For this reason, high-quality format
    conversion equipment is an essential
    ingredient at facilities."
    and
    "most converters offer
little to improve the image or even to
keep it intact during scaling. If you are
    supplying HD programming that
includes a large amount of upconverted
SD material, a dedicated format converter
    could mean the difference
between a program that passes a QC
    check and one that doesn’t."

    Shane,
The message I got from your post may not be the one you intended, but it is a good message and I again thank you.
You wrote, "Or rent cameras and avoid buying like most productions do."
Being as I am trying to find a way to live with my junk cameras until RED or equivalent is available and stable, I translated your message as:
"Or rent Teranex Mini and avoid buying like most productions do."
The net says I can rent it for $275 per day plus insurance and shipping.
I will not need it for a while, so that leaves me time to learn how to use it and develop a good work flow to FCP, so that I can get Teranex in and out quickly.
Regarding other points you made, I will probably have VHS only this one time and I think I can frame it to the audience as real, live, authentic action footage from 13 years ago, so that they will put up with it.
As to the footage from my DV consumer cameras, it will not be perfect but Teranex says it will pass the quality check. The rental will reveal whether that is true.
And, about RED, if Graeme Nattress is on the development team, and I think he is, then I am willing to bet on RED. I do not think he would associate himself with anything that will not be a success. Of course, it might slip schedule a teeney, but I trying to prepare to wait it out happily with Teranex.
Again, I appreciate your posting last night.

  • Dual Monitor issue - Open file to 2nd monitor?

I have a dual monitor setup in Windows 7 and like to work with all the tool panels and PS main window on the left monitor and the photo open full screen on the right. I have tried saving the workspace with the image open full screen on the right monitor, but no matter what I try, everytime I open/re-open a file, it loads on the left monitor behind the tool panels. I then have to press F5 to mnimize some tool panels, then grab and drag the image window to the right screen. Then I have to press the F key to maximize the image window and F5 to restore the tool panels. This is my routine everytime I open a file. There has to be a better way! I have tried things like reseting to the default workspace, moving the PS window and tool panels to the right screen, but it seems the placement of a newly opened document must be hard-coded to open in the main PS window, no matter what the user has setup.

Yeah, this is annoying as hell.
In CS3, if you dragged an image to your second monitor all subsequent images would open up there. I'll leave my snarky, sarcastic comments about the wisdom of this new "feature" for another time. What might end up working you is putting the image on your monitor of choice (along with the app frame and the menu bar) and dragging the tool palettes to the other monitor. That's what I'm doing now and it's taking some getting used to but fortunately, once you drag over the tool box and the layer stack, everything else tool-related seems to open up there OK. The images stay on the other screen (for the most part).
All things considered, it still sucks... but when you only have one choice, the decision is easy to make.

  • How to use intel processor with a different monitor

I'd really like to buy a 24 inch imac but I'm concerned about the gloss screen and all the problems I've read about. I'm a professional photographer but can't afford a mac pro with cinima display. I really like the 20 inch 'white' monitor on my G4 iMac. Any thoughts on how to match an intel processor with a monitor of choice?

If you buy the iMac, just buy an external display of your choice and get a Mini-DVI to VGA or Mini-DVI to DVI adapter for your iMac and plug the display into the iMac. From there you can download 3rd party apps to shut off the iMacs screen and just use the matte external display as your main monitor.
I'd recommend getting a external display that uses DVI for your photography, much better quality image.

  • GT70 Monitor Color Profile (Chi Mei 173HGE)

In case some people one to fix color profile for their GT-70 Monitor (Chi Mei 173HGE)
Someone from different forum using same monitor had fixed that for us, and I like the 7500k version.
Just make sure you enable Use Windows display calibration in

    The link is :

  • Mac Windows share monitor?

I've got a G4 dual gig and want to share the monitor I'm currently using (using with the PC) with a Dell Dimension 2400 Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz processor with XP sp3. Both computers use integrated graphics.
The Mac can run 10.1, 10.3, or 10.5. I would rather not run 10.5 since it is like carrying 10 tons in a pickup truck. I'd like to use 10.3.
The monitor is an HP LP2475w and is connected to the PC with a DVI-I to VGA signal cable. There is another DVI-I port that could be used to connect a similar cable to the Mac. The Mac has a VGA and an Apple Display Port for monitor port choices. The monitor also has Display Port and HDMI ports.
Can anyone offer a suggestion, or point me to somewhere I might find the answer.

