30fps Converted to 25fps. New Duration 20% Longer But Audio Sounds OK???

Could be a Compressor or FCP question!
I have some 1280x720p M-JPEG footage recorded at 30fps from a still camera and unfortunately I live in PAL country.
So I made 2 ProRes presets in Compressor to "alter" the footage to 25fps. The Frame Control settings are shown below.
Note the "Rate Conversion" details at the bottom of each preset.
The first one results in a 20% increase in the duration whilst the second one plays back in the original video's time.
The second one takes more than 10 times longer than the original video to convert, whilst the first one takes around 65% of the original video's time to convert.
Now here is the odd thing!
The 20% extended video made quickly with the first preset SOUNDS OK !
I was expecting the dialogue to sound dreadfully slow with a noticeable lowering of the voice pitch.
In fact, only when I compare it to the original very carefully, do I detect the slightest hint of it being slower.
Any person listening normally would be unaware it had been slowed down.
As for the pitch . . . . . . that is absolutely perfect . . . . . . exactly the same as the original.
Can anyone explain these peculiar results or am I simply hallucinating?
Incidentally, I can detect a slight slowing of the action, but as it doesn't have a serious effect for the type of video I shoot, I think I will stick with the quick conversion for most subjects.

  • The new MacBookPro C2D,  long but please READ!!

    Hi all,
I recently purchased the MBP C2D ( 2.33 GHZ which has 2GB RAM stock) and used the Target Disk Mode in my PB G4 to transfer everything over to the C2D. While the idea seems convenient and everything did transfer over, I do not recommend this method.
    1) Firstly, a few unnecessary apps and files got transferred over, things such as "PB Battery updater" and Virex anti-virus software, both of which are not compatible. Also, I looked in my APP folder, and saw THREE files from iwork: 1) Iwork 06 from old powerbook 2) Iwork 06 3) iwork (30 day trial) folder. It seems that in making the transfer, the computer was not smart enough to delete the Trial version of the iwork and not make a redundant iwork folder.
2)My Microsoft Office transferred over fully, not requiring the serial numbers to be inputed again, as did all passwords, network settings, keychain items, even my customized dashboard widgets.
However, I am just not sure if this is the way to go. Do programs that run natively on intel, all of a sudden, are going to run using Rosetta because the apps were installed on a PowerPC machine? You will also need to update most software to get "universal binary" versions on the C2D. But, how about the many Apple security software updates that I did on my PB G4 that were made for "PowerPC"? Is that going to transfer over to the intel machine and just waste space??
The C2D was running a bit sluggishly from the first moment I started using it, the fan working extra fast and loud. Even my keynote transitions were "stuttering" and not smooth at all. These issues were not blatantly obvious, but rather very subtle. As it turned out, within 1 day I got a Kernel Panic forcing a manual shutdown. (I was working on Imovie and decided to open my Keynote app and it wouldn't open). . Maybe I had a defective machine or maybe it was due to a number of compatibiliy issues with the transfer from G4 to C2D. Anyhow, I decided to exchange it with a new machine and give it another try.
This time, I decided to bypass the transfer data and just turned on the machine and started with a clean machine. I manually moved over my iphoto, itunes, safari, addresbook, and mail accounts and preferences. After every one of these transfers, I did a repair disk permission, and believe me it is necessary as permissions and privileges were altered EVERYTIME. I did a clean install of the iwork from the CD and now I do not have the redundant iwork folders.
    This machine is AWESOME!!!
The speed on the C2D is faster than my Power Mac G5 dual 2.5 with 1.5 GB RAM. I even did some intense imovieHD editting with the battery setting to maximum and did not hear the lould fan that I did with the old C2D. The battery consumption on this machine is simply AWESOME
The moral of the story is take the long road, if you want to transfer from a PB to a MBP. As tempting as it is to just connect the two machine to make the trasnfer, you will undoubtedly hit a glitch somewhere, sometime. Do a clean install and move things over manually. It takes a bit longer, but will save you alot of aggravation.
I did read alot of negative experiences from others and their macintels, and was a bit hesitant in making the switch....but now that I did, I am extremely glad I did. Just make sure you follow the points I stated above.
    Good luck

