3000 N100 battery problem..

Yes.. its the same problem as described here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-69671
Even so I have "only" been having this problem for about 4 months, so even if I had responded immediately I would have been too late for the above support solution which ended OCT 2008!
In the summer of 2008, my Lenovo 3000 N100 (bought in April 2007) came back from service with a new battery (the old one had died too!). The battery has FRU part no. 92P1186, so is exactly one of the faulty batteries.
My question is: is it reasonable, that I got this battery as a replacement from an official lenovo service center in JULY 2008 WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS FULLY KNOWN??
I think not. Whether they were not reading the bulletins, or trying alternative ways of "recycling" the battery, it is their mistake, and I got a battery that was, if not without value, then practically unsellable.
Am I out of luck?
Kim Borch

I have just been searching Google about a fault I have found with my laptop and came across this site, thankfully...
I bought the N100 just over a year ago, about 8 months into having the laptop I found that the battery seemed to just stop charging. So I took it upon myself just to buy a band new Lenovo Battery as I need the laptop for my university course. Just recently this new battery that I have bought has done exactly the same thing and it’s a little annoying.
After reading what people other people have posted on here I thought I would sign up and see if anyone can help me resolve this problem now that I have had two n100 batteries to exactly the same thing to me.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ben
P.S. the only reason i have created a new post is the ones relating to my problem seem to be locked.

  • How to calibrate 3000 n100 battery?

Does anyone know the process to calibrate the battery on a 3000 n100? My battery jumps to 0% and beeps but i am still able to run the computer for a while. Those beeps drive me crazy.

    Hi there...
I am a retired IBM/Lenovo engineer specialising in the C-series and dead batteries are not unusual! Let's get some things straight first?
    1) We built most of the Lenovo/ThinkPad series to take specific batteries designed and built for our systems. They have special added function that handshakes with the microcode, BIOS and software to give a wide range of battery information and control.
    2) They used to be very expensive (>£60) but lately there are a lot of genuine ones at much lower prices. I bought two on eBay for just £20 only 6 weeks ago?
    3) You have every right to use a competitive/alternate battery but no-one in IBM or Lenovo can or will comment on whether they are suitable, will work correctly or will last very long.
    4) I CAN say that I have 'tested' several 'alternative' batteries and not a single one worked as I would have hoped! I will say no more since there are many I did not test?
    5) I am not sure what the concept of 'conditioning a battery is'? A battery is an object that holds a charge. Over time its ability to hold a charge reduces to some minimum close to zero? Some batteries 'die' much more quickly than others. Other last much longer of course.
    6) Many die because they have been discharged for a considerable time or they have been shorted out in some way and done an irreparable damage?
    7) If you have one that ONLY displays 'zero' this is can be because a) It is as dead as the John Cleese and Michael Palin parrot!! b) It has no function that the PC microcode/BIOS can measure c) There is a fault in the PC base code and it can no longer measure the battery.
    8) Let us be 'Nerd Sherlock' for a while? My suggestions are a) Try the battery in another C100 that you KNOW shows good charge? b) Borrow a battery from another C100? c) Buy a new battery and know that this is good! (Make sure it IS NEW! I reported a seller to eBay that sold C100 batteries as 'new' and were clearly 'used'. You can usually tell an old one because it does not come in the original box and the gold contacts show signs of wear. Even installing the battery a single time causes marks on the contacts?)
    9) Finally.... Ensure the battery is genuine! On the rear it will have the Lenovo logo top-left, the turquoise Li-ion label bottom-right and a 22-digit barcode? The ASM should be 92P1179 with a FRU of 92P1180. I have never found a non-Lenovo battery with the turquoise label?
    10) Best suggestion? Dump your current one and buy a new Lenovo one? You will be surprised at how much additional info you get once you install the Lenovo Power Management Driver from http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/60pm07ww.exe
    Good luck?

i use a 3000 N100 0768-B9G notebook with win Xp for a year and for some reason i had to format the Hard drive yesterday. i reinstalled my Win Xp and visited the site and downloades the audio drivers for the sound but nothing happend there was no device. then i downloaded the system update programm. it downloades all of the drivers including one for audio (different from the one from the lenovo site) and this time i had a audio device (not the old one though) my speakers were off and when i pluged external speakers to the speakers in the sound was horrible...what can i do?

  • 3000 n100 battery freeze

My Lenovo battery missed the recall as it was only posted on the Lenovo website and not sent to me by the Lenovo messaging system.  The original battery has now failed completely.  I have purchased a non-lenovo 9 cell replacement.  The battery charges and runs the laptop perfectly, but the machine will not start up on the battery with Vista Business.  It freezes at the "horizontal bars" display.  Attempting to start in safe mode stops at the CRCDISK.SYS install. Can anyone offer advice please?

