30 times/day broadband disconnect

A couple of months ago I started to notice occasional dropouts. Just over a week ago they became much more frequent. I have a BT installed filter faceplate, but the dropouts are identical if I remove the faceplate an use a line filter into the master. I have only one socket in the house, and the router plugs into that (no extensions). When it is connected the speed is great, and the line is silent when I do the silent line check (though I've never managed to be doing that when it has dropped out). I have tried 2 different routers and cables, with no difference (which hasn't stopped BT sending me another one to try - with the expected same result). The 30 or so daily disconnections are spread randomly across the day and night. The disconnects cause the homehub3 to flash amber on the broadband, then reconnect, and the duration is from 45 to 90 seconds.
Is there a way to automatically monitor line quality so I can catch any random noise? The line test done by BT always succeeds, but then it is unlikely to ever co-incide with a dropout.
My understanding is that I may be wired directly to the exchange without a cabinet, since it is pretty close.
Any suggestions?
thanks.

Yes - I'm afraid it isn't a wireless issue (wish it was though), and it happens through the night which also rules out interference from most appliances in the house. I have DECT phones nearby, but the disconnections continue even with those removed completely (and batteries removed from handsets to be doubly sure).
Noticed today that the latency is now FAST, whereas it was INTERLEAVEDwhen I first started logging the disconnections last week. It is behaving exactly the same wither way, but odd that it would change for no reason.....does that happen automagically?
Don't suppose there is some sort of device I can plug into the phone socket for a night that will detect any anomalies or intermittent line noise etc..?

Same here, have had no problems with BT since joining at start of year. Since "Major Fault" they had last Friday ive had nothing but problems including ignorant staff on other side of the world telling me to reset my router and hanging up on me when ive been trying to get through to them for half an hour i kid u not, phone was picked up then was put down. Now they tell me its my hub at fault and will be sending out a new one in 2 or 3 days?!?! Isn't it obvious its still the same fault as last week?? A few friends r with BT (poor sods) and are having the same problem as me AAAARRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HELP HELP HELP!!!!! Not impressed.

  • Crackly phone line and broadband disconnecting

For a month or two i have been having problems with our phone line and broadband connection. The phone line is extremely noisy (interferance) and when you make a call or recieve a call the broadband disconnects. I have tried different filters, routers and wires but no good. I have conducted a quiet line test and the result was i could hear nothing on the line. When i unplug the hub and just have the phone connected to the socket the noise on the phone has gone and their is no problem, connecting the hub make the noise come back. As a result of all this my broadband speeds are very low.

    Go to Solution.

your drops in connection have at one point reconnected with a far lower speed than normal resulting in the low ip profile.  if you stay conencted 24/7 for 3/5 days the profile will correct itself for your current connection speed
I would as john46 suggested connected to test socket with a new filter and see if that helps

My time capsule keeps disconnecting intermittently. I have reverted to an earlier firmware version (7.6.1) but this has not solved the problem. Any suggestions?

    Disconnecting what?
    Wireless?
    Internet?
Local lan? Hard disk in the TC?
    Pray be specific.
When it is disconnected how do you fix it?
If the computer is plugged in by ethernet and wireless turned off, does the problem stop?
There is a bug .. well several really in the networking of Mountain Lion.. which seems to be worse with the TC.
It will lose access to the hard disk on regular basis. and it is just that .. a bug.. a reboot of the TC fixes it.
Did you use all very short names for TC.. wireless and disk name?
Is the issue with Time Machine? Or what and how are you using the computer that causes the problem.
Pondini has listed several solutions or work arounds for TM. See C section of his KB. on troubleshooting.

  • Time Capsule keeps disconnecting while trying to backup or copy files, can someone please help me?

I have a MacBook Pro, a Desktop PC running Windows 7 and a wifi router connected to the Broadband Internet. All devices share the same local network.
My Time Capsule (early 4th Generation) is connected via ethernet directly to the modem, I'm also able to connect wirelessly.
I also have an external seagate 3t drive connected to the time capsule.
For some strange reason, my Time Capsule keeps disconnecting form the Network after I try to access the data either in the tc or the hd, however the light is always green.
The problem mainly happens when copying data either from my Windows PC or my MacBook Pro: eventually, the connection between it and the Time Capsule is lost, interrupting the copy. It keeps happening every time, after a while, and only gets fixed rebooting Windows and the Time Capsule. I can't copy my PC data.
I've tried soft and hard reset, the time capsule it's discoverable again and able to connect either via ethernet or wirelessly, however if I try to copy something to it or do a backup, it immedialty disconnects itself.
Can someone please try to help me solve this issue?
    Thanks