    1) Firstly, a few unnecessary apps and files got
transferred over, things such as "PB Battery updater"
and Virex anti-virus software, both of which are not
compatible. Also, I looked in my APP folder, and saw
    THREE files from iwork:
Yes,it's better to get rid of unnecessary stuff before the transfer, but you can also delete that junk after.
2)My Microsoft Office transferred over fully...
And so does the Adobe stuff, including the important things in /Library. The Migration Assistant is quite good.
Do programs that run natively on intel, all of a
sudden, are going to run using Rosetta because the
apps were installed on a PowerPC machine?
The Migration Assistant only transfers apps not already on the new machine. Thus, old versions of, say, iTunes, are not transferred. You retain the version that's preinstalled on the new machine (the Intel version.)
You will also need to update most software to get "universal
    binary" versions on the C2D
Yup. I've been doing that for a couple of months, so my transition next week will be very smooth.
many Apple security software updates that I did on
my PB G4 that were made for "PowerPC"? Is that going
to transfer over to the intel machine
Nope. Those updates affected the kernel, various apps (e.g. Safari), and software Frameworks. None of that stuff transfers.
The C2D was running a bit sluggishly from the first
moment I started using it, the fan working extra fast
Could've been some odd software problem, something sucking up lots of CPU time. If it persisted past a shutdown/restart, then it might be a hardware problem. More likely it was some Login Item having problems.
Anyhow, I decided to exchange it with a new machine...
Though this may not have been necessary, it is one way to skin the cat.
I decided to bypass the transfer...and started with a clean machine
That took more work on your part, but it works.
Did you copy (home)/Library in its entirety, or did you just bring bits and pieces of it?

  • IPhone 4: connecting to TV for the 1st time with new "Composite AV Cable" only plays sound, not video on TV. However, this new cable works fine with old iPod to play videos on TV. Suggestions?

I'm trying to connect my iPhone 4 to my TV to play videos via use of a new "Composite AV Cable" but only sound will play off TV, not video.  I've tried every yellow/red/white input on the TV but to no avail.  Any suggestions?

The iPhone 4, unlike iPod, doesn't ask you to set for PAL or NTSC.  In fact, in the SETTINGS/Video menu it only asks if you want to "Start Playing From Beginning", "Closed Captioning" and "Home Sharing".  I was surprised it had no settings like the iPod at all.

  • Project duration too long at only 68 minutes?

Hi, I can't figure this out.
I just upgraded from a PowerMac G5 to a MacPro. Just got it running last night so hopefully I'm overlooking a simple step because I'm new to iLife 09, although I've been using iLife and iDVD for quite some time.
I have an iDVD project that I've been using repeatedly for at least a year or more. It is a DVD porfolio. Duration is about 87 minutes and no problems on the G5/iLife 08.
Now with the upgraded computer and software, it keeps telling me that the project duration is too long for a single layer disc. I've taken the content down to 65 minutes! Quality is set to Best Performance.
Am I missing something else? This same exact project was fine on the old computer.
Thank you very much, time is of the essence for this one unfortunately.
    Eric

Beverly is correct, and for future reference, what Best Performance does is encode while you work to make the whole process faster, but as a result the DVD must be shorter because iDVD doesn't know how much to compress the DVD before it completed. High Quality and Professional Quality both wait until you're ready to burn to begin encoding. High Quality takes less time, but the quality is poorer the closer to 120 minutes the DVD is. Professional Quality takes longer, but it encodes in a higher quality for fuller DVDs. (Below the quality setting in Project Info, the colored bar shows you where the quality begins to degrade for each setting and where you are on that bar.)

  • Changing the Videocamera Framerate from NTSC (30fps) to PAL (25fps)

When I am using the IPhone4 videocamera (with ios4.2.1) ... the framerate is something between 23.999 til 30 frames. That is very horrible for european and australian users because there is the PAL standard of 25fps valid. If you transform movies with a framerat of 30 to 25 frames, the movie looks very ugly. The picture jumps because of lost pictures through the transformation.
A videocamera without a option button for NTSC (30fps) or PAL (25fps) is for people out of NTSC Country very useless. Why doesn't fix Apple this? Evere simple Videocamera in a Handy has this option. HD 720 helps in that case nothing.

glad I could help... you're welcome...
Apple is letting the side down with it's intuitive software on that front!
... hmm, I'm pretty sure, they spend hours in a sweaty conference room, discussing "but widescreen isn't NTSC, HiDef isn't NTSC - so it HAS to be called by its fps!" - "but NO ordinairy user knows the framerate of its homevideo!" - "yeah, but the new formats are not standard, so it's not NTSC!" - "yeah, but a US video is called NTSC, that is standard" - "but what about Japan?" - "..."
finally, the "enigneers" won.. technical correct, but for you and me.. cryptical.
thanks for The Big Green One

Is it possible to support Logic in 32-bit plug-ins in future updates? How about to make a bridge built in Logic. I would have long ago moved on to a new version of Logic, but I have the equipment (UAD-1 and Liquid Mix), which are not run on the Loqic X. So I would suggest to make a bridge in Logic X. As it was in version 9 of the Logic.

In addition.. Focusrite have stated they will not be releasing a 64bit version of Liquid Mix as they consider it outdated software these days.... even though at one point a limited release beta version had a 64bit AU version included but it was so unstable it was rapidly dropped...
However the 32bit to 64bit bridge plugin 32 Lives,  states it will handle and 'convert' the Stereo version of Liquid Mix to 64bit but not the Mono version... within LPX
    http://www.soundradix.com/products/32-lives/compatibility
Finally, like others here, I would be extremely surprised if Apple added 32bit AU support back into LPX..  That '32bit tech' is long dead and gone....in terms of modern DAWs... as it is in other DAWs such as the recent PT versions...