When I had the no charging problem on mine, resetting bios battery fixed it.
If you have already tried that, there may be some other hardware problem.
I am using a aftermarket battery, works fine. I also have a "genuine" replacement

  • N100 Battery won't charge!

    Hello Mark,
My N100 battery refuses to charge. My warranty curse has done it's job perfect. Things die down on me as soon as the warranty period expires. I initially thought that since i didn't use the machine for 3 days continuosly, probably the battery might have been over discharged. Followed the lenovo advice to switch off the machine and leave it on charge for 24 Hrs; but no results. Tried reconditioning etc.   Can u please help.

  • Lenovo 3000 N100 0768 DKU Battery problem

Lenovo 3000 N100 0768 DKU Laptop has battery issues. The battery shows 75% & total battery power remaining @ 76%.
The battery charge does not change when connected to the system with the AC adapter. The system will only function with the AC adapter attached. The system will not function on battery alone.
Is there some type of battery re-calibration available?   My husband checked the battery with a meter that shows that it still does have power.  The battery is a Sony LION; the original one purchased with the computer.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions offered!

  • Two big problems that have effectively made my Lenovo 3000 N100 an expensive paperweight.

Okay, I have two problems with my laptop, which I know are unrelated:
    1. My laptop's battery died about a month ago. It will not hold a charge, and unplugging the system will immediately shut off the system. This is identical to symptoms as per the battery issue attached to the top of the forum. However, this battery issue occured after even the extended warranty expired.
    2. My laptop will now spontaneously, inexplicably shut down between 3 - 5 minutes after turning it on. It acts as if the system was suddenly unplugged.
Between these two issues, this has effectively crippled my laptop. The first issue limits it to the power outlet. The second makes it completely unusable. The system runs normally until it spontaneously shuts down. Because of the time it takes until it shuts down, I doubt I can use Lenovo's warranty check tool online. Because of this, I can't even get the serial number (as the warranty sticker is worn down to the point of illegibility.
First question: What can be done to repair it?
Second question: Is it under warranty? It is a Lenovo 3000 N100.
Please let me know ASAP. This is a very problematic issue for me, and I'm really unhappy that a less-than-two year old system has died, and I hope that this can be resolved.

  • LENOVO 3000 N100 "lock-up", "stall" problem

My laptop will start, but stall/freeze at any step after pushing the on buttom. It stalled at "window is starting up", "login in screen", afetr login, during loading the start-up programs or few minutes after running any propgram like Internet Explorer or spybot. When it stalled, the mouse is still able to move arond, but nothing happen if you click an icon. If clicking too many times, it beep two times and the mouse stalled. After a lot of try-and-errors, I think I find out the cause (with 80% confidence). Somehow, I.E. is causing lock-up. I have I.E. 7.0 and Window XP. What shoud I do to fix the problem? I tried to remove I.E. 7.0 from my laptop and re-installed back. It didn't work. Then, I tried to install I.E. 6.0. The set-up says it detected a new version of I.E. installed on my laptop and won't install I.E. 6.0 even I.E. 7.0 is already removed. Thanks for the help.

  • Problem with 3000 N100 chargin and powering on...

For about a week now my Lenovo 3000 N100 has been having a problem powering on and charging. When it first happen I didn't notice the problem because I had a full battery, and didn't notice it wasn't charging. It wasn't until all the juice in the battery ran out that I realize this thing is messed up.
I tried swapping batteries... nothing. It won't charge either of them.
I tried changing power supplies... nothing. Still won't charge.
I can't even turn it on without a battery in it, as it will not run on AC power alone.
I know there's power getting to it because when I have a battery in plus the AC adapter, the little organge battery light on the front will blink. It blinks off and on at roughly one second intervals. When I power it on with whatever juice is left in the battery and then it dies, the battery light blinks really fast for a couple seconds and then goes back to blinking in one second intervals... not sure what this means.
I've read some stuff on here about resetting the CMOS battery. I already tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the power button down for 35 seconds to drain whats left in the capacitors... no go.
I even took it apart and tried to short out the CMOS battery. I think it worked because I turned it back on and when I did the BIOS told me it was reset and set everything back to fatory defaults... but then it died again.
I'm at a loss here. I got this laptop for free so I'm not afraid to just throw it away, I just don't have another one to replace it.
    Any input would be appreciated.

    pikkili,
    Welcome to the forum.
I suggest you read through some of the symptoms described by other Lenovo 3000 N100 owners here on some of the battery discussion threads to compare your symptoms.   It sounds to be like your battery has failed.  While the system can run without the battery some other users have noted that the operation may be a bit erractic, and that once the battery is replaced that the problem is solved.
At the top of the Lenovo 3000 board, you should find the annoucement and link to a tip, the tip is also linked to from the battery discussions as well.  This service tip extends the battery warranty by 6 months  for those affected by a particular battery issue (which it sounds like you have by the 70% charge status without the battery providing any power).    It sounds like if your system is 1.5 years old you might be near the end of this window, so best to check it out the tip and contact service soon to see if you apply.
If you are outside the window, I would recommend that you replace the battery first before spending money on diagnostics or a planar replacement.