Hi Gary, likely your best bet an ADC to DVI adapter...

hi can anybody tell me what i'm doing wrong.. I don't understand threads that well. I'm writing ftp client that uploads user files to our ftp.server. My problem is ProgressMonitor hangs until ftp transfer is done before displaying message of the job status... I try to give it it's own thread. but it seems like the process for ftp upload takes higher priority so ProgressMonitor does not get attention til all ftp process is done...

First of all, please use the code tags when posting code, especially that much code. http://forum.java.sun.com/faq.jsp#messageformat
The problem is that you need to switch the threads, so you should spawn the ftp process in a new thread, and let the monitor run in the main thread (actually the UI thread). I don't think that's really documented anywhere. I had the same problem the first time.

  • Mini As Workstation?

Task: Image processing (retouching) of complex high res images w/Photoshop. Some 3D modeling/rendering. Running multple apps, Using Apple 30' cinema display.
Currently using an early 2011 MacBook Pro (15" Model 8,2) which simply isn't up to the task of running multiple apps on the 30" display. A loaded Mac Pro would handle the tasks smoothly, but I am reluctant to invest in a very expensive workstation based on 2010 hardware. My interim solution of the MacBook Pro has greatly slowed my workflow. I read good reviews about the Mini. Even the top CPU option doesn't seem to offer a huge advantage over my current MacBook (Intel Core i7 2Ghz 4 core). But I don't know how the Mini's graphics hardware (Intel HD 4000) would compare to the MacBook (AMD Radeon HD 6490M / Intel HD 3000).
Question: Would a fully loaded Mini offer more than a modest performance output to the 2011 MacBook? Is the Mini even compatible with 30" cinema display? (remains the monitor of choice within its lifespan)
The mini comes a a pricepoint that is workable as an interim solution until new Mac Pros arrive. The current Mac Pros and iMacs are priced beyond what I would want to invest as placeholders for the (long overdue) Mac Pro update.
Thanks for your informed opinions. Apologies for the wordy question.

Get yourself a 2010 Special, it comes $1819.
    Throw in W3680 yourself.
Throw in 4x8GB RAM, GTX 570 2.5GB and hard drives, scratch, SSD, PCIe SATA
They are still solid and excellent and don't have to worry about heat or return value, they hold value.
The Xeon Westmere hasn't been replaced. Would have req'd totally new motherboard if they were to do it right (SATA3, firmware, maybe some others) and Intel and Nvidia and lagging economy and more complex socket and firmware just were not there and not in time.
It could be early 2014 before you see where PC motherboards are - and SATA3 was rough launch there and on MacBook line.
Maybe sell the 2011 MBP for a 2012 tricked out instead. More RAM, large and better SATA3 SSDs for one, Thunderbolt external array for another. 2011 was not a good year in the end for MBP with 5 chipset revisions and trouble with SATA3 connector.

I don't know if the new iMac that just came out and isn't yet shipping is or is not doable.

  • BenQ XL2420T 120 HZ / 3D Ready - May I use this with my iMac?

    Hi.
My Philips 190B monitor that I have been using with my iMac in Extended Desktop mode recently died so I'm looking for a replacement second monitor.
I also own a PS3. Well, actually I own two.  One is sick at the moment.
I would like to replace the Philips with the new BenQ XL2420T monitor.  Use it with my iMac as I did with the Philips (possibly for gaming too) and use it with one, or both, of my PS3s for gaming and 3D Blue Ray movies via HDMI.  Thinking forward I am likely to get into 3D gaming too.
The BenQ has a 120Hz refresh rate and I wonder if the ATI Radeon HD2600 in my Mac can handle this? It's late 2007 vintage.
Or with the BenQ XL2420T monitor am I being too ambitious?
My Philips is currently connected to my iMac using DVI -D by means of an adapter.

Looks rather nice to be sure. It's got DVI-D so it ought to work with my iMac without a problem.  My current monitor is (was) connected this way by means of a small adapter.
BenQ say it has it has HDMI 1.4 so it can work with consoles.  Doesn't say 3D though, so I assume that is a 'no'. Strange that 3D should be omitted when all the consoles can handle this.
In fact I have just downloaded the extra info from BenQ ad the spec looks reallly impressive. I assume that D-Sub is what they call VGA now.  I need  VGA in case I ever bring my old PowerMac 6500/300 out of mothballs. Yes, the white Benq looks like a great second monitor for my iMac.  I'm virtually certain now that it doesn't have 3D but now I'm not so sure about the desirability of having that facility. I'm intrigued by what they say about the 'Reading Mode'.
Thanks for the heads up, lottathings1. Really given me something to think about.  LOL!