Wow! Thanks so much for such a prompt reply and for trying to help me, I really do appreciate it.
Your reply is so detailed because, unlike me, you are an expert, so I’ll try to answer the questions you are asking, however I’m not that good at computers so please be patient and excuse me.
    1. Network layout.
What is the wifi router you have??
Answer: I’m connected to the internet through my ISP (centurylink formely Qwest) modem, ZyXel Q1000Z, I went to my modem page and copied this for you, it hope it helpsModem Status

I presume this is modem as well.. please give all the details of the modem router .. make and model and what role it has in the network.. ie main router or bridged. If wireless is running what you do with it. Are devices connected to the modem router and so some devices are connected only indirectly to the TC?
    Answer:
Make and model listed above, not sure about the bridge thing but in the image above it says something about encapsulation, does that help? If the wireless is running, (I assume you are talking about TC) I usually backup my MBP and my Windows PC, I also have a Seagate 3T Connected to the TC and I save music, photos and files on it to share within my network. Yes there are tons of devices connected to the modem, eg. Mac, MBP, MAir, Ipads, AppleTVs, iphones, printers, etc. Although when I first set-up time capsule (about 1 ½ years ago) I created a wireless network connection, Nobody ever connects to that network to access the internet, the only person that connects to the TC is me and that will be either through my MBP or my pc.
I think I should mention that my ISP modem is connected to my PC through and Ethernet cable, although I connect wirelessly to it and my TC is also using an Ethernet cable to connect to the modem, however I sometimes connect to TC wirelessly. Not sure if you needed to know that be just in case.
What setup and role does the TC have.. ie is it router or in bridge. If the main modem is also router than the TC must be bridged.
    Answer: Not sure??
What firmware is the TC running?
    Answer: 7.6.4
Has this been stable in the past and now has failed.. or was it always bad?
Answer: Yes!, it used to be stable before, I really never had issues, this has happened since last November I think.
    2. Initial changes to get the ball rolling.
Let me strongly recommend you do these thing...
    Comment:
I’m about to do your recommendations after I finish typing this, however I thought I should mention that while on Windows 7, I am only able to see the TC on Airport Utility as soon as I unplug the TC and plug it back in, other than that TC doesn't show up on it, I am only able to see the TC through Windows Explorer/Network. Also sometimes while I’m doing something else, like being on the net, I notice the HD connected to the TC seems to be reading something
All SMB compatible names.. that is for windows to work properly.. so short.. 2-10 is plenty of characters.. but make 20 the limit, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. (This is narrow, but easy to remember).
    Comment:
When doing the factory reset do I need to this SMB thing? I’m a bit confused here, you are talking about me doing manually, so I can type something like this right?
    Good TC name. TCGen4
    Good 2.4ghz wireless name. TC24ghz
    Good 5ghz wireless name TC5ghz
Exactly what format is the USB drive? Is it partitioned GUID and formatted HFS+ on the Mac?? this is the only way really.
Answer: The Hard Drive connected to the TC is a Seagate 3t, I did do a partition GUID and half of it is to be used in my mac and the other in pc, I had no issues in the past with these partitions, I was able to save files from my MBP to the HD and from my PC to the HD, and then later able to see either files on both my mac or pc.
I use my TimeMachine to Backup on the TC and it backs up both the TC and the HD connect it to it, I then have another HD connected to my MBP and do another backup there, I have lost information in the past and that’s is why I do so many backups.
I also wanted to mention that most of the time the TC disappears from the network is when I try to copy something to it.
I'm also enclosing a couple of photos of my windows airport utility, I am not sure if they will help you know something, I deleted my name and Ip address.
    Thanks again LaPastenague

  • Broadband disconnects

We've started getting an intermittently-noisy phone line and frequent broadband disconnects (Infinity FTTC - inner city but the cab is about 1km away), but obviously the automated test always says "we cannot detect a problem with this line".
Sod's law says that it would all be working during an engineer visit, thus costing £130 for no result - just curious, is there basically nothing we can do?