  • TV AC & PD Problems on 3000 N100 w/ Vista HP

I noticed there was LOTS more disk activity recently, particularly at startup.  There was never a 'freeze', but the response was definately sluggish.  Looking up what was happening with the Windows Resource Monitor it reported most of the activity was to pagefile.sys, the 'swapfile'.  Interesting...
Just bought a Brand 'G' laptop w/ Vista on it and it showed none of the problems...  Uh oh.  Time to investigage more.
Noting that some of the latest updates and patches were causing problems on Vista (it's been out over a year now?), that was the first place to start.  Uninstalling the software bit by bit, I think I may have found something interesting.
When TV Access Connections 5.02 is loaded the massive pagefile.sys actiivity happens.  With just the prerequisites, no problems.  I've seen this to varying degrees for quite awhile, so it's probably <?> not a 5.02 problem exclusively.  Also noted that when the Presentation Director is reinstalled, the same problem occurs.  The extended boot up time is significantly impacted.
Is there an underlying driver that needs a Vista SP1 update so the top level apps don't crater the machine's performance?  At the time all drivers where up to date according to the TV SU tool.
BTW, run all this on Win  XP Pro SP3 on a T61p, and it all seems to run perfectly.  Just on the Vista machine does it act out.
If there's a solution, other than keeping it nuked off my system, I'd be glad to hear it.  Otherwise consider it a 'bug report'.
    TIA..

    Hello,
Vista is a bit different in using ram, google: superfetch.
In the beginning, Vista performs a lot of tasks, like doing automatic restore points, defragmentation, superfetch learns about
your behavoir and is loading the demanded programs in ram.
You can disable them, look for tweaking vista in google, there a lot of suggestions.
Another simply suggestion is, to leave Vista alone one or two nights to get ready to use.
Then Vista will serve a good user experience and you would´t go back to XP, a lot of users said.
Also I would suggest not to update your Thinkvantage programs, when it isn´t necessary.

can anyone help me please? i'm sick and tierd of vista...

    Hello
I have the **EXACT** same 3000 N100 that you have..... I also had Vista pre-installed and disliked it intensely. I spent several days working on downgrading to XP and figured out a very easy way of doing it. I created a step-by-step instruction sheet. Locate the following on this forum.... "I Explain How To Downgrade From Vista To XP On A 3000 N100 Laptop"
Hope this helps you if you have not already downgraded.

  • 3000 N100 - contacting Lenovo re laptop problems

My 3000 N100 is a nightmare - 7 months after I bought it, it could no longer be used as the graphics chip was damaged and the screen flickered so much that it was unusable. As the machine was still under the 1 year warranty Lenovo repaired it but the same issue has arisen again, and I understand that the extended warranty as a result of the repair was only 3 months.  The cost of this repair means that I am left with an almost worthless laptop after only 18 months, that has already gone through 2 graphic chips (I think this is the problem anyway but I'm a bit of a tecnophobe..).
One of my work colleagues told me that companies have a duty to repair or replace items that go wrong before the end of a 'reasonable' service life under the Sale of Goods Act. So I'm hoping that Lenovo would agree that 18 months is not a reasonable service life for their laptops, particularly when it has malfunctioned twice in that time, and would consider a repair, but how do I contact them? There seems to be no contact address on their website and I also can't find any telephone numbers except for Lenovo. Anyone help??

Take it to an especialized repair laboratory and do that BGA rework (reclaim for warranty over that work). Another option is changing the whole motherboard.
You can't do anything yourself because you don't have knowledge and tools.
    Best regards.

  • N100 Standby Problem

    3000 N100 0768 XP
Everytime i go into Stand By i cannot get out of it. The computer goes into Standy By okay however the "moon" standy by light does not come on any more. Then when i try and start the computer again it sounds like it is going to start again (some lights flash and the disk drive starts) but the screen doesnt turn on.  I have to then hold the power button to turn it off and start again.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Also my battery light seems to be broken, the battery still works (well i had the N100 problem and this is my second battery) but the battery light on the front of the computer only comes on when i dont have the AC power on. It does flash red when i connected to AC but then it turns off, my battery is not flat when it does this - it does it everytime. Dont know if that has anything to do with it.

Leads me to think that some hotfix or whatever at the OS is the reason for this....
