30" uneven brightness, shows as a dark band

Hi everyone,
I had a perfect 30" Cinema Display. Lately it started to show a dark horizontal band which starts at the middle left and extends to nearly 75% of the display's width. It's clearly the backlight which is causing this and after a while of use it normally gets a little brighter and therefore less noticable. This behaviour started only a few days ago and before that the backlight was relatively even.
Since it's only a few months old, it's still under warranty, but I know that the whole display will get exchanged for another (often not really "new") one. Mine has not a single dead or stuck pixel and I fear that if I take it to an Apple Dealer to get it exchanged, I might get one with even backlight but maybe dead pixels.
Is there any way to make sure to only get a replacement which has no dead pixels? Mine has none and I do not want to get a replacement that's not as good just because of my backlight issue...
Any help or ideas are appreciated!
Thanks
Björn
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   30" ACD

I have exactly this same problem.
I purchased ACD 30" from Apple.com (online) early December 2005. Only one dead pixel and backlighting was very even and no dancing green pixels. I use it with a PC (using the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition).
Then, suddenly about a week ago, a dark area developed. It starts on the left of the screen, is about 3 inches tall, and then extends to the right a little over half the screen, gradually tapering off.
It's a fuzzy, darkish area, ie not with hard boundaries, but very noticeable (most of my windows have white backgrounds). It just looks like the area is dirty (yes I've tried washing it!).
The area starts quite dark and then gets somewhat lighter the longer the display is on, but never goes away, not even close.
I run the display at minimum brightness (I work in the dark!), but even when I turn it up to max brightness, the area gets brighter, but is still dimmer than the rest of the display (which is otherwise very even).
Is this just that the backlight has a certain area that's dim or partially burned out? Are there multiple backlights on this display? Or a single one (w/ spreaders) running along the left edge maybe?

  • Dark bands or 'spotlights' on bottom of Macbook (early 2009) screen?

I have had my 13" Macbook since 2009. It's never given me an issue but yesterday I opened up my computer from sleep mode and there were dark bands across the bottom in between what looked like small spotlights beaming towards the top of the screen (this does not show up in screenshots). Ever since, when I wake my computer up from sleep or turn it on the spotlights reappear for about 5-10 seconds before the screen lights up like normally. Also just discovered that when I go to the lowest screen brightness setting (which should appear black), the screen goes into strobe mode, with the 'spotlights' showing up at the bottom. I could live with this, but I'm pretty sure it's just going to get worse.
If it's any help, my battery seems to be charging very slowly.
    I have OS X 10.5.8

I have a similar problem since the last update 10,5,7.
Always when I connect my iPod80GB the computer hangs, the problem only exist when running Mac OS X. It won't happen while running windows.
The same problem when I connect an external hard drive the computer hangs aswell (Mac OS X) (not in windows).
My personal feeling is that there are serious bugs in the last program update.

  • Uneven brightness in my macbook

I have a macbook with uneven brightness display. Strangely, the right quarter of the display is not as bright as the right. The unevenness is noticeable and I cannot bear it after a relative long time of work before it. I have tried with different brightness setting, no work.
I don't know how to solve this problem.
Two weeks ago, I have call the local apple service, they refused to replace the display for me. How can I solve this problem ?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Macbook/MA254

Sorry... it resolved my uneven brightness problem. I was hoping it would do the same for you. Mine was actually dim in both lower corners but it is now perfect after doing the advanced calibrate.
Can you take it to an Apple store so you can "show" someone the problem? If not, I can see how this is going to be tough to get repaired over the phone.
Sorry, I hope someone else chimes in here with a suggestion.

  • HT1430 My new iPAD3 has uneven brightness on screen. Left half is brighter than right half. Any suggestions how to fix it?

My new iPAD has uneven brightness on screen. Left half is much brighter than right half. Any suggetions to fix it or shall I go for warranty replacement?

If restarting or rebooting doesn't resolve the issue and the device is new, I would contact Apple or wherever you bought the iPad, show it to them and if they can't figure out, ask for a replacement.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare display has developed a dark band at the edges of the screen approximately the same width as the aluminum surround. This wasn't present when the MBP was new. Am near an Apple Store, but anyone else had this problem

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" non-glare display has developed a dark band at the edges of the screen approximately the same width as the aluminum surround. This wasn't present when the MBP was new. I'm near an Apple Store and can take the laptop in, but has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for your input. I didn't completely flesh out what I'm seeing visually. The resolution settings are all correct for my screen. The problem is if, say, looking at the gray startup screens or a completely white full-screen image, there is a perimeter of graying, almost as if the LEDs are somehow not as bright as the rest. It's also curious that the thickness of this phenomenon is almost exactly the same as the metal bezel around the display. I will be taking it to an Apple Store for a look, as I'm also having several minor hardware problems that need to be addressed and remedied.

  • Get rid of intrusive HUGE and UGLY dark bands behind HUGE icons on Home Screen

How do I get rid of the intrusive, huge and ugly dark bands behind the huge icons, and reduce the size of the icons on the Home Screen?
On my 8320 I can use pictures of my kids for wallpaper. On the 8900 they have wasted half of the beautiful screen with these huge ugly icons and dark bands - cuts right through two of my kids eyes and two of my kids mouths and below.
What were they thinking? They advertise the 8900 (and the 8520) by emphasizing a full screen picture - but when you actulally buy the phones, they have inserted these cursed screenscape hogs. Any firmware fixes yet? Or, now that Nokia has released their E71 that not only handles email as well as my BB, but also allows me to create and edit docx, should I abandon the 8900 as a lost cause and buy the E71? And, as long as we are discussing RIM's myopic short sightedness, why no 3G on this device?
Please hurry, my buyers remorse clock is ticking and I need to send this thing back to the carrier if it can't be fixed.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello, to change the size (I have six icons per row not five) go to options>advanced options>accessability and change the amount on the grid. Default 6x6, then 4x4 3x3 etc., you can also change the colours. Hope I`m not barking up the wrong tree but have bbn of help! Regards Kew

  • Getting iTunes music to show up in Garage Band

I have been using garage band to make pod casts for my running training program; however, only some of my music in iTunes will show up in garage band to be used for the podcast.
Does anyone know how to get the rest of the iTunes music to show up?
    Thank you!