When our broadband was installed, the engineer was getting 25Mbit/10Mbit. By the time a week had passed, we were down to 18Mbit/8Mbit. It's been dropping down slowly - last time I checked we were down to 10Mbit/3Mbit.
    Today:
    Wholesale speed test:
    1. Best Effort Test: Download Speed : 1.91 Mbps
    2. Upstream Test: Upload Speed : 0.96 Mbps
Your speed test has completed and the results are shown above, however during the test an error occurred while trying to retrieve additional details regarding your service. As a result we are unable to determine if the speed you received during the test is acceptable for your service. Please re-run the test if you require this additional information.
    bt.com speed troubleshooter:
Fibre broadband speed into your home: Good
    Download speed 2.46Mb
    Upload speed 0.76Mb
I know the "fibre broadband speed" is the line sync rate - I assume this doesn't take into account a high error rate? I suspect our line is just incredibly poor quality - when it works it'll sync fine but the errors mean it's almost unusable.
Is there anything else I can check and if so, how? If it's in our house, I'm happy to accept dealing with it, but I really think it's down to a poor line....

Is this to run periodically ?
During the request submission, click schedule, choose the specific days, and click on S = Sunday.
Change the start date on the date of the sunday you want to run, eg : 15-JUL-07 14:00:00, change the end date as well.

    Greetings,
Thru out the afternoon, I have been playing hide-and-go seek in Goggle and Apple Discussions. I am searching for an Apple "Day-Timer" "Day Runner" "Day Planner" type product. I use iCal and Address Book ... they don't offer the variety of features on several PC planners.
It would be wonderful to find an Apple application which I can use on my MacBook (#1 priority) and iTouch. Hope it is out there & someone can point me in the right direction.

What are those features? If you don't tell us, we can't give appropriate recommendations. (Especially since I'm not sure what a "day timer" and "day runner" are.) If iCal does not fit the bill, you will have to look to a third-party, as iCal is Apple's only entry in the calendar market.

  • FaceTime is not working since the last time I've disconnected it...

Since the last time I've disconnected it, Facetime is not working. At first, I thought it was working with no problems. Then, I realize that I could not make or receive calls, and then I disconnected. Now, I can't connect it. There's a message saying to me try later, but this message has been appearing since last month. I'm sure that this problem is not with my internet conection, because I've tried another conections, and FaceTime still not working, and it is not with my ID Apple either because I could connect it normally in iPod' Facetime and I've tried other account in Mac' FaceTime. What should I do?
    Thank you.

  • Time Capsule WiFi disconnects when a Fujitsu Siemen Laptop with b/g network

Time Capsule WiFi disconnects when a Windows Vista based Laptop with "b/g" network connects. When i use Macbook with "n" Network.
Surprising that TC and MacBook both from Apple can't stay connected when Fujitsu Siemens Laptop joins through WiFi.
I use a DSL Modem (Speed 1 Mbps) connected thru ethernet to Time Capsule on Bridge Mode.

Yes, n is better, but if you have it running on b/g/n (since you have to with your b/g only notebooks) the n is inactive. Kind of a waste. Others have resorted to adding another wireless router which one set to b/g/n and the other n-only.

  • Am I the only one who charges the Pre 2 times/day?!

I just bought a Pre (last weekend) and I am terrified to see that it must be charged 2 times/day. Is it normal or is it my pre? Also the speed of the device isn't exactly what I was expecting...

The battery life isn't great, which is why I bought a dock at home and at work, and keep it there when I'm not running around.  However, my phone will definitely run all day UNLESS I am on the web a lot.  If I'm on the web all day, I get maybe 8-10 hours.
To get better battery life on it, I did the following:
    Made the screen less bright
Turned off bluetooth and wifi and gps unless I'm using it.  I'd leave the bluetooth on if I drove more than I do (my car links and I love that feature).  If you turn gps off, any application that needs it will just ask if it can turn it on for you.  Easy.
It's not the phone that kills my battery, it's downloading pictures from the internet.
If you're tethering and using the phone as a hotspot (I don't), it sucks out the battery.  Charge simultaneously with the cable.  It just takes a lot of power.
I love the phone, but the battery is definitely the weak spot.

My iPad WiFi Almost Every Day Keeps Disconnecting, especially if I am watching a video online. How do I fix this?

    Howdy Danny_98,
Here is a great article to help troubleshoot wifi connectivity with your iOS device. Named iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections it can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398.
Be sure that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again. If unable to do so, see this article.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and indicate that they are connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or ISP for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you are connected. Then tap > and Forget this Network. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network again.
Note: You will need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your desired network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and then on again2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2.For AirPort Base Stations, see this article for information about firmware updates.
Those are the basic troubleshooting steps and there is another section toward the bottom named Wi-Fi disconnects, or signal strength is less than expected that is very relevant as well.
    Regards,
    Sterling