  • Redundancy for WLC2504

    Hello,
I want to build the WLC2504 redundant (fail-safe). A short downtime during the switch over is not a problem. There are 20 AP to the WLC.
What do I have to order? Another WLC2504 with 25 licenses or you can also AIR-CT2504-HA-K9 (Cisco 2500 Series Wireless Controller for High Availability) used and I need to buy licenses for these too?
Can someone answer me this, unfortunately I do not understand what is the correct and economical choice.
    Thanks and regards
    Alexander

For redundancy you have 2 choices. Get another WLC with license or the HA WLC. Both will work, but the HA WLC is cheaper because it's just used for N+1. With a licensed WLC, you can have half on one WLC and half on the other. So it depends how you want your redundancy. I like having licenses because of the fact that I can split the load between the two. This also allows me to know that the other WLC is function properly. Now if budget is a priority, then go with the HA WLC and setup that as N+1.

  • Conditional Validation using JSLink

I have a User field and a Choice field in a list.  When the Choice field has the option "A" selected I want the User field to be mandatory.  Validation formulas in lists cannot use User field data types so this is not an option.  Is
JSLink the way to go?  If so how would I implement conditional validation?  I can find examples of simple regex validation but nothing that helps to do conditional validation.
    Caroline

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to set the User field automatically when the Choice field select a value.
We can use jQuery to achieve it. Using jQuery .Change() method to monitor the choice, then set the value for the User field.

  • TimeCapsule won't back up automatically

Time Capsule has stopped backing up automatically. It says ON in the Time Machine preferences but it won't complete the back-up (error message says: Back-up disk space is not enough).
Using an iMac OS X 10.9.4 and a 2 TB wireless Time Capsule.

    You have some options:
    1) Manually delete some old backups, which will take a lot of time, and probably will not create much new space on the Time Capsule disk. Not recommended for most users.
    2) Add a USB drive to the Time Capsule and continue to back up to that destination.
    3) Add another new Time Capsule and back up that destination.
    4) Erase the existing Time Capsule drive and start over again with a new "master" backup and then move forward with new backups.
If you really don't need all the old backups from months....and maybe years back...option 4 is the quickest and most economical choice. It will only take a few minutes to erase the Time Capsule if you elect to go with that option.

    Hi davidc52720423,
To convert a PDF file to Excel format, you can use Adobe ExportPDF, Adobe PDF Pack, or Acrobat.
If converting to Excel is your only concern, then ExportPDF is the most economical choice.

    Hey guys,
Thanks for the link to PPBM5, I will definitely check it out!
Also for the 'memory chips' or DIMM size as they say in the industry, there are actually 16GB DDR3 ECC Registered modules out there.  The cheapest is the Hynix 16GB (DDR3 ECC Registered) at memorydepot.com for $500.  All the new server/workstation boards support it (well actually the memory controller embedded on the die of the AMD and Intel CPUI's support it).
The upcoming AMD Interlagos and Xeon E7-xxxx chips will support 32GB Modules (Samsung is the first to provide the actual chips to ODM's).
I think the main thing for me (keep in mind I have yet to check out the PPBM5 site yet, so my opinion may change after having checked it) is to get a motherboard that has the most expandability so that later on I can add more RAM.  Right now I really like the Asus KGPE board (this is an AMD Opteron Socket G34 chipset) as it has 16 DIMM slots with each of them supporting up to 16GB sized modules!
Yes I know that Windows 7 64-bit Profissional/Ultimate only supports up to 192GB, but again it is about future proofing as my current motherboard 'only' supports 16GB in total.
Also I like the AMD Opteron platform (Socket G34) because future AMD chips (at least for the next cycle of SKU's) will support the SAME motherboard without having to buy a new one unlike with Intel.
Althernatively there is the SUPERMICRO MBD-H8SGL-F-O motherboard which is also Socket G34 for AMD and is a SINGLE socket board with 8 x DIMMs with each DIMM supporting 16GB modules, this would be a good economical choice.  The board is also half the price of the Asus KGPE.
Intel however doesn't seem to have the same value offering, although yes they do perform better with Premiere Pro CS5 so it may be worth the price premium.