  • Convert Regions to New Sampler Track - new bug in 9.1?

I've tried creating new EXS instruments using the Audio>Convert Regions to New Sampler Track command and all I get is empty audio files, or files containing bursts of white noise.
Same thing happens in both 64 and 32-bit versions of 9.1.
The same regions create a working sampler instrument when the operation is tried in v9.02.
Can anybody confirm this apparent bug?

    Bee Jay wrote:
Ok, I set my audio format to CAF, bounced some audio to a CAF, then did the convert to sampler instrument on that CAF, and it still worked fine for me.
The created slices in the EXS editor were all CAF format too.
This is at 44KHz, 24-bit. What is your sample rate etc set to?
    The same - 44.1/24
Oh well, I'll report it anyway. Maybe it's hardware specific.
Thanks for your time, Bee Jay.

  • Convert Project vs New Project / Import

    Hi,
I currently have both PP CC 7.2.2 and 2014 8.0.0 installed on my Win 7 Pro machine, both of which have been running smooth and I personally haven't experienced and issues with 2014 8.0.0 - yet.
Over the last several versions of PP since about CS5 or so I think, I keep occasionally seeing messages where a user might have opened an existing project file that PP has "converted" to a new project file and might have performance issues. I often see responses where someone will say "Make a new project and import the old one"...or something to that effect.
Over the last few days I have let 2014 8.0.0 convert some of my existing 7.2.2 projects files. I would then do various test exports, work in the project, etc.
I then created some new 2014 8.0.0 projects and imported the 7.2.2 projects, and again, did the same test exports, etc.
I can't really find a difference or see a varying performance difference in either of the project files.
So my question is this....What is going on "under the hood" so to speak when the new(er) version of PP converts an existing project file (no matter the version number) to the newer version of PP versus creating a new project file (in the new version) and importing the old version?
I have hundreds of project files and I always like to convert them to the current version of the software so after several versions pass I don't get the "project is too old to convert" (which has happened to me in AE before).
So I am debating should I just let PP convert them or is there a benefit / performance difference to creating new project files and importing the old ones?

An event contains your media, your clips, video, audio, graphics. A project is your edited program. You can edit media from any event into any project.

  • New Pages no longer allows SECTIONS (in thumbnail view window) to be re-arranged like before?

New Pages no longer allows SECTIONS (in thumbnail view window) to be re-arranged like before? You could drag and drop sections within your document the same way you could drag and drop pages in Preview's PDF documents. So how do you re-arrnage your document now?
    ALSO
You used to be able to duplicate/copy a section/page by draging it with OPTION-LEFT-CLICK to a space below or above in the thumbnial window. The same way it works in PREVIEW in a PDF document. Did I miss something or is this also a bug?!
These were extremely helpful to me and I hope many others. Can anyone help!?
    Thanks :-)

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5.

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5 and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CANT DELETE MY APPLE ID I JUST GOT A NEW AND NO LONGER NEED THE OLD 1 HELP PLEASE

As far as I know they can't be deleted, just remove any personal info from it (credit card details etc) and stop using it.
If you downloaded any content via it then you will need to remember it and it's password, as content is tied to the account that bought/downloaded it, so if you move to a new computer you'll need to authorise the account on it if you want to use any of its content there (or if you bought apps with it you'll only be able to download updates to them via that account)

  • The "new" hotmail no longer works with safari, but works with firefox. Hmm.

The "new" hotmail no longer works with safari, but works with firefox. Hmm. i find this very convenient being a microsoft product. anybody else wonder why this new version happens to not be safari compatible? does anybody know if it works on the PC version of safari? if not, i find this to be a blatant move on microsofts part to bias the safari browser (especially since its basicly new on the window platform). forcing safari/hotmail users to "have" to use another browser to access their hotmail accounts.

I have been successfully using Hotmail and Gmail with Safari for a long time. For roughly the past month, that relationship is rocky at best. At times, one of the following actions suddenly opens Hotmail, but it is a short-lived solution:
    (a) Hotmail directly
    (b) Hotmail Home>Hotmail
    (c) Sign up to Windows Hotmail
    (d) Deletion of prescribed cookies, resetting, etc. - made no difference
Both Firefox and Opera work fine with Hotmail - especially Opera is very fast.
In addition, Safari and Gmail does not work with Attachments, but otherwise Gmail is OK.
I suspect I have to wait for a Safari fix because in my case I do not wish to abandon Hotmail, and Safari is a given. I would think that Safari would want to stay competitive with the two biggies, Hotmail and Gmail, which must have large numbers of users.
I certainly would appreciate any other suggested fixes.