Thanks Robert. To drag and drop, do you literally mean have iTunes open and garageband open and select music from iTunes and drag it over?
I have only been using the Media browser, and it only contains some of my music from iTunes.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Uneven brightness

I am using an image for floor in a 3D model. In the render you can see the repeating pattern of uneven brightness from 1 side to the other. Is there a technique that will even out the brightness across the image left to right or up and down. Thanks.

    figured it out.
copy the image on top of itself.
add a adj layer - brightness
    lower the brightness
add a gradient to a layer mask that revels only the right half.
    viola.

  • 15" C2D uneven brightness

    So...
I've had the MBP since Monday and I've been noticing that there is some uneven brightness on the screen. There are two areas specifically: Right side (about 1cm along the edge) and bottom (about 2cm tall, about 4cm above the edge.) Both of these tend to fix themselves if I contort my viewing position, but at a normal viewing position (i.e. what I used with the old powerbook, I see the variations.)
Anyone else see something like this?

  • Dark band down the right edge of screen ? (17" MBP)

I'm afraid I'm being nitpicky after seeing all those other serious problems, but I'm curious. Let me know if I'm being a nit picker.
On my new 17" MBP (early 2009) with the glossy panel, there is a band of dark area (about 1 inch wide) down the right edge of the screen. It's more noticeable because it then gets brighter 1/4 inch from the edge. It's not that bad... and I doubt that it'd show up in a picture if I were to take one. But it's plainly noticeable when I set the desktop to a solid color.
Is that to be expected? Do you also notice it? I was hoping that uniformity would be better with LED backlighting. Or is this a uniformity issue?

    hello,
no i don't think that is being too picky. sounds like a display defect, and it could get worse over time. i think you should take it back.
    regards,

  • Line on the screen of my ipod touch 4th gen. Starts left of the screen as a blue (bright backgr) or red (dark backgr) line becoming white halfway and going across screen. Any ideas/solutions?

I have an irritating line on the screen of my 4th gen ipod touch going left to right. It starts out as a blue line (with bright backgroung) or red line (with dark background). Switching backrounds will also switch the color of the line. Sometimes it stops halfway the screen. Sometimes the blue/red line becomes white somewhere halfway the screen and continuing as a white line to the other side of the screen. It mostly starts out as a normal screen and when using the blue/red line appears and when using some more the white part appears.Mostly in the beginning the line starts flickering and becomes more steady after a while.
I have searched on the internet but can only find info on some pixels acting weird (stuck/frozen/dead pixels). This is a whole line of pixels not doing what they are supposed to do.
Anyone an idea what this could be and how to solve it?
    Thanks,

Did you ever fix this? My daughters is the same. Treated with tender loving care, we reset to factory and it disappeared but was back again after 2 or 3 days. Still in warranty so going to take to the genius bar, however a bit concerned that because it belongs to an 11 year old they are going to assume she's damaged it.

  • Uneven brightness + washed out colours

I got a new iBook G4 12in a week ago. Love everything about it apart from the screen. As soon as I booted it for the first time I noticed the screen wasn't particularly bright and that the colours were washed out. It's usable but not of a level I'd expect from Apple. It's bad even under standard office fluorescent lighting.
A colleague with an identical iBook noticed my screen was a bit dim and said he usually runs his iBook at a low brightness level (two notches off bottom). If I did that on mine, I'd struggle to see anything! It has to be run at full or just below full brightness to be usable.
I've also noticed that the bottom of the screen is brighter than the top. This took me a week to notice so isn't a huge problem. At the bottom corners there are very light streaks - it's a bit like the screen is being run from two halogen spotlights placed underneath the plastic surround!
Should I phone Apple's support and get this fixed, or is it to be expected? Research online shows half the people have a similar problem with washed out colours, while half claim their screens are bright and vibrant.

I called AppleCare last night. First, the guy asked me to do a couple of adjustments. He suspected that the display was damp. So he asked me to turn off the system, take out the battery, and then discharge the whole machine completely by pressing Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and the power button at the same time. But this trick didn't solve the problem. Second, he asked me to put the installer cd in and adjust something. It didn't work either. After this, he got me a system engineer on the phone, and he said there were two options: I could either send it in for repair, which would be quicker, or exchange it for a new unit, which would be slower, about 10-12 days. So I decided to exchange it for a new one. They are sending me the packing labels. Then I will send this one back. They will send a new one to me.
I suspect that displays with such problems are recycled ones. I mean they are taken from junk ones with an okay display. I hope this is not true. The display on my three-year-old Compaq still looks better than this one.
Apart from this small defect, my new computer works really well, and I love it. I am just a little disappointed with the product quality of Apple computers. It seems that they have put a lot of effort in the design of the appearance of their computers. But there is some degree of negligience on other aspects of their computers. That's why this forum is full of complaints.
Personally I think it is better to buy a computer directly in a store. It is easier to return or get a new one.
